Do you have a favorite color? purr-ple, gotta be purr-ple, but other than that: shimmery colours, lots of colours. 4. favorite authors/ type of book? Unfortunately for Secret Santas I tend to buy as many books as I can find by my favourite authors (Margaret Atwood, Nevil Shute, Terry Pratchett etc) so there aren't many gaps left on the shelves there. I've nearly got all of the Nevil Shute books now, so that doesn't help much. 6. what type of music do you like? Harp music written by Turlough O'Carolan, e.g. played by Derek Bell of the Chieftains. Music is difficult because I like so many different types. Not really fond of Country & Western, though. Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: Allan C. Date: 13 Oct 01 - 09:15 AM For many of us, Clinton, god is in the imagination. The fewer specifics; the more laterality in using the imagination for selecting gifts. Besides, I am a very simple man with very simple tastes and would find satisfaction in nearly anything someone would go to the trouble of giving me. (I truly don't mean my remark to sound impolite, Clinton - it is merely an explanation.) As a good friend often says, "I have already told you more than I know!" |

Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: katlaughing Date: 14 Oct 01 - 08:57 PM Norton, I like your idea and can relate to it very well, some of my stonepeople have made their way to other Mudcatters this year, as well as a few books which needed to travel on. I love purple, love biggest, baggiest all cotton tees, can't wear anything but cotton. Love almost any kind of music except some C&W and current pop. Would love to replenish a couple of old tapes of Don Williams and/or Rex Allen, Jr. their early stuff. Books I get myself, a lot of mystery, scifi, fantasy, Native American fiction and non-fiction. Don't wear much jewellry unless it's something I've made myself, but it all gets in the way these days. I've even quit wearing a watch! I love handmade things, esp. from other Mudcatters and would be happy with anything which comes from shared sentiments, as Norton1 mentioned. Thanks, this should be fun! |

Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Oct 01 - 10:42 PM Hey Brett? What the hell is a sailor's hat? I've been sailing since I was a kid and I'm curious. There is of course the Navy thing, but I've never seen a sailor of the sail type actually wearing one. There is the Greek fisherman's cap which always looked pretty goofy to me. Ted Turner popularized the Engineer's Hat with a lot of us (me included) and about 20 years back, the classic painter's cap with the sort bill became real popular (I think I still have one laying around that advertizes Harken). Or there's the Ultimate Hat thingies which are updated versions of the hats like Bus Mosbacher wore. I thought I'd ask in case I get your name....or anyone else for that matter.(:<)) Spaw |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: SINSULL Date: 15 Oct 01 - 11:06 PM Brett wears a captain's cap kind of like the captain on Gilligan's Island. Very dashing! And he carries it off well. The problem is he wears it to death. It could be the basis of a whole new form of germ warfare. And watch the cracks about Greek fisherman's caps. Another captain wears one and looks very sexy. As did Bob Dylan before he lost his mind and went electric. Sins |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: Naemanson Date: 16 Oct 01 - 05:25 AM Sins, that hat is practically brand new! I've only just got it broken in. It is fianlly getting really comfortable and now you say it is old and worn out. Humph! Yeah, Spaw, the hat is similar to the yachting caps worn by all the rest of us armchair sailors. My current hat is similar to a Greek fisherman's cap but is made of white cotten duck instead of wool. The brim and band are dark blue. Anything similar would be great! I like the cap Bogart wore in The African Queen also. And you are right, real sailors wear watch caps or ball caps not those other things. But then, my real sailing days are over... and coming up, I hope! |

Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: Fibula Mattock Date: 16 Oct 01 - 10:21 AM ahhh, Bridget Jones is the whining neurotic heroine of the book "Bridget Jones' Diary" (which also exists in movie form). It spawned a rash of "city girl" novels which follow the same plotline as a standard "Mills and Boon" novel but with a Cosmo attitude (more sex, more alcohol) - girl wants nothing but to settle down but can't find a man, girl fancies boy, boy is nasty, girl breaks heart over boy, has relationship with him, is treated badly and then realises she actually loves her best (male) friend better and marries him and they live happily ever after (or at least til the book finishes). What annoys me is that the girls in these books are constantly obsessed with and unhappy with their looks, have jobs as PAs and secretaries, are extremely neurotic, and only find true happiness cos they get a man. Argh! Sorry - I really can't stand them. |

Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: SINSULL Date: 16 Oct 01 - 12:24 PM Brett, I did not say that your hat is old and worn out. Your comparison of it to Bogart's cap in the African Queen is quite accurate. Grubby comes to mind. Nasty. Potentially infectious...Very attractive, though. |

I can always use cook books; I had Joe Kline's biog. of Woody Guthrie last year, and wouldn't mind biogs on Pete Seeger, the Carter Family, et al. or a lot of the books in the Mudcat library list - bought Sound of The Dove from that list (with tape) and was in my element! 6. what type of music do you like? very traditional, particularly archive recordings - also bought the Shaker Hymns CD because of Mudcat; also Gospel, classical ... 7. what cds have you really been wanting? Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: Hollowfox Date: 17 Oct 01 - 06:54 PM 1) 52, but don't let that limit you. 2) Female, but don't let that limit you. 3) Depends on what the object is. My mother says I got my color sense in a Crayola crayon box. I tend to wear blues, greens, rose shades, and black. 4) Mostly fantasy and science fiction, for fiction. Mostly folklore and storytelling for nonfiction, plus whatever I'm pursuing at the moment. History, nature, oddities in language, humor, the list goes on and on. 5) Used books are wonderful, as long as all the pages are there. If you give me something you instinctively think I'd like, I'll never tell you if I already have a copy. However, a nice used copy of Secret History of the Mongols would come in handy. Or R. J. Stewart's agan Imagery in English Folksong. 6) Traditional English-language, first and formost. Especially ballads. But I also enjoy opera, novelty/humor songs, spoken word (history, humor, or both). 7) Ooh. T.S.Elliot's reading of Old Possom's Book of Practical Cats (fat chance). Pat & Victoria Garvey's 1970 Columbia album (fat chance) Bob "Fiddle" Beers Sings Psalty Psongs for Psaltry and Pfiddle (again, fat chance). Or, if you're in England, Taffy Thomas's Take These Chains From My Heart (A do-able one at last!). Casettes are fine,or used recordings, likewise anything you think might be interesting. 8)Songcatcher, O Brother Where Art Thou, Macumba Love. Again, used videos are fine. 9) Large 10) Nothing cutsey! I seem to have an accumulation of dragons, bells, and nature themed figurines. 11) Embroidery, cross stitch and latch-hook. Reading, camping, cooking, baking, eating, and drinking. Nature. Cats. And a bit of medieval re-creation 12) I have both, but tend toward silver-tone. 13) Unless you actually run across something on this list, don't break your neck sticking to this list. My tastes cover a broad enough range that I'll probably be ecstatic with whatever you choose. No live animals, please, though; I'm up to capacity. Don't be scared, just have fun. |

Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: SharonA Date: 22 Oct 01 - 07:15 PM Don't worry, Noreen; I'm posting my hints at a "laster" minute than you. Here's hoping my Secret Santa hasn't already rushed out and mailed my present! I already have more stuff than will fit in my apartment, so I'll try to restrict my hints to things I don't have at all or wouldn't mind squeezing in just one more of, rather than list all my interests: 1. What is your age range? 45... and a half. But who's counting? 2. Gender? F (for Female AND for Fat: I dangle everywhere!) 3. Do you have a favorite color? I like the color range that extends from turquoise through blue, indigo and purple to maroon – in dark but vibrant shades – plus black. 4. Favorite authors/type of book? Lots!!! For what I'd like for my "library", see #5 below. 5. What books have you really been wanting? Art books (pictures of paintings plus biography/commentary): John Singer Sargent; Klimt; Winslow Homer. Biography: The new David McCullough bio, "John Adams". Light reading: Brian Jacques, "Castaways of the Flying Dutchman"; "Seven Strange and Ghostly Tales"; "The Great Redwall Feast"; "A Redwall Winter's Tale". Also, just about anything by Orson Scott Card (except "Songmaster" and "Sarah"). Instructional music books: Nelson Riddle arrangements transposed for guitar; how to play jazz chords and progressions on guitar. 6-7. What type of music do you like/ what CDs have you really been wanting? I don't need/want any more CD's in particular at the moment; usually I pick up a CD when it contains songs I want to learn to play. 8. What VHS movies have you been wanting? "Cats & Dogs"; the new "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" DVD if it's in the price range; Brian Jacques's "Redwall" and "Mattimeo" if available on VHS; "Shrek" if it's out on video in time for Christmas. 9. What is your T-shirt size? XL (T-shirt, sweatshirt, sweater). I like designs with cats, and also Christmas and winter themes. 10. Do you collect anything? Now THERE'S a loaded question. Again, this is by no means a complete list of interests, but I'd like some addition to one of my collections of... CATS of all kinds, in all media (except alive, since I have my hands full with the one I've got) – the cuter, the better! Stuffed animals (except monkeys, gorillas, chimps or orangutans) – again, the cuter, the better! Wind-up toys and music boxes (modern or older). Cherished Teddies figurines, and other animal figurines (except monkeys, gorillas, chimps or orangutans... sorry, they're just kinda creepy to me!) (I like red pandas, though, which are actually primates... go figure). Fantasy illustrations by James Browne or Real Musgrave. 11. What are some of your other hobbies? I do have some other hobbies but I have all the equipment I need to enjoy those. Hmmm... I could do with a good slide whistle... and someone mentioned an instrument called a musical frog in the "Playing the Noseflute" thread recently and I don't have one of those! (Come to think of it, I don't have a noseflute, either.) 12. Do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry? Both are fine. I don't wear much jewelry when I wear any at all. I prefer smaller, more delicate jewelry to heavier pieces. I do not have pierced ears, or any other pierced body part. Favorite stone: opal. Novelty jewelry such as a cat pin or a cat necklace would be nice. 13. Anything else you feel is important? I guess this is the place to talk about "no-no" items... Because I have digestive problems and consequent dietary restrictions, PLEASE DO NOT consider sending me any gifts of food, coffee, tea or anything else edible. Because I also have a respiratory condition, PLEASE DO NOT consider any gifts such as candles, aromatherapy, incense, perfumes or colognes for me. I'm not fond of dolls or of figurines of people (such as Precious Moments or Hummel); I'd rather look at real people! Also, I'm not crazy about fantasy figurines like wizards, but I like dragons. Guess that's about it. Happy hunting... and happy holidays! |

Be sure to check your mail each day, because I always remember to keep in touch with special lasses. I personally like Bones and Spoons, expecially spoons, and I adore O'Carolan harp tunes. But if you don't care for them I wouldn't think of imposing them on you. Is this Ella person really a friend? hmmmmmm Should I pay any attention to her advice?
Yours always, (Still can't believe an Irish lass doesn't like O'Carolan) |

Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: GUEST,Spaw's Secret Santa Date: 23 Oct 01 - 09:59 AM I am Spaw's Secret Santa. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I can think of too many suitable gifts. Perhaps some marmite mince pies? lots of love from SSS |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: GUEST,Ella's Secret Santa Claus Date: 23 Oct 01 - 10:06 AM Elllllaaaaaaaaaaaa, oh Ellllllaaa. This is your Secret Santa, calling. Now tell me Ella, have you been a good person this year? Eaten your porridge? Said please and thank you, etc.? Oh well, you're forgiven. Your first gift comes here: Total forgiveness for any mischief you may have gotten into. No charge. Oh, about Fiji, Santa will think it over, but don't buy the Mumu just yet. |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 23 Oct 01 - 10:15 AM I have been as Fibula can verify, very well behaved. Honestly, Santa. On our trip to Ireland I was politeness personified, always said please and thankyou, and did my best to introduce Fib to just about everyone whose name I could remember. I'll even forgive Fib for her comments about the bodhran. But thankyou very much for total forgiveness. It is lovely to hear from you secret santa. I always say please, and only tease fibula about her liking the spoons. I miss my fiji friends dreadfully, but it doesn't matter if I get to see them this year there's always another time. What about getting my low A whistle returned to me from the pub in London?>? yours faithfully Ella Thank you :) |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: GUEST,the_one_and_only_Santa Date: 23 Oct 01 - 10:34 AM So, Dai, what do you REALLY want for Christmas? I guess I could give you a new neurosis to add to your current collection but that doesn't seem like very much fun..... |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: The_one_and_only_Dai Date: 23 Oct 01 - 10:59 AM Aha! There you are, Santa, pull up a chair please, let me take those boots off, won't you? The hints are difficult, aren't they?? OK, to genuinely try and help - what I REALLY want for xmas is a minidisc recorder with a good external mic, please. :-) But what I REALLY REALLY want is a small token from a friend somewhere that I can tell a story about? "so-and-so from thereabouts gave me this, and they said..." ANYTHING from the heart will be treasured (well maybe not the left ventricle), and thanks for asking... |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: GUEST,Ella's secret santa claus Date: 23 Oct 01 - 11:00 AM Well, Ella, you've convinced me. You are a sweet, shy, retiring young woman with exceptional manners. Now what was the name of the pub and exactly what is a low A whistle? Brand name? Color? Is it available here at the North Pole? Just in case the basta...uh, person who nipped it has done away with it. The elves only play these damned Zamfir pipes, which by the way I am bloody sick of. regards, Santa Claus |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: GUEST,Mmario's Secret Santa Date: 23 Oct 01 - 11:21 AM So, little boy....climb up here on my knee and tell me what you'd like for Xmas...( low and evil chuckle).Just supposing that your Santa is from the U.K, is there anything particular you would like? And have I got the right end of the stick when I assumed that we STAYED secret or do we 'fess up when we send the pressie? |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: Pseudolus Date: 23 Oct 01 - 11:43 AM The person receiving the gift should find out from you...if you want to send the present, and then a day later send a card revealing your true identity, that's probably ok too but it's not supposed to stay a permanent secret..... Frank |
Subject: RE: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD ;-) From: MMario Date: 23 Oct 01 - 11:53 AM hey - being called "little" is a prety good gift these days! Seriously, Secret Santa, should the "North Pole" be in the UK then I suspect there are many things that would please my soul. Something that would really do it - should the "North Pole" be anywhere near The Jug or other local Mudcatter watering spot - would be a cassette/CD (I can't handle minidisk) of as many mudcatters as possible. - even just laughing, or saying stupid things. |
