I just got home from the hospital, and, after a 6 hour vigil, I finally got to see her just out of recovery.
She is sleepy and in pain, but otherwise doing just fine. The operation went well and she should be able to come home Monday.

Two day with no wife and no dog. Whatever shall I do?

Contrary to what some might tell you beer is not a food group.
Baked beans should not look black and adhere to the pan.
And dont even bother with scrambled eggs Jacqui will never forgive us if she has to clean that pot :)

I stayed a while to help Jacqui get settled in. One of the MALE nurses (she has two) was concerned that she hadn't self- medicated for pain and got a lecture on the abuse of painkillers. He tried to explain that fighting the pain causes stress and impedes healing but Her Ladyship was having none of it.

The other asked about allergies. HEH HEH His eyes started to glaze over when she reached great uncle whoever who had bleeding ulcers from a reaction to anti-inflammatories. He tried to leave but was called back for more including "I try to avoid wheat." Both exchanges were hilarious.

Needless to say she is a little dopey from the meds. The surgery went well. Jacqui has a tough day or two ahead of her. That first trip out of bed is hell. But she will be back and whipping Kendall and Seamus into shape in short order. Typical - she wanted to make sure I brought a box of candy for the medicos in Recovery who took such good care of her.

It's nice when you can get a few days out from surgery and realize how much better you feel. Because the first few hours/couple of days are no fun. Good luck to Jacqui with healing quickly (and properly this time!) and all of you caretakers try to pamper her when she'll let you.

Thanks very much for the update. Please remember that I'm just under 2 hours away- less if I'm visiting me mum's place in Brunswich. Glad to pitch in, deliver food, supply yarn, unlock the cellar door...and yes, pain management is not the same as drug abuse and can help tremendously in the healing process.

Pain medication, taken for pain, isn't abuse. It also helps you heal because you feel better and move more. (I took the stuff for my post-surgical physical therapy just because, even though I didn't think I needed it, my exercises went much easier and I tried harder. At the very least, you'll make everybody else feel better.

I'd come visit you in hospital, but I can't deny that what I've got is a cold, and you don't need one of them.

You gotta love Firefox! My power just went off for a second - computer down, TV off and all the clocks flashing. Thought I'd lost the above message, but Firefox asked "Do you want to restore session?" I did, and there was my message!

Do what the nurses and doctors tell you, and take the pain drugs for us. You won't get any after a while anyway. We love you.

Jacqui managed to down some orange ice today and to not insult the chaplain who came to check in on her immortal soul. Once the anesthesiologist gives the OK to stop the Lidocaine drip, she will be moved out of the ICU and into a regular room where she will have her own phone and a laptop.

She is worried about the Captain. And asked several times about this thread. She is still looking forward to her first trip out of bed (OUCH!). Also concerned that her hair is a fright - it isn't. All good signs.

Seamus is safely asleep on your dog bed. No bones for him!

Just spoke with Her Ladyship. She is ready to come home. Some ditzy night nurse woke her at midnight to introduce herself. The lunch lady had an attitude and Jacqui had to suggest where she might put the tray. When the hospital makes you cranky it is a sure sign that you are healing.

Wonder if Kendall will refill her with high test?????

Hi all - got home about half an hour ago to a very happy dog and a very solicitous husband.

I had to share a room last night with an elderly lady who kept her TV in the news channel all morning while she read her book and then had a lovely bout of the runs on a comode about five feet away from me (sound effects included) about twenty minutes before lunch! I am SO glad to be home!

I'm lightheaded from the painkillers, which only just seem to take the edge off the discomfort of the drain that is still in. Hopefully that will come out on Thursday and make life a lot easier.

Thanks for all your good wishes. Now I have to be really good for the next few weeks and make sure the repair works this time. I hope to get info from the surgeon on Thursday on exactly what is allowed and when and will follow his instructions to the letter. I don't like this being an invalid bit - it really makes it difficult to be totally bossy when all and sundry are doing it to me!

I'm off for a rest as soon as I've sent an email to my kids with a photo so that they can see I'm home and upright.

Now he'll get all embarrassed, but Kendall is looking after me way beyond the call of duty. I'm very weak, dizzy and slightly nauseous from the painkillers (that's why I hate them so much) and can do very little without assistance. He's waiting on me hand a foot (and everywhere in between as well). Mary's coming in this morning to give him a break so that will help.

Right now I'm off for another rest - too much energy being used right now.

My daughter had surgery in May, requiring three days in the hospital. The process, whether you're going through it or watching it, is interesting to watch (in hindsight!) You do feel like death warmed over for the first couple of days, and that white button is so helpful. But she would have stayed in bed, keeping herself at that level of discomfort, if I hadn't insisted that she get up and walk around the halls a little that second evening, and the third day we had her doing laps. With each walk I could see the anesthesia clearing out a little more. (She had her spleen removed, due to spherocytosis, and was under similar instructions not to lift ANYTHING for several weeks). The folks down at her summer job at Dairy Queen were so good--she had the laparoscopic surgery on a Monday and was back at work on Saturday. They had her handle cash only, not even lifting food to hand it over the counter.

I'm back in bed and on a liquid diet right now - reaction to Vicodin. Should have known better than to let them talk me into anything stronger than Tylenol (paracetamol). The medicos think I'm just trying to be tough when I say that I try to avoid drugs of any kind but it ain't fun when you get to the point of feeling you're going to throw up with staples in a stomach wound!

Ah well, lots of rest today and I'll hopefully feel stronger tomorrow.

There are a number of those medications members of our family don't tolerate, so we're careful in approaching all of them. The surgery I mentioned earlier, my daughter got hives from the hydrocodone. She stuck with strong doses of ibuprophen after that and was fine.

I wouldn't let them give her Versed before that or the dental surgery she had later. It gives me a hangover like nothing else. Why test it on her to see if she's laid equally low, if we can avoid it?

In '99 I was having some pain and to check it out I was admitted to a hospital. I had already had several heart surgeries at that point, but oddly enough had never been exposed to Versed which anymore is the drug of choice for pain. All I remember was going to a room. As folks who were on Mudcat back then will recall, the next thing I knew, 6 days had passed and I woke up in a different hospital on a vent after having an aortic dissecting aneurysm. That's what killed John Ritter. Luckily mine "only" ran from the femoral arteries to the aortic arch stopping 2 inches short of the heart.....Ritter's didn't. Its non repairable and non operable.

What had been the acute cause of this was skyrocketing blood pressure from the Versed. Also, the Versed had the exact opposite of the "desired effect." After the first shot I didn't become calm with less pain, I became agitated and restless.....so they gave me more! My vital signs went crazy and I became extremely violent and combative to the point of being restrained. One Doc came out and told Karen what was going on and asked if I were a violent person. Several other friends had come to the hospital and along with Karen assured him I was not. I was Life Flighted to a major trauma center in Columbus (where Karen now works oddly enough) and woke up wondering what the hell and where the hell and why was on on a damned Vent!

Outside of the fact I lived and am here with my torn up aorta to tell the tale, the best thing to happen was the effect it had on Mudcat. May of '99 we were a community but still mostly new to each other and the net. Odd though it may seem, my problems were a turning point of sorts where the group came together forming with the camaraderie which we all have enjoyed over the years.   I'm not taking credit for that obviously, I was just the catalytic agent, but it was a huge step in the development of this joint.

Versed? Yeah......I'd have settled for a hangover(;<))

Whoa! Makes my reactions seem mild.

It's interesting to note how the medicos seem to think that you are being dramatic when you tell them what allergies and intolerances you have and what various medications do to you.

I got their attention a bit when the large surgical dressing was taken off and the skin had blistered where the adhesive had been. Likewise when I broke out in hives about half an hour after eating one small piece of stewed tomato - luckily that one small piece was all that my stomach would let me have.

They just want to keep feeding pain meds, even though I was telling them that I really didn't have much pain, more discomfort from the fact that the girdle they used hadn't really been placed well.

I had a low resting pulse rate, good low blood pressure, almost in the athlete's class and high oxygen sats. Surely that should be telling them that what I am doing with my system is working, whatever their own theories might be.

I know what you mean, Jacqui. When I was being scheduled for a hernia repair I told the surgeon that 30 years before I'd had the same hernia done and that I was allergic to each of the pain meds they gave me; I told him they ended up giving me only tylenol.

The surgeon smiled. Medications are SO much better now, she said.

Right. I was supposed to be in just overnight- ended up being in there three days because everything they gave me I reacted badly to.

At one point, the surgeon said in a kind of miffed tone, Well, obviously you aren't used to narcotics.

Told her that if I were, I'd have a different kind of problem.

My wife's allergic to adhesive and she gets VERY VERY vocal about it. So much so that it's easier to use something else, so the medicos do.

She might have only one functioning vocal cord and not be able to yell, but she can still strip paint right off the wall when she wants to. So rather than repaint....

An allergic reaction to adhesive plasters must be common as I have it too. My physio noticed it years ago when she strapped my ankle & she told me to always inform doctors in future. The remedy is to use Micropore tape underneath, but maybe this is something only physios know!

It took a few years and many bouts with hives or worse for my docs to finally put a big RED label on the front of my chart that says "High Sensitivity to drugs!"

I also have to use paper tape. All sulfa-based drugs make me itch like crazy, so they had to get creative when finding something for high blood pressure as the favs. all have some sulfa derivative. So, I am on "edecrin" aka ethacrynic acid. Now, the docs call me, I kid you not, to find out where I get mine as there is only one pharmacy that still carries it, it is such an old drug, and the docs need it for other patients!

I got dizzy and stuff on vicodin but what they didn't warn me about was getting constipated from it! Just try that after your chest has been cracked open and they've sent you home. Afraid to strain thinking your staples might pop out, never mind the pain it caused! Ugh. I cannot believe folks willingly look for this drug to use for pleasure!

The constipation isn't just a problem of Vicodin, but almost all pain meds. Just like certain meds will give a lot of women yeast infections (I know, gross).
I can relate, kat. I was on Vicodin for a herniated disc, barely able to walk, let alone "strain" and constipated all at the same time. And then the doctor tells me if I shit my pants to call 911. I know it has something to do with the disc material shifting around and compressing things and the bad stuff that results from that, but at first I thought that was actually going to happen. I was afraid to leave the bathroom!

Oh, geez, Becca! I called Little Neophyte, who happens to be a nutritionist. Very little food was appetizing at the time, but I was able to get down a smoothie for breakfast every day. She advised me to add dried figs, not the dark kind, to it and voila! Now, more than two years later, I have found fish oil capsules would have worked, too!

I was VERY glad to have Vicodin when I had a pinched nerve in my neck....it simply allowed me to stop hurting and get to sleep. It did NOT cause constipation...if anything, a bit the opposite.
I can take sulpha, any antibiotic they have, use any kind of adhesive tape, and eat any kind of food which *I* care about. I don't even suffer from pollen allergies!

I have only one known allergy, and that IS a nuisance...to most types of Rosewood dust. So, as a woodworker, I can't mess with Cocobolo.

I'm beginning to wonder what the relationship is of all these allergies people seem to have is to modern life & the environment. It 'feels' like there are way more than there used to be.

A few years back, after my hysterectomy, I was constipated for a couple of days and waiting for my daughter to get a scrip for a suppository from the GP to deal with it.

I finally got too desperate to go and, necessity being the mother of invention, started trying to think about what might do the same job in the absence of the suppositories. Cod liver oil capsules work amazingly well! The gelatine capsules melt with body heat and then the oil just greases the - well, you know. Saved me the cost of the prescription and added another little bit of useful info that has been passed on to others since.

Kendall had the same problem a bit later and I told him what had worked - at this time we were separated by the Big Pond. He seemed a little doubtful about it but the next morning, at work, I got an email which said "I tried the cod liver oil at nine o'clock last night. At eleven o'clock I had a major bowel movement. I should have got out of bed first." Total collapse of me and my workmates wondering what was making me laugh so much.
