Except for age, nothing much has changed since the first year . I did have a brain wave last year though, and added that I didn't mind previously owned items. So my great SS, Hollowfox, sent me a lot of duplicate books of hers - hymn books, storytelling books, etc. plus some other lovely odds and ends. That worked out really well, so that's the only addition that comes to mind at this point.

1. what is your age range?

18-90

2. gender? Genuine male

3. Do you have a favorite color? Partial to sea-bles and forest greens, and cedar and earth.

4. favorite authors/ type of book? Love good scifi in the tradition of Heinlein, Asimov, Clarke, David Brin; love rollicking sea tales, very well-written novels, think-a-lot books like Jared Diamond's stuff. Do not like shallow romances, quisling politics, glib and specious spirituality.

5. what books have you really been wanting?

Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed by Jared Diamond
The Third Chimpanzee : The Evolution and Future of the Human Animal by Jared Diamond
Freakonomics : A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. Levitt
The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century by Thomas L. Friedman

6. what type of music do you like? Traditional, older folk music (as mentioned in the book question).

Any well done and heart-felt music of its time, traditional, old-time, baroque, Elizabethan, Seeger, Almanac Singers, Frank Warner, Rick Fielding, Bruce Murdoch, all the guys on the Mudcat CDs (but I have them), interesting world music, old croooners sometimes, DIxieland almost anytime, ragtime, rock, delta blues, urban blues, good love songs, but not facile or specious. Real human stuff, I guess you'd call it.

7. what cds have you really been wanting?

Surprise me.

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting?

None

9. what is your t-shirt size?

Large, I suppose.

10. do you collect anything? if so, what?

Well, inadvertently, hand tools of different sorts.

11. what are some of your other hobbies?

Occasional furniture construction, home DIY stuff, MAc software, writing, songwriting; I am getting abanjo for Xmas I believe, so that will definitely become one. Diving and sailing. Emerging technologies. Complaining about Bush.

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?

Don't do "tone" jewelry; I like real gold.

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like.

I guess I prefer gifts, however small, that have some kind of anchor to what I think of as real roots--stone, earth, sky, water; human heart, art, music and intelligence. This rules out K-Mart. I don't mind plastic parts on gadgets, but I don't like plastic sentiments.

1. what is your age range? 53 to 53

2. gender? It appears that I am male

3. Do you have a favorite color? Green and maroon

4. favorite authors/ type of book? Good sci-fi for escape and philosophy for mental nourishment

5. what books have you really been wanting? As above or something interesting on herbal medicine

6. what type of music do you like? Traditional, older folk music (as mentioned in the book question). Traditional Irish, Scottish, Breton, Galician, French-Canadian, Appalacian, blues, bluesy jazz, good acoustic contemporary, anything else that is good and interesting

7. what cds have you really been wanting? Happy to try anything new!

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting? Again, happy to try anything intersting (easy aren't I!)

9. what is your t-shirt size? XXL usually fits (great big chest)!

10. do you collect anything? if so, what? All types of musical and scientific paraphernalia

11. what are some of your other hobbies? Working with wood and leather

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry? A gold and silver umbilibling would be nice! (Only joking, don't wear jewellery as a rule)

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like. I'm not very materialistic (apart from my instruments) so anything that reflects my secret santa's interests, hobbies or local culture would be very welcome. Something to meditate to (visual or sound) could also be nice

Peace (and thanks in advance to whoever will be my SS!)

Well, last year's questions and my answers were something like this:

1. what is your age range? 0 to 55

2. gender? Either I'm male, or my trousers don't fit.

3. Do you have a favorite color? Not really. I seem to wear a lot of blue, though

4. favorite authors/ type of book? Historical, especially maritime - something that might give me ideas for writing songs

5. what books have you really been wanting? None that I know of - surprise me

6. what type of music do you like? British-style trad folk or good modern songs in the traditional style.

7. what cds have you really been wanting? We have a room full of CDs awaiting sorting, but anything REALLY obscure that fits the above has a chance of being something we haven't already got.

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting? Don't watch videos

9. what is your t-shirt size? Chuffin' enormous

10. do you collect anything? if so, what? Not really

11. what are some of your other hobbies? I write songs for a hobby, as they don't die as quickly as tropical fish

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry? Don't do jewelry.

This year, things haven't changed much. Add one to the upper end of the age range. Bookwise, I've started to write songs about other things than the sea, so anything containing real people's accounts of their lives would be potentially nourishing for my muse. If your part of the world has any historical connection with my part (South Wales) I would love to read about it. Just as good as the presents last year was the repartee and guessing games on the SS threads - whoever my santa is this year, please play the game again!

Andrew

I am 38. I am a girl. I like girl-type things. I have plenty of books and CDs. I do like chocolates and other sweeties. I sing, play the violin, knit, and bellydance (not all at the same time!) I have been thrilled with every Secret Santa surprise I have received over the years.

This year, if it strikes you, Santa, you can also make a donation in my name to hurricane relief efforts in the US, or historic preservation anywhere in the world.

1. what is your age range?

I was born in 1945. Some folks didn't think I last beyond 1946 -- something about my behavior, not my health.

2. gender?

I am genetically XY and likely to stay that way.

3. Do you have a favorite color?

Yes. "RCMP Scarlet", black, Hunter green, a nice blue-gray....

4. favorite authors/ type of book?

History, folklore, science fiction, songbooks (with dots), science (especially speculative science), outdoors, fencing (with swords, not wire), and a plethora of other subjects. Romance novels and western novels are about the only thing I don't read, and I'll read them if there's nothing else around.

5. what books have you really been wanting?

The original Book of Kells, and there was this bible that was printed in Mainz in 1456....

6. what type of music do you like?

Folk. Blues.

7. what cds have you really been wanting?

The Gibson & Camp at the Gate of Horn Reunion album. Stan Roger's "Home in Halifax." "Classic Schooner Fare" or their Christams album.

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting?

Well, I don't really do movies, but I haven't seen the last Harry Potter flick or the LOTR trilogy.

9. what is your t-shirt size?

XXL

10. do you collect anything? if so, what?

Debts, but it's inadvertent. Bruises. Experience.

11. what are some of your other hobbies?

Well...fencing epee. Riflery, especially with pre-1840 rifles. Fooling around in the woods and mountains. I try to play trumpet. Annoying other people. Telling whoppers.

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?

Well...either, if it's the pure metal. Platinum works too.

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like.

I'm a librarian, I can cook pretty well (not a hobby, but survival), I'm into historical reenacting.... Hell, just ask me and I'll tell ya.

OK - apparently we're of the corporate opinion that it's better to post the information here, rather than link to it so here goes ...

1. what is your age range? 48, for another week

2. gender? Just one of the girls

3. Do you have a favorite color? Denim

4. favorite authors/ type of book? ummm, I kinda go with the flow; see below

5. what books have you really been wanting? I can always use cook books; I had Joe Kline's biog. of Woody Guthrie last year, and wouldn't mind biogs on Pete Seeger, the Carter Family, et al. or a lot of the books in the Mudcat library list - bought Sound of The Dove from that list (with tape) and was in my element!

6. what type of music do you like? very traditional, particularly archive recordings - also bought the Shaker Hymns CD because of Mudcat; also Gospel, cajun, Canadian trad ...

7. what cds have you really been wanting? Anything from Folk Legacy, anything *very* regional and traditional (recently bought a Folksongs of Ulster CD - largely as I really only knew songs from the Republican tradition)

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wnting? None, really. Don't tend to buy

9. what is your t-shirt size? Don't wear 'em

10. do you collect anything? if so, what? Cook books, old hymn books, oh - and thumb picks; I get one whenever I visit a new town.

11. what are some of your other hobbies? quilting, crochet, cooking, gardening - the usual stuff, I guess; oh - and godchildren ... but I really don't need any more of those!

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry? silver

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like - wouldn't mind someone's personal favourite recipes; I like short stories (folk tales); I'm a dog and horse type, not (sorry, folks) cats; quite like riddles.

And, as above, if you have any duplicates in your library, or stuff ready to be 'passed on', I would find them 'most acceptable'.

I gotta say that the book on Amos' list, Freakonomics, intrigues me! Amos, if you get it, and get my name in 2006, see above.

There will also be another thread or possibly threads with silly little backs and forths - Secret Santa's will log out and come in as guest's (usually calling themselves so-and -so's Secret Santa - or some variation) to elicit more info and/or tease their santee. Santee's beg and plead trying to figure out who their Santa is, etc. Not obligatory but can be fun.

Can I suggest through the medium of this thread that Mudcatter's put their profile on record, or update their existing one. It makes it easier and more interesting for a Santa if he/she can get data on their Santee.

1. what is your age range? 50-52

2. gender? F

3. Do you have a favorite color? Yes. I wear way too much black and dark green. I'm branching out to the jewel tones, everything except bright orange.

4. favorite authors/ type of book? Too many to name. I'm revisiting classics--Sinclair Lewis, John Steinbeck, but I already own the ones I want to read.

5. what books have you really been wanting? I like regional folk music studies to add to my collection inherited from Dad. Anyone have an extra set of Child you can ship, I'll happily take it off your hands!

6. what type of music do you like? Traditional, older folk music (as mentioned in the book question). A wide range, with a focus on classical and folk.

7. what cds have you really been wanting? Reissues of McCurdy, but for this Mudcat event, what I really PREFER is copies of YOUR music or what influences you.

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting? None in particular

9. what is your t-shirt size? Medium, or large if it is 100% cotton

10. do you collect anything? if so, what? Too many things!

11. what are some of your other hobbies? Gardening, sewing, cooking, primitive woodworking, refinishing, and upholstery projects.

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry? I don't do the "tone" stuff--too many reactions to base metal. I'm okay with sterling silver.

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like. As packrats, there is little that this household really needs. I have lots of art, but we can always use more. If you are an artist and have something of yours that you can ship safely that we can frame and put up (or set out on display) or if you perform or are (like me) one of those folks associated with another performer, I'd really like to have a sample of that music.

48 3/4 - 49

2. gender?
Definitely boy

3. Do you have a favorite color?

5. what books have you really been wanting?

Most things but specifically like acoustic folk, kept nice and simple -no annoying overproductions, one voice, one guitar type of thing.

9. what is your t-shirt size? medium to large (large for safety). Darks only.

Anything to do with Rugby (Union), (Teams: London Irish, Ireland, Felixstowe FRUFC), Camping/caravaning (festivals only) and I'm a sucker for gadgets and Gizmos. Most expensive hobby (by a long way) is raising two children but don't need any more thanks Santa.

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?
Not a jewelry type person.

13. Please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like. Remember that "negative hints" such as allergies might also be helpful.

Just a little reminder - If you wish to be included in this years (2005) Secret Santa run, you need to PM *ME* (Liz the Squeak) with your postal details. I promise they will only be passed on to your Secret Santa.

I mention this because there are people posting hints here who have not sent me their details.... someone could be getting all excited and not actually be in the game.

You have until Sept 25th to pass me your details... On 1st Oct you should recieve your Santee's details. If you are not in my PMs by then, you won't be included. I will NOT be trawling round threads to pick up stragglers again.

I'm 55 and male

I collect regional cookbooks, especially the type made for fundraising by fire departments, schools, churches, etc.

Ocarinas and clay whistles in unusual shapes.

Local history books, but not New Jersey, as I live here and probaby have everything available in print.

Traditional music CD's from any country, especially those put out by Mudcatters.

Any mudcatter crafts, but not t-shirts or jewelry.

Antique post-cards, esplecially the old large letter "Greetings From" kind, or pictures of small town main streets. Or postcards of musicians.

This is pretty much my hint list for last year and it still applies, except for some updating

Before I start, the most important part for me of the total Secret Santa experience is getting to know a bit about my Secret Santa so my favourite things are the ones which come from their local area, or which are chosen from their personal preferences, e.g. the music or books they love.

1. what is your age range? The Big 5-Oh!

2. gender? F

3. Do you have a favorite color? This is the easiest question on the list: Purple & all shades of it, including magenta, violet, indigo etc and especially combinations of these

4. favorite authors/ type of book? Difficult to say - I love Margaret Atwood's and Nevil Shute's books but have most of them. I have a whole Dewey Decimal system worth of books in my collection so I guess my book preferences are as wide a range as my music preferences - therefore you would have a wide choice on books (not very helpful I know) Your own interests or local area would be wonderful.

5. what books have you really been wanting? Secondhand is good. Most of my collection is secondhand - but none that I can think of

6. what type of music do you like? Everything! I used to say "everything but Country & Western and Opera" but that limitation doesn't even apply any more so I really want to find out what my Secret Santa likes.

I've just had the pianola repaired so anything relating to pianolas or piano rolls would be fun.

7. what cds have you really been wanting?

Nothing specific.

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting?

Secondhand is good. DVD's are difficult anyway because it has to be playable in Oz, although we may be able to work around it. Pal is the Oz VHS format but I can play NTSC videos.

I love old movies, often the ones with music in them, e.g. the Marx Bros, Eddie Cantor, etc

9. what is your t-shirt size? Medium - large

10. do you collect anything? if so, what? Kaleidoscopes

11. what are some of your other hobbies?

Other hobbies: pastel drawing - haven't done any for a long time, and playing Celtic harp, trying to learn piano, and wanting to learn more music theory, especially harmonies, accompaniment, chords, chord progressions etc

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry? probably silver, with a Celtic flavour

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like

Anything which shows my Secret Santa's preferences, interests and/or local area would be perfect.

Helen

1)AGE: 56

2)MALE

3)Blue,green or yellow (I had red hair before it faded)

4)History of all eras, Books on or collections of music, or share your favorite mystery writer or regional history/music. Nautical music collections or histories are nice.

5)Secondhand is fine with books or music. Vast library of either.

6)Music tastes vary widely-folk & traditional, jazz, classical(Boroque or Rennaisance),blues, bluegrass, celtic, old timey.

7)Good traditional music from your area, or your favorite local bar band of any kind, or some of your own stuff (if you have any of your own recorded). Something that gives me a taste where you come from.

8)Silent Comedy-Keaton & Chaplain (except "The Kid"), are pretty well covered, but anything else would be fine. LLoyd, L&H etc.

Also anything Hitchcock directed.

9)T-shirt large, but I tend to like my shirts from someplace I've actually been.

10)I collect recordings, (LPs included). And old metal advertising signs & thermometers. (And dust, but don't send any.)

11) Have given up Civil War re-enacting. Not really replaced with anything.

12)Don't bother much with jewelry.

13)Again, a taste of what's special that's local to you or something reflecting a personal favorite taste of some sort.

10. do you collect anything? if so, what?
       No.

       I don't wear jewelry.
13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like.

It has been mentioned before on other threads, but when you get ready to pack up your gift to mail, think about wrapping it with some pages from your local newspaper. It really is very interesting reading, whether ads or articles (or as Micca sent to Moonglow last year, the racing forms!)

Send what feels appropriate, and if something comes up and you can't send much, keep in mind that your local things might be quite exotic to someone across the ocean.

On Limpit's behalf:~

She's 9 3/4yrs going on 16, loves pink and purple but has Goth tendencies towards black. She reads almost anything with fairies in it but has most of the Rainbow Fairy series. She's into all sorts of music but can be picky. She's age 11-12 clothes wise, likes floaty dresses and flowery patterns. She's got a penchant for rude messages on Tshirts..... (can't think where she gets that from)! She has a small collection of fairies and mermaids.

She's a Cub scout, only girl in her troop; she likes riding her bike, playing with Lego, eating chocolate and reading.

She has pierced ears but isn't allowed dangly earrings at school so studs or small hoop sleepers in surgical steel or silver (we've noticed a bit of a reaction to gold recently but that may have been a cheap pair...).

LTS - for Limpit.

                      (Innocence) - fantastic graphics!

T-shirt size       - UK 12 or medium for comfort!

what do I collect? - don't go there.......have to use a shoe horn to
                      get in the attic

Hobbies             - Reading, learning languages, reading, cooking
and dining, reading, folk dancing, etymology
                      and reading!

jewelry             - wear very little but prefer silver-tone or

Anything else?      - nothing "smelly"
addicted to liquorice, wine and malt whisky but

Okay - this will be a repeat of last year mostly because :-
1. I don't fill in lists when I don't HAVE to *g*
2. Christmas is still all about surprises as far as I'm concerned
3. Anything from a Santa's home area or home created would be
just wonderful like last year (thanks again ! bee-dubya-ell xx)

I'm a medium sized female almost old enough to remember skiffle - at least the second time round! I like social history, geography, all sorts of music, walking downlands, cycling, reading, and I collect owls and song lyrics, and smiles LOL
Most of all though - I like surprises (leaving myself wide open to the empty box syndrome - "that'll surprise her all right" .... *g*)

rum

1. what is your age range? 17-ish

2. gender? female

3. Do you have a favorite color?
I like most of them, but not all at once. Greenish-blues and bright red are especially nice, however.

4. favorite authors/ type of book?
Comedy (think George Carlin), Fantasy (think Terry Pratchett), Shakespeare, and most manga (Japanese comics), books on costuming/history.

5. what books have you really been wanting?
I really have been meaning to read more Terry Pratchett (I've already read Light Fantastic, Mort, Monstrous Regiment, Colour of Magic, and Sourcery)

6. what type of music do you like?
All kinds, really... everything from Tom Lehrer to Metallica. The only two kinds I really can't stand are country and jazz.

7. what cds have you really been wanting?
Any of my Santa's absolute favourite music (that isn't in the genres I can't stand), or anything that they think I absolutely have to listen to before I get any older would be nice.

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting?
Can't really think of any...

9. what is your t-shirt size?
medium to large

10. do you collect anything? if so, what?
A lot of things... homework, dust, dirty laundry... but SRS is right, we don't need anything more in this house.

11. what are some of your other hobbies?
playing DDR (Dance Dance Revolution), costuming (Cosplay, specifically), trying to learn to play my dulcimer.

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?
I can't wear metal jewelry, it makes me break out.

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like.
I like shiny things, pearls, ridiculously large zippers, and lace trim. I don't like pastels (the art medium or the colours). Something related to where my santa lives or something that they have made, cliche as it may be, are greatly appreciated.

Okay, I apologize if my previous post seemed flippant and less than informative. I want precisely one thing: A stuffed animal who looks exactly like our Mother of All BS Threads mascot, Gluon the duckdog. Gluon is half Mallard and half Airedale and goes "Quark!" He is also capable of doing some very strange things to the space-time continuum, but I wouldn't expect a stuffed-animal Gluon to be able to do that. Please make sure that it is a stuffed representation of Gluon, not of her/his co-mascot Boson. Boson is an aardwolf and I don't have anyplace to keep an aardwolf.

Gardening - particularly herbs and vegetables, camping, photography, pottering around markets, writing silly poems and limericks, trying new and interesting recipes, running my folk club, having a few friends round for a BBQ and session, and I enjoy a good red wine and interesting cheeses too. My favourite drink of all time is an aperitif from France called "Pineau de Charentes". I'm also partial to a guinness or a good single-malt whisky. I like watching and photographing sunsets.

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry? Usually silver or pink gold or copper, and I prefer fine and delicate to large and chunky, although something medieval or dramatic or Pagan themed would be interesting. I like red, purple and green stones and moonstones too. I have pierced ears.

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like I like witchy and Pagan things. I like things that appeal to my senses. I especially like handmade stuff and old stuff - things that are unique. Anything that reflects you, your personality, your music, your interests, your lifestyle or where you live would be greatly valued.

14. Remember that "negative hints" such as allergies might also be helpful. Nothing that anyone here is likely to send me!

Jenny

Thank you, Art! I'd meant to track that one down and provide a link.

There are several folks each year who torture their Secret Santas by providing scant information. While the pleading for information can be entertaining at first, it becomes a sad thing after a while. Pathetic. Maudlin. The hand-wringing, the angst, the loss of joy in life. . . please, Santees, do your Santas a favor and say Something!

Subject: RE: BS: 2005--Secret Santa Hints
From: Bat Goddess
Date: 03 Oct 05 - 06:07 PM

I've finally had time to post this! (Sometimes it's nearly impossible to get things done on a moving planet.)

One overall suggestion is that I really like getting things from my Secret Santa's abode -- your music or that of your friends, local travel brochures, maps, rocks or shells, food -- even crumpled local newspapers used as packing material. (I have in my possession Divine's obituary in Spanish that was in a crumpled newspaper protecting something I had mailordered. )

1. what is your age range?
Let's see, I've been just about every age up to and including 56, but I'm doing research on ages I haven't yet attained.

2. gender?
Goddess, fer-pete's-sake

3. Do you have a favorite color?
Blue, green, blue green, purple, bluish purple, magenta. I avoid orange except in things I eat.

4. favorite authors/ type of book?
Adventurer Richard Halliburton (but I think I have all of the BOOKS he published -- interested in his periodical work, though), vintage (pre-1940) travel or exploration books, books on early gravestones or gravestone carvers (from your neck of the woods?), books about words and language, printing and typography, books about books.

5. what books have you really been wanting?
Alas, probably out of your price range, as well as mine.

6. what type of music do you like?
Everything from Louis Killen to Louis Prima, shanties and occupational songs to Manhattan Transfer and caberet.

7. what cds have you really been wanting?
Mudcatters' -- Jed Marum's, Big Mick's, etc. I have Rick Fielding's, Hissyfit, one of InOBU's. Or the Mudcat collections. I'm also looking for a CD (if it exists) of the 1970s recording (double LP -- which I have) of "Canto General" by Mikis Theodorakis, with the French National Chorus and Maria Farandouri. NOT the German recording which seems to be the only CD available.

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting?
Uh, Curmudgeon and I probably have the largest private collection in New Hampshire, USA.

9. what is your t-shirt size?
H for homungus (I like 'em roomy). I'm goddess-shaped, so 3X at least. I don't have (alas) a Mudcat T-shirt or sweatshirt.

10. do you collect anything? if so, what?
Maps, hippocampuses, rubber squid, rubberstamps and printing paraphernalia, skulls and interesting bones, rocks, shells, green men, mermaids. . . I think I collect collections.

11. what are some of your other hobbies?
Gravestone rubbing and research on gravestone carvers, learning how to cut slate, gardening, making bead jewelry, rubberstamp art, needlepoint.

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?
Silver

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like.

Maybe later (I keep saying that) . . . if I think of anything. Oh, I'm a sucker for fancy scented bath stuff.

Remember that "negative hints" such as allergies might also be helpful.
I'm allergic to penicillin and blue mussels -- and carnations, not that I think this will really help my SS (Aw, no blue mussels!). And I really don't care for the color orange unless it's edible or a flower up against a blue or purple back drop.

OK, OK, I'm back...... Done my first Festival gig now so can breathe easier & stop practising for a while!

Dear, Lovely Santa.... Please accept my apologies for the antici       pation. Here's last year's answers hurriedly checked & edited (hope the answers are connected to the right questions):

1. Still Mid-40's

2. Definitely Female

3 & 9. Love Purple especially my Large MudChoc T Shirt, oh & Black, especially my new special order MudCat V T Shirt!

4 & 5. Have read all Terry Pratchett's (luckily I forget them quickly so I can read 'em again, good value huh?). Any science fiction or fantasy, dragons & wizzards, fiction, thrillers, crime etc. Second-hand is good, dogeared and with broken spines are perfectly acceptable, shows they're recommended!

6 & 7. Traditional Folk, a capella singing, contempory folk, female voice, classical (anything that's good, stuff you've done, anything of Catters, ones with good songs to try).

10 & 12. love interesting crafty earrings, pierced & dangly!!! Silver-tone seems to go best with my favourite colours. Seem to have accumulated stones from various places & beaches...

13. Love Cats, Chocolate, plants & trees, secret gardens, interesting places, earth powers, intuition & friendship.

Allergies yes, mainly alkaline-forming foods (have never eaten fruit so that's a definite negative). Luckily there aren't many other negatives in my life apart from the food!

Love the newspaper idea.....

Dear Santa

Thank you for all the presents you gave me last year. This year I'm sending my Secret Santa a few ideas:

1. what is your age range?
48. I know that is a specific not a range!

2. gender?
Male - very definitely, and very red blooded!

3. Do you have a favorite color?
Deep reds, plum and particularly burgundy.

4. favorite authors/ type of book?
Fiction - Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Patrick O'Brian (good humorous science fantasy or early 19th Century naval)
Non-fiction - history - particularly mid eighteenth century onwards. British Railway history

5. what books have you really been wanting?
Patrick O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin novels other than Master and Commander, Post Captain, The Thirteen Gun Salute, and Blue At The Mizzen

6. what type of music do you like?
Most - but particularly Baroque and traditional. The traditional music of my Santa's home area would be reeeeeeally cool.

7. what cds have you really been wanting?
Too many to think about!

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting?
Ealing Comedies. I have a particular yearning for Passport to Pimlico, but that's only because I used to work for a company with a head office just over Vauxhall Bridge Road from Pimlico.

Generally XL

10. do you collect anything? if so, what?
Too many things!

11. what are some of your other hobbies?

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?
The only jewellery I normally wear is a watch and a wedding ring. But that's probably because I got bored with piercings, so I stopped wearing an ear ring, and I've never possessed any sort of pendants or medallions. Especially gold ones. On the other hand, I may go back to a single ear ring…

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like
I'm married with two kids!

Remember that "negative hints" such as allergies might also be helpful.
I get hay fever, and I can't stand things that skitter about quickly.

Love from el_punkoid_nouveau

I said I'd post some blank verse:

So much for the blank verse.

I looked at that list and decided to ignore it, just like last year...

I have provided some hints (modified slightly from last year) to help and and all future Secret Santas, listed in more or less, but not necessarily, descending order of preference. Just go down the list till you reach a point at which you are comfortable, and remember, it's not the value of the gift, but the thought that counts. Of course, monetary value to a degree will offset rudeness and ill feeling, so you can insult me as much as you want, provided it is in balance...

Gold Bullion bars. For ease of accounting, please supply in complete dump truck loads - if you are not a Bruce Willis Fan, I expect this one will go completely over your head... :-)

Ditto, Silver bullion...

Jewellery, Gold (with stone settings if desired) of sufficient value that merits not melting it down. For ease of accounting please supply in complete container loads ...

Ditto, Silver...

Jewellery, Gold (with stone settings if desired) of sufficiently lesser value that merits melting it down. For ease of accounting please supply in complete container loads ...

Ditto Silver...

Precious Stones. For ease of accounting please supply in complete pallet loads ...

Ditto, Semiprecious Stones...

Negotiable Bearer Bonds. For ease of accounting please supply in complete pallet loads ...

Music, your personal CDs - single copies...

Music, your personal CDs - multiple copies...

Non-Australian food or sweets or biscuits that will definitely be unavailable in Australia - be careful though as some things such as meats etc, will definitely be seized by Customs. No 'diet stuff' though as I can't stand the taste of artificial sweeteners, and yes I CAN taste most of them, apart from some of them giving me the runs etc. I'm a tea and coffee fan, and I prefer dark chocolate - the best I have found so far is the Lindt 85%.

Sheet Music (I can read anything up to full orchestral/band/choral scores - no wuckers mate!), or books new or secondhand, almost any topic. I don't have 'Rise Up Singing'... but anything old that you pick up secondhand will be appreciated. My tastes are eclectic and wide ranging, so those weird and wonderful old books from the turn of the century (I often collect them just for the tunes therein) that show you how to learn any instrument, I also like many old Oak (Music) Publications, or attempt to explain the theory of flight in the 1920's, or First Aid in WWI, or 'etiquette for young maids' etc, or anything that you think "Who the hell would want this?"... I am a 'Renaissance Man', and interested in things technical as well as artistic. Some thing like a programming manual for a Univac, or a magnetic memory core plane, for instance... I play anything keyboard (piano, harpsichord, pipe & reed organs, piano accordions), whistles, Symphonie (hurdiegurdy), hammered dulcimer, Appalachian dulcimer, autoharp, misc percussion, but also I have some old 'folk music for guitar/banjo/etc' books. I am concentrating on my collecting these days in the music field, but that is not essential - if you see something that screams 'Weird Shit Man'...'

BTW, I have the full set of Mudcat CDs.... Weird Shit Man...

I am into humour too BTW. If you want to learn something about me, see my profile, or visit http://homepage.powerup.com.au/~rhayes/vfoolshm.htm - my personal page is off that.... Weird Shit Man...

If you want to send me a T-shirt - I am about 6 ft tall and nearly 200 lbs. at least XL - 110cm + chest size - cotton ones shrink, you know. XXL or larger - I like to wear the really large ones as night shirts. I don't yet have a Mudcat one. I like Royal/Navy blue.

Last year I got some real Maple Syrup, for instance. Yum!

Things don't have to be brand new - see the bit on old books, music, etc above. Old or unusual instruments - they don't have to be big or expensive.

Favourite author - Robert Aspirin - don't have his last one, and they won't bring them into Australia. for some stupid reason.

Robin

Here's this year's update. (Yay, I finally learned how to copy-and-paste!)
1) 56, but don't let that limit you.
2) Female, but don't let that limit you.
3) Depends on what the object is. My mother says I got my color sense in a Crayola crayon box. I tend to wear blues, greens, rose shades, and black.
4) Mostly fantasy and science fiction, for fiction. Mostly folklore and storytelling for nonfiction, plus whatever I'm pursuing at the moment. History, nature, oddities in language, humor, the list goes on and on.
5) Used books are wonderful, as long as all the pages are there. If you give me something you instinctively think I'd like, I'll never tell you if I already have a copy. However, a nice used copy of Secret History of the Mongols would come in handy. Or R. J. Stewart's agan Imagery in English Folksong. And I just gave away my beloved copy of Post Wheeler's Tales from the Japanese Storytellers; come to think of it, anything by Post Wheeler is a Good Thing.
6) Traditional English-language, first and formost. Especially ballads. But I also enjoy opera, novelty/humor songs, spoken word (history, humor, or both). Used is good.
7) Ooh. T.S.Elliot's reading of Old Possom's Book of Practical Cats (fat chance). Or, if you're in England, Taffy Thomas's Take These Chains From My Heart (A do-able one at last!). Casettes are fine,or used recordings, likewise anything you think might be interesting.
8)Songcatcher, Topkapi (with Peter Ustinov), Sword of the Valiant (with Sean Connery) Macumba Love. Again, used videos/cd's are fine.
9) extra large (alas!)
10) Nothing cutsey! I seem to have an accumulation of dragons, bells, and nature themed figurines.
11) Embroidery, cross stitch and latch-hook. Reading, camping, cooking, baking, eating, and drinking. Nature. Cats. And a bit of medieval re-creation
12) I have both, but tend toward silver-tone.
13) Unless you actually run across something on this list, don't break your neck sticking to this list. My tastes cover a broad enough range that I'll probably be ecstatic with whatever you choose. In the past SS exchanges, I;ve been delighted with (among other things) local candy, Christman tree decorations, and cd's of local bands from my kind and perceptive SS's. No live animals, please, though; I'm up to capacity. Don't be scared, just have fun.

I'm also looking for two Bernard Cornwell books - The Bloody Ground and Battle Flag. Don't mind if they're second hand, but do prefer paperbacks as they are easier to hold with arthritic thumbs.

Just found out (via Google and a number of Web siytes that the latest posting date - for arrival by Christmas - to The US of A is 28/10/05.

In my case I have just enough time put my Santees present on the sliegh.

The newspaper idea is excellent. I shall wrap pressie in pretty paper and fold the local paper around it and put the whole lot in a padded envelope.

Fortunately I have a day off on 28/10 and can include the above in the other things herself finds for me to do.

At last she speaks. Me and the reindeer were well scundered. We weren't sure what to get you. You nearly ended up with the tie and socks Mrs Clause got me last year, I'm keeping the fuzzy slippers.

So you want a wee clue about me. Well let me see yes I do play music. I'm not nearly so famous as some around these parts. Even the dog howls when I play the tin whistle but what does he know. He drinks out of the toilet. He's looking at me now with the furrowed brow over the top of his newspaper. I swear to God he could read your mind. You darn't speak. He has the ould ears pricked up. He knows somethings up. Anyway Alba my dear if you have been truely good then something interesting will be wending its way to you very soon. Over and out for now, SSC.

From: SharonA

OK, Sorcha! Pesky little Nor'Easter got in my way yesterday, but it's over now. So then, Sorcha and Santa, here goes...

1. Age: 49.
2. Gender: Female.
3. Favorite color(s): Blue, primarily. :^) Also aqua, purple, maroon.
4. Favorite books: American history, especially 1700s-1800s; biographies from that era; Gnosticism and early Christianity.
5. Books wanted: "War Letters" edited by Andrew Carroll; "The Mystic Christ" by Ethan Walker III; "The Johannine Gospel in Gnostic Exegesis" by Elaine Pagels; "Weird U.S." or "Weird Pennsylvania" (or any book in the "Weird" state series).
6. Favorite music: Singer/songwriter humorists -- any from your area that I should know about?
7. CDs wanted: "Some Days" by Lou and Peter Berryman; anything by Christine Lavin; anything by Spike Jones except his Christmas CD; "The Truth Comes Out" by Susan Piper; "Semi-Conducted" or "Toast" by The Arrogant Worms; "The Music in the Wood" or "Full Throated Abandon" by Tanglefoot; sea chanties.
8. Movies wanted: "A Star Is Born" (Judy Garland-James Mason) -- the RESTORED version with out-takes and still photos that bridge the "lost" footage while the audio of that footage plays.
9. T-Shirt Size: Large.
10. Collecting: Cat items (figurines, ornaments, plaques, suncatchers, etc.). I've been searching unsuccessfully for an Enesco figurine in the Calico Kittens series entitled "A Stitch in Time Saves Nine". I'm also missing the Christmas ornaments from the Carlton Cards/American Greetings series "Merry Mischief Makers" dated 2001 and earlier (featuring kittens Miss and Chiff).
11. Hobbies: Besides songwriting for guitar and trying to learn various other instruments of mine that have been collecting dust, I like to visit craft shows, flea markets and thrift shops.
12. Jewelry: Either gold or silver is OK, though I rarely wear jewelry and I have more than I'll ever use.
13. I'd like the 2006 "Mutts" (comic strip) wall calendar; but I'd especially enjoy any postcards/photos/books about the distinctive sites and/or eccentricities of my Santa's locality (for example, the huge statue of Amos the Amish farmer in front of Zinn's Diner in Pennsylvania).
Negative hints: Please, no gifts of fragrances (candles, potpourri, cologne) or food, because of medical and dietary restrictions. I don't have much interest in cooking, and cookbooks or recipes won't inspire me to change. The same is true of gardening; I worked for a seed company for years so if I never see another seed packet or bulb it'll be too soon!

There ya go, Santa. I apologize again for my tardiness in posting this. Better late than never, they say, and I hope they're right! I promise I'll be good from now till Christmas, and hopefully I'll only get 11/12ths of a stockingful of coal!!

Remorsefully,
SharonA
