Coolidge saw what was coming and refused to run again. Hoover was very good at rebuilding Europe after WW 1, but he gets no credit for that. FDR had some respect for him; during his administration he ordered that the new Boulder Dam be named Hoover Dam. How many republicans would do that for a Democrat? |

Most teachers don't care about those numbers one bit and most teachers don't even think the test is at all reliable... At least that's the way it was when I was a teacher (2 years - 5/6 combination, 2 years - jailhouse GED, 1 year - H.S. American History)... Hoover might have been bright but his biggest problem is that he didn't understand basic economics... B~ |

Not so's anyone much noticed. At least until Roosevelt got in and his "alphabet agencies," like the WPA and the CCC, kicked in and put people (25% unemployment) back to work. Roosevelt figured that the way to get the economy running again was to put people to work and earning wages. That would get money circulating again because, unlike the wealthy who were sitting on their riches, they would have to spend it—on things like food and rent. At the same time, they would be building bridges, highways, and other infrastructure that the country needed. It worked. The Right Wing has hated Roosevelt's guts ever since. Yes, a the darling of Liberals. Hoover followed the new whiz kid's advice and started huge Fedral projects and Federal spending. Called "pump priming" at the time. He also raised the Federal income tax maximum from 35% to 63%! Roosevelt kept doing the same things when he took over and got the same results: the economy got worse. We got out of the Depression due to the bombs dropped on Pearl. |
