Subject: What's legal age to play music - UK pub? From: Nick Date: 24 Dec 06 - 09:02 AM Does anyone know what is the legal age for someone to play music in the evening in a pub? My son has started playing a few gigs and the view seems to vary from place to place. He is currently 14 and will be 15 in February. Would it make any difference if his father (ie me) was a member of the band? Would it make any difference if his father was there when he was playing? |

I don't think there is a restriction for playing but these seem to be the rules in England and Wales. Q: At what age are children / young people allowed into pubs? Currently, if a landlord has a children's certificate, children under 14 are allowed into a pub, if accompanied by an adult over 18. If the landlord does not have a children's licence, under 14s are not allowed into the bar area of the pub. Under the 2003 Licensing Act, children under 16 will be allowed into a pub, but must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over. They will not be allowed at the bar and will not be allowed to buy or consume alcohol. Only persons aged 18 or over are allowed to buy and consume alcohol in pubs. |

Our young players have all gone to uni now but they stayed till about 10pm. Also may be nice to ask the musicians if they are happy to have a youngster playing along with them. Very much depends on how encouraging they are. Its all part of session ettiquette. I think its great to encourage young players. fxx |

From: oggie Date: 25 Dec 06 - 04:40 AM If he is being paid then there are a whole raft of possible problems concerning the employment of school age children (those under 16). For the most part these are ignored UNLESS something happens when they become another stick to beat you with. Both my brother and I played in bands in our mid-teens and because of my father's job (local education officer) it all had to be above board which got a drag on occassions. Check out the directgov website for full details. Playing in pubs (umpaid) does depend on the licence conditions and the attitude of the landlord. Merry Christmas oggie |

From: selby Date: 25 Dec 06 - 04:53 AM It depends on the landlord locally my 2 have been playing in sessions in pubs from a young age extended stays on school holidays no problem but where thrown (right word) out of a well known Whitby pup at 9 O Clock during folk week, Police very keen and landlord afraid for his licence.Talk to the lanlord and remember no might be for his right reasons not yours. |

From: shepherdlass Date: 19 May 07 - 06:19 AM In the late 1980s/early 1990s my band took on a young sax player who was only 11 or 12 when he first played in a pub with us. The pub managers generally used their discretion and - seeing how responsible the lad's parents are - were happy for him to perform. He went on to win the Stan Getz Award, so the early dues paying obviously did him some good. |

England and Wales (I think) has more or less uniform rules, those for Scotland vary wildly from place to place and depend on the time of day, the layout of the pub and whether the place has a children's licence. There is really no way to know what age someone would be permitted in a particular area in a pub in Scotland at a particular time without asking the landlord specifically. |

They have been like trained "Ramsy Bonet" figures...toured by their mothers for drinks (mother of course) and tips.

Children 14 to 17 years old must be with an adult to enter a pub. There are also children friendly certificates introduced, where children under 14 years old are allowed in a pub with an adult, providing the landlord has a children friendly certificate. But people under 18 can’t buy or drink any alcohol in the pub, accept for 16 and 17 year olds who can be served beer, cider or wine in a pub or restaurant with a meal with an adult or buy and drink a shandy in a pub or shop. However, 5 to 17 year olds are allowed to drink alcohol separate from licensed premises. |

At that time you were allowed in to a pub at 14 but not allowed to drink alcohol. i just wanted to hear the music i was not intersted in trying to get alcohol. a year later i was going to lescousins ,great music but no alcohol, i just wanted the music |

People 18 years old and over can buy and drink alcohol in a licensed premises or shop, accept it is 16 and over for shandies. 16 and 17 year olds can drink beer, cider or wine in a licensed premises if it is served with a meal, they are with an adult and an adult buys the alcohol for them. 14 to 17 year olds with an adult and can’t buy or drink any alcohol and 18 year olds and over without an adult can enter a pub and under 14 year olds will be allowed to enter with an adult if the landlord has a children friendly certificate. 5 to 17 year olds can drink alcohol at home or in other private houses with an adult and under 5 year olds can’t drink any alcohol unless with a doctor in a medical situation. |

I've seen one sign on a pub door explicitly saying children over 8 were allowed during the day. It depends on local licencing rules and what licences a specific pub has. Doesn't London have its own rules to some extent? |

I remember children friendly certificates introduced in the nineties which would allow children under 14 years old to also enter a pub with an adult and I was slightly younger than 14. |
