Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Genie Date: 03 Oct 02 - 07:38 PM Well, David, I kinda dropped the ball. I meant to email a blurb about Charley's visit to Moggie and Henry, Meryle, etc., to have them announce it at the Second Saturday Song Circle (Imagine "Thylvethter The Cat" trying to thay that!), but between my traveling and Charley's I didn't gather all the relevant info in time. You'd have been a welcome addition. But you're right -- maybe it will teach you that it pays to be a Mudcat member! Now you'll just have to make a trip to Portland East to visit Charley. Genie |

Wish I could have been there. I don't do many chanties on my own but love to join in (and throw in a few Irish songs along the way). David |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Genie Date: 29 Sep 02 - 09:43 AM Charley, Yola and Kelly actually were already out on their Harleys when we started. They just stopped in to check us out, I think, and then left again for their usual Sunday afternoon biker outing. Will talked to them a day or two later and they said they said the music they heard was great. You were, of course, a great addition to all of the sessions I attended. And I introduced "Dead Dog Cider" to the San Diego folks today, to their delight. So glad you made it out here. Come back again real soon, y'heah? Genie PS., Who could forget Jonathan's calypso-style tribute to "The New Carissa?" *G* |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Charley Noble Date: 28 Sep 02 - 01:05 PM Saturday morning and everything looks bright and shining on the coast of Maine, well, actually we're some 20 miles up the Kennebec River from the Atlantic coast but we're still coasting. Here's my summary of our Portland-West highlights and for those of you who participated feel free to fill in what I've left out or censored: The Elephant & the Castle with Spinnacker-this is a traditional tavern in Portland's Old Town area, the bar where the friday evening festivities took place was smokey but Spinnaker with the aid of their sound system was able to cut through the smoke and any bar chatter. Spinnacker includes Mary Benson, Tony Sciola, Jonathan Lay and Dan Gicker; their new CD is entitled SPINNACKER: One Fine Day. Their style of singing sea songs ranges from traditional to "twisted Celtic" to Reggai; they were gracious enough to let me lead several songs and to demonstrate how to snap the 5th string of my banjo. I especially liked the closing song led by the barmaids. The Artichoke Music session was held in the back of a fine music store, a large song circle faciltated by Kate Power, and composed of participants of varying levels of expertise and energy, and with reference to Rise Up Singing songbooks or printed handouts. My old friend Barbara of Mudcat delivered me to the gathering. Genie of Mudcat was also there and there may have been other Mudcatters but not obvious among the more than 40 people. This was a great introduction for me, and several folks like Gil and Martin were also at the subsequent music events. I also noted a lovely S.S. Stewart Special Thoroughbred banjo hanging on the wall with a modest price of $1200; it's worth at least $1500. The gathering at Yola's Foster Road was in more of a brunch gathering space with about 12 of us gathered around some tables, with my old music friend Jane from Michigan chauffering me to the event. This was much more of a spontaneous interaction than the event at the Artichoke and more fun for me in terms of being to react more immediately to other folk's songs. We were also surprised when Aaron from the Press Room gathering in NH dropped in for a song or two. We had a lot of fun working up my version of "Dead Dog Cider." The propriators of Yola's took off on their motorcycles in the middle of our session; I rather doubt that it was our music that drove them away but their departure did inspire a few verses from "Black Leather Jacket and Motorcycle Boots-Highway 101." My last gathering has to be my favorite, more of a song party in the back dining room of the Elephant & the Castle with about 12 folks most of whom I'd already met and a few more strong sea music people that I hadn't. Gordy Euler, Jonathan Lay's partner with the traditional sea music duo Shanhaied on the Willamette (2 CD's which I'm looking forward to listening to this afternoon). Gil, Martin, Genie, Jane, my wife Judy, Jonathan, Susan, and others whose names have escaped were all there raising the roof, removing layers of whatever from the ceilings, and driving away the few tourists who were trying to have a quiet cup of oyster stew or fish & chips. A song would start, and within seconds there would be the click and flash of cassette recorders gobbling up the results. "Dead Dog Cider" got the full treatment, including the breakaway "Rise Again chorus." "Wake Up Susianna" provided its own benchmark as a sea shanty for warping the tradition of singing sea shanties. Judy delivered a sea story of the imperatives of commercial fishing, John Campbell's "Keep on Fishing;" I swear I remember someone's fish and chips spewing across the table after one critical line...but you had to be there! That's all I can dredge up for now without resorting to further unpacking, and since I'm joining Brett at the Portsmouth Songs of Sail Festival tomorrow I haven't really got time to do that. Thanks again for all the help and the fine singing! Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Charley Noble Date: 27 Sep 02 - 11:40 PM Judy and I managed to get back from Portland late last night only to find Mudcat all jammed up, running slower than molasses in an ice house. We had a splendid session in the back dining room of the Elephant & the Castle last Tuesday attended by Jonathan, Mary, Gordy, Genie, Gil, Martin and several other fine nautical singers. I'm still too burnt out to describe the festivities in much detail except to say that I was extremely pleased to have provoked this evening. I'm looking forward to listening to Shanghaied on the Wilamette's (Jonathan and Gordy's group) CD's, as soon as I can find them within my luggage. As well as the reggai inspired adaptations of sea shantied by Spinnacker (Jonathan, Mary et al); you haven't heard "Mauie" until you've heard it sone reggai style. I want to thank Genie, Jonathan, Barbara and Mary for all of the valuable networking they did to make my visit so much fun. Charley and his cousin and Barbara joined us at Artichoke Saturday afternoon and were a great addition to the group. Looking forward to Yola's this afternoon. Less structured than the Artichoke jam and probably will be a smaller group, which means we'll get to hear more of Charley's sea chanties. We're going to try to start at 1 PM sharp. Genie |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Barbara Date: 21 Sep 02 - 11:47 AM We waved Charlie and Judy through Sheridan with the checkered flag, since they had to get to Portland, check in and return the car that night, but they did have time to join us for some salmon and corn on the cob and sing a couple tunes. Charlie's been getting mustier and dustier (daytime anyway) in Powell's, I believe, Portland's block long used book store, and last night a few of us assembled at the Elephant and Castle downtown to hear Spinnaker and Charlie. Spinnaker did a version of Bully in the Alley that took it out to Warp 9 -- more Bob Marley than Helen Schneyer -- and bad luck, Charlie! He played only one note on his fifth string and then it parted. (Maybe good luck for the rest of us, though, since one of the band members in Spinnaker was threatening to get out his accordion if Charlie played banjo, on the theory that the evening would be as far in the gutter as it could get at that point, anyway.) He did do some nice a cappella tunes including West Indies. We will meet at Art E. Choke (as Charlie calls it) this afternoon 2pm, and Yola's Roadhouse tomorrow, for anyone wants to meet the Portland East crew. (Charlie's partner Judy is tied up during the day at conferences, but was around last night). Blessings, Barbara |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Genie Date: 15 Sep 02 - 02:54 AM Glad you are coming to Yola's. I'll let them know and we'll spread the word that this is a special jam and chantey singers are encouraged to attend. Since the Friendship House jam is something I can attend any month, and since I would not be able to get there before about 8:00 PM, anyway, I will probably head down to E & C to meet you folks when (if) I get back to Portland on Friday evening. If you want to start singing before Spinnaker shows up, that'd be fine with me. Hope you folks are singing up a storm (figuratively, of course) in San Fran. Genie |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: GUEST,Charley Noble somewhat south Date: 13 Sep 02 - 05:10 PM Genie- Thanks for the update. Yes, I'm definitely planning to make my way to Yola's. I'm less sure about trying to find my way to the Friendship House even if it is close to the Elephant & the Castle; I'll probably stick with E&C and fully expect to be there all too early with no one else there interested in singing or listening. But if some other folks would like to show up early, we could help warm the place up for Spinnacker. Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Genie Date: 11 Sep 02 - 12:23 PM Charley, you are probably not on line a lot while you're enjoying the music in San Francisco, but maybe you'll see this. If you are interested in coming to part of the song session at Friendship House on Friday the 20th, they tend to go from 7:00 to about 9:00 PM. I doubt that the music at E & C starts much before 9:00 (though I'm not sure). Anyway, the 2 locations are only about a mile or two apart, so it would be easy to be at the song circle in the early evening and then head over to where Spinnaker is playing later in the evening. Just thought I'd throw that out FYI. Are you still planning to join us at Yola's on Sunday afternoon? If so, I will put an announcement up at Yola's, that we will be doing a special chantey sing on that Sunday. Rumor has it that the Portland West Chantey group is going to gather while you are in town, but I have not heard a definite where or when. Genie

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Genie Date: 02 Sep 02 - 01:43 PM Charley, the Elephant and Castle is at 429 SW Second Ave. (sounds like SW Washington), and the phone number is 503-222-5698. There is a folk sing-along/jam at Friendly House Neighborhood Center (1816 NW Irving) on Friday the 20th, in addition to the PFS Coffeehouse at Multnomah Friends Meeting House. Of course, that's the same night as the Spinnaker gig at Elephant and Castle. Well, at least you've got options! |
|
Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Charley Noble Date: 02 Sep 02 - 12:24 PM Not really sure where the Elephant & Castle really is; folks all agree that the location is in Old Town (not too large an area as I recall from my last visit) but some say it is SW Second Ave. & Washington and others SW 4th Ave and Morrison or Ankeny or nearby. Probably I can find it, being trained as a geographer. Spinacker hasn't confirmed whether they'll be actually singing that night but they usually do. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Charley Noble Date: 31 Aug 02 - 09:40 AM Things are beginning to fit together now. Looks like we'll be at the Elephant and the Castle on Friday evening on 9/20 and hoping that the Spinnaker gang hoves into view (according to Jonathan there is still some doubt whether they can mobilize a critical mass of singers). Saturday afternoon on 9/21 we'll move over to the Artichoke song circle and Sunday afternoon on 9/22 the Yola's jam. What joy! I usually brng songsheets for the traditional and non-traditional sea songs I sing for those who are interested in viewing the lyrics but most of what I sing in terms of chorus/refrain can be picked up rather quickly. What I sing is unlikely to be that familiar but not to worry. My wife Judy will be tied up much of the time with her on-going national conference downtown of legislative staff people and though she also loves this music she'll probably get to hear very little of it, unless we organize a raid.;~) Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Genie Date: 31 Aug 02 - 12:35 AM Charley, the Elephant and Castle is right downtown, near the Morrison Bridge. I think it's on SW 4th Ave and Morrison or Ankeny or nearby -- and it has an elephant with a castle above the door. Easy to find it in the phone book if someone doesn't give you the exact address beforehand. Looking forward to meeting and singing with you, too. Barbara, I am pretty sure I know you from PFS song circles -- by face, anyway. I think we've "talked" by email, too. I was out of town the weekend of the overnighter at your house. Glad you're calling Mary. I have her number but didn't want to give it out without permission, and I haven't got around to calling her myself. Barbara, where are you performing on the 7th? Is that the get-together with Francy that you're talking about? Let me know when you folks are gonna sing with Charlie and Judy, and where (Sheridan?), and I'll be glad to come if I'm free. Charley, let me know what some of your favorite chanteys are, and I can run through a few of them at Artichoke before the 22nd. Genie |

Francy wants to come here and make music with us, I think. (Frank of Toledo). Other Portland/NW Oregon people are welcome, and I'll put a call in to Mary Benson, another part of Spinnaker and chanty singer, and see if she's got anything up. K? Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Charley Noble Date: 30 Aug 02 - 06:07 PM Genie, you've really been a lot of help and I look forward to singing with you. Kate and Steve from Artichoke Music got back to me and confirmed that their gig at the Mothership is in an alternative universe to Portland West, and I get this vision of them climbing up this long rope ladder to some hovering interstellar folk opera house. Jonathan Lay of Shanghaied finally resurfaced to tell me that he and his other gang Spinacker are performing at the Elephant and Castle pub on Friday 9/20 from 7 to 11. Sigh, wonder where that is? Feel free to chime in with other tantalizng clues to the GREAT PORTLAND WEST FOLK MUSIC SCAVENGER HUNT. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Charley Noble Date: 30 Aug 02 - 09:52 AM Just left a message with Kate and Steve at Artichoke Music trying to clarify what's happening at their music store for music the weekend of 9/21 and 9/22. I know there's an open song circle beginning at 2 which I plan to attend but so far I'm not sure if anything is happening the evenings of Friday, Saturday or Sunday. From the PFS website there would seem to be a 3rd Friday coffeehouse happening at the Multnomah Friends Meeting House but no clue who the featured performers might be, and I'm never convinced that website info is correct. Could someone please confirm by calling Jack Bohl at 282-1327? Hate to be a pest but I have this lingering memory of walking the streets of Cairns in OZ last December looking for a gathering at tavern which had changed its name and after I finally located it being informed that the folk club had moved up their 3rd Friday event to the 2nd Friday and had had a great time. Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Charley Noble Date: 28 Aug 02 - 10:01 AM Genie- Sure! Let's gather as well at Yola Foster's Road Cofeehouse on Sunday 9/22, 1-4 pm. Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Genie Date: 27 Aug 02 - 12:17 PM Hi, Charley. I emailed this info to you, but I'll post most of it here, for the benefit of other interested parties. "Rebecca's" is the living room of Rebecca, who will begin hosting the Portland Folklore Society song circle on Monday evenings (7:30 to about 10:30PM) again after Labor Day. I think the PFS website has her address, but I can email or PM it to anyone interested. I am not sure about the 3rd Friday Coffeehouse unless it's the one sponsored by PFS. I will call Moggy and Henry to find out more details. There is a Friday night song circle/jam at Friendly House Neighborhood Center once a month, and I think it's on the 3rd Friday. Let me check that out, too.
"Yola's" is Yola's Foster Road Coffeehouse, on the SE corner of 65th and SE Foster Road (503-774-4516). Since last summer, a few of us diehard pickers and singers have been congregating there to pick and sing. Very informal. Sometimes we've had five or six of us there, sometimes it's just two or three. I think when you do the jam every week, folks may make less of a commitment to being there each time. (Kinda like with Artichoke, which is much more established as a folk music venue -- sometimes we have 25 people, sometimes about 6 or 7.* But Yola's has only been open about 18 months. ) Genie

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Charley Noble Date: 27 Aug 02 - 10:10 AM Now Genie mentioned a place called Rebecca's that has some kind of a song circle on Monday evenings. Anyone have a clue where that might be? And does anyone know whether the 3rd friday Coffeehouse series at the Multnomah Friends Meeting House is happening 9/20 and who might be the featured singers? And where does Yola's Sunday afternoon jam take place? I have this disquiting image of wandering banjo in hand the streets of Portland West politely inquiring "Yola, Yola" to various strangers who then drop their eyes and hurry away... Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Charley Noble Date: 25 Aug 02 - 11:44 AM Let me summarize what I know now about when and where I might sing or have a good time listening to others sing:3rd Friday Coffeehouse on 9/20 which may or may not have an "open" set; Friday 9/20 Artichoke Music Concert by ?(clear conflict); Saturday 9/21 open jam from 2-4 at Artichoke Music; Wednesday, PFS open-Mike at Star-E Rose Caf at unknown location and unknown time. Looks like Sunday 9/22 could be dull and boring; maybe that would be a good time for Jon and Gordy to pull together their Shanghaied Shanty Party. I'll be coming into town late Thursday 9/19 and flying out Thursday 9/26. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Uncle Jaque Date: 25 Aug 02 - 02:17 AM Well, Genie - "Sniffing out" those Chanty Sings out there should be safe enough by now, with all that tear-gas having dissipated we suppose.
Having grown up in the '60's in the mountains of Northern NH, we kind of missed out on all of those spirited protestations going on at the time. This Spring we decided to make up for lost time and participated in a "Tax Freedom Day" protest demonstration under the Victory Monument in Portland, Maine. We got there a bit late, it was raining, and there were about a dozen of us there. The magic-marker I'd made my protest sign out of promptly ran all over the place, making my sign look like tie-dyed piece of impressionistic art, and a rather crude one at that. Our ringleader was dressed up like a money-eating donkey (that was kind of funny), and despite my fife renditions of "Rally 'Round the Flag", "Battle Hymn of the Republic" etc. calculated to stir up an impassioned mob, the good folk of Portland for the most part just politely ignored us. So we shrugged our shoulders, had a good laugh with each other, and went home.
It looks like you had a lot more fun - exitement anyway - in Portland West last week!
Really, despite any idealogical differences we might have, I'm glad to hear from an apparently undented and undaunted Charlie having a grand time with some wonderful people and participating, no doubt, in the sharing of some "Joyfull Noise" out there. We'll look forward to hearing about it at another one of our "Portland East" Chanty-Hoots. Gosh - ain't we about due for one?

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Genie Date: 25 Aug 02 - 12:00 AM Charley, I believe there are some chantey sings that go on around here, and I'm in the process of sniffing them out. If you are interested in doing a house concert, it's not out of the question that we could set something up for you while you're here. Meryle Korn, of PFS, said she'd have liked to have you in one of their showcases if she'd known about your visit earlier, but there are other possibilities. Jams will probably be easier to set up, and we'll make sure you know where and when the regular ones are, in addition to any non-scheduled ones we can put together. Genie |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Charley Noble Date: 24 Aug 02 - 09:39 PM Nice try, Uncle Jacque! They're not as naive as you thought out in Portland West.;~) I probably will do better with an "open jam" or "song circle" rather than trying to contact a "venue" at this late a date. Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Genie Date: 24 Aug 02 - 01:25 PM Nice trick, Uncle Jaque. Charley hasn't got here yet! We save "welcome processionals" like that for really special guests like Dubya. And the Portland Police, it seems, just don't wanna be outdone by the Seattle Storm Troupers. Genie

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 24 Aug 02 - 01:23 AM Lookey here, Fans; Charlie Noble's vacation pictures are in from his recent fun and exciting trip to Portland, OR! This is a rather long URL to the image, but see if you can reach it:
http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20020823/capt.1030065062.bush_oregon_orjg105.jpg
Now here's the fun part; Can you find our beloved Charlie in this picture... (Kind of like finding "Waldo", isn't it?)?
We understand that this warm reunion of old friends brought many to tears, and that the little rubber balls given to the group as souveniers by the City of Portland (OR) were a "big hit" with many of the celebrants.
No doubt it was a memorable experience! |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Genie Date: 22 Aug 02 - 10:47 AM Still working on getting that "underground" information for you, Charley (e.g., where the diehard chantey singers congregate informally). I'd be delighted to show you around as much of it as I know (having lived here since 1976). I'll PM you my email. Genie |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Genie Date: 19 Aug 02 - 01:23 PM Vancouver has a pub called Pene Azul!? BTW, Charley, two of the Portland folks I mentioned who love sea chanties and other traditional music are pictured with Mark Cohen in the Mudcat Member Photos section. "Typical Mudcat fare" fits right in with most of the jams and song circles in Portland. We even let banjo pickers in. ;-) |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Charley Noble Date: 19 Aug 02 - 10:02 AM Jon- Sure, we'd love to visit Vancouver some other year; it's on our "must-see" list. Be nice to nose around the trail of C. Fox Smith. Is there still a pub called the Blue Peter? Genie- I do focus on sea music, traditional as well as parodies of such. I also do trditional drinking songs, Southern Appalachian ballads, a song or two from Australia, and a few songs inspired by strange stories that appear in the newspaper. Typical Mudcat fare, I'm afraid. I'll be bringing my venerable S.S. Stewart 5-string banjo as well. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Genie Date: 19 Aug 02 - 02:49 AM Charley, I'll pass that website address along to Kate and Steve at Artichoke and to a few other Portland, OR, folkies. Although most of the jams and song circles I know of are more eclectic-- not limited to chanteys and traditional music--, there really are a lof of folks here for whom those songs are their passion. (I'd include myself in that group. It's not that I don't love chanteys and trad. music; it's that I do love all kinds of music.) Please keep me posted as to where you will be (public venues) while you are in town. Genie |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Charley Noble Date: 18 Aug 02 - 06:00 PM Genie-I'll pass your information over to Jonathan and Gordy of Shanghaied and see what they think is best. My other local music contact is an old Michigan friend Jane Wilcox. You could also check out the website of my sea shanty group Roll & Go. Cheerily, Charley Noble:www.rollandgoseasongs.com |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Genie Date: 17 Aug 02 - 03:41 AM Charley, I'm delighted that you folks will be visiting The Rose City -- and while I'm in town, to boot! There are several ongoing jams and song circles (2nd and 3rd Saturdays and every Monday night) but none I know of that are specifically geared to sea chanties. (If you're at one of the jams and I can be there, we can steer the jam toward chanteys, etc. The song selections depend on who shows up.) On the other hand, there are quite a few members of PFS (e.g., Mary Benson and David Ingersoll) who are very much into that genre. PM me your email address and I'll give you some names of folks to contact for more suggestions. You really should let Kate Power and Steve Eichorn, the proprietors of Artichoke Music, know that you are coming. They host an open jam every Saturday from 2-4PM and also showcase various artists on Friday nights (some as "surprise guests"). In any event, Artichoke would be a good place to drop by. Wed., Sept. 25, I'm pretty sure, is the PFS Open Mike, at the Star-E Rose CafŽ (Pub?). Anyway, I, for one, would love to meet you and hear your music, as would several of my music buddies. Amergin also lives nearby, and he might come to Portland on Sunday the 22nd for a jam that some of us do on Sunday afternoons. Meanwhile, I'll scout around among the Portland folkies for the sea chantey afficcionados. Genie |

Subject: RE: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Mark Cohen Date: 17 Aug 02 - 01:38 AM Charley, if you don't hear from Genie or one of the other Portland folks, check out the Portland Folklore Society's webpage. Call Moggy Vanderkin, who's the president, and ask her. She sings shanties and traditional songs. (And tell her I sent you.) Have a wonderful time! Aloha, Mark |

Subject: Charley Noble:Portland E.to Portland W. From: Charley Noble Date: 15 Aug 02 - 06:01 PM We'll be driving into Portland, Oregon, Wednesday, 9/18, looking for gatherings where folks swap sea music and other traditional/contemporary songs. I've already been in contact with Jonathan and Gordy of the sea music group Shanghaied, and some other old music friends. The weekend of 9/22 or 9/23 might be the best time for a song party. We'll be staying downtown where my wife is committed to attending workshops at a national conference but I'm quite free to nose around. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We'll be leaving Portland 9/26. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
