Subject: RE: BS: Happy Samhian From: greg stephens Date: 31 Oct 03 - 12:51 PM catsphiddle: as i just love being pedantic, i thank you for your wishes, but cant help feeling that if we're really strict about this, samhain is really best considered as November 1, nd doesnt actually start till midnight tonight. Though of course, all things "Celtic" do tend to be a little on the vague side. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Samhian From: Micca Date: 31 Oct 03 - 01:12 PM Greg, not quite right, as I understand it the "Celtic" day ran from sunset to sunset, so "Samhain" is from about 1635 today (31 October) to 1630 Tomorrow |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Samhain From: katlaughing Date: 31 Oct 03 - 04:02 PM Merry Samhain to you, too, Khatt and the rest of you. Thanks, Khatt, for starting this. I thought this was interesting in view of the actual dates. I found it was www.witchvox.com (thanks, Micca!): November 8th will be what is called the Harmonic Concordance. This means, that 6 planets will be in an alignment and make the Star of David, or Seal of Solomon, pattern. Also, there will be a lunar eclipse. This day is the Full Moon of Scorpio(in which many Pagans actually celebrate Samhain on this day). The veil this day will be it's thinnest in many many many years. Also, some astrologers think that this is the day when the Mayan Calendar ends, thus a new age begining. And, now, just for fun a kids' party quiz from an old treasure of a book, Halloween by Robert Haven Schauffler, published in 1933. The answers are at the bottom: 1. Of what should Hallowe'en (sic) candlesticks be made? 2. When a witch goes to school what does she do best? 3. What relatives are always present at a Hallowe'en party? 4. Who takes charge of the lights on Hallowe'en? 5. If a witch could change herself into something to eat, what woudl it be? 1. Broomsticks 2. Spells 3. Pumpkin 4. Jack O'Lantern 5. Sandwich |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Samhain From: open mike Date: 31 Oct 03 - 09:54 PM I will be celebrating in the style of the mexican day of the dead. Nov. 2 this year i believe. http://www.mexconnect.com/mex_/feature/daydeadindex.html http://www.public.iastate.edu/~rjsalvad/scmfaq/muertos.html and i will be joined by many women as we celebrate the 21st annual women's gathering on t4eh first weekend of Nov. also I will have ashes of both of my parents here to remember them. also i have found a recipe for making candy and a mold which shapes it into skulls.....one of the mexican info links above tells about bread of the dead which you make into bone shapes, and sugar skulls are often found in mexican celebrations; I remember one show on Northern Exposure t.v. show where in the north west there was a celebration that had many skeletons and crows or ravens....any one know about this tradition? is it at the same time of year?? |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Samhain From: LadyJean Date: 31 Oct 03 - 11:42 PM Did you hear about the Roman Catholic, the Southern Baptist, the Presbyterian and the Pagan who camped together at the S.C.A.s annual Pensic War? We had a very nice time together. I'm the Presbyterian. But as I have told my pagan friend, there is no rest for the wiccan. |
