Talk about a mountain out of a molehill:

Time magazine story

Actress Salma Hayek has received flack for breastfeeding another womans baby. Nevermind that both the mother and baby were starving. I think she deserves a pat on the back for doing the right thing. Where do these taboos come from anyway? How silly can people be. When you find a starving child you feed it. End of story.

Well she ought to feed BABIES, then, not flack. :~)

I refer her critics to Mowgli.

Is she receiving flak? The Time story is supportive of her, although it does mention "online reactions" that are "squeamish" - which does not necessarily equate with disapproving.

She is receiving some flak; I didn't mean to imply that it was Time creating the flack, if that's what you inferred from my post.

Thanks for sharing the story, Wesley. It's a beautiful image and it is wonderful that she could do this.

I wouldn't have hesitated a moment in her place. And it is great that she is such a high-profile nursing mother, that her child is a year old and still nursing, all of these things are important messages.

I nursed both of mine until they were about 2 1/2. After the first year or so it drops back to just a few times a day, generally morning, naptime, and bedtime, you're not the sole source of food. But nursing into the toddler years does protect your children, and being able to nurse another child won't deprive her own child who should now be able to compensate on this occasion with another helping of oatmeal.

I don't think the reaction has been because she was breastfeeding - it was that she was breastfeeding someone elses child. That is not as common and I think people are just reacting because they have not heard of it before. I would not demean anyone who is ignorant of the facts. What she did was help educate people, and the natural reaction is a healthy sign that people are discussing this and it brings more attention to the issue of hunger.

I suspect that throughout time this process of "cross nursing" has always been part of the human framework. What nursing mother HASN'T been somewhere without her child, say, in a grocery store, heard another infant start the familiar hunger cry, and had to press her forearms against her nipples to suppress the tingle of a letdown? We're wired to feed babies. If you nursed for a long time that tingle still happens even long after the nursing has stopped.

Anybody ever heard of the term "Wet-Nurse" - the practice used to be quite common and sought after for a number of very good, logical reasons.

My goodness what is the world coming to ... and another persons baby. Well I am no doctor but I would think mothers milk is the same regardless of the woman ya know.   Any act of kindness anymore is met with some type of rock throwing ...

I really think the press or whatever that does the criticism thinks breasts are just for looking at ... the whole world is nuts. It is like OH MY GOSH she is breast feeding her baby in public ... So what. In this world there is nothing as important as a baby. Kids are all we have in this life that makes any sense to me

Good grief what has this world come to

Good Grief

Mother's milk is certainly NOT the same regardless of the woman, but it is generally good wholesome food for human infants in any case, assuming the mother is relatively healthy and toxin-free.

Since I have never heard of Salma Hayek, I did a Google image search.

Looks like most of the pictures have her breasts prominently dislayed.

This is just a publicity stunt. It worked.

"This is just a publicity stunt. It worked. "

It is, and it should be.

If you are inferring she did this for her own gain, I think you are dead wrong. She was there in her role as an ambassador for UNICEF. If a celebrity can use their status to make positive change and help people, they deserve credit. It is a shame that cynical folks always look for the negative. No wonder the world is fucked up.

I don't know who said it, but a famous actress said "bad publicity is better than none".

Actually, I think she is a nice looking lady. Never heard of her before this PR trick. Hope she uses it to good advantage. Nothing wrong with hepling herself, the poor, the people of her country, her parents, et al...

No PDQ, it seems you are the one putting a spin on things. You are to cynical!! Why is it that whenever anyone puts a question to you you have to blame them for "spinning"? Get some mirrors!!

You finally hit the nail on the head in your last sentence - she IS helping others in addition to herself. She did not take the job with UNICEF because she needed publicity. I realize you do not know who she is, but she is not starving for movie roles or business. This was not a publicity stunt to promote a film.

pdq is demonstrating, yet again, how despicable his/her views are. And I won't be rethinking that position, I can assure you.

Of course she is using her celebrity, pdq. That is what decent folks of celebrity do. They realize that their celebrity will bring attention to an issue. She could just do the Paris Hilton thing..... then I suppose you wouldn't attack. There are plenty of celebrities who do distasteful things to get attention. Imagine the gall of this Hayek woman .... feeding a starving child .... who does she think she is????????

Selma Hayek, in this one action, has gone from a movie person to a great role model as far as I am concerned. Good for her, and shame on those that would snipe at her. And while you are at it, pdq, instead of looking at her breasts, take a look at the face of the child and the mother. But I guess if you did you would just see lazy people trying to undermine what's right in your head.

Big Mick
I don't think PDQ is a bad person, he is just not thinking through this one. Too many of the celebrities do destructive things for publicity and it can be easy for a person to label everything a celebrity does as "publicity stunt"

This was a wonderful act by her and I thank God for celebrities like her that use their status for good

I think PDQ was giving a typical knee jerk reaction like normally occurs with a Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction. this is far from that case.

I never like Angelina Jole, now she is one of my favourite celebrities, she went from a strange disturbed person to someone that really goes out of her way to use her status for good. God Bless any of them that will do that

If she did not want you to look at her tits, she would not put them on display so much. Google her with "images" search. See what I saw.

She may be a fine peson but she needs to decide if she is "cheesecake" or Mother Teresa.

I think it is too easy to call her a "celebrity".   Anyone who has seen "Frida" knows that she is a skilled actress. Watch her on "30 Rock" while you can - she is playing a wonderful role as Alec Baldwin's girlfriend.

Harry Chapin was a wonderful musician who used his fame for good. He would always say that he would do a concert one night for himself and the next night the concert was for the other guy.   He cared about his career but he also spent considerable time helping others.   Selma Hayek is following in the footsteps of artists like him - and Danny Kaye who did an incredible job of promoting UNICEF and their programs. Now Selma Hayek is working in a similar role with UNICEF.

It would have been easy to turn the camera off when she was breastfeeding, but I truly believe she knew that seeing the images would get people talking about a situation (in Sierra Leone) as well as breastfeeding - subjects that are not glamorous newspieces.

The fact that pdq never heard of Selma Hayek before says as much about his lack of awareness as anything else. And of course, that's not the only aspect of he's revealed to us here that smacks of ignorance.

The bond between mother and infant while breastfeeding is pretty intimate. I was interested to read that various organizations that promote and support breastfeeding in general, and also support providing one woman's breast milk to another woman's child ("crossfeeding"), are unanimous in emphasizing that they assume that a pump and a bottle be involved when such crossfeeding takes place. No one wants to endorse actual physical contact between lactating women and babies not their own.

I've got to think that racism is an additional factor in some people's negative reaction to this. Not only did Ms Hayek feed someone else's baby; she was feeding a black baby!

Of course when the shoe was on the other foot (bad metaphor, I know), society as a whole competely endorsed the nursing of white babies by black slave/servant wetnurses. If society-as-a-whole is feeling some guilt about that particular aspect of the past, it's probably a good thing ~ but it should not blind us to the virtue and practicality of this wholly humanitarian incident.

The usual suspects must be slipping.

BTW, I am libertarian more than conservative, and I have no problem with this lady using all her assets to whatever advantage she wants. That is a libertarian concept, I believe.

For those folks who see no humor in this thread, just remember: "wherever you go, well, there you are".

That initial photo that ran on the Time website, with her comfortably seated and the child nursing has now been replaced by a screen shot with her burping the child. Looks like they buckled under to those who have to grouse about something.

The only one entitled to actually say anything about this episode, positive or negative, is the child's mother. That brief clip didn't say anything about her ability to feed her child or if she was even there. But let's see if the tabloids can come up with some case for turning this event into something other than a beautiful moment.

I think what she did was quite wonderful. I am always for using a scarf or something for modesty, but some people are more comfortable than others. Her own baby was weaning she said and is not going to come up short. I would be concerned about germs, anywhere, but especially in a very depressed area, but that would be my only concern. I am sure it will all be OK. I think there probably are taboos in many areas of this that we don't understand, but break through them and go straight to the charitable act...

I wondered about the fact that the picture just showed her holding, or burping the baby. It has to take a small, sad mind to take offense at the sight of a baby nursing. I'm not about to hold it against all the mothers who conceal the process carefully, considering all the conditioning and social pressure they've grown up with. I know just one young mother lately who, at least around home with family and friends, nurses quite openly. I can't imagine anyone who knows her thinking of her as a crude or undesireable person.

Anyhow, "good on you", Selma Hayek.

Selma Hayek did her acting and turned to producing, probably because it gives her more time with her baby. She produces the comedy drama Ugly Betty. A quite funny exposé of the whole size zero, maybe its mabelline, fashionista culture.

She don't need no stinking publicity. She is just good people.

This link goes there. The child she is patting is not the same child she is nursing. A lot of bits were edited together on that clip.

I'd say it is more likely to be a social and economic divide. It has been known and referred to across cultures and across the years. I first read about it in English literature. I've read of it referred to in high courts in China. The American version may have been largely racial, but it isn't the only version.

PG got there first but I was thinking the same thought. If the races had been reversed or had both women been of the same race, there probably would not have been the same uproar.

Having been the father of a breastfed child, it was a pleasure to watch and mother and child seemed to enjoy themselves, too. It felt good for all concerned, no one was harmed and it made a point about social acceptance. As a PR moment, it had all the right elements, including controversy.

I've done a few searches, but I have not found the "public outrage" that everyone is claiming is occuring.   People in this forum seem to indicate that people are upset that she was breastfeeding - but the ONLY question I see being raised in the media is the QUESTION of whether it is okay to breastfeed someone elses child. I have not seen anyone playing up a racial angle or questioning the simple act of breastfeeding. Except here on Mudcat of course.   Maybe we are creating issues that do not exist?

Frankly, there is nothing wrong with asking the QUESTION. While Mudcat seems to be filled with folks that know everything, the rest of the world sometimes questions things they are not familar with - and - here is a newsflash - it can often lead to greater understanding of situations that are foreign to their world. I don't wish to shock anyone here, but there are people who are unfamiliar with the situation in Sierra Leone and there are also people who do not know a lot about breastfeeding. While many of us feel superior because we are enlightened, I question the wisdom of posting messages that make the rest of the world seem stupid simply because they do not have the experience with the subject.

At the same time, we have people like PDQ who are posting messages with one hand while searching the internet to get a look at Salma Hayek's rack.   It seems that we have a few Puritans who would rather see her tie those puppies down and ignore her own beauty. Sounds like it traces back to bad toliet training.

Well, obviously they have more than one purpose, one of which is for male oggling..and she is an exceptionally beautiful woman. I think if an average woman had done the same thing there would be less reaction, because people do ogle when given the opportunity, and then they feel guilty, and then people try to make them feel that is not normal and the only possible function is that of lactation.

Now, really..why is every woman practically on TV, fashionable or not, attractive or not, displaying her charms? Is it because she is lactating? Probably not. What about half-dressed teenagers? This is a multi-purposed organ or two, which is why there is so much fuss.

So modesty is recommended, while still allowing nursing to go on. Men should be respectful of a woman's privacy and women should be respectful of the discomfort that this can cause and try to be modest when they can be. But the health of the babies must be the priority. mg

Pointing out that she poses for sexy, beautiful pictures does not indicate that she is something other than a good person. Now I know in your twisted, conservative mind beauty is equated with evil, sexiness means that this person must have an agenda to take advantage of poor unsuspecting males, enticing them into compromising situations to where they just cannot help themselves .... the world should be protected against these immoral vixens, right?????? They have breasts and they don't hide them, the shameless hussies. Why, they even feed starving children with them so the kid can have some nourishment, and then use their celebrity to emphasize the starvation problems, the no-good, wanton seductresses.. Tell you what, I think we should lock them all in your bedroom, chained to the bed and make them look at the shrine, candles and all, that you have created for them....... that'll fix 'em.

What a strange, strange world we live in! Breastfeeding is viewed by some as unnatural or even vulgar. To nurture a child is surely a most natural act and to nurture the child of another in need, an act of kindness and empathy. Those who would find fault with such an act must be of a small mind indeed!

Mick - I think you hit the nail on the head. Some people feel threatened by beauty. The whole image of the "dumb blonde" was developed so that men would not feel threatened by beauty AND brains. Some sort of psychological way of being superior.   PDQ is showing the same traits - he has shown a nearly psychotic need to post pictures of her in sexy poses as if that will somehow validate his point. People like PDQ can't see beyond the skin and is threatened that someone is doing good in the world and that makes them less of a person. Simple attacks, but a defense that has been used for ages.

Luckily, they continue to speak - and expose their own flaws.

Notice how PDQ has ignored posting photos of Hayek as Frida. Notice how he ignores the fact that she continues to pursue low-budget films that have real scripts instead of only starring in summer blockbuster films.   Notice how he fails to recongize her acting awards. Notice how he fails to mention her successful production company. Notice how he fails to mention her awards for directing.   Notice how he fails to recognize her charity work.   For people like PDQ, she ONLY has a nice rack.

Should they hide them? Well, that is what a whole lot of at least northern societies have done...not hide while nursing but cover if possible. Flash them to every stranger on the bus if you are a nubile teenager? No, hide them.

Show them to the general public (I am not talking about nursing here..just dress standards)..no. To a particular someone, sure. To dress up at a private dance..sure...

But to have every psychotic or alcoholic or perverted or just lonely man (or woman) have to be uncomfortable, avoid staring, or add to their already great unmet needs, no. I think it is taunting men, I think the younger ones don't realize what they are doing, I think a whole lot of people are a lot too coy and passive aggressive about this..I can dress however I damn well choose and tough if it makes others uncomfortable...

Sometimes it is quite unattractive, although they certainly have as much right as the attractive ones..which I think is counteracted by a need to dress in a responsible manner...shows of display should be selective..not broadcast..I got really annoyed at that white house press secretary..not scott mcclellan..cover up and put smocks, burkas, big t shirts on your daughters. This is certainly not a new concept. mg

And yes they wear swimsuits and pose for big magazines in sexy dress. Ya know what that is their job ... just like we all have a job. And some are self centred- and all about themselves -, and others are as beautiful inside as they are outside.

You know, sort of lost in this whole discussion is one of the reasons she did this, that is the men of that country insisting their women quit nursing so that they may have sex with them.

So, male hormones + taboo = starving children.

Maybe not in the particular instance of the newborn Hayek fed, but the article did note that is why women there do not nurse as long as their children may need and one would assume they don't have a ready supply of formula with which to replace mother's milk.

As I said, using your God-given assets to good advantage is just fine. The response by people on this thread to that basic assertion is hysterical.

Only observation about "the incident" is that she should have gone inside a tent (or whatever was there). A lady pulling her boobs out in public, for any reason, is an unusual event and will get her attention. As an actress, she snows that.

Actually, I can almost..almost..sympathise with PDQ regarding part of this exchange. This remark, earlier on, just isn't that malevolent:
"Actually, I think she is a nice looking lady. Never heard of her before this PR trick. Hope she uses it to good advantage. Nothing wrong with hepling herself, the poor, the people of her country, her parents, et al...

And PDQ has given every indication of grinning and pulling chains, without taking a bunch of this at all seriously.

But there is a grating attitude, and an inability to grasp the whole point of Hayek's action, relected in these lines, to say the least:
"she needs to decide if she is "cheesecake" or Mother Teresa"
"she should have gone inside a tent"
Others here have beaten me to responding to them appropriately.

Truth be, at times I've just felt a little sad for PDQ. PDQ, has it ever occurred to you for a moment that very few people react quite so negatively to quite so many things in this world?

So Theresa lifts up one side of her sweater and holds the baby to her breast. Nothing showing except a bit of bare skin.

Everybody in the room noticed, of course; nobody commented, everybody averted their eyes a bit to give Theresa and the baby a bit of privacy (although there wasn't anything much to see), and the meeting proceeded as usual.

No sweat. No comments, then or afterward. Nobody had a hissy-fit.

And for those preoccupied with Salma's admittedly fabulous breasts, again, the breast-feeding footage, showed not as much as a postage stamps worth of flesh.

Anyway, she's obviously an amazingly attractive woman, who as we can see full well has long ago "been there and done that", and is so *desperate* to promote herself that she *chooses* to work *behind* the camera these days...

So, as well as being a Mum, and doing good grounded humanitarian stuff, that needs to be done. The fact that she also happens to be gorgeous and bloody sexy is kinda neither here nor there. Nor are the standard publicity photos that every sleb has taken.

But I sure don't think she needs to get her tits out to feed black babies, in order to promote herself...

Anyway's I think most folks get it.

I've always personally liked her lots, as an image of a smart, strong, self-possessed, sexy woman. With a fantastic example of a very non-anorexic/classically 'feminine' body, who really is on top of her game in an industry which so often chews up and spits out women.

Good on her, for risking the bad publicity which she has, in doing something so obviously controversial - for those reasons she was already there to promote.
And more power to her elbow. It seems a fairly cut and dried case to me.

Back about 30 years I was working as a nurse in a small hospital. I remember a woman who had to have an operation who arrived with her young baby and a friend with her baby. For a day or two the friend breast-fed both babies. Everyone was happy. Mothers, babies, nursing staff -- we had little time to feed extra babies or even prepare and warm bottles.
Beforehand some staff members were a little surprised. Some thought it strange and unnatural. There were comments like, "I could never do that" and ,"What's wrong with using bottles for a few days?" They changed thier minds when it worked so well.
Cheers, Joy

My Ex sponsors a a "Bug Day" twice a year where numerous and assorted insects are caught, roasted, sauted, stewed or friccasseed then consumed. It is attended with relish by, among others, my son. I never participated because I'm too squeamish, but that doesn't mean I think it is wrong or unsanitary or...something.

If any number of other people were posting what PDQ is posting to this particular thread, I suspect many would respond with humor instead of rancor. PDQ does not need, warrant, or probably want me defending him. I'm just making an observation. Seems to me like he is having fun yanking chains....and it is kinda funny to "watch."

There are, by the way, reasons to exercise some caution regarding cross feeding in this day and age that would warrant organizations that promote breast feeding and milk donation to refrain from endorsing direct cross feeding, issues of potential liability being a major one. Medications and a number of drugs can be passed through breast milk. I'm guessing a number of pathogens can also. The immunity passed to an infant through breast milk likely presupposes some genetic resistance within a population to common regional pathogens. (I don't know this, I'm simply speculating.) Consider that before you think disparaging thoughts about these organizations. They have to be cautious.

Janie brings up some good points.

I have a question:

Would Salma Hayek, the daughter of a wealthy oil man and his wife, a trained opera singer, allow her infant to be breast-fed by an African native whom she had never seen before? What if the unknown woman started breast feeding Salma's infant without permission? In public?

PDQ - did you read the article about why she did that? It wasn't like she plucked a child at random to feed. The mother could not produce breast milk, Salma could. End of story and end of your dufus logic.

Yes if the baby was starving. Of course. She would worry about germs. She might have to break some unconscious taboos, but of course. mg

I know!
FFS, why didn't that African Mum just crack open a pot of yummy Nescafe....

Jeez, you'd think there was an actual legitimate humanitarian reason why glamorous celeb Mums, might want to get their big milky titties out on camera like this!!

Nescafe, btw, is a 'bad' word for starving African babies.
Look it up. The kind of big celeb 'noise' that Salma is making, is much, much needed..

I'd happily lance a vein in order to save the life of someone I loved.
In fact it's not been unknown for starving Mothers to do this in order to save the life of a starving infant -

- but *only* if they are certain that the blood has been through a sufficient amount of double-blind rigorous scientific trials in a laboratory first, of course!

Come off it man...
Some context please!

For those who do not undestand. The hostility being shown has nothing to do with what I said on this thread,

I have had disagreements with these people a few times over the years and they are taking this as an oportunity to show their hostility. It comes from their inability to deal with someone who has opinions that differ from theirs.

The first BS thread I posted to 6 years ago had the "Ron and Don" show and they took turns doing the same things they are doing now.

Sorry to those who the mean-spirited displays "bad theater", but I am only responsible for what I said, not for what other say I said.

And have a nice day. I will.

Sorry PDQ, my memory does not recall a six year old discussion, nor do I recall having any disagreements with you in other threads.   I am reacting to the "bad theater" that you have been showing on this single thread.

I love how people use the excuse "inability to deal with someone who has opinions that differ from theirs." That pithy excuse is only thrown out when an opinion gets challenged and the individual can no longer see the logic of their original position and their ego will not allow them to admit it.

PDQ, you have simply stated that you felt that Salma Hayek was seeking publicity for herself. When challenged, you kept posting pictures of her in provactive poses - as if that would justify your position. When shown that it does not, you know resort to this tactic. Shame on you.

You can think whatever you like, your posts show that. Don't expect others to embrace your simplistic ideas.

Stilly River Sage's link at 06:32 PM shows the breastfeeding and the comments Salma Hayek made at the time. Nothing offensive or provocative to anyone except to certain males who are ashamed of the lewd feelings that arise in them at the sight. I'm sorry for your sake, pdq, that I buy breast cancer postage stamps; they clearly show the outline of a breast, you konw. Might be too much for you. :) (Go yank some other chains, p.)

By the way, Salma Hayek is Indian, is she not? Considering that, is it more or less controversial that she nursed a black baby? :)

". . . their inability to deal with someone who has opinions that differ from theirs."

I—and I'm sure Ron as well—am perfectly willing to change my opinion if someone offers me a rational, solidly based argument for doing so. And I have, indeed, done so.

And if there is any attack involved, PDQ, it's not against you as a person, it's against your rather sleazy put-down of a woman who, in addition to doing a generous act per se, is concerned with the welfare of others and who is willing to undergo whatever flak comes her way in order to call attention to a major world problem. Publicity stunt? Maybe so. But she doesn't need the publicity. The cause she is calling attention to does.

Your attack on her credibility is uncalled for.

Don Firth

pdq shows time and again his ability to use obfuscation and selective memory to alibi his actions. First he makes comments that draw fire (it is a forum, laddie, that's what happens) and then he spends a lot of time and smoke, to try and alibi or rewrite his words. Folks here are pretty observant and figure it out quickly. This isn't about old arguments as much as it is about a consistent view of the things pdq espouses. He has been consistent over the length of his time here that folks simply have him pegged, IMO.
