After weks and weeks of our eyes meeting across a busy folk club, and having already crossed each other at the entrance (when she said "hello"), I was still too shy. Eventually her gang of friends happened to include someone I knew and I used the pretext to approach and finally (after nearly driving her mad with frustration at my dithering) asked her out.

Or, to put it more poetically:

If you only could have seen her through my eyes
As she entered through the door
The room turned to paradise
For perfection always comes as a surprise
If you only could have seen her through my eyes.

If you only could have seen what I could see
You'd have climbed every mountain,
You'd have sailed every sea
You would know that there could be no compromise
If you only could have seen her through my eyes.

And as the time now passes
It gets stronger every year
And through thick and dusty glasses
I still see it bright and clear
How she touched my heart with just a single smile
And all my life till then became worthwhile.

If you only could have heard her with my ears
You'd have sworn that they were playing
The music of the spheres
Like Ulysses' sirens heard across the years
If you only could have heard her with my ears.

If you only could have heard her velvet voice
You'd have heard the angels singing
Every other just a noise
Like a mother's lullaby dissolving fears
If you only could have heard her with my ears.

And as the time now passes
It gets stronger every year
And through thick and dusty glasses
I still see it bright and clear
How she changed my life with just a sweet Hello
And there's nowhere, if she asked, I wouldn't go.

If you only could have felt her with my heart
You would know your life has ended
And new life about to start
And that nothing ever could keep you apart
If you only could have felt her with my heart.

And as the time now passes
It gets stronger every year
And through thick and dusty glasses
I still see it bright and clear
How her presence on that day cut like a knife
And for one more day with her I'd give my life.

*WARNING* - the following true story may offend some people's spiritual, semi-spiritual or even non-spiritual sensibilities. If you're the type that feels threatened in any way by other people's experiences when they differ from your own - just SKIP THIS POST please! Because I'm not going to argue with anyone and I have nothing to 'prove'. I'm telling this story only cuz

1. You asked!

2. It's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Ready? Here we go then ....

I saw my (ex) husband in a vivid dream several months before we met physically. In the dream, I was at the kitchen window watching my dad out in the front yard. He was shaking hands with a nice-looking young blond man, a stranger. Like they were making some sort of 'deal'.   And as they shook hands, suddenly the whole yard was full of beautiful, vibrant red and gold flowers, swaying in the breeze. IT just took my breath away!   Tulips, they were .... and there were no tulips in the gardens at the time.   In fact, I'd never planted a tulip in my life ...

Well, when I actually met him later that year, something felt SO familiar. Like deja vu. But it wasn't till a couple months later, as he was telling me stories about his Dutch family and background that I remembered that vivid dream about my dad, the young man, "the deal" and the tulips.

Hmmmm .... it's a couple decades and a divorce later now. And I've since found out (from the usual unreliable sources) that we'd known each other in a couple past incarnations. We'd only been acquaintances before, though.

In hindsight, we'd probably been MUCH better off leaving it at that!   ;-)

short and sweet here!...peg and i met through a pen pal column in the early issues of Country Song Roundup magazine, which also printed the words to the latest country songs, and stories of the artist, radio dj's etc... anyway,we wrote to one another for about 3 months(february 1959 til june 1959) and we also were corresponding to other pen pals at the same time...somehow or another,we kept our letters going about every week! i was working at a local factory in winston-salem,n.c., at the time, so when my vaction time came around i hopped a greyhound bus to richmond ,missouri(i didn't even have a car yet)and i spent two weeks with her and her family on the farm there!
at the end of the first week,we got married at her mom and dad's farm homeplace(july 23rd,1959,with their blessings too,of course!)anyway,at the end of the second week i rode the greyhound bus back to winston-salem! the very next weekend,i returned to missouri, with the help of my brother-in law,who volunteered to take me there to pick up my new bride and bring her back home with me to north carolina!
i refer to peg,as my mail order bride, and that was 46 years ago this month july 23rd!( and now you know....the rest of the story!!!)

It may sound like a sleazy sixties comedy but I actually married my French teacher from school - technically she was my sixth form tutor but she taught modern languages.

Perfectly true

Wow, man. I had a French teacher that I seriously would of liked to get totgether with after school fer some exrtracorricular activiites..know what I mean? Miss Robitaille. Holy flip. I never forgot her, eh? She was a fox and a half. You can take that to the flippin' bank, man.

Anyways, I met my wife-to-be (Officer Dana of the O.P.P.) not too long after me and my brother Don got flippin' arrested for bustin' into the Beer Store in Sudbury. Akshally, it was 3 Beer Stores, a hardware store, and a tattoo parlor, and a stolen school bus, eh?

But it was all in a good cawse. Me and Don are public bennyfacters. I figger that is why we got outta jail early.

But bakc to the wife-to-be, Officer Dana. She just gets better lookin' every day. She is an athlete, man. Fits the uniform like a flippin' glove. Or the other way around, I mean. She don't know we are gonna be married yet, but we will be. I am puttin' my life in order here, writin' articlkes for the paper and tryin' not to get drunk befoer nooon. Usually.

I have fans. That is kind ofa problem becoz some of them are girls, and I get tempted. Severely tempted. Officer Dana don't seem to mind that too much so I guess she is real secure in her own self and don't worry or get jealous. I sure hope so.

I figger we will have the biggest flippin' wedding in the history of Blind River. And it will be atteneed by 2 gropus of people:

1. Cops. Lots of them.

2. the people the cops are usually after...my friends!

It's gonna be a flippin' HOOT, man! I can see it in my mind's eyes. Me in a flippin' tuxedo and her in a white dress...with black lace underwear. Oh yeah! My whole life is reaqching a transbendental crashendo here and it's all because I knocked over a flippin' Beer Store.

Destiny is weird, eh? God must love me.

I met Marge (wife number two) at an outdoors open mike. As I came off the stage and headed for my seat, she stopped me, said she liked a particular song, and asked if I had a CD. I told her no, but I would tape the song for her if she sent me a cassette. I gave her my card and we talked awhile. She asked me, "Do you know 'I Want to be Seduced?" I said I was familiar with the song by Leon Redbone, but I had never tried to play it.

We parted and on the way home, I kicked myself (difficult to do while driving) for not getting her name, phone number or address. However, two days later, a blank cassette arrived in the mail with a return address. I called her up and asked to meet her at a local festival. She agreed. Two days later she called to say she had a part-time job that was calling her into work and she couldn't meet me. We chatted. I told her I was going to see some friends give a performance at a park that night. She asked, "Is that an invitation?" I told her it could be and we went off to the park.

We went out together many times, but she was not very warm. She resisted all of my attempts to get romantic. We were just being good friends. Finally, one evening she said that she enjoyed her time with me, but there was no 'spark'. I called my best friend that night and told him I had enough friends who were females, I was looking for a lover. We had another date scheduled. When I met her that evening, we went to another outdoor concert (it was summertime). As we sat and listened, her hand slowly reached over and firmly attached itself to mine. Some where some how, the lady changed her mind. There have been lots of sparks since then; we have been together 12 years and married for the last 5. I'm looking forward to the next 12 years.

Which one!

Partner 1 - I met in bed - my bed - why was she there - I don't know - I was very drunk and went to sleep this took up about 5 years of my life!!!!

Wife 1 - At Uni, friend of a friend - I did a knight in shining armour thing that lasted another 8 - 10 years

Wife 2 - A Friends Party - Pure lust and love 2 Kids and 10 -11 years - the time scale keeps increasing so far!

Partner 2 - Festival 10 years B4 we got toghether - Pure love and Admiration - 6 or 7 years

All are sad losses in many different ways but an average of 7.5 - 8 years each lets see how it works with my life span I shouls have at leeast two or 3 more efforts - one long one would be nice though!!!

Those that know me know the truth in all this but, despite some of the ire and angst, I've enjoyed all of it and have much respect for all those who cna make it work on a longer term basis!

Along comes this girl and sits down beside me and says "You're a Mother #^%$ing liar!"

I turned and looked into her eyes and that was that.

I like that story, Bert. It has the ring of authenticity.

In my case, I met my wife-to-be while filming an art nouveau/western in Durango, Mexico last year. I had been hired to play the part of a career bandido who has experienced a spiritual epiphany and has decided to spend the rest of his life emulating Johhny Depp characters. I was attempting to mount a rather uncooperative little mustang for the bank robbery scene, which involved about 75 Mexican extras, including a woman with the most striking dark eyes and a blood-red bandana. Her name was Elena, but most people on the set called her "rojo" for some reason. (It means "red".) She was not a redhead, but she did wear the red bandana much of the time, and seemed to be the fiery sort.

With a struggle and a flourish of my poncho I finally managed to mount the horse, but my troubles were not over, because the little bastard decided to bolt at that moment, leaping over a fence and scattering the loungers and street kids who were watching. Several people cheered enthusiastically as I frantically attempted to stay in the saddle. The mariachis played furiously on their guitars, humming like a hive of angry bees! In the next few seconds I and the horse covered a surprising amount of ground, managing to upset 3 cameras, a taco seller's wagon, and about 50 paintings of Elvis and the Virgin of Guadeloupe that someone was selling to tourists. Then I became airborne.

Time seemed to stand still. I considered the possibility that I might in fact NEVER get to date Winona Ryder and that George Bush might possibly change the Constitution and get appointed President-for-life...I counted 758 spines on a large cactus that was passing by on my left...I remembered that in 1966 I had hidden a gold locket behind some books on a shelf in the house that my parents sold in 1969...which house has since been turned into a shrine, due to the fact that an image of the Virgin Mary appeared on a pancake there.

Then everything went black. Presently I heard what seemed to be some sort of heavenly music. I slowly opened my eyes and looked up into Elena's face. She gazed at me with a steady and solemn look and spoke, in dulcet tones. Her voice was deep and very calm.

"You came to Mexico for a reason," she said. "You came for me."

We plan to marry in September. I am going to place roses on the grave of Emiliano Zapata. A man must never be afraid to face his true destiny.

Well, nobody who knows me will be particularly surprised that I met Sheryl at a science-fiction convention. It was just over 10 years ago at a con called Disclave which was held in DC over Memorial Day weekend. A mutual friend had invited her to come up and crash on the floor of the hotel room he and I happened to be sharing (with several other folks...).

A few months after the con we struck up an e-mail correspondence, and Sheryl kept coming up from NC (she was working at Duke at the time) and staying in the room with the group of friends I usually split rooms with.

Finally she moved up to this area in 1997 for better job and social opportunities. We ended up doing a lot of stuff together--concerts, con trips, movies, etc. Then near the end of 1999, after we'd both been in relationships with other folks, she finally asked **me** if we could be more than friends, and I admitted I'd been interested in that too (but too afraid to ask).

2-1/2 years later, I invited her to move in with me.

A little more than a year after that, I popped the question at the top of the world's largest free-standing structure (that'd be the CN Tower for the non-architects and engineers out there...*grin*).

And 51 weeks ago Sunday, we got married! 8-)

I met my husband for the first time at a mutual friend's wedding. He stood in, at the last minute, for the the best man and I was the bridesmaid.

A few weeks later, I was sitting on the floor in the hallway, outside my apartment, with a paint brush in my hand, taking a break from my labours. He came by to visit a friend in the adjoining apartment and out of the blue, bent over and kissed me on the forehead. That did it for me.

I met Leetle Hawk while filming "Los Bandidos Mariachissimos" in Durango, Mexico last year. I was chosen to play the part of a mysterious woman who joins a gang of bandido mariachi players who ally themeselves weeth the revolutionary armies of Emiliano Zapata (my hero). While on the set, I noticed a Canadiense actor weeth a very striking appearance. He was thin like a rail, weeth long bushy hair, and he could do amazing Bob Dylan imitations weeth the guitarra and harmonica. He also bore a strange resemblance to Johhny Depp een some way, but I cannot say how. It had something to do with his part in the film, which was of a famous bandido who has experienced a spiritual illumination. It was very artistic and romantic. I was immediately drawn to him, but I had no intention to show it. I played it "cool", as you say. I watched heem from the shadows, biding my time.

A scene came which required him to ride a horse. This particular horse is not a nice horse. I know him. He is an hijo de puta who likes throwing his riders into the cactus plants.

Well, the horse did what he does when he knows he is dealing with someone who doesn't know him very well yet. He went loco and took off with Leetle Hawk hanging on for dear life. My pulse quickened to see how his poncho flared out in the wind and how manfully he hung on to the crazy bastard horse. The mariachis all played like mad as the horse hurtled about the set, destroying many things and raising hell, as you say. Many valueless paintings of Elvis Presley were destroyed. Also some of the Virgin of Guadeloupe. For that, I intend to see that the horse is himself destroyed. I and my compadres will eat the son of a whore for insulting the Holy Virgin of Mexico. His time has come at last. I swear it.

Leetle Hawk hung on most bravely, but finally he was thrown most terribly from the stupid caballo. He did not land in a cactus...gracias a Dios! (thanks God!)

But he did land on his cabeza. His head, that is. I feared for the worst. "Stand aside," I said to the foolish extras who were milling around, probably hoping to make off with his wallet. I parted them as Moses parts the Red Sea, and knelt over him. He was still breathing. I started to sing softly, a song of liberation for the oppressed from the hell of poverty and tyrrany.

He opened his eyes and looked into mine. I felt a timeless wave roll over me. I felt the hands of destiny upon my heart.

"You came to Mexico for a reason," I said. "You came for me."

He has never doubted it since. We will marry in September and place roses on the grave of Emiliano Zapata. A woman must never shrink from her true destiny. Together we will destroy the corporate international bastards who oppress the pobres of the land. Or we will die trying. Zapata would do no less.

Some call me "Rojo", but I am Elena.

My future wife actually saw me before I saw her, as I was doing sound at the Doncaster Folk Festival in 1970.

Shortly afterwards Geoff (now of Braken Rigg) went on a trip to France, and came back besotted with a girl, Val, that he had met on the trip. They sat in the pub billing and cooing over each other (do people still do that?) and I sat bored to tears, as its not much of a spectator sport. As they left, I said to Val "Haven't you got any friends you could bring along for me to talk to?".

Meanwhile....

The following day Val is out shopping, and meets Sue, who she used to go to school with, but is now at Art College. "Come down to the pub tonight and meet this fella I met on my trip".

So the next night I go down the pub, and there's Geoff and Val and this other girl, Sue. "Gosh", I think "she took me at my word and brought a friend". We got talking, found we had a lot in common, particularly a sense of humour and a love of folk music, and ten days later I was taking her to the Jug O'Punch in Birmingham, where she did a floor spot.

Three years later we were married, and 35 years later she was dead. It was our 31st wedding anniversary yesterday.

Here's a picture of Sue
