Boycott may have batted on water but wasn't he also arrested and found guilty for batt(er)ing his girlfriend in France back in 1996? Not a good example to stand up for is he (though I do recognise you were obviously just joking about the use of the word 'boycott')?

As this thread is showing, and the actions of others elswhere, the days of some men being able to trash women and get away with it are severely numbered. Good people will no longer stand idly by and watch it happen especially when someone is in the public domain thinks they are invincible and able to get away with it.

If the good folk of this thread are anything to go by then then that 'man's' future is very uncertain. Slut or whore (words initiated by men against women in the first place) are labels earned in the face of great personal cost and tragedy often. That a man would use such a term against a woman says far more about him than it does her in any circumstance.

You are good people on this thread and have brought me out of silence to say something. Thanks for taking a stand :-)

Of course the word many of the advertisers use (like AOL) is that they have "suspended" advertising. Sounds to me like they'd be happy to get back to his market as soon as they can.

I've just listened to part of Rush's show today. He's practically doubling down on the issue. He admits that the words he used were wrong and says that he regrets sinking to the level of the leftists who do this type of thing all the time. It's Obama's socialist agenda that got this issue into the media in the first place.

He also regrets losing the sponsors because they made huge profits from being on his show.

If he'd had my eldest he'd wish he'd taken up the occupation of alligator wresting instead of radio 'talk show' host. When she was about five I was helping her learn wing chun--that was her introduction to martial arts. While teaching her a thing called a round house kick I missed a block and I saw all those little stars astronomers keep looking for. Whap. I remind her of that from time to time and we still chuckle about it. She's known all her life that I will not fight her battles for her but I will help her fight any battle that comes her way.

I'd go a step further and say it is society's health that was attacked by Rush Limbaugh, and the issue affects women AND men. They are not two solitudes.

I do not need some bigoted loudmouth spewing his 'hatred du jour' about issues that impact women. I have daughters, and it ain't just the female of the specie that will defend its young. In as much as I think women should be royally pissed off over the things that piece of filth said, I feel that men should be also.

I read a remark on a social network site and the young lady said words to the effect that "The tweeting and letters/calls to the advertisers are working. Women do have power." That view is narrow, because many men are in this fight, too. Trouble is that people used to have power, but it's been eroded by people like Limbaugh, people like Palin. Hatred is not gender-specific, imo. YMMV.

I looked through the comments on his site, and the petition site. I find it hugely ironic that the members of the party he supports who want to get elected go on about how great and wonderful America is, while the admirable spirit that actually started the place can more clearly be seen in the petition supporters than the Limbaugh supporters, who, if possible, are more foul brained than he is.

(Don't get me wrong here, but I think the Declaration and the Constitution are the pinnacle of the thinking that started with the British radicals from the 14th century onwards, and regard it as a great shame that it had to go across the Atlantic to happen.)

(And another aside - Santorum was going on about freedom from monarchs as if George III was the only voice that counted over here, when he was already bound to follow Parliament. Which was bent. In the grip of rich magnates who paid no attention to the people. The people? What have they got to do with anything? Does that sound familiar?)

Rush earned (?) the money for all this splendor by pandering to the hatreds and prejudices—and the ignorance—of his Right-Wing listeners.

If anyone's asking me, the Conservatives are scared for once, and that's a good thing, imo. I'm hoping this gal will sue Limbaugh, because there's little doubt she'll win, and lawyers/law firms will be tripping over each other to prosecute the case on her behalf. Perhaps she could name the radio stations that broadcast his remarks in the suit for damages. That would be beautiful to see. And ol' Rush baby will be looking for a job.

I don't know about that, Greg F. He's losing his sponsors. Some may come back but others won't. Any new ones may sign up only on the condition that he tone it down. We may be witnessing the final days of Rush Blowhard as a relevant force in the conservative right. Much like Glenn Beck he's making himself appeal only to the hardcore haters of his audience. I have to believe followers have been falling away if his sponsors are ready to walk.

He has saturated America and there's nowhere to go but down. As soon as a loudmouth/bombastic host is forced to apologize, that's usually it for him. It's a coast downhill after that. It's a show of weakness for these types and it never has the intended effect.

Carbonite is the sixth sponsor to leave him. It looks like the second part of their initial response was key, John in Kansas. Here's what the CEO posted on Facebook, according to ThinkProgress:

No one with daughters the age of Sandra Fluke, and I have two, could possibly abide the insult and abuse heaped upon this courageous and well-intentioned young lady. Mr. Limbaugh, with his highly personal attacks on Miss Fluke, overstepped any reasonable bounds of decency. Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show. We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse.

It doesn't matter that his apology isn't sincere. Everybody knows that. What's important is that it shows he can be humbled rather than forcing everybody else to be humbled by him. Once he saw his advertisers leaving and none jumping in to take their place, he HAD to apologize.

It could lead to a loss of audience for him because they won't like the fact that he apologized--especially if it was just to keep his corporate sponsors. They've always loved his complete refusal to be humbled or to admit he was wrong. To see him get down on one knee makes them wince. You know it makes him wince. This may be the small leak that sinks the big bloated ship.

While I saw the new headline saying that there had been an "apology" I assumed that it was as phony as his usual stuff, and didn't bother to read it. The summaries posted above confirm my good judgement in the matter.

Also, while archiving (digitizing) some older material, I came across an "Interview with Rush Limbaugh" from 1993 or 1994. While it got scanned with the rest of the publication it was in, I didn't really bother to read it, since shit hardly ever changes its smell. I suppose I could go back and look at it, but I doubt if I'll bother with anything he might have to say (although questions by the interviewers might indicate whether they knew then what kind of turd they were talking to?, and I suspect they did).

I don't find anything in his list of sponsors that I'd be likely to think of using, but I'll keep the list handy just in case. (If you're going to sponsor a liar you're obviously trying to sell to people who are ready to believe lies. If, as with the Carbonite response at 02 Mar 12 - 05:32 PM, you don't care who pushes your stuff, you've already descended below my level of interest.)

It was meant to characterize his audience/followers as sick fucks in either case. I was trying to be a tad humourous. After all, in the face of absolute human garbage, one can try to make fun of the problem or shove a huge didlo up his ass as has been suggested.

Jim Dixon, good point and thanks for the link. I do recall calling the PD of a local one, I think it was the one that carries the Bum-Rush, and didn't get anywhere with him. He was polite, but mostly turned a deaf ear. We agreed to disagree. May be a new person or station, now, though. I'll check.

The hand therapist I was going to is middle of the road, mostly liberal. He listens every Friday for a weekly *fix* of idiocy. We'd sit and laugh at the ludicrous trash mouths go on and on, but also realising there are some folks who take it for gospel. He had to keep it turned down low as the other therapists couldn't stomach it.

Perhaps he'll lose his voice, literally.In the meantime boycotting is GOOD!

A more effective route might be to complain to your local radio station that carries Rush Limbaugh's show.

Several years ago I emailed my local talk-radio station to complain about Dr. Laura Schlessinger. (I used to listen to her regularly in my car while I drove to work, although I usually disagreed with her and didn't like her.) I got a reply from the program manager. It was very brief, and I can't remember exactly what it said, but I got the impression it was not a "canned" response, but personally and individually written. He thanked me for my opinion and sort of implied that a lot of people were telling him the same thing. A few weeks later, they canceled her show. (I mean, her show continued to be produced and syndicated, but my local talk-radio station no longer carried it.) I can't remember what they replaced her with; it might have been something equally obnoxious, but I considered it a victory nonetheless.

Whatever you say, I think it's helpful to give the impression (I assume your ethics don't allow you to outright lie) that you generally like talk-radio and would be a regular listener if only they replaced Rush Limbaugh with something more decent and credible. It might be helpful to praise some other program that's carried by the same station—or, if you can't do that in good conscience—praise a show that's carried by some other station such as NPR. You definitely don't want to give the impression that you wouldn't listen to their station no matter what they do, because then they have no incentive to try to please you.
