In the notes section of this quite fascinating book Archie Green and all reflect on the idea of FIELD RECORDINGS. They say the tapes I made of Paul Durst in 1961 are just about the only ones ever made of a Wobbly songster -- except Harry Haywire Mac McClintock's recording an interview and singing his songs for Sam Eskin. I'd been telling folks about these old tapes I made of Paul for close to 50 years now---and it feels real good for some notice to be made of Paul, his songs---but mainly his life.

Archie Green, if you're out there, thanks so much!!

Art Thieme

The Utah Phillips connection is that he wrote the "Afterword" section of the book.

THE BIG RED SONGBOOK, edited and with notes by Archie Green, David Roediger, Franklin Rosemont, and Salvatore Salerno. Chicago: Charles H. Kerr, 2007. 546pp., 250+ IWW songs, lyrics only. A comprehensive collection of the songs from every edition of the LITTLE RED SONGBOOK since its 1909 inception, plus many songs and poems gathered from IWW publications. Illustrated with vintage IWW graphics and photos. Also includes a section on parodies, songwriters' reminiscences, essays by the editors and others, and more. Discography by Adam Machado. Cloth, issued without dust jacket, $36.00; paper edition, $24.00

If a half-dozen or so Mudcatters are interested, CAMSCO can supply it at a substantial discount ($19.20 soft cover /$28.80 hard cover). It's an indispensible reference if you're interested in labor /protest songs. \

So I was spamed this morning by Amazon.com, and they are plugging "The Big Red Songbook," by Utah Phillips. I couldn't find out much about it on the Amazon site. I wondered if this was new, and was in the works before his death, or...

Does anyone know much about it?
