Latest Nick Park creation running in an afternoon on BBC1 and early morning on BBC2. Based on the Sheep in the Wallace & Grommit cartoon 'A Close Shave'. No dialogue, and the sort of humour that used to be in things like Magic Roundabout. Very funny!

I have loved the ones I've seen but Geoff is right CBBC tend to run everything on an eternal loop so all the episodes will get repeated often enough to record. If you haven't got digital they are probably repeated at some ungodly hour on weekend mornings too.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. There are a lot of American fans of Wallace & Grommit, but it might take awhile for Shaun the Sheep to appear on American TV.

By the way, I believe there's a pun here that most Americans would miss, that is, Shaun = Shorn.

Is Shaun just an alternate spelling of Sean? Is it pronounced the same? Who uses Shaun?

Shaun is quite a common anglicised spelling for Sean, to help make sure it gets pronounced right, I suppose (which isn't the case with the other altyernative spelling, Shane).

My sheep collection is definitely lacking, I really must have a Shaun.

My penguin collection has a Wallace & Grommit penguin (dunno what his name is so I checked Wikipedia & he's called Feathers McGraw!)

Yes, we Americans get that "Shaun=shorn". Well, most of us do. It's pretty obvious in the original context when he gets named "Shaun" after having his wool shaved off and knitted into a sweater.

So how on earth would you pronounce it?

I suppose you might pronounce "Shaun" is some other way, to rhyme with "gown" or something like that, but both in these films and in the original film it gets repeatedly pronounced in the customary way.

And I can't really see how "shorn" could really be pronounced any differently. I know the English sometimes go in for some pretty weird pronunciations, but the Americans generally seem to prefer to pronounce words the way they look like they should be pronounced.

There's an 'r' in "Shorn" which is pronounced in some parts of England (e.g. the West Country; parts of Lancashire), which would mean it was not pronounced exactly the same as "Shaun". In the south-east, though, the 'r' is probably silent, so in that case you are probably correct, McGrath of The South-East :-)

"Shorn", with a hard "r". Some regional accents--New England, some places in the South--might drop the "r" but a generalized American accent would pronounce it quite clearly.

Also, mostly in America "Shaun" (usually "Sean" or "Shawn") has a pretty broad "a" sound that would sound less like "shorn" even with a dropped "r" ("sho'n"). With the drawls we have here it would almost be two syllables: "SHAW-wun".

Well, like I said--the pun is pretty obvious in context, even to Americans. Also, I always thought Wallace's pronunciation sort of hinted at an "r", but maybe that's the normal UK pronunciation (?? I don't currently know any Brits named Shaun).

I was about to say that Peter Sallis (the voice of Wallace, and also a member of the cast of the series Last of the Summer Wine, set in Yorks) may have been from Lancs, but I just discovered he is in fact from Twickenham, so bang goes that theory.

However, Aardman Animations is based in Bristol, so if he went there to do the voice-overs he could have unconsciously picked up the local accent :-)

I can't see how peronouncing with or without an r or leaving it out would really make much difference in wordplay like this. Puns aren't normally as exact as all that.

There is a slight difference between the two cases (the 'r' is pronounced or left silent), but as you say, in the context of a pun, it shouldn't really make much difference to the understanding.
