"All Good Catholics know that Saturdays are for the Joyful Mysteries." You mean, like, how can so many Catholic Irish play for ManU at one time? Especially that young Irishman Renaldo. I'd like to know where he gets those football magnets for his feet... there's a Joyful Mystery! And, speaking of mysteries, how the hell did Keane get that striking foot back? It's like he's been resurrected! What a game today.

Hey, it's my way. You have yours, I have mine. I'll bet JP would enjoy the highlights. It was an excellent game.

BTW, it's the 40th anniversary of Vatican II. But then Mary, since you don't pay much attention to your mother church, you probably didn't know that either.

You're one of the followers of the Mel Gibson Pre-Vatican II Holy Pontificating Church of the Hollywood Hills, perhaps?

I don't see what the problem is- soon as he's unconscious and unable to communicate, stick a few tubes in him and keep him artificially alive. We can have this Pope around for a couple more decades, at least!

The official Catholic view as applied re: Terry Schiavo should be good enough for the Pope as well, no?

Poopagator, Mary G, that's just what I was trying to say. He may not have had the best ideas, he may have actioned ideas that I personally don't agree with, but he had the strength of character to remain faithful to his ideas and see them through.

(Personally, I suspect a lot of the more conservative stuff was on advice from the Vatican Mob.... he seemed to be much more liberal when he was first elected....)

Oh guest...I am a little confused about what the reforms of the Vatican II were...true, we have to be nice to Protestants now, and sing ugly songs..but we still aren't supposed to get divorced even in bad situations, still not supposed to use birth control in tragic situations. Still have a culture of celibacy that gets twisted into child abuse situations. So I personally would use the word reform lightly. He's a good guy, a decent man, and that is good enough for me. I remain confused about such issues as the Virgin Birth, but common decency does go a long way. mg

Where exactly was it you lost the plot there mg?

JP is the first celebrity pope. He packed 'em into stadiums, but couldn't get 'em into the pews. That's the true failure of this papal run. His conservate attack on Vatican II reforms, his cashing in on celebrity, his barnstorming to every country, pumping out the propaganda about the "transparent papacy" and all that crap didn't do jack to reverse the trend of the people bleeding from the church in the first world, and the superstitious traditionalists from the third world flocking to him as a "mystic" claiming to be on the side of the poor (in his Italian designer shoes that apparently rivalled the Imelda collection) to hitch their git along to.

Just because somebody has a title, doesn't mean they are deserving of our respect. That is just as true (and probably more so with religious political leaders) for a pope as it is for a president or prime minister.

Vicar of Rome is the pope's stand-in for mass, and I'm not sure what all else.

Apparently not just the appointments. ABC is reporting he made the papal appointments, said mass, the stations of the cross, and blessed the Black Madonna's (the Polish icon at the Vatican) gold crown. Busy day for a guy who is supposedly on death's door.

GUEST, I know the Pope is Polish. His election as the first non-Italian in, like, forever, was a surprise and "broke the mold" for all future conclaves. Re-read what I wrote.

Are you correct in your assertion the "he" appointed a bunch of bishops and cardinals today?

I wouldn't be surprised, actually. The Pope has long been a figurehead as far as day-to-day operations are concerned, and the clique that runs the Vatican is notorious for how jealously they weild their considerable power. The possible scenario of a semi-comatose JP hanging on to life ~ and nominal authority ~ for weeks/months/years, a la Ms. Schiavo, would provide a field day (well, more than one day, certainly) for that conniving bunch.

Despite the power of the "invisible" rulers of the Vatican, the Pope himself has tremendous influence and is probably the one World Leader with the greatest personal power of all. JPII, for all his faults and shortcomings, seems to me to have been a basically positive force throughout his tenure.

From a radio news program:
People have been renting buildings with a view of the Vatican for over ten years now in anticipation of being on the roof to see the white smoke announcing the election of a new Pontiff.

And Spaw is worried about how many people could be fed and clothed on the price of his ring? Millions of dollars for a ten second view of a chimney. Unbelievable! Until you remember the millions spent on views of Times Square and the "ball" for the Millenium celebration, I guess.

I disagreed strongly with John Paul's conservative view of Catholicism but respect him and wish him an easy passing.

As pope he has known and assisted in the cover up of the pederast clergy. He is responsible for the pain and suffering the rapes have cost, if for no other reason than he is the Pope, the leader of his religion.

A big part of the drama and concern over the death of a Pope is anticipation of the next Pope. For the first time in centuries, it's not a likely bet that it'll be an Italian Vatican insider. The surprise election of JP put an end to that monopoly.

It probably will be another conservative type, though. Progressive Catholicism as practiced in the US and Western Europe may well continue to be more and more marginalized, valued as a major source of income but ignored/suppressed when it comes to theology, scholarship, etc.

The Church is thriving in those parts of the world where it is most conservative, notably in the southern hemisphere and "third world." An African Pope is still probaly unlikley, but don't be surprised to see a Latin American get elected.

I just talked to Mum. She said she knows he has passed but the announcement will not be made until all Cardinals have been informed personally and they begin to make their way to the Vatican. Rather matter-of-factly. I asked her what she was having for supper... fish of course, but no wine, as she's been having dizzy spells. Hmmmm.

Guest at 03:33 PM... don't put words in my mouth. By doing so, you only undermine your own post. Oh yeah... poof, you're a Fairy.

Actually, I disagree with your assessment of the pope's effectiveness, gnu.

I have a sister in law, who is a nun, and heads up the religion department at a major Catholic university. She didn't like the pope either. In fact, she and many American Catholic progressives like her, think this pope was TERRIBLE for Catholicism. He was extremely conservative, and did all he could to turn back the tide of Vatican II. As to being an anti-war pope, puhleez! He sure wasn't anti-war when the war was on the poor in Latin America, that's for sure!

He didn't even bat an eye when Archbishop Romero was assassinated.

So, don't go lecturing to the world that we "must" admit anything, just to agree with YOUR opinion of the pope.

Celebration and mourning:

For all who pass, we celebrate their life. We also rejoice in their final peace. However, we are human. We cannot help but feel sad at OUR loss, at what WE will miss because of this departure.

As for JP, most Catholics know at least a little bit about him. He has been a great leader of our religion. Whether you agree with the religion or not, it's difficult to disagree with his leadership and his devotion to bring the religion forward. If he has not done so fast enough for you, you don't understand the religion.

PS - The ring thing... if anyone is hungry, anyone, they can get food, clothing and shelter at the Catholic Church... no questions asked, no strings attached.
