While searching the DT and the forum to try to find the source of the variant, supposedly Anglo-Welsh, lyrics that I have for ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT, I made an interesting discovery: although lullabies constitute a healthy fraction of the world's folk songs, there are only 35 listings in the DT under @lullaby and no threads I could find devoted to collecting them. There are a goodly number referred to individually here and there, but no compilation. So I propose to post the lyrics to this version of A.T.T.N. (which is not in the DT), both in the hope that someone knows the source, and to stimulate a round of baby-soothing additions to the database. Here goes:

Well, Shula, as soon as you posted your message, I went searching the database for my two favorite Bok-Muir-Trickett lullabies, "YEA HO, LITTLE FISH" and "John of Dreams." They're both beautiful, and they're both in the database - but not categorized as lullabies. I'll have to put my thinking cap on and come up with another.

But in the meantime, I want to voice a complaint about "All Through the Night." I love the version you posted, Shula. Our choir director makes us sing a different version at Christmas, though, and I gag every time we get to the line that goes, "Christmas time is so appealing, All through the night." I'd quote the whole awful thing, but maybe it's lucky for you that I can't find it just now. It's truly tacky.

Here's one of my favorites, from an old '60s folk collection record I check out from a library some years ago and already submitted to DT:

"Peedie" is the Orkney equivalent of "wee", apparently.

The most effective sleep-inducer I know is "On Top of Old Smoky". (Though some might think the lyrics unsuitable for children.) This is not a comparison, by the way--I don't know any of the other songs people have mentioned except for the beautiful "All Through the Night".

Lost track of this thread for awhile, but had to find it to tell you that "Sleepy Peedie Laddie" is the most touching father-to-son lullabye I have ever heard. It certainly gives the lie to the idea that back in the days when "men were men" manliness required the suppression of deep feeling. But then I was reared on a steady diet o' Bobby Burns, so knew better, m'sel.' In fact, I believe I have heard a variant of this song when little; -- what I wouldn't give to know for sure!

It's not a folk song, but I always thought that the lullaby that ends the Beatles' " White Album" was a nice song, if a little too overproduced in their version. ("Now it's time to say good night . . .")

Shula, thanks for starting this! I love your version of ATTN.

Here's my favorite lullaby, from a Catherine-Ann McPhee CD. The liner notes say it has versions in Skye and Lewis. It tells the sleeping baby that pipes will be played and wine will be drunk and children of the king will be present at his/her wedding. I like to sing the chorus in the original Gaelic, but sing the verses in English. Each verse is about a particular family, so you can add your own - I sing a verse about my mother's family, the Keenans. What makes it a great lullaby is the repetitive rhythm and words (which also make the Gaelic easy to learn).

I think Barges would qualify as a lullabye. It has a beautiful, gently rolling melody, like the Mississippi. It's in the DT. I first encountered this song when my sisters learned it at Campfire Girl camp in Minnesota. They, however, only learned the first two verses. This shortcoming was compensated by the fact that they learned to sing it in two part harmony and in rondo--exceedingly pretty when done this way.

Don't count on the keywords "@" being inclusive. We started keywording late in the process, don't remember all of them at any given time. When other people contribute songs, they do not usually use the keywords and if we are not familiar with a song, we may miss some.

By all means, use the keywords to find songs, but do not assume you have found them all that way. If you like, you can tell us that we are missing certain keywords from certain songs.

Shula, thanks for your comments about Peedie Laddie. Actually the song could be sung by a mom or a dad, but the version I have is sung by two women in harmony - just beautiful. I guess I'll have to MIDI-fy it and send it to Dick. (Sighs as he adds another task to his long list)

My favorite is "The Gartan Mother's Lullaby". Dick, I checked this in the DT and have some corrections for you. First, it is Gartan, not Garton. My sources are Irish Country Songs, collected and arranged by Herbert Hughes, vol.one, 1909, and the album notes from Songs of Ireland by Mary O'Hara, written by Liam Clancy, 1958. Also, Lullaby doesn't have the "e" on the end in this case. In the second line, it sounds like Eeval, but it refers to "Aoibheal", who guards the Grey Rock. I have another source, True Irish Ghost Stories, which refers to her as a banshee rather than just a fairy woman, as Liam Clancy calls her. In the ghost story book, it reads, "The most famous Banshee of ancient times was that attached to the kingly house of O'Brien, Aibhill, who haunted the rock of Graglea above Killaloe, near the old palace of Kincora. In A.D. 1014 was fought the battle of Clontarf, from which the aged king, Brian Boru, knew that he would never come away alive, for the previous night Aibhill had appeared to him to tell him of his impending fate."

This is one of the first songs I sang at the Irish session that I attend. It has a very sweet melody, and is a crowd pleaser.

Note to Dick, since you have asked for sources, whenever possible, add this belated annotation to the "All Through The Night" variant that started this thread. These lyrics are attributed to Florence Hoare in a collection called, I think, Folksongs of The British Isles. Just stumbled on it, yesterday, in our local Bluegrass store. Learned the verses long ago, without notes.

Well, here's another home-grown lullaby. Someday we'll have the knack of sharing tunes easily, as well as words! I may be able to get a midi version if anyone wants to try it. Or I can try some kind of formatted notation, similar to Bert's attempt. The tune's kind of nice.

This was made up (not written) when I was out of town with my 3 or 4 year old son and he couldn't get to sleep in a strange room. I just tried to put together all the pretty, pleasant images I could think of. It worked well on many nights until he started thinking he was too old for such "baby stuff." The order of verses is arbitrary, except for the first verse.

JELLYBEAN LULLABY

If I had a bag of jellybeans,
I would save all the red ones for you
And if I had a visit from the Queen,
I would bring her in to say goodnight to you.

Chorus: And if I had a big soft bed
I'd let you lay down your sleepy little head
And If I had a bag of jellybeans

Shula, The Gartan Mother's Lullaby is not like any other tune. The music is in the Herbert Hughes book I referred to which you can find through a library. I only know of one recording, which is the Mary O'Hara, Songs of Ireland. Alice in MT

Dear Ferrara, there is a format for sharing tunes via text files called ABC. Click Here to get to the ABC homepage. There is some downloadable software and some explanation there. I've only used it a little, but I think it will do the trick. Bert's attempt is more or less ABC. He sent me his tune in a private message, in which it was formatted better, and I was able to figure it out enough to enter it into Noteworthy Composer (a music notation shareware program) and listen to it, and also play it on tin whistle. Anyway, I think ABC notation could be used to transmit tunes in the forum by including it in the message. The recipient could select and copy it to Notepad or other ascii capable word processor and save it as ascii. Then the ABC software could read it and play it for you, also turn it into MIDI, etc.

I love your lyrics and would like to hear the tune.

PS. I've done the hard part of figuring out the tune for "Sleepy Peedie Laddie" and entering it into Noteworthy Composer. Now I need to output it in various formats and bring it from home to work where I can post it or e-mail it to interested parties. I'll try and remember to do that tonight if I have time.

Would you be willing to start a new thread on sharing tunes as well as words, and put in that link so it will be generally available? I know there has been a lot of discussion of how we can share music; I'm hoping we can bring it all together in one place.

I would absolutely love the music to "Sleepy Peedie Laddie."

About lullabies. My son loved all the usual ones, "All the Pretty Little Horses," "Hush Little Baby Don't Say a Word," as well as "Rockabye Sweet Baby James." But one night when I ran out of ideas, he said, 'Sing "Haul 'em Away."' This is a fairly bawdy sea song he had heard at our song circle when he was supposed to be sleeping. We had a friend who was a newborn intensive care nurse. She said that at least one baby in her care would always fall asleep to "Friggin' in the Riggin'".

The version I sent you in a private message was EXACTLY the same cut and paste that I put in the thread. I don't know why they came out different.

It was supposed to be kinda ABC but I have great difficulty with the timing. I don't really know how I sing it myself. It just happens.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could have some buttons out in that unused space to the right here. Just hit on the note and it inserts it into the thread.

Don't tell Max though, I'm sure he's busy enough as it is just trying to earn a living.

Does anyone know where I can find this lullaby? I thought it was the most beautiful lullaby I had ever heard as a child. I too heard this lullaby as a child. - My father sand it to all his 19 grandchildren. It has now been sung through three generations of children - in Australia!!! a far cry from the deep southern American cottonfields and slave singers of yesteryear. Just recently on a Classical Music Station in Sydney, Australia, I heard Paul Robson singing quite a lovely version of this song. I'm sure I could find out details and record numbers if you are interested.

I'm also trying to track down a lullaby, i havve to say i don't remeber anythign about it other than it sounds sort of sad and it has a few lines something like

'whisper to the wind and hum a little tune,'
or maybe 'listen to the wind'
but the listen part could have been 'listen to the loon cry,'

i'm sorry to say i cannot for hte life of me rember it properly, and i'm really trying to find out what it is, i have the tune stuck in my head, and cannot get it out, and i think i'll get it out if i can remeber the name, the songss been stuck in my head for six months, and i'm starting to wonder if i made it up even thoguh i know my music teacher taught it to everyone in my third grade class, i'm only a junior, so it wasn't that long ago.

Trying to find the lyrics to a lyllaby that my mom use to sing to me... that her mom use to sing to her... We called it Blanket Bay but I'm not sure that is the proper name. The chorus is something like:

My mother sang it too. It was a point of perversity for me & my brother to scramble to get our feet out from under the covers during the line "So you can't see his little bare feet" and to insert "and Joey and Jonny" after "Bless Mommy and Daddy".

I also had a personalized audio cassette tape of lullabies (I think it was a mail in gift from huggies or something) and I'm trying to track down any info about it...

Some of the lyrics were:
It's time to go to dreamland once again
and sail beside the rainbow till the end

The whole night through
And welcome the morning sun.

I can't remember much of the rest.

i know what huggies tape you're talking about! i have one with my name in it. i'm trying to find it and remember all the songs.. so far all i remember is

You guys are all talking about the Huggies tape!! I have it!!!! And it still works! I'm 21 and still use it!! :) personalized :) I could probably type up the lyrics and post them but that doesnt do much, I cannot find anything about them...I really want another one cuz mine is getting old and used :(

My grandmother used to sing me to sleep with a lullaby that had these words Tralalalalalala, Would you like the moon to play with? ,or the stars to run away with? Theys acoming ,Don't you cry. It ended with Tralalalalalalalullaby. DOes any one know this?

When I go home for Spring Break I will listen to my CD that my Dad recorded the song from the Huggies tape onto, and try to sit down and type out all the lyrics...Actually, I think the tape has a little booklet with the lyrics, so, if I can read the tiny writing, I will do it that way....Or at least try to...I have a lot of homework, but, I will eventually put the lyrics on here ;)

HUGGIES/PLAYSKOOL LULLABIES:
I had an unfortunate event happen just within the last couple of years. My music player went crazy and ate my tape inside. This tape was the same Huggies/Playskool Lullabies mentioned above, but for me-Jessica. I had been planning on taking it in to get transferred to CDs just to have copies to be safe, but I never got in.

This tape means the world to me. I'm going off to college and yet it still holds some of the clearest and best memories in it. I have been searching for the last two years for this tape in any form with no luck.

If ANYONE can help me, you have no idea how appreciative I would be. I am willing to purchase it from anywhere or purchase a copy of the Jessica version from anyone. I just dearly want that music back.

Aw, Jessica. I wish I could help. I have these tapes for all 3 of my daughters. None of which are named Jessica.
I am in the process of recording them on CD for this very reason.
My youngest used to think it was her Daddy singing on the tape. So sweet.....obviously has never really heard him sing! lol

I ordered that tape for my son nearly 23 years ago! I have the cover, but the tape went missing. I loved it. His name is Coy, and I remember the singer whispered his name..."Coo-oyyy. COOYYYYEEE..." He fell asleep to it every night! The tape was make by Playskool if I remember correctly, offered with the diaper proofs-of-purchase. I have wanted to replace it, and also order more to give as gifts, but I'm sure they no longer make them (per search on PlaySkool's website). It possibly could have been Fischer-Price, but I have searched for it that way, too. I am going to dig out that cover & I'll post the tracks.
