Subject: RE: BS: Weather 2009 From: maeve Date: 05 Aug 09 - 09:32 PM Good one, gnu. Tell you what we'll do: you design the skeeter windpower system and I'll invite a couple of friends (specifically a Scotsman, and an Englishwoman, to visit us again. One glance at those enticing Brits will call in the little zippies so I can buckle a harness and leash onto each skeeter. I particularly like the notion of time on my hands. m |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather 2009 From: gnu Date: 05 Aug 09 - 06:01 PM Yes, m! I forgot about the river. How nice! Now, if you could just devise a device to capture and harness the windpower of the wings of the skeeters, you could generate enough electricity to power a pump to tap into the water resources near the river and provide irrigation for the crops and cooling for the houses. And, you would have so much more time on your hands rather than skeeter guts from smacking the little b... b... b... bugs. |

Of course, the August moon is tonight and our heat and humidty will wane starting tonight, but it's a crap shoot on heat waves for the rest of the summer and fall... sigh... |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather 2009 From: gnu Date: 02 Aug 09 - 03:08 PM Ya know that there Coppertone sunscreen lotion what's "waterproof"? It might be, but the water from inside a me just messes it up. At least the skeeters can't fly in the hot sun today. |

Any day without precipitation is marvellous on Whidbey Island in the Puget Sound, Washington. Over 70F and we complain about the heat. A foot of snow last winter and I was snowed in for 3 days, muttering in disgust, "I was NEVER snowed in for 3 days in Ontario!!!!" |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather 2009 From: Janie Date: 23 May 09 - 11:03 PM All North Carolina counties have been moved out of drought status, though a number are still classified as abnormally dry. Water tables are still not fully replenished, Though March and April were not as wet as we might like, they were a big improvement over the last 3-4 years. The first two weeks of May provided some decent rain in these parts, and other than one hot snap with temps in the upper 80's to 90F, we are having quite a moderate May. Last week, highs stayed in the low to mid 70's, and this week, and it looks like next week, highs are likely to stay down in the low 80's. Chance of showers, but iffy. Over all, temps have been moderate this spring, and rain fall adequate, but only adequate. |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather 2009 From: Ebbie Date: 23 May 09 - 08:44 PM Ninety degrees? Gulp We are having a normal springtime/summer. For a change. The last two summers have not been good. Especially last summer, when it stayed chilly and wet. So far we've had a great year. Lots of snow when snow was seasonal and now Juneau is following the pattern we are most familiar with: from mid-April to the end of June we having lots of sunshine and fresh breezes. Temperatures range up to the upper 60s. Absolutely lovely. |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather 2009 From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 22 May 09 - 04:43 PM Poem 128 of 230: SKY VIEWS - AUTUMN 2000 From a council-flat in Bury, Through a wide window, I see - Landing on neighbouring tiles - Some starlings, pied wagtails, The hop of magpie and sparrow; And hear geese bark as they go. A fancier's pigeons circle, While a white flock of gull Play the wind in a dark grey sky - The contrast catching my eye; As does the arc of a rainbow - With sun and rain toe-to-toe. Quiet thought turns to Constables, As the wide-glass enables Broad views of strong cumulus sky - Changing shape as time goes by; And - with moors, too, in the background - It's nice to briefly lounge round. Subject: RE: BS: Weather 2009 From: Ebbie Date: 09 May 09 - 04:29 PM In summertime (as now, relatively speaking) Juneau exchanges its snowblowers and dulmp trucks for the ubiquitous street cleaner vehicle. Not as noisy as a snowblower grinding a frozen berm to the pavement and quicker to pass by but the sound travels a fair distance. We are in the throes of tourist season here. Great hulking crluiseships loom outside my windows. |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather 2009 From: Ebbie Date: 10 Jan 09 - 11:22 AM A commercial building that my apartment overlooks has a frozen waterfall hanging from just below its flat roof and hugging the wall. It must be 10 or 12 feet wide. When I first saw it, I thought that the building was simply lacking in insulation but the ice kept/keeps getting thicker and more impressive. These are not icicles but huge, dense excrusences (sp?). I stopped in at one of the shops the other day and asked the owner if she had noticed the ice. She blew me off, so I imagine they know. When the weather turns warm they are going to notice it. For sure. |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather 2009 From: Arnie Date: 10 Jan 09 - 06:44 AM It's been the coldest January for a decade here in the UK and today the temperature on the south coast is still only -3c mid-morning. However, the good news is that we're going to get a hot summer this year. Although I have a feeling that's what the weather people said last year and it rained almost every day! |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather 2009 From: JohnInKansas Date: 10 Jan 09 - 06:30 AM The report is that Madrid, where the last snow was in February 2003, was predicted to get about 4 inches in the current day, after several days of lighter fluff. A municipal emergency has been declared, there and in nearby cities. Transportation is nonexistent, and the people are huddled in their homes. In Alaska, several days of scheduled competition in International Cross Country Skiing have been cancelled, as the rules of competition say it's unsafe if the temperature isn't above -4F (-20C). Only one day of the scheduled meet remains, and they're hoping for "better weather" but the forecasts aren't good. An outlying Alaskan town reports two weeks of -20F temps (highs). Low temperatures are not unusual there, but normally are only brief "cold snaps." Airplanes (about the only form of transportation) are grounded due to the cold, and they report running low on food and fuel. Several major highways in California have been closed for the last few days due to flooding; and a few mudslides have done damage in Washington state, a mere week or so after Washington was more worried about avalanches. Subject: RE: BS: Weather 2009 From: Ebbie Date: 08 Jan 09 - 11:19 PM I don't know where we stand as far as weather-breaking records go, but in Juneau, Alaska, we've had tons of snow these last two weeks and we go from one Weather Advisory or Warning to another with scarcely a break between. Tonight - again - it is still snowing and we're being warned that we can expect another 12 to 24 inches before tomorrow evening. It's very pretty, the air is wonderful and the mountains are marvelous to see. And since the high winds they have threatened us with have not materialized, it's also not that cold; those are the good aspects of it. We're registering just slightly above zero degrees F, ranging from minus 2 or 4 to up to 13 degrees above zero. When the wind does blow it is brutal, of course. In the back of my mind is the nagging thought that if it warms up and starts raining into these billows and berms of snow, it's gonna be a MESS. |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather 2009 From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 08 Jan 09 - 05:18 PM here in sunny summery Sydney it's another cooler day, around 21C where I am & 24C out west, 54% humidity, similar to yesterday. Previous days have been very hot (mid 30s) & humid (in the 70s). Recent temperatures 21-23C, previous days 35C here near the harbour & beaches, & 41C out west where majority of Sydney's population lives. It was so hot on Monday when friends took their grandchildren to an animal park (41 in the open air!) that they didn't stay & instead went home to their suburb where the 41C could be survived in air-conditioned comfort. Same day I was sweltering in 31C temperatures under my fan after buying groceries in air-conditned shopping centre travelling in air-conditioned buses & scurrying around hot streets to my slightly cooler place. sandra (100F = around 38C) |
