Subject: BS: Are Men Really Bozo'z???... From: Bobert Date: 25 Feb 06 - 05:42 PM Well gol danged... This mornin' I figured that I oughtta stick around with the P-Vine 'cause she's got a head cold and so I was laying in bed, sippin' coffeee and watching TV with her... I don't see alot of TV so I was kinda surprised to see one commercial after another where men were portrayed as complete morons??? One guy fell over his lawnmower. Another crashed his car thru the garage door and a third knocked over a lit BBQ grill and caught part of the lawn on fire??? Then there yet another who got a broom on fire by trying to do put out a grease fire on the stove!!! Yeah, I knew we were some purdy danged messed up folks but is we really the bozo's that TV makes us out to be??? Bobert |

And have you had any of those accidents? If you have (and I bet there's a BBQ story in there somewhere) then I think you've answered your own question!! LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Are Men Really Bozo'z???... From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 25 Feb 06 - 05:59 PM It's not that men are bozos, Bobert, it's that portraying women doing stupid shit is often seen as reinforcing old sterotypes. If a woman drives a car through the garage door she's a "typical dumb blonde woman driver". If a man does it he's an idiot, but there's no implicit statement about men in general. |

Well, okay, I was driving a big truck once and didn't see that gargae door hadn't opened all the way and I broke the lower panel... Yeah, LH, I don't watch much TV other than the news and an occaional football game.... Okay, I watch "Survivor"... The CD, John, is real close... I should have an announcement thread of the release date with in a week or two... Sorry, daylia, but the sound was off and I wasn't really paying attention to the products... |

Subject: RE: BS: Are Men Really Bozo'z???... From: GUEST Date: 25 Feb 06 - 08:03 PM Same in the Uk Bobert. Apparantly we're just lazy bozos who let the little woman open an internet bank account for us because we're too dumb and old fashioned to latch on to the new ways. Just wait till that washer on the sink goes though! And she still can't park the car!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Are Men Really Bozo'z???... From: Cluin Date: 25 Feb 06 - 08:21 PM Watch a few episodes of "Reba". Every male in that show is an idiot. On second thought, so are most of the females (except for Reba and her smart-mouth daughter). My girlfriend makes me watch "Reba" and "American/Canadian Idol" sometimes. Yeah, I've got issues. Big whoop! Wanna fight about it? |

Subject: RE: BS: Are Men Really Bozo'z???... From: Once Famous Date: 25 Feb 06 - 08:24 PM bobert, I have to say I have noticed this trend in advertising for some time. Men are portrayed often as bumbling oafs and doofusses. I don't like it and I come away with a negative feeling of what was just being advertised. I also believe that for the most part men do not get portrayed enough in a caring parent role. |

Subject: RE: BS: Are Men Really Bozo'z???... From: Tweed Date: 25 Feb 06 - 09:49 PM Well of course we are Bozo'z!! I, like many Mudcat men, disguise myself as a standardized human being during the daylight hours, but when night time rolls around I am quick to put on an orange wig, size 36 wingtips and a big red nose before going out on the town. I find there is nothing turns a big legged woman on more than a rubber bulbed horn honked repeatedly in her ear. Works every time!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Are Men Really Bozo'z???... From: Cluin Date: 25 Feb 06 - 09:52 PM Reba's the one I wanted to see "grab-oided" in Tremors. It's funny how you can have an almost instant unexplainable dislike to someone the first time you see them. |

Subject: RE: BS: Are Men Really Bozo'z???... From: gnu Date: 25 Feb 06 - 09:58 PM Yeeees! I wonder why women don't speak up about it. Enough of them speak up about other things, like nudie mags being demeaning. What could be more demeaning to women than ads which demean the intelligence of men in order to "reach" female viewers? Ye lads step away, now, or suit up. There's gonna be unfriendly fire. |

The TV show "Reba" does portray men as dolts. That's one of the reasons I do not watch it. But, Reba? Damn!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Are Men Really Bozo'z???... From: jacqui.c Date: 25 Feb 06 - 10:53 PM On the subject - a few years ago it was women who were being stereotyped - nice frilly pinny, immaculate house, squeaky clean children. Absolute bollocks as far as a lot of women were concerned. Now the pendulum has swung too far the other way and that offends me as much as the mumsy women did. It is demeaning to women that advertisers think that portraying men as bozoes is going to sell the product to us. I wonder what sort of world the advertising agency gurus live in? They are so damned condescending to the viewer, on the whole. Looks like they really are aiming for the lowest common denominator. Talk about dumbing down! I agree with Martin - I do have a negative image of the products being advertised in that manner. |

Subject: RE: BS: Are Men Really Bozo'z???... From: autolycus Date: 26 Feb 06 - 05:33 AM It's shlemiel, as in A man came home from the steam baths - minus his shirt. "Shlemiel !",cried his wife,"Where's your shirt?" "My shirt? That's right. Where can it be?Aha ! Someone at the baths must have taken it by mistake, instead of his." "So where is HIS shirt?" The shlemiel scratched hid head."The fellow who took my shirt - he forgot to leave his." P.S. The world of advertising is less real than the world of jokes. Ivor |

Subject: RE: BS: Are Men Really Bozo'z???... From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 26 Feb 06 - 08:55 AM If a woman drives a car through the garage door she's a "typical dumb blonde woman driver". If a man does it he's an idiot, but there's no implicit statement about men in general. An interesting distinction. But it doesn't take long and the implicit statement does in fact become "typical dumb bloke". My impressionis that there are in fact a lot of younger people who do in fact buy into that, not just girls either, and it lies at the root of a whole set of things going wrong. |
