Subject: RE: Review: Naval Ballads and Nursery Rhymes From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 11 Aug 08 - 09:06 PM As would I; but there are so many books that one needs to refer to if serious work is to be done, and there is always the rent to pay. If it's something I'll need to consult frequently, I'll print it out: that's usually cheaper than buying at the 'antiquarian' prices charged by so many dealers for items they think ought to be expensive because they appear to be rare. I've paid those inflated prices often enough, and I don't regret it; but if there's a cheaper alternative then sometimes it must be taken. |
Subject: RE: Review: Naval Ballads and Nursery Rhymes From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 11 Aug 08 - 08:19 PM Yes, downloadable anywhere, I guess, but I prefer books to pdf. I have had the Halliwell Nursery Rhymes on disc for some time, and have used the online Naval Ballads a couple of times, but I'll take a book anytime! |
Subject: RE: Review: Naval Ballads and Nursery Rhymes From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 11 Aug 08 - 08:09 PM I meant that GB has a downloadable pdf copy of the book. Is it not available to users in Canada? Usually, if it's visible to UK users, you should be able to get it too. A lot of out-of-copyright UK material at Google Books is reserved for US users only, of course, and I've complained at great and tedious length about that in the past; but this seems to be an honourable exception. |
Subject: RE: Review: Naval Ballads and Nursery Rhymes From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 11 Aug 08 - 07:46 PM The site linked by Malcolm Douglas has a box with "Buy this book from..." Abebooks, Alibris, Barnes and Noble, Amazon. I went to Abebooks, and found the Halliwell book at Quartermelon, Stratford Books, etc., in the UK. Prices vary widely! One says Kessinger prints on demand. At random from the Kessinger catalog I picked Shelley, "In defence of poetry..." In Abebooks, The Kessinger reprint showed up at several English booksellers, inc. Books2Anywhere.com, Quartermelon and TheBookCom. I would go to Abebooks or Alibris, and find a seller in the UK and look for the lowest price. For some titles, prices were lower for some editions other than Kessinger reprints. |
Subject: RE: Review: Naval Ballads and Nursery Rhymes From: Steve Gardham Date: 11 Aug 08 - 07:25 PM Cheers, everybody. Will do. See some of you at Whitby hopefully. |
Subject: RE: Review: Naval Ballads and Nursery Rhymes From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 11 Aug 08 - 07:04 PM Available (even to users outside the USA, for a wonder) from Google Books: http://books.google.com/books?id=YC3KLLL8S_kC. Early Naval Ballads, Old Hobson, and Nursery Rhymes of England. |
Subject: RE: Review: Naval Ballads and Nursery Rhymes From: Les from Hull Date: 11 Aug 08 - 06:06 PM Sorry Steve the buffer is to short but type in Early Naval Ballads of England in the Amazon UK search thingy and you'll get several offers from £11.66 upwards. I get plenty of books and CDs this way and I've not had a problem yet. |
Subject: RE: Review: Naval Ballads and Nursery Rhymes From: Les from Hull Date: 11 Aug 08 - 06:01 PM It looks like they sell through Amazon, and if you check the Amazon UK site it comes up like this (click here) |
Subject: RE: Review: Naval Ballads and Nursery Rhymes From: Steve Gardham Date: 11 Aug 08 - 04:25 PM Q, Is this the company on Ebay who are currently offering just about half of everything ever published in English? If so it seems they only want to sell their stuff in the States. I'd certainly be interested in Halliwell if it was available this side of the pond. |
Subject: Review: Naval Ballads and Nursery Rhymes From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 11 Aug 08 - 02:04 PM I ordered the reprint, J. O. Halliwell, "The Early Naval Ballads of England," and was surprised to find his complete "The Nursery Rhymes of England," 1842, 192pp., bound into the volume- not a mention on the cover of this paperback. I have referred often to this book of nursery rhymes, poems and tales which often appear in shortened versions in Mother Goose, etc. The naval ballads, first printed for the Percy Society, include some from manuscripts, including the earliest known, from a MS of the time of Henry VI (posted recently). This is a real bargain at $22 from amazon.ca. Printed by Kessinger Publishing, Legacy Reprints. Kessinger has a long list of reprints of old books, from all fields, including music, at Kessinger Reprints Included is the old favorite from Robbins, American Cowboy Songs, with chords, to studies of music theory and church and classical music and composers. Insert music in Search, and get a list with 766 titles. |
