My daughter is at the vet's as I write with Miz Nanny Dizzy, the pit bull matriarch who watches over my grandson, his mom, and the rest of the household. It looks as though Diz has had a stroke, or something. With the clarity of a three year old, Morgan took my breath away when I went over to get him and he said, "Dizzy's gonna be dead." We did a meditation and prayer for her right after that, so he understands that may not be the case. I know he's got to learn about death, probably through loss of a pet, at some point, but Diz is the neatest, nicest, sweetest dog...I really don't want it to be her that teaches him this.

Please send some thoughts or what have you to Dizzy and my dau., Rue, as they wait at the vet's, etc. Dizzy is very broad and is mostly black. I'll try to post a picture of her later today.

Thanks so much,

kat

I really don't want it to be her that teaches him this.

I hear you. I feel for you. But I will be grateful for you if it isn't your decision, because if he does learn it from her, it will be a sweet lesson indeed.

Remember, stay on his level, and that from that place, it isn't so awful.

Wrapping it all up in love,

~Susan

Thanks, my friends.

My daughter is staying home with her until her "dad" can get back to town from work. The vet said it is either a brain tumour/cancer, an infection or, possibly, poison, though none of the other canines show any signs of the same. Diz is only 6 or 7 years old so a little young for a stroke and the vet said those are fairly rare.

If it's poison, the vet thinks it's just about run its course and she will probably come out of it. If it's an infection they can treat it. If the other, it would cost thousands to take her across the mtns. to Ft. Collins for an MRI and possible surgery.

Thanks, Lucy, glad to hear your pup is okay after having a stroke. They took blood and will have the results of those tests sometime this afternoon. If it is bad news, her dad, Gary, is going to need a lot of help as she has been there for him through all kinds of thick and thin; he's in a somewhat fragile state himself.

She's such an incredible being...she knows something is wrong, but there are no complaints from her, just a gentle acceptance of love and hugs and pats with a three year old eye-to-eye with her on the floor, saying "It'll be awright, Deezee."

Thanks, Susan, I know...thankfully it will not be my decision and she has been a teacher all along, for Morgan and his young pups as well as the newest pup her dad got for her to teach. We're just not ready for her to go.

Thanks, again,

kathopeful

Sending good vibes to you and yours, Kat. Got the goose bumps with your grandson's first comment.

My Corky had a stroke & lived 5 more grand years. Still miss her though. Good Luck.

Thanks, Mickey. There are a couple of pix, from Easter when Dizzy helped him find easter eggs in the yard, on THIS PAGE. Not the best ones of her, but the only ones I could find at the moment.

Oh Kat...out of the mouths of babes. I hope she will be OK. Is this the same dog that went walkabout a while back that Morgan was so worried about?

Morgan, this is from Granny Sorcha....all things have their time, and we cannot tell that time. Whereever and whatever Dizeee does or goes, she will be there when you need her. Just call, and she will answer. Tell her to get hold of Miz Annie, Annie can tell her just how to visit you if she needs to. Love you Morgan.

Thanks, ranger1 and Granny Sorcha...indeed she will be there for him. She is not the one that went walkabout, she's too smart and old to leave behind a great meal ticket. She's the housemate's dog and the one who is teaching the youngsters how to behave.

Just heard from the vet. No poisons, no infections, although they said not all of them will show up on a blood test, so they are treating for inflammation with prednisone and antibiotic. I am giving thanks that that is it and she will be much improved in a day or two. This or something better for the highest good of all concerned.

Thanks, folks,

luvyakat

Sounds like great news-Loved the pictures, Kat.
Thinking about getting a wee cat myself. I truly love dogs-but they are not allowed here - Might as well be in the slammer! Take Care.

Oh. So sorry kat. And this after the puppy escaped and was never found. Such a hard thing to deal with. My Puppers was six years young when he had his first canine epileptic seizure - sometimes nuerological things can manifest even in healthy dogs. let's hope that it's not a neurological problem. I'm praying for her and everyone who loves her.

I met another great dog today.

When we first saw him, he looked like a wandering stray. We have fast roads here, with full-charging 18-wheelers, and the road's hilly curves are too dangerous for them to jam on the brakes, be it cow, bear, dog, duck, rooster, or man in the road. We've lost a few ourselves.

So it has been my policy for the last several years that when I see a dog on the road that is clearly an abandoned, roaming dog-- and yes I know the difference-- I pull over when I can, and catch them kindly if they will come to me, and take them to my firend who runs the local ASPCA shelter. Many of these dogs, even shy ones, do come to me.... I figure it's a gift I should use, since I have it, you know?

My friend has a great record of placing hard-to-place adult dogs, and an uncanny sense of who is the right person for which dogs-- they have the best chance of living, and getting a home, with him, so I take them off the street. Everyone in these parts knows to call Andy and check with him, if they're missing a dog.

Sometimes, if the dog has current tags and can get along with other dogs, I bring them to our house for a couple of days and report them to the ASPCA as well as the county dog warden, with their full support. We have a roomy outdoor pen with shelters which is extremely visible on our busy road; owners passing by looking for their dogs can see their dogs there and have been glad to knock on the door and claim their dog back. I love the stories they tell me of their escapte-artist mutt, and we always have a good visit. Sometimes these dogs have gotten vet visits too, before I take them to Andy, to save the ASPCA the cost of the checkup. (Especially if it seems to be an abused dog.)

Anyhoo! I was afraid I was seeing another one today, at Arby's, and thinking he'd be one to take home for a few days to feed up. After we got our order we went out back to check to see if he was still wandering, or was as I had hoped, merely a dog in rough shape getting a bit of exercise on his own while the owner lunched in his vehicle. I didn't see him at all, and thought he'd gone across the open grassy area to a safe, truck-free zone. So we shrugged and started our lunch in the sunny van.

All of a sudden the dog came along, this time with an owner in tow! Not leashed, but WITH, walking along. Seeing the dog up close I could see how old and grizzled he was. A northern dog-- a sled-dog mix, but very whited-out in the places where old dogs show their age. But shiny coat? In the sun-- first we've had for weeks-- he positively glowed. GREAT condition, just old. I called out to the similarly-battlescarred owner how much we liked his dog and how glad I was to see he was not a stray. He came over and I described how I take strays off the roads when I can.

He told me he had adopted this old dog many years before from a pound in Alaska, that he had indeed been a sled dog who he had rehabilitated as a house dog, and how they went everywhere together. What a sweet man.... I asked if I could give the dog a bite of ham. "Sure, if he'll let you give it to him," he replied. I offered a bit of ham, the dog sniffed and declined politely. I offered it again, asking him if he wanted a treat. Wag, wag, wag, yes! As a treat, he was willing to take it. He got a second bite the same way, happily. "His sandwich is in the car," said his man, "and he'll get his, tonight, at dinner time. He usually won't eat for anybody but me."

I have no dounbt this man and this dog had exchanged MANY life lessons.

I was so glad to have met them both.

I wish I could meet Nanny Dizzy, too.

Love ya, Kat,

~Susan

That's beautiful, Susan, thank you. You, too, Sandra.

Dave's Wife, Numa, the puppy was found. I had posted a thread about her, sorry you must've missed it. She was mysteriously turned into the animal shelter the day before Thanksgiving by people who said their "friend" decided they couldn't keep her, so we had her back for that holiday and believe me we were giving thanks! The fence has been rebuilt, with new posts cemented in place and nobody wanders any more. Of course they still stay inside when no one is home. Thanks for your concern.

I think I have good news. Nanny Dizzy has had her first round of meds and my dau. reports she is MUCH better, so I hope it's just some kind of infection which caused some head swelling and she will heal up, quickly and completely. Please keep sending good thoughts, hope (thanks, Skipy) etc. as we KNOW they help, everytime!

Susan, What a lovely story. You do good work!!
Just watched the "Animal Planet" channel-Never miss the ASPCA stories. As usual, I shed a few tears & at the end, smiles.

Showed a stray adopted by a gentlman who decided he wanted to train the dog to visit hospital patients. He had been abused & thru love & training is now the gentlest dog one can imagine. He visited a lonely older lady & warmed her heart.

Oh joy! I am so happy to hear that Numa made it home safe at long last. yes, I had missed that update.

Don't you wish they could talk just so they could tell us where they went on their adventures? My husband works in the film biz and we have often talked about attching a small lipstick sized cam to our Cat Inky's collar and hooking it up to a real-time video website so we can watch from the Inky-Cam as he strolls through the neighborhood from place to place.

Inky got tossed out of his apartment by a cruel boyfriend when he was only a few months old and had the good sense to keep walking until he found somewhere safe, dry and cool (it was high summer). He chose to camp out under our cottage. In Los Angeles, many 1920s cottages sit on raised foundations and so the underneath is a kittykat wonderland if they can find a way in an out. We took him him and even tried to return him to his real mommie, Soraya from Sri lanka, but the mean boyfriend interefered again. We share custody now and the mean boyfriend got the boot. Soraya comes by when she can to cuddle Inky but he lives with us full time. let's say she has unrestricted visitation!

Anyhoo, Inky roams high and wide. He once got locked in a nearby factory over Superbowl 2006 weekend. WE found him and heard him crying but couldn't get him out until that monday AM. He has surgery for a torn ear once and I taped a label on his elizabethian collar with our name and address and the words "My name is INKY, If I look lost please return me to:__" Well, don't you know, several times people spotted him trotting about, decided he looked lost and carted him home under their arm! Once they brought him home from almost 20 blocks away! We ID chipped him after the Superbowl incident!

Well, good for Numa and so happy about Nanny Dizzy. I am hoping and praying this is just a bump in the road for her. Numa is her daughter, right?

YEE-HAW!!! Just visited Miz Dizzy and she is right as rain. THANK YEW!!

Not sure what it was, unless it was an infection, and they will finish the meds, but what matters is she is fine. And, we really thought we'd be putting her down, yesterday. Incredible. Thanks to all of you, again.

Dave's Wife, nope. Nanny Dizzy is the "foster" mother of the 3Stooges aka Numa, her litter sister, Blondie, and their parent's subsequent litter girl, Tokomo, aka the The Girlz, all purebred boxers. I guess technically speaking, little Tokomo, is Dizzy's "little sister" as she also belongs to the housemate, Gary.**BG**

Anyway, here's to Nanny Dizzy sticking around for a good long time!
