From:
Date: 23 Sep 97 - 12:54 AM

While searching the DT and the forum to try to find the source of the variant, supposedly Anglo-Welsh, lyrics that I have for ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT, I made an interesting discovery: although lullabies constitute a healthy fraction of the world's folk songs, there are only 35 listings in the DT under @lullaby and no threads I could find devoted to collecting them. There are a goodly number referred to individually here and there, but no compilation. So I propose to post the lyrics to this version of A.T.T.N. (which is not in the DT), both in the hope that someone knows the source, and to stimulate a round of baby-soothing additions to the database. Here goes:

ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT

(Anglo-Welsh Lyrics -- whatever that means)

Sleep, my babe, no ill betide thee,
All through the night.
Guardian angels watch beside thee
All through the night.

O’er thy cradle stars are beaming,
Silver bright the moon is gleaming;
Thou shalt tread the land of dreaming.
All through the night.

While the earth in calm reposes,
All through the night.
Thou shalt sleep as sleep the roses,
All through the night.

Hushed from sorrow and repining,
Rest until the sun is shining,
In my loving arms reclining,
All through the night.

Looking forward to the fishies we'll catch wi' this net!

Sweet dreams,

Shula

Well, Shula, as soon as you posted your message, I went searching the database for my two favorite Bok-Muir-Trickett lullabies, "YEA HO, LITTLE FISH" and "John of Dreams." They're both beautiful, and they're both in the database - but not categorized as lullabies. I'll have to put my thinking cap on and come up with another.

But in the meantime, I want to voice a complaint about "All Through the Night." I love the version you posted, Shula. Our choir director makes us sing a different version at Christmas, though, and I gag every time we get to the line that goes, "Christmas time is so appealing, All through the night." I'd quote the whole awful thing, but maybe it's lucky for you that I can't find it just now. It's truly tacky.

A sadly neglected group of songs. I guess we get too old for them. Here's one of mine.

BATHING ANGEL

(A)Someone's been (E7)cutting their (A)toenails
I (D)really don't know (A)who
they've (D)left one there, way (A)up in the air
on a (E7)carpet of midnight blue.

They must have been taking a shower
and it didn't all go down the drain
As I look in the sky, I feel in my eye
a few soft drops of rain.

They've used too much talcum powder
and shaken it all around
those sprinkes of white all over the night
are making the stars shine down.

It must be a pretty young angel
taking a tub up there
now the day is done, in the setting sun
I see a few strands of her hair.

So go to sleep my darling
now that the day is through
there's a freshly scrubbed young angel
watching over (A)you.

From: Jon W.

Beautiful, Bert, I hope you can post the tune somehow.

Here's one of my favorites, from an old '60s folk collection record I check out from a library some years ago and already submitted to DT:

SLEEPY PEEDIE LADDIE

Lies low the sun and shadows tall
across the fields are creepin'
And soon the big round yellow moon
will o'er the brae come deepin'
Haste ye noo, lay by your barrow,
Daddy'l mend the broken wheel tomorrow
Come ye in and get ye bedded doon,
It's time my lad was sleepin'.

Come put ye on your wee white goon (gown)
afore the peat fire cheery,
I'll gang the mornin' tae the toon (town)
for sweeties for my dearie
Hush ye noo and stop your sighin'
Or Wee Willie Winkie'll come a-pryin'
Snug ye doon, my lad, and sleep ye soond (sound)
For mommie's sittin' near ye.

He's played all day wi' golden sun,
and weary is my laddie
His curly head is noddin',
and he's greetin' for his daddy.
Wist ye noo, my brave wee fellow,
tears'll wet your cozy cozy pillow
Close your eyes while Mother sings to you,
My sleepy peedie laddie.

Go softly, softly, ane and all,
and gentle wi' your speakin'
He's turned his wee face to the wall
And ceased his plaintive weepin'
Dream ye sweet, my bonny fellow,
Eyes so blue and hair so yellow yellow
Hush now, lightly let your footsteps fall,
for my wee laddie's sleepin'.

From an album of folk songs from the Orkney Isles.
"Peedie" is the Orkney equivalent of "wee", apparently.

The most effective sleep-inducer I know is "On Top of Old Smoky". (Though some might think the lyrics unsuitable for children.) This is not a comparison, by the way--I don't know any of the other songs people have mentioned except for the beautiful "All Through the Night".

Those lyrics are brilliant, Bert!

Dear Bert,

Thanks for your charming "Bathing Angel." Neat! Have a "Bathtub Shanty" my kids love. Thanks for the reminder.

Dear JonW,

Lost track of this thread for awhile, but had to find it to tell you that "Sleepy Peedie Laddie" is the most touching father-to-son lullabye I have ever heard. It certainly gives the lie to the idea that back in the days when "men were men" manliness required the suppression of deep feeling. But then I was reared on a steady diet o' Bobby Burns, so knew better, m'sel.' In fact, I believe I have heard a variant of this song when little; -- what I wouldn't give to know for sure!

Dear All,

Having rescued this thread from near oblivion, I pray ye keep on't! The world needs more peaceful young'uns! Was going to post a classic Yiddish lullabye in the H/Y/L thread, but think it'll fit here. Back later with lyrics.

"Flights of angels..."

It's not a folk song, but I always thought that the lullaby that ends the Beatles' " White Album" was a nice song, if a little too overproduced in their version. ("Now it's time to say good night . . .")

Subject: Lyr Add: BIDH CLANN ULAIDH / THE ULSTER MEN
From: Susan-Marie
Date: 01 Oct 97 - 12:45 PM

Shula, thanks for starting this! I love your version of ATTN.

Here's my favorite lullaby, from a Catherine-Ann McPhee CD. The liner notes say it has versions in Skye and Lewis. It tells the sleeping baby that pipes will be played and wine will be drunk and children of the king will be present at his/her wedding. I like to sing the chorus in the original Gaelic, but sing the verses in English. Each verse is about a particular family, so you can add your own - I sing a verse about my mother's family, the Keenans. What makes it a great lullaby is the repetitive rhythm and words (which also make the Gaelic easy to learn).

BIDH CLANN ULAIDH (THE ULSTER MEN) - traditional

Bidh Clann Ulaid, laoigh 's a lurain
Bidh Clann Ulaid, air do bhannis
Bidh Clann Ulaid, laoigh 's a lurain
Deanamh an danns' air do bhanais

CHORUS: Bidh Clann a' Righ, bidh Clann a' Righ
Bidh Clann a' Righ, air do bhanais
Bidh Clann a' Righ, seinnear a' phiob
Olar a' fion air do bhanais

Bidh Clann Amhlaid nar fir ghreanmhor
Bidh Clann Amhlaid, air do bhannis
Bidh Clann Amhlaid nar fir ghreanmhor
Deanamh an danns' air do bhanais. CHORUS

Bidh Clann Choinnich nam feachd soilleir
Bidh Clann Choinnich, air do bhannis
Bidh Clann Choinnich nam feachd soilleir
Deanamh an danns' air do bhanais. CHORUS

Bidh Clann Dhomhail, ta chaneonach
Bidh Clann Dhmohail, air do bhannis
Bidh Clann Dhomhail, ta chaneonach
Deanamh an danns' air do bhanais. CHORUS

Translation:

Verses:

The Ulster men, dearest one my love
The Ulster men will be at your wedding
The Ulster men, dearest one my love
Will dance at your wedding

The MacAulays will be there, the handsome men
etc.

The MacKenzies will be there, the bright host
etc.

The MacDonalds will be there, 'tis no surprise
etc.

Chorus:

The king's children will be there, the king's children will be there
The king's children will be there at your wedding
The king's children will be there, pipes will be played
Wine will be drunk at your wedding

Apologies for any mis-transcriptions of the Gaelic.

I think Barges would qualify as a lullabye. It has a beautiful, gently rolling melody, like the Mississippi. It's in the DT. I first encountered this song when my sisters learned it at Campfire Girl camp in Minnesota. They, however, only learned the first two verses. This shortcoming was compensated by the fact that they learned to sing it in two part harmony and in rondo--exceedingly pretty when done this way.

Don't count on the keywords "@" being inclusive. We started keywording late in the process, don't remember all of them at any given time. When other people contribute songs, they do not usually use the keywords and if we are not familiar with a song, we may miss some.

By all means, use the keywords to find songs, but do not assume you have found them all that way. If you like, you can tell us that we are missing certain keywords from certain songs.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE GARTAN MOTHER'S LULLABY
From: Alice
Date: 04 Oct 97 - 06:25 PM

My favorite is "The Gartan Mother's Lullaby". Dick, I checked this in the DT and have some corrections for you. First, it is Gartan, not Garton. My sources are Irish Country Songs, collected and arranged by Herbert Hughes, vol.one, 1909, and the album notes from Songs of Ireland by Mary O'Hara, written by Liam Clancy, 1958. Also, Lullaby doesn't have the "e" on the end in this case. In the second line, it sounds like Eeval, but it refers to "Aoibheal", who guards the Grey Rock. I have another source, True Irish Ghost Stories, which refers to her as a banshee rather than just a fairy woman, as Liam Clancy calls her. In the ghost story book, it reads, "The most famous Banshee of ancient times was that attached to the kingly house of O'Brien, Aibhill, who haunted the rock of Graglea above Killaloe, near the old palace of Kincora. In A.D. 1014 was fought the battle of Clontarf, from which the aged king, Brian Boru, knew that he would never come away alive, for the previous night Aibhill had appeared to him to tell him of his impending fate."

THE GARTAN MOTHER'S LULLABY

Sleep, O babe, for the red bee hums
The silent twilight's fall.
Eeval (Aoibheal) from the Grey Rock comes
To wrap the earth in thrall.
A lyan* van o, my child, my joy,
My love and heart's desire,
The crickets sing you lullaby
Beside the dying fire.

Dusk is drawn, and the Green Man's thorn
Is wreathed in rings of fog.
Sheevra sail's his boat til morn,
Upon the starry bog.
A lyan van o, the paly moon
Hath brimmed her cusp in dew,
And weeps to hear the sad sleep-tune
I sing, O love, to you.

repeat first verse.

This is one of the first songs I sang at the Irish session that I attend. It has a very sweet melody, and is a crowd pleaser.

Dear Alice,

The Gartan Mother's Lullaby is truly lovely. Is the tune used for anything else you know, perhaps something with a sound clip already in the DT?

Note to Dick, since you have asked for sources, whenever possible, add this belated annotation to the "All Through The Night" variant that started this thread. These lyrics are attributed to Florence Hoare in a collection called, I think, Folksongs of The British Isles. Just stumbled on it, yesterday, in our local Bluegrass store. Learned the verses long ago, without notes.

Subject: Lyr Add: JELLYBEAN LULLABY
From: Ferrara
Date: 07 Oct 97 - 07:59 AM

Well, here's another home-grown lullaby. Someday we'll have the knack of sharing tunes easily, as well as words! I may be able to get a midi version if anyone wants to try it. Or I can try some kind of formatted notation, similar to Bert's attempt. The tune's kind of nice.

This was made up (not written) when I was out of town with my 3 or 4 year old son and he couldn't get to sleep in a strange room. I just tried to put together all the pretty, pleasant images I could think of. It worked well on many nights until he started thinking he was too old for such "baby stuff." The order of verses is arbitrary, except for the first verse.

JELLYBEAN LULLABY

If I had a bag of jellybeans,
I would save all the red ones for you
And if I had a visit from the Queen,
I would bring her in to say goodnight to you.

Chorus: And if I had a big soft bed
I'd let you lay down your sleepy little head
And If I had a bag of jellybeans
I would save all the red ones for you

If I had a stairway to the stars,
I would climb up the Milky Way with you
And if I had a ticket on a rocketship to Mars
I would fly through the sky with you too. (chorus)

Well, if I had a little baby pony
I'd bring it home and take you for a ride
And if I had a pony and its mommy
We could go for a ride side by side. (chorus)

If I had a garden full of worms
I'd dig up all the fattest worms for you.
And if I found a worm with a very funny squirm,
I'd keep it in a bucket for you. (chorus)

Now if I had the rainbow in the sky
I would climb up the rainbow with you.
And if I thought you'd give it a try
We could slide down the other side too. (chorus)

Last Chorus: And if I had a big soft bed,
I'd let you lay down your sleepy little head,
And If I had a bag of jellybeans,
I would save all the red ones,
and the pink ones and the blue ones,
I would save all the purple ones for you

Dear Ferrara, there is a format for sharing tunes via text files called ABC. Click Here to get to the ABC homepage. There is some downloadable software and some explanation there. I've only used it a little, but I think it will do the trick. Bert's attempt is more or less ABC. He sent me his tune in a private message, in which it was formatted better, and I was able to figure it out enough to enter it into Noteworthy Composer (a music notation shareware program) and listen to it, and also play it on tin whistle. Anyway, I think ABC notation could be used to transmit tunes in the forum by including it in the message. The recipient could select and copy it to Notepad or other ascii capable word processor and save it as ascii. Then the ABC software could read it and play it for you, also turn it into MIDI, etc.

I love your lyrics and would like to hear the tune.

PS. I've done the hard part of figuring out the tune for "Sleepy Peedie Laddie" and entering it into Noteworthy Composer. Now I need to output it in various formats and bring it from home to work where I can post it or e-mail it to interested parties. I'll try and remember to do that tonight if I have time.

To Jon W, thank you so much for the info about ABC format. It will take me a little time to get the idea and put it into practice I'm afraid.

Would you be willing to start a new thread on sharing tunes as well as words, and put in that link so it will be generally available? I know there has been a lot of discussion of how we can share music; I'm hoping we can bring it all together in one place.

I would absolutely love the music to "Sleepy Peedie Laddie."

About lullabies. My son loved all the usual ones, "All the Pretty Little Horses," "Hush Little Baby Don't Say a Word," as well as "Rockabye Sweet Baby James." But one night when I ran out of ideas, he said, 'Sing "Haul 'em Away."' This is a fairly bawdy sea song he had heard at our song circle when he was supposed to be sleeping. We had a friend who was a newborn intensive care nurse. She said that at least one baby in her care would always fall asleep to "Friggin' in the Riggin'".

Jon,

The version I sent you in a private message was EXACTLY the same cut and paste that I put in the thread. I don't know why they came out different.

It was supposed to be kinda ABC but I have great difficulty with the timing. I don't really know how I sing it myself. It just happens.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could have some buttons out in that unused space to the right here. Just hit on the note and it inserts it into the thread.

Don't tell Max though, I'm sure he's busy enough as it is just trying to earn a living.

Bert.

Does anyone know where I can find this lullaby? I thought it was the most beautiful lullaby I had ever heard as a child. I'm not sure of some of the words but it goes something like this: Oh, my baby, my curly-headed baby, Your daddy's in the cotton field a workin' all the day (repeat) for his PAY Do you want the moon to play with? Or the stars to run away with? They'll come if you don't cry. So a lulla, lulla, lulla , lulla, bye now In your mammy's arms a layin And soon you'll be a sleepin' So a lulla, lulla, lulla, lulla, bye.

I too heard this lullaby as a child. - My father sand it to all his 19 grandchildren. It has now been sung through three generations of children - in Australia!!! a far cry from the deep southern American cottonfields and slave singers of yesteryear. Just recently on a Classical Music Station in Sydney, Australia, I heard Paul Robson singing quite a lovely version of this song. I'm sure I could find out details and record numbers if you are interested.

Lullabyes are among my most favorite songs. John O'Dreams has already been mentioned; some other favorites:

Wynken, Blynken and Nod
Dance to Your Daddy
Little Man, You've Had a Busy Day
Skye Boat Song
Hobo's Lullaby
That Sly Old Gentleman from Featherbed Lane.

I'd love to hear the Gartan Mother's Lullaby--the words are wonderful.

Orpheus,
Did you ever find out what the song was? Was that song from a cassette tape that was personalized to you? I'm the same age as you and I had a tape, but I can't find a lot of info on them and I was wondering if you were more successful than I have been at finding information?

I'm also trying to track down a lullaby, i havve to say i don't remeber anythign about it other than it sounds sort of sad and it has a few lines something like

'whisper to the wind and hum a little tune,'
or maybe 'listen to the wind'
but the listen part could have been 'listen to the loon cry,'

i'm sorry to say i cannot for hte life of me rember it properly, and i'm really trying to find out what it is, i have the tune stuck in my head, and cannot get it out, and i think i'll get it out if i can remeber the name, the songss been stuck in my head for six months, and i'm starting to wonder if i made it up even thoguh i know my music teacher taught it to everyone in my third grade class, i'm only a junior, so it wasn't that long ago.

Trying to find the lyrics to a lyllaby that my mom use to sing to me... that her mom use to sing to her... We called it Blanket Bay but I'm not sure that is the proper name. The chorus is something like:

All aboard for Blanket Bay
Won't come home til the break of day
Roll him around in his little white sheet
Til you cant see his little bare feet
Then I'll tuck him up in his trundle bed
All abooard little sleepy head
God Bless Mommy and Daddy and sail away
All aboard for Blanket Bay

Krissy: I managed to find an advertisement for it on the Web, which reproduced the first page. Here it is as far as that goes:

All Aboard for Blanket Bay
Words by Andrew B. Sterling
Music by Harry von Tilzer
Copyright 1910

There's a ship sails away
At the close of each day,
Sails away to the land of dreams.
Mamma's little Boy Blue
Is the captain and crew
Of this wonderful ship
Called The White Pillow Slip.
When the day's play is o'er,
And the toys on the floor
Cast aside by a little brown hand,
Mamma hugs him up tight,
Papa whispers "Goodnight,
Little sailor boy, sail into sweet slumberland."

All aboard for Blanket Bay.
Won't come back till the break of day.
Roll him round in his little white sheet
Till you can't see his little bare feet.
Then you tuck him up in his...

I remember the rest as

...nice clean bed.
Ship ahoy, little sleepyhead.
Bless Mommy and Daddy and sail away.
All aboard for Blanket Bay.

My mother sang it too. It was a point of perversity for me & my brother to scramble to get our feet out from under the covers during the line "So you can't see his little bare feet" and to insert "and Joey and Jonny" after "Bless Mommy and Daddy".

Another lullaby based on the same metaphor is in the Pankakes' book:

Sail, Baby, Sail

Words by Alice C. D. Riley
1899

Baby's boat the silver moon
Sailing in the sky,
Sailing o'er the sea of sleep
While the clouds float by.

    Sail, baby, sail
    Out upon that sea,
    Only don't forget to sail
    Back again to me.

Baby's fishing for a dream,
Fishing near and far,
Her line a silver moonbeam is,
Her bait a silver star.

    Sail, baby, sail...

I also had a personalized audio cassette tape of lullabies (I think it was a mail in gift from huggies or something) and I'm trying to track down any info about it...

Some of the lyrics were:
It's time to go to dreamland once again
and sail beside the rainbow till the end
I’ll be with you
The whole night through
And welcome the morning sun.

I can't remember much of the rest.

Thanks!

And they'll all be there
............
Leo the lion, and the lioness.
and the tortoise and the hair

And then one by one,
we'll say thankyou to the sun

And greet the moon, cuz very soon
we'll be fading away.

Who Now Will Sing Me Lullabies - Kate Rusby (from the album 'Little Lights')

Lay me down gently, lay me down low,
I fear I am broken and won't mend, I know.
One thing I ask when the stars light the skies,
Who now will sing me lullabies,
Oh who now will sing me lullabies.

In this big world I'm lonely, for I am but small,
Oh angels in heaven, don't you care for me at all?
You heard my heart breaking for it rang through the skies,
So why don't you sing me lullabies,
Oh why don't you sing me lullabies.

I lay here; I'm weeping for the stars they have come,
I lay here not sleeping; now the long night has begun.
The man in the moon, oh he can't help but cry,
For there's no one to sing me lullabies,
Oh there's no one to sing me lullabies.

So lay me down gently, oh lay me down low,
I fear I am broken and won't mend, I know .
One thing I ask when the stars light the skies,
Who now will sing me lullabies,
Oh who now will sing me lullabies.

Who will sing me to sleep
Who will sing me to sleep
Who will sing me to sleep
Who will sing me to sleep

Cheers,

Quokka

When I go home for Spring Break I will listen to my CD that my Dad recorded the song from the Huggies tape onto, and try to sit down and type out all the lyrics...Actually, I think the tape has a little booklet with the lyrics, so, if I can read the tiny writing, I will do it that way....Or at least try to...I have a lot of homework, but, I will eventually put the lyrics on here ;)

From: GUEST,Kimberly Edmonds

HUGGIES/PLAYSKOOL LULLABIES:
Clearly, where the name Kimberly is, that is just because it was personalized for me. So, for each person it would be a different name. But, here are the lyrics.

1) What a day you've had, Kimberly my child. Full of fun and games, Kimberly my child. And all those moments in your day, make you who you are, Little Kimberly, my child. See the stars above, one shines on you. You can feel the light, oh warm goodnight. And when you close your eyes to sleep, your star shines so bright, Through the night. It's time to go to Dreamland, once again, And sail beside the rainbow, to the end. I'll be with you, the whole night through, and welcome the morning sun. What a day you've had, Kimberly my child. Full of fun and games, Kimberly my child. It's time to go to Dreamland, once again, And sail beside the rainbow, to the end. I'll be with you, the whole night the through, and welcome the morning sun. I'll be with you, the whole night through, so Kimberly, let's say, goodnight. Goodnight Kimberly.

2) Kimberly, Kimberly, It's time for bed now. Kimberly, come along now. Little Kimberly come to bed, close your eyes, lay your weary head, on the pillow. A Fairy Princess came to me, and said there's something you should see tonight in your dreams, so Kimberly tie your wings. And sail away, to Neverland, where Jack and Jill, and Peter Pan will be waiting for you. I don't know but I've been told, it's a land of children never older than two or three, just wait and see. After such a busy day, it's high time you were on your way to dreamland. Now your heart is pure and gay, but you'll grow up and far away, to never be young again, never be young again. Before you know you've been our way, the sun will bring you a brand new day, through your window. And all the things your eyes will see, and all you'll do and all you'll be is awaiting you, so if I were you, I'd sleep, sleep, sleep. Kimberly, close your eyes now.

3) There comes a time in every day, when Mother Nature has to say, goodnight, goodnight, goodnight. All her children need their sleep, their tender souls the Lord will keep, tonight, tonight, tonight. So Kimberly close your eyes, and drift away. And journey down to sleepy town, the moon will light the way. And they'll all be there, Benny Badger and the Bear, Leo Lion and the Lioness and the Tortoise and the Hare. And then one by one, we'll say thank you to the sun, and greet the moon, cause very soon, you'll be fading away. Hear the wind, it whispers soft and low, Kimberly climb aboard, and off we go, tonight, tonight, tonight. The waves roll gently on the sea, the voices singing quietly, goodnight, goodnight, goodnight. And as the stars climb high into the sky, the children of the world will dream, so Kimberly don't you cry. Cause they'll all be there, Benny Badger and the Bear, Leo Lion and the Lioness, the Tortoise and the Hare. And then one by one, we'll say thank you to the sun, and greet the moon, cause very soon, you'll be fading away. Hear the birds sing, goodnight, hear the kittens say goodnight, hear the wind say goodnight, goodnight. Sweet dreams Kimberly.

HUGGIES/PLAYSKOOL LULLABIES:
I had an unfortunate event happen just within the last couple of years. My music player went crazy and ate my tape inside. This tape was the same Huggies/Playskool Lullabies mentioned above, but for me-Jessica. I had been planning on taking it in to get transferred to CDs just to have copies to be safe, but I never got in.

This tape means the world to me. I'm going off to college and yet it still holds some of the clearest and best memories in it. I have been searching for the last two years for this tape in any form with no luck.

If ANYONE can help me, you have no idea how appreciative I would be. I am willing to purchase it from anywhere or purchase a copy of the Jessica version from anyone. I just dearly want that music back.

Thank you for any help!!!

Aw, Jessica. I wish I could help. I have these tapes for all 3 of my daughters. None of which are named Jessica.
I am in the process of recording them on CD for this very reason.
My youngest used to think it was her Daddy singing on the tape. So sweet.....obviously has never really heard him sing! lol

I ordered that tape for my son nearly 23 years ago! I have the cover, but the tape went missing. I loved it. His name is Coy, and I remember the singer whispered his name..."Coo-oyyy. COOYYYYEEE..." He fell asleep to it every night! The tape was make by Playskool if I remember correctly, offered with the diaper proofs-of-purchase. I have wanted to replace it, and also order more to give as gifts, but I'm sure they no longer make them (per search on PlaySkool's website). It possibly could have been Fischer-Price, but I have searched for it that way, too. I am going to dig out that cover & I'll post the tracks.

If anyone could send me a digital copy of the huggies tape, doesn't matter what the name is, I would forever be grateful. Or if anyone could send me a copy in the mail. It's crazy how many people cherish this tape but yet it is impossible to get a hold of.
