Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominatio From: Mark Ross Date: 18 Dec 09 - 01:38 AM I don' quite picture either Duncan, or Brendan in a tux. Utah, yes. Bruce always did like to gussy up. By that I mean wearing the proper costume for the occassion. When he was invited to give the private tour in Chicago for the opening of the King Tut exhibit he arrived in pith helmet, safari jacket and Bermuda Schwartz with knee socks. When he came back from a festival in Switzerland he sported a beret and plus fours. I should mention that I once saw Dave Van Ronk in a tuxedo, looking like the worlds biggest emperor penguin! Definitely clown noses. Mark Ross |

Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominations!! From: Janie Date: 18 Dec 09 - 09:07 AM The leather jacket will do quite nicely, Kendall. Jacqui might get a bit roughed up, fighting off the starlets, but she can handle it. |

Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominations!! From: Art Thieme Date: 18 Dec 09 - 10:16 AM Mark and all, When Utah showed up dressed in the 18th century garb for the pre-opening invite-only tour of the great King Tut exhibit at Chicago's Field Museum----it very quickly became apparent that he knew ten times more about Egyptology than the official tour guide did. Indeed, Utah Phillips could (and did!!) read the original ancient hieroglyphics carved into the stone artifacts there. It was pretty amazing. He was the consummate showman---and it was always aimed at the education and enlightenment of his audience! Utah took over that Tut tour. When it was over, the tour guide, an actual Egyptologist with the Field Museum, and Bruce, were deep in conversation. I do miss being able to call him and gab for a while. Those talks were always a revelation---even if it was only a pointed joke that had real intent when you thought past the hilarious punchline. Sorry for the thread drift, folks. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominations!! From: Art Thieme Date: 18 Dec 09 - 10:29 AM More drift---and a personal message: Maeve, I'm in a hurry this morning; An old friend from my No Exit Coffeehouse Chicago days --circa 1960s, Carl Stark, went and picked up my father's book for me. THANKS for finding the one copy available on the Internet It will be grand to have it and to be able to read it without the adolescent baggage I had with me back in the 1940s and 1950s. Art |
Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominations!! From: maeve Date: 18 Dec 09 - 12:45 PM Art- That's no thread drift, that's a Utah story! Thanks for letting me know you got your dad's book. I am so happy to know that! I've been racking my brain wondering how I could get it for you! maeve PS Any more fashion advice for Kendall, Jacqui, and Dan? |
Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominations!! From: kendall Date: 18 Dec 09 - 12:56 PM Utah was one of the most intelligent and interesting people I have ever had the good fortune to call Friend. I miss him every day. |

Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominations!! From: Dan Schatz Date: 20 Dec 09 - 11:09 AM Amazon.com has a few back in stock, but they're almost out again already. Righteous Babe is still the way to go - or Camsco, or Folk Legacy (you have to call; it's not listed online), or any of the performers. I'm also very pleased that we've managed to make a few lists of top folk albums of the year, including the following gem for Boston's wonderful folk critic, Scott Alarik: "VARIOUS ARTISTS "Singing Through the Hard Times: A Tribute to Utah Phillips'' Stars like Pete Seeger, Emmylou Harris, and Ani DiFranco swap tracks with community musicians like Maine's tart treasure Kendall Morse and gruff Wisconsin trucker Larry Penn, capturing the mix of musical brilliance and raw truth that defined Phillips's radical genius." "Maine's tart treasure?" *GRIN* Dan |
Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominations!! From: Dan Schatz Date: 21 Dec 09 - 02:16 PM And they're out again. Whoo-hoo! Dan |
Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominations!! From: SINSULL Date: 21 Dec 09 - 02:36 PM I think it's a misprint. It should read Maine's treasure, Kendall Morse, and his... CELLAR! I know. Wish Spaw was still allowed in with old dude. It gets lonesome down here. |
Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominations!! From: ranger1 Date: 21 Dec 09 - 06:00 PM Just had a chat with the nephew and told him that his friends Kendall and Jacqui were nominated (Dan, I only left you out because Bean doesn't know you) for a Grammy. He said: "Cool! Say hi to them for me." |
Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominatio From: Ron Davies Date: 21 Dec 09 - 06:14 PM Congratulations to all involved. By the way, I don't know the timing on this--as to when you have to get your votes in as to who wins in a given category. But I do know that anybody can become a member of the Grammy voters by joining the Grammy association--I think there's a fee of $75/ year or something like that. A choral group in my area did exactly that. Lots of members of the group joined. And the group won in that category. There's a strong suspicion there is a causal relationship. Now folkies may be completely above stuffing the ballot box. But if we really want Dan, Kendall, Jacqui, et al. to win, it's just possible Mudcatters can influence the outcome. If we don't mind using this tactic. If of course it's not already too late for voting. Of course it's also very possible that the Utah tribute will win without any of this. If I had to guess, I'd say the only strong competition might be the entry from--who was it--Loudon Wainright? |

Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominations!! From: Dan Schatz Date: 22 Dec 09 - 10:48 AM All the nominees are very strong, even if the others don't include "Maine's moonwalking, leather jacket wearing, guitar slinging tart treasure." Grammy voting has now begun, and will continue through the first week in January. Ron, there are requirements to become a member of the recording academy - you have to be credited on a certain number of published tracks, be actively pursuing your craft, etc. On the other hand, many Mudcat members meet those requirements, and it is always good to have more academy members with expertise in traditional music. Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominations!! From: GUEST,David E. Date: 22 Dec 09 - 11:18 PM Slightly off topic, however I want to mention that just this past Saturday a fund raiser was held for Utah's Nevada City area homeless shelter, Hospitality House. More than a dozen musicians, poets and storytellers gave their time and talents that evening and over seventeen thousand dollars was raised to help those in need. A grand time for all who attended, a most worthy cause and the spirit of U. Utah Phillips continues on. David E. http://www.hospitalityhouseshelter.org/ |
Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominations!! From: Dan Schatz Date: 22 Dec 09 - 11:27 PM Seventeen thousand! That's fabulous! We raised a couple of thousand with our Utah Phillips night in Washington DC and were proud of it, but I'm blown away by your success! Thanks for mentioning that. That shelter and the Peace Center, along with his children, were Utah's pride and joy, and of far greater importance to him than any awards. Dan |

Subject: RE: Congrats! Kendall,Jacqui &Dan Grammy nominations!! From: Art Thieme Date: 29 Dec 09 - 01:23 AM Good people, I had no idea our local paper, the News Tribune, was going to create that You Tube composite. Old friend, Ron Miles, just e-mailed me with a link to it even before I noticed it in this thread. If it means some extra cash for the Phillips family that would just be stupendous!! Jeff Dankert wrote the story after we talked on the phone. He's a fine reporter over at the paper, and he did an earlier very nice piece on the Smithsonian requisitioning the original slides from which the "Art's Place" folk scene photo site was created for me by Bruce Kallick (BKlick here at Mudcat.) Amazing, I'm glad I looked in on this Forum tonight. Max and all of you have made it possible for me to keep a presence in our folk music world from afar now that playing music is not there for me. Thanks to all of you... Art Thieme |

I just got it, today and am listening to the second one for the first time. Almost done. Have listened to the other one once, but will be listening to them both over and over for the next few days, so I can get them set in my head, who is performing what song, etc. Anyway, I LOVE IT!!! SO much Truth, Beauty, Heart, Integrity, incredible talents and songs. What a wonderful thing you have all wrought! Thanks so much. It is so NEAT to open it and see my friends listed as the producers AND to get to hear my friends and others I have yet to meet singing Utah's fine, fine songs. My heart is brimming over with joy and now, Art is just coming on. LOVE it!! luvyakat |
