Subject: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: kytrad (Jean Ritchie) Date: 23 Apr 03 - 02:52 PM Finally- after two weeks of false promises, etc.(the site's host' host had problems, or something- who'll ever know? I had just invited some interested Mudcatters to view our newest musical/photographic greeting, some excerpts from our 1953 film, "OSS! OSS! WEE OSS!" a May Day celebration in Cornwall, and of course that was the night the website disappeared. But now it's back- www.jeanritchie.com, so come on in and visit! I shouldn't complain- I suppose many folks have these electronic troubles (I come from a kinder, gentler time!). |

Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: artbrooks Date: 23 Apr 03 - 03:35 PM Is it gone again? |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: Clinton Hammond Date: 23 Apr 03 - 03:48 PM It's not gone... it just has a ruddy great java applet for the 'buttons' that makes it load slower than programs used to off cassette tape... even over my cable modem... |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 Apr 03 - 04:34 PM Didn't seem to take too long for me. Worth the wait anyway. |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: Clinton Hammond Date: 23 Apr 03 - 07:52 PM Java has always taken a long time to load... maybe it's a Netscape thing... And I've yet to see a Java app that was worth the load time... |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: kytrad (Jean Ritchie) Date: 23 Apr 03 - 09:02 PM I usually warn peope to wait for the boxes underneath the Homepage title to "fill in," as they have always been slow. They say, "Books," "Recordings," "Videos," "Itinerary," etc. Eventually they appear, but some folks haven't the patience. Maybe I'll get my erstwhile Webmaster (son Jon) to investigate your suggestions. Thanks- J. |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: artbrooks Date: 23 Apr 03 - 11:15 PM Well, what I get continues to be "Bad request Invalid request -- no address for host www.jeanritchie.com" oh well, such is life. |

Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: GUEST,Jon Date: 23 Apr 03 - 11:48 PM art, I have the same type of problem using my usual ISP, freeserve. I can get in using my alternative, freeuk. As the site was only announced yesterday, I would guess that the domain name is still filtering through the DNS system. I believe this process can take up to 48 hours to take effect. I have tried accessing the site by IP address but that turns out to be a shared address so I can't find a "back door". You will just have to be patient and with luck you will get in soon. Clinton, it is slow here too. One place I would use a Java app is for a chat application. They may not have the same compatibility as the type of system the Mudchat uses but I'd sooner a decent Java app, possibly using IRC any day. Mostly, I prefer to avoid it - it can (as in this case) look good but personaly, I don't think it worth making people with slower connections wait for or running the risk of "excluding" some users for. |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 24 Apr 03 - 04:56 PM I got the same as artbrooks, the first time; then I tried again, and it came right. There's a moral in that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: Tweed Date: 24 Apr 03 - 05:02 PM Mz.Jean, yore site came up perfect here at the work computer and the "OSS,OSS,WEE OSS" film was pretty darn neat too. Yerz, Tweed |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: Little Robyn Date: 24 Apr 03 - 06:13 PM I've downloaded it but I can't make it go! What do I need to play it? Is this the footage that has Margaret about to go under the Oss? They showed that one on telly in Cornwall when I was there in 1972. I'd love to see that again. Oss Oss! Robyn |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: Tweed Date: 24 Apr 03 - 11:20 PM WEE OSS!! ;~) Windows Media Player did it for me Little Robyn. Yerz, Tweed |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: kytrad (Jean Ritchie) Date: 25 Apr 03 - 05:35 PM If you see the whole film sometime, the feet wearing black sandals with yellow dress above (dancing underneath the Oss) are mine- the head nodding time to the music (in the night window) is me. The window shot was planned, but the Oss really captured me while I was standing on the sidelines. That yell was for real! |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: kendall Date: 25 Apr 03 - 09:26 PM Nice web site. Do you ever get this far north? |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: Bev and Jerry Date: 26 Apr 03 - 02:26 AM kytrad: According to this site it used to be said that "if you were caught beneath the veil that you would be pregnant within the year". Bev and Jerry |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: katlaughing Date: 26 Apr 03 - 02:56 AM It came up quickly for me, Jean and I loved the video! Looking through your other videos, I see several that I would love to have. As my grandsons have a 5th b-day coming up, though, I think they will win out, first, with the Sally Rogers' video.:-) Thanks for posting this. Now when I think of Shakespeare I shall hear "An oss, oss, my kingdom for a wee oss!" **bg** |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: GUEST,Jon Date: 26 Apr 03 - 07:08 AM kat, if it came up quickly for you, I'd guess you either have cable or DSL. One problem with Java is the time it can take for the class files to download. Like many, I am stuck with a dial up connection and to make matters worse, round here, the best the phone lines can manage is 28.8K. You could be 50+ times faster than me and there is nothing I can do about it - I'd leap at the chance of broadband here if it existed. Hopefully, one day, these concerns will become a thing of the past but at least for now, my personal view is to try and ensure things work as quickly as possible for those with lesser systems (connections and computers). I'm not suggesting that things that would take me time, e.g. a video should not be used - they should - or that there is no case for using more "advanced stuff" but that it may be a good plan to make sure a "main page" comes up quickly and that everyone can see the basic information. This is just my opinion and I could of course be wrong but I feel it could make the difference between someone giving up on a site before giving it a chance (I've done it many times - just thought "I can't be bothered with this and hit "back" before a page downloads) and sticking around. Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: katlaughing Date: 26 Apr 03 - 11:37 AM Yeah, Jon, I know what you mean. I do have cable, but there are still times when I will *time-out* myself waiting for some heavily-laden page to load. I just wanted Jean to know it works for some.:-) (BTW, Banjo Bonnie called me yesterday and was asking how you were. She's doing great!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: kytrad (Jean Ritchie) Date: 26 Apr 03 - 09:36 PM Jon, I'm sorry; I never meant to take anything/anyone for granted... it's just that I'm an old lady whose home has been taken over by our several small businesses- so we have to keep our computers as up-to-date as our budget will allow but cannot afford the expense nor the time to keep up will latest installations. We're lucky to have our live-in webmaster/trouble-shooter son Jon. Well, it does sound as though I have been thoughtless- never meant to be so... Thanks, Kat- I'm sure that Sally R. will be (as I am) pleased with your grandsons' choice! Jean |
Subject: RE: BS: Websites come & go- Kytrad From: GUEST,Jon Date: 26 Apr 03 - 10:16 PM No problems Jean. I didn't think of you as being thoughtless at all. I just wanted to point out that some of us stuck with older tech can have genuine difficulties when trying to access sites that may demand a little more from our kit and that I was not just being awkward for the sake of it in my first post. With regards to time taken, my comments, and your own site, I can offer my own perspective. My patience tends to be short but if I was visiting your site, I would be doing so as I "know" who you are (though my main love in folk music is Irish "dance" music and playing in sessions) and would be going there out of an interest strong enough to make me willing to wait a little longer. If on the other hand, I was looking up on Google to find some general stuff and things were slow, most likely, I would say "to hell with this", hit "back" and try the next search hit. Just one person's perspective and I wish you all the best with your site. Jon |
