If voyager's note:
"Happy birthday Jean Ritchie (Dec 8) @96."
is suggesting that Jean will be 96, I have to say that she will only be a "mere" 92. Born in 1922.
Other than that, I endorse the birthday greetings!
Derek

Dear Mudcat -

Back in 2002, on my birthday no less, I was lucky to win from the Mudcat Auction a personalized edition of the Newport Folk Festival Songbook (edited by Jean Ritchie).

Dear Voyager, Severn, Dan- all of you, thanks for coming to the Common Ground festival concert- for listening and joining in the very wonderful feeling there. A beautiful festival, and country setting. Getting to know Walt Michael and his friends again was marvelous.
Memories of earlier festivals, for me, made it even better... Best of all of course was sharing a stage once more with Doc! He's just as great, just as friendly, as ever. That old album we made, on our duet job (Doc's first solo gig after leaving Clarence Ashley's band) at Gerdes Folk City is now listed as a CD with Smithsonian Folkways, who took over and now manage Moe Asche's catalogue, if anyone wants to own that record. Roger Sprung was also on the bill, singing some, and accompanying us with banjo. Magic times!

And yes, Dan, I had almost myself forgotten about the Award- what a lovely flute, and how good to be honored by Walt and all his (and my) friends. And what the audience didn't see was my serenade backstage after my set, by two or three flute-players- one of the exotic flutes (for lack of the proper name) so tall it was held almost touching the ground at the bottom end, soaring up over the player's head some two feet into the air. What a deep, mellow voice it had.
I was truly complimented...

Blessings on you all, and thanks again for coming, and reporting!
Jean

I saw her the next evening where she did a set ably assisted by her son Jon Pickow. An apology here or there from her for memory and for just having gotten over bronchitis and then the marvelous songs, stories and spoken words of one of the most marvelous performers, writers (music, lyrics and prose), collectors, storytellers and important figures in the folklore world EVER. Still a wonder and a National Treasure who has not only enriched us beyond measure with her regional and family heritage, but then had gon on to expand the horizons of English-speaking folklore even further with her subsequent work in the field.

As always, going beyond a mere concert and into a shared and enlightening experience, where you feel you've been briefly transported to different times and places you'll not soon forget, and where you feel you have been in the prescence of a friend.

Thank you once more, Jean!.....

It was wonderful - an amazing moment to see the two of them together, enjoying an easy rapport. Not only do Jean and Doc share a common musical heritage, they are also both extremely generous performers, supportive of other musicians, and the kind of people who can get on stage together after 40 years with no rehearsal and just have a good time.

And I hope you know, Jean, that the standing ovation when Doc walked on stage wasn't just for Doc - it was for the opportunity and privilege to see you together.

What Voyager didn't mention was that Jean received an award at this festival. Walt Michael, in presenting the award (a handmade native American flute - much more useful than yet another plaque), mentioned not only Jean's importance and influence on American folk music, but also her work against mountaintop removal in Kentucky and the other mountain states.

I would have loved to hear that --you are so lucky.

Hearing about it makes me think I'll go fish out a CD with them both on it that I haven't listened to for ages...

Mudcat's very own Kytrad shared the stage with Doc Watson at the Common Ground on the Hill festival in Westiminster, Md. this afternoon.   The duet was just fine.

Together they performed 3 songs -

    Storm is on the Ocean
    Shady Grove
    Amazing Grace

LOL to these caretakers of our traditional music culture.
