Subject: RE: Tech: New Dell-Problem with Adobe From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 22 Jan 06 - 05:40 PM "XP pro/home network I got working but then found the home had some 5 connection limit thing and can't use a domain... " That's news to me - never seen THAT one mentioned in the marketing blurbs (or on the box!) - sounds like the old 'cripple-ware' to me... |

Subject: RE: Tech: New Dell-Problem with Adobe From: JohnInKansas Date: 22 Jan 06 - 10:25 AM whb - If you don't use OE, I'd expect McAfee to put the fix on with your regular updates. They should include it but may not rush it through. The problem apparently was discovered quite recently when a few people reported that their Inbox disappeared. If you use hotmail, maybe that's just super efficient SPAM blocking. John |

Subject: RE: Tech: New Dell-Problem with Adobe From: wilbyhillbilly Date: 22 Jan 06 - 09:42 AM Thanks JohnInKansas, I have OE on here but don't use it, however I went and looked and it seems to be working OK at the moment. whb |

Subject: RE: Tech: New Dell-Problem with Adobe From: GUEST Date: 21 Jan 06 - 08:14 PM If you can afford it, also upgrade that new computer to XP Professional. It's a much more robust version of the program. Yes SRS, reward Bill Gate$ for shortcomings in his programs. Came accross one the other day helping someone else out. That was XP pro/home network I got working but then found the home had some 5 connection limit thing and can't use a domain... Sorted as not all connections were needed but that person would happily of payed M$ to overcome restrictions I wouldn't even hit using free Samba to do the job on a free Linux installation Why is it with so many people that the more they are conned and ripped off being told "well you know it all relly comes down to money", the happier they are? |

Subject: RE: Tech: New Dell-Problem with Adobe From: JohnInKansas Date: 19 Jan 06 - 06:05 PM whb - A bit off the subject, but since you mentioned using McAfee: a very recent Microsoft KB article, 321505 Outlook Express e-mail messages are missing from the Inbox folder (Jan 04, 2006) indicates that McAfee may cause corruption in Outlook Express email folders. No significance if you're not also using OE, and I think you've said you don't(?), but if it applies, McAfee supposedly has a fix you can download. John |

Subject: RE: Tech: New Dell-Problem with Adobe From: GUEST,DB Date: 19 Jan 06 - 08:49 AM I've posted this tip before - but people may still find it useful: Go to the 'Help' menu and fumble around until you find the 'Detect and Repair' option - this often works. This must be a first - a 'Help' menu that actually contains something helpful! Apart from that Adobe Acrobat Reader is crap - but I don't suppose that you can expect a lot of something that is free. |

Subject: RE: Tech: New Dell-Problem with Adobe From: MartinRyan Date: 18 Jan 06 - 03:26 PM I also downloaded the Foxit program, having been driven demented by Acrobat Readers prolixity - seems very good. Regards |

Subject: RE: Tech: New Dell-Problem with Adobe From: wilbyhillbilly Date: 18 Jan 06 - 01:52 PM Thanks everyone, I deleted the Adobe I had and downloaded the latest version which now seems to do the job. I also went and got the Foxit one (thanks Bill D) which works exceptionally well on download pdfs. Well hopefully now I can try and settle down with this new Dell and get back to some semblance of normality :-) whb |

Subject: RE: Tech: New Dell-Problem with Adobe From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 Jan 06 - 12:14 PM I deleted a paragraph about that annoying Adobe insistence that I update their new files. I didn't want to distract from the subject at hand. SRS |

Subject: RE: Tech: New Dell-Problem with Adobe From: Bill D Date: 18 Jan 06 - 11:34 AM and no matter what you finally do with Adobe, I recommend having FoxitPDF reader on your machine. I have it set to be my default PDF reader, and only use Adobe for rare unusual files. Foxit will open 'most' standard PDF fast and clean, as it does not need to load all the exotic baggage Adobe loads by default. ...and it does not ask you to do those %%$#@**&^ updates,...*grin* |

Subject: RE: Tech: New Dell-Problem with Adobe From: JohnInKansas Date: 18 Jan 06 - 11:14 AM An "almost annoying" feature of my Adobe Reader is that nearly every time I open a .pdf file (especially from the web) I'm asked if I want to check for Reader updates. Occasionally I have allowed it to run the check, and invariably it tells me it's added something new - and the $%#@* thing slows down even more. (Note that you need to be able to recognize the "real Adobe" query to distinguish it from a fake popup you might(?) get from a malicious site. The most common places where I get a prompt are at .gov sites, since they seem to use "bizarre features" that might trigger the check for uncommonly used things.) I assume that it does the same for everyone, although my Reader is a component of the full program (create, edit, and read) that we had to get for business purposes. Occasionally going back to the source probably is a good idea. If there is a conflict with AV or other "protection" programs, you should get a prompt to tell you that something's being blocked, although with some programs you can turn off the notification feature(s). Your AV (even McAfee) should have a log that will let you see if it remembers doing anything. John |

Subject: RE: Tech: New Dell-Problem with Adobe From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 Jan 06 - 10:56 AM If you can afford it, also upgrade that new computer to XP Professional. It's a much more robust version of the program. Like John said, you may need to install a fresh copy of the program. Did your version come with the machine? You may want to first visit Adobe.com and see about updating the extant program before doing an uninstall/reinstall operation. SRS |

Subject: RE: Tech: New Dell-Problem with Adobe From: JohnInKansas Date: 18 Jan 06 - 06:57 AM whb - I've noted that since getting the latest updates on the PDF Reader from Adobe, when a .pdf download finishes it's ofter rather slow about displaying it on screen. It seems the system has to think for a while to get it displayed. This does depend on how the site saved the file. I much prefer the ones that do a progressive display as the file downloads, but I've run into quite a few recently that just show a blank screen until a while after the download finishes. I'm assuming your problem is with .pdf files from the web, and not with opening .pdf files stored on your own machine. If that's the case, you can work around it by right-clicking links and "Save Target" to get the .pdf files on your machine, then just double-click the saved file to open it in Reader. Opening from my own hard drive usually is pretty prompt. (Note though that not all web sites allow you to save that way. Some few sites block right-click functions.) I you're having trouble loading .pdf files saved on your own drive, I'd suggest going direct to Adobe and getting a fresh copy of the latest Reader. John |

Subject: Tech: New Dell-Problem with Adobe From: wilbyhillbilly Date: 18 Jan 06 - 05:02 AM My new Dell running WinXP Home does not seem to open any pdf files. Never had a problem before on the old machine running exactly the same program (WinXP Home). The only difference is that this machine has Mcafee protection and the other had EZ-Trust. Could it be something to do with it. HELP!!!!!!!!! whb |
