Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: GUEST,The Bastard Son Of Marty Feldman Date: 28 Jun 08 - 03:17 PM On the subject of other eating places in Whitby......... You have to try The Courtyard Cafe, It's up the alleyway between the 2 Astins offices off Flowergate. Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, great food and drink and LARGE portions. Good value too. Try it during folk week. It knocks spots off Java across the road which is used by many folkies. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: LesB Date: 28 Jun 08 - 01:35 PM Fo combination of price & quality, i've always liked Alexanders. I won't queue fo hours for fish & chips (Magpie) & why would you want Chablis with fish & chips? For other eating out I miss Garriga's. Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: GUEST,Chris Murray Date: 28 Jun 08 - 12:28 PM I like the Magpie, queues and all. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: paula t Date: 28 Jun 08 - 11:40 AM I've tried a few shops over the last few years. I was there as part of a school residential 2 weeks ago (32 key stage 2 children). We ate fish and chips on the beach. All the children enjoyed the chips, most tried the fish and enjoyed it and most even agreed to try the mushy peas and actually liked them! They also enjoyed the envious looks they got from other school parties who were eating their sandwiches! A fantastic place. The children loved it. I can seriously recommend the youth hostel by the Abbey -newly refurbished and serving excellent home made food in a restaurant open to the public during the day.(Even sold organic beers and wines - but unfortunately can't tell you what they taste like as we don't drink when on residentials. Maybe I'll visit without school next time!) |

Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: selby Date: 28 Jun 08 - 11:10 AM silver street for me fried to order. For those who are pondering where it is thats opposite where the albion used to be. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Lowden Jameswright Date: 28 Jun 08 - 09:02 AM It's a joke to imagine that the Magpie is the only place that gets top quality fish. I tried it, ate very average fish, chips and peas, got utterly sick of being shoved in the back as folk struggled to shift around the tables (and after all that ridiculous queuing) - what a waste of time and money; never again thanks. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Mo the caller Date: 28 Jun 08 - 07:50 AM There is NO best chippy in Whitby. We've had excellent fish one day, gone back the next and got what tased like last week's fish. Pure luck. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: GUEST,The Bastard Son Of Marty Feldman Date: 28 Jun 08 - 04:08 AM I'm local and believe me, The Magpie takeaway is the best. Closely followed by Hadleys and The Quarterdeck (by the pier). |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: GUEST,raggytash Date: 27 Jun 08 - 08:40 PM The Riverside, twixt Middle Earth and The Bottom House was Whitby Chip shop of the year (voted by Whitby Gazette readership) and is in my humble the best and quite reasonably priced ... for Whitby that is |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: GUEST,ancient briton Date: 27 Jun 08 - 07:51 PM Magpie takeaway every time. Peerless haddock. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Steve Gardham Date: 27 Jun 08 - 05:19 PM I believe Liza's Uncle George is the official taster for Whitby haddock. At least I've never seen him pay for one yet. He should be consulted by the serious haddock seeker. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Steve Gardham Date: 27 Jun 08 - 05:15 PM Sorry for mixing me Baxters and me Flowers. The Quarterdeck, last one after the bandstand before you get your feet wet still does a good un but the chef who was there used to do a haddock Provencal that was out of this world. Where did he go? Worth following. Steve |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 27 Jun 08 - 08:57 AM We stopped in flat directly overlooking the Silver Street fishery - Good location and a lovely flat but I must have put about 3 stone on that week - How can anyone resist that smell:-) Incidentaly there's an alley that runs from Silver Street to the front that almost links Silver Street fisheries and the Maggie. D. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: GUEST,Cats Date: 27 Jun 08 - 08:54 AM I'll second Hadleys and there is also a little place in Silver Street [I think] which does excellent haddock. As for Chablis, why stop at that? You can choose whatever wine you want at Rick Stein's chip shop in Padstow! |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: theleveller Date: 27 Jun 08 - 08:20 AM Good enough for me, Dave. Just mind you don't get a belt round the ear with a wet halibut. Or even worse, a large portion of Scarborough Woof. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 27 Jun 08 - 08:13 AM why would you want to annoy a chip shop owner? Coz, like, man - He own's it, man. He OWNS it, like, man. All property if theft, man, so, he's like the man, man. Anyway, man, why all the hastle, man, it's, like, not cool, man... (It's a slow afternoon) :D |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Mrs.Duck Date: 27 Jun 08 - 08:07 AM There is another good one just past the middle earth. We like Siggy's too because you can sit in but its not a restaurant so you don't pay more for doing so but when you've got young kids eating out on the street doesn't always work. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Backwoodsman Date: 27 Jun 08 - 07:32 AM :-) LOL, Leveller! |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: glueman Date: 27 Jun 08 - 06:45 AM The Magpie was rather good when we went but it was only the once as I hate queueing. Glad they're doing takeaway, always fancied sitting on the harbour wall eating lobster thermidore out of last week's newspaper. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: theleveller Date: 27 Jun 08 - 06:21 AM Just offering a little relief to those poor benighted folk who haven't the benefit of living in god's own county. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Backwoodsman Date: 27 Jun 08 - 05:42 AM "And where alse can you get an excelent Chablis with your haddock?" "The Oysterage at Orford in Suffolk - and, of course, excellent local oysters. Don't think they have a folk festival, though" A bit far to go if you're in Whitby, don'cha think? :-) :-) |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: theleveller Date: 27 Jun 08 - 05:37 AM Dave, why would you want to annoy a chip shop owner? Had he served you a duff haddock or been stingy with the scraps? Or perhaps you had been visting a hostelry or two in that excellent market town and thought it would be a bit of a jape. Or was it that you'd just had a curry and were feeling the effects? :) |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: ThreeSheds Date: 27 Jun 08 - 05:32 AM You should have quietened those irritating little bells |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 27 Jun 08 - 05:24 AM Oh - and if you can get a few people together you can really annoy any fish and chip place owner. Dance in singing, to the Hare Krishna tune, "Harry Ramsdens, Harry Ramsdens, Ramsdens Ramsdens, Harry Harry..." I wonder if we are the only people ever to be banned out of a chippy in Skipton? :D |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: GUEST,buspassed Date: 27 Jun 08 - 05:00 AM You're all wrong! The only place to eat fish is 'Greens' We prefer the brasserie downstairs but their more formal upstairs is just as good. Certainly not cheap but the best in Whitby. All the other places are chippies [but good chippies!] |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Wyrd Sister Date: 27 Jun 08 - 04:47 AM Hadleys. Then the place near the bandstand good enough if you're at the wrong end and don't have time to nip across. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: theleveller Date: 27 Jun 08 - 04:26 AM "And where alse can you get an excelent Chablis with your haddock?" The Oysterage at Orford in Suffolk - and, of course, excellent local oysters. Don't think they have a folk festival, though. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 27 Jun 08 - 04:18 AM The Magpie have a take away now so you can get the same stuff without waiting to sit down. If you get chance to eat in the cafe though it is worth it. Although I agree that they may not be the best fish and chips, they are still very good and the cafe is great. And where alse can you get an excelent Chablis with your haddock? :-) Cheers Dave |

Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: GUEST,Betsy at work Date: 27 Jun 08 - 03:58 AM Also remember and beware that the coming so-called Summer months are upon us, and these establishments really do have to work hard on their chips as , generally, only new potatoes are available and they don't fry/go brown in the same way as old potatoes. They can be quite pale but they're absolutely fine to eat. If eaten in paper, also ask for a few scraps - they add (apart from calories )something to the taste of the new potatoes. Cheers Betsy |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: gnomad Date: 26 Jun 08 - 06:44 PM That would be Baxtergate, Steve. Flowergate is the one that slopes up past the Elsinore and the Little Angel, but no chippies. You will find it hard to get hold of poor F&C here, and each establishment has its fans. It partly depends on how you like the dish cooked (how brown, how thick the batter, how crispy or soft the chips) and whether you seek the sedentary or ambulant eating experience. How far you wish to walk can also be a factor. If it were on my side of the bridge I would visit Siggy's more often, but I have to ignore at least 3 decent places to reach it so I don't. For a sit down you can do well in some of the pubs, as well as in the more obvious places. |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: GUEST,Chris Date: 26 Jun 08 - 06:39 PM Roll on Folk Week! |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Steve Gardham Date: 26 Jun 08 - 06:26 PM If you win the lottery the poached haddock in Trenchers is mind blowing. The haddock in the Royal is as good as anywhere if you're eatin outa the paper, Flowergate away from the bridge end I think. SteveG |
Subject: RE: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Betsy Date: 26 Jun 08 - 06:18 PM Lowden Jameswright is referring to the "Magpie" - good - but ridiculously overpriced and a bit of a status symbol.Generally it's difficult to get bad Fish and chips. For a sit down meal - go south over the bridge on the right handside , 80/100 yds, as the corner turns right, and you're stood outside it can't remember the name . |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Lowden Jameswright Date: 26 Jun 08 - 06:10 PM Spot on Banjo-Flower; and then there's always Hadley's |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Banjo-Flower Date: 26 Jun 08 - 05:57 PM "Mr Chips" just over the bridge and round the corner on the left hand side going towards the "Middle Earth".The worst thing about it is the name (sounds like a burger bar) try there and I think you'll agree Gerry |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Fish and chips in Whitby From: Lowden Jameswright Date: 26 Jun 08 - 05:28 PM Certainly not that plaice where everybody queues because there's a long queue - classic case of "Emperor's New Clothes" that one! |
