Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 08 Oct 07 - 06:34 PM Have a look at this Flickr collection of pictures of Burano, the island in the Venetian lagoon where they really know about how houses can be painted to make places look good. |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: SINSULL Date: 08 Oct 07 - 11:33 AM Benjamin Moore makes a Linen White which was and maybe still is the biggest selling color of all. It is a warm creamy white that softens a room. Not stark whitewash white. That is hideous. |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Bee Date: 08 Oct 07 - 11:22 AM Ah, hindsight... This was our first house, and I do love it, but if we ever buy or build another, or renovate this one... There will be no bathroom directly off the main living area. There will be no Galley style kitchen, and no 'kitchen island', either, just a nice open kitchen. No bathtub will be placed under a roofslant, especially with the plumbing at the wrong end. Ditto closets. There will be a basement. Door and window placement will be carefully considered. Whoever designed this place made it devoid of stretches of walls without doors, baseboard heaters, propane fireplaces, closets, against which one might place couches, beds, large bureaus. There will be a window over the kitchen sink, dammit. And so on... |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 08 Oct 07 - 12:38 AM A child's room will always look bigger if you remove the child. As for waiting for a buyer before doing the kitchen, that's a lovely idea. So many housebuyers rip out the kitchen regardless of how long it's been there. Hell, I want to rip out ours and start it again and it's less than 10 years old. Mind you, that's partly because the company that put it in made so many design and measurement errors and the oven they put in is terrible. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: gnu Date: 07 Oct 07 - 05:05 PM Dunno if anyone said this... busy day... have not read this thread... Kitchen & Bath or Kid's Room white washable semi-gloss on walls and ceiling... makes a room look muck bigger, brighter and cleaner. And, it's much easier to clean and does not need to be painted again for at least five years. Yes. I AM serious. |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Bee Date: 07 Oct 07 - 11:57 AM Any pale colour is easy to cover in one good coat with the paint available these days. I know the prevailing contractors' wisdom is to do it all white, but they've been doing so for so many years that I suspect a little colour might make a house stand out from all the other dreary commercial white new homes. I know when we were house hunting I got very cynical about all that white, and also, white paint hides nothing: every little flaw and every nail dent that wasn't perfectly filled shows up - not that Bobert's left any of those... ;-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Sorcha Date: 07 Oct 07 - 11:51 AM Off/antique/eggshell whatever white then. If the buyer's don't like it, white stuff is easier to cover up!!! And it goes with any decorating scheme! |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Bobert Date: 07 Oct 07 - 11:48 AM Well, WYSuziz, the realtor said to paint it all white... But that seems too stark for me... The furniture is a good idea for like the large living room but I'm not planning on putting the kitchen in until I find a buyer because I think they would like some say in picking out cabinets, countertops and appliances... Same with bathrooms... The tubs are in, of course... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: wysiwyg Date: 07 Oct 07 - 11:40 AM Ask the realtor (even if you're not using one) and follow their advice. It's not about how YOU like it, but about what will sell it best and quickest. And furnish it to show it, even if only with a few pieces and a couple of colorful area rugs. Furnished homes look bigger and sell better. ~S~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Cats Date: 07 Oct 07 - 07:34 AM Try 'hint of' colours. They are white with a slight touch of... in them. Dulux make them but others do their own. |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Bee Date: 06 Oct 07 - 11:15 PM I finally left beige and white behind last year and painted the main room, hall and stairwell a pale warm lettuce green. The wood work (we've a lot of pine) looks wonderful with it; in winter it reminisces of summer; and a vase of any flowers, but particularly pink ones, looks like a bit of heaven. |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: katlaughing Date: 06 Oct 07 - 10:26 PM If you go HERE and "launch the visualizer" you can see their whole range of colours and see patches of them put up as well as whole rooms painted with them, at the touch of the mouse. (I wish it was that easy to really paint!) I really like Sherwin-Williams paint. They also have a very thick colour thing which they will give you. It's not a wheel, rather samples of all colours available which you can take home to hold it up and see what you think. |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Ebbie Date: 06 Oct 07 - 09:35 PM Rap, a tenant of mine did that. With the proviso that he would repaint when he vacated. But he got sick of the color long before that. |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Rapparee Date: 06 Oct 07 - 09:27 PM Paint every black -- floors, walls, ceiling. Hide the construction defects that way. |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Ebbie Date: 06 Oct 07 - 09:26 PM For several generations the advice has been to use white, for the reasons given above. However, more and more people are accenting whole walls in a vivid color (violet and mauve and other shades of blue-green, Peace?); the trick would be to guess which color suits which persons. So I would go with white. Actually, I'm not so sure of that- when I fantasize about a room, I always visualize a pale peach- that shade goes well with white and dark and natural woods - and once I read that peach is the color that best suits all manner of skin tones. |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: GUEST,dianavan Date: 06 Oct 07 - 09:15 PM If its for sale, paint it off white. White Lace (Mills paint) is a soft, creamy white that looks great. White makes the rooms look bigger and bighter. Stay away from refridgerator white. Let the new owners choose their own colours. |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Rapparee Date: 06 Oct 07 - 08:37 PM ... My aunt painted her halls in a muted sage green... I read that second "h" as a "b".... I suggest a pale, eggshell white. They'll paint over it eventually so make it easy for them. An extremely pale peach would be nice and warm too. |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Sorcha Date: 06 Oct 07 - 06:46 PM White. Then whoever buys it won't have to like the colours..they can add them, or decorate to suit themselves. |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 06 Oct 07 - 06:13 PM If you look at the variety of "white" paint these days you'll be amazed. My aunt painted her halls in a muted sage green (flat paint) that makes everything you put near it or hang on it look stunning. I'm going to do my hall in that one of these days. I have been looking for information about painting ceilings--it isn't always as easy as just painting them white. In a room full of wood (pecan) panels that end at a picture rail, a vivid color on the wall above would do a lot to pull the eye up beyond the paneling, and then there are the ceiling beams and the ceiling itself. Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Peace Date: 06 Oct 07 - 05:47 PM I'm your man. If it's colours, just let me know. No job too big, no job too small. I have an inside track on a new shade of lavender. You'll like it I think. The easily fooled think it's red. Little do they know. I enjoy working in flower-type colours: violet, mauve and other shades of blue-green. Anyway, if I can offer any advice, just lemme know. |

Subject: RE: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 06 Oct 07 - 05:44 PM I would never entertain beige at one time but I've done one of the bedrooms in one of the shades of beige (trying to be fashinable with neutral colours!) and it looks a bit mushroomy - lovely. |

Subject: BS: Question: New House Wall Colors??? From: Bobert Date: 06 Oct 07 - 05:40 PM Well, well, well... I have finally rounded the bend on the spec house I have been building for the last 18 months and it's time to paint the walls and I know not to put too much color on them but I'm not wild about white-white so... how 'bout it folks... Oh, the house is rustic with real cedar siding, large brich chimney, vailted ceilings (great room and master bedroom)... I am going to paint all the ceilings white... So, opinions... Oh yeah... If this were my house to live in I wouldn't have any problems with color but it's just been listed "For Sale"... Thanks... Bobert |
