here are five horses to back each way in todays grand national.
Cerium, character building,Arbor Supreme,State of play,Snowy morning, icant guarantee any of them will win but they are my choices, based on the following stats.
9 to 10 year olds often win this race, irish trained horses do well, horses under 11 stone do wellhorse beteween 10 and 25 to one do well, but an exception is made for cerium, cerium is 50 to one but came fith last year, despite being incapacitated.

I'd agree with State of Play - still available at 18/1 in some places.

well one horse placed 16 to4,so if i had spent five pounds,50 cent each way on each horse,I would have lost 2 .50.
so i only lost half of my money, moral only ever bet what you can afford to lose, fortunately I had the winner of another race at 3 TO 1

Strange thing about gamblers they only let you know about their winnings not their losses.

Right, Al. Why, I have won over £400 on the National Lottery ~~ all in £10s for 3 numbers except for one glorious 4 #s 6 months ago — £37! So there. And how many tickets have I bought over the years. Now, I'm glad you asked me that...

My father, who had done Littlewood's Pools all his life, had his first win since 1937 the week he died.

ALAN, I have just stated what my losses were on the grand national [half my stake]
the funny thing is that people who drink alcohol, dont calculate their losses when they piss it down the drain half an hour later, like wise cigarette smokers dont sit down and calculate how many five pound notes they burn.
whereas i do calculate my losses.,which is why I never spend more than i can afford to lose, not really any diferent from someone who goes into a pub and buys a pint.
when i am away gigging,as I will be next week[Croydon april 12,Darlington april 13,Maidenhead APRIL15],I often have an hour or two to kill,Inever stop in a pub to pass the time, whereas if i stop in a bookies i remain sober,i might lose a small amount of money but on occasions I win too,but I am in the dry and the warm, and remain ingood fettle to do my evening gig.
being on the road means a lot of hanging about[libraries are not always open or available]being on the road is about surviving ,Ihave been doing that for 35 YEARS

DICK, I have no interest whatsoever in how you spend your very hard earned money and it is also none of my business. Gamblers is a general term for people who gamble at the odds they are presented with. Your name was not mentioned at all. In fact like me you may have only had a flutter on Grand National Day like I do.
I used to gamble daily on horses not large sums mainly small amounts on accumulators for a bit of fun. In fact on a four horse win accumulator my five bob would have won me thousands had "Wolf Whistle" won at twenty to one, but it didn't. It scared the life out of the guy who was taking the bets and pocketing the money however.
My gambling habits completely stopped when I befriended one of the salesmen who came into our office on a Monthly basis. He knew what was going to win, trouble was I did not believe him until his final tip and I put a lot of money on and won a lot of money. I did not see him after that ,not even to buy him a drink, but just imagine all those people who were studying form, spending their hard earned money on all those races that were fixed, or when the horse was "trying".
You cannot fix a Grand National so that is the only race I gamble on.
If I had won a lot of money yesterday I would have been the first person to tell you Dick.
Al

AL,I quite agree, the bookmakers would not be there otherwise, the ordinary punter is only winning another punters money.
I wont have a bet until the scottish grand national, then I knock it on the head, until the welsh grand national DECEMBER?

This is not addressed to any specific person, nor intended as any sort of advice or interference in the business of anybody else: but simply to remark that it is a recognised fact that gambling can become an addiction and a marriage-breaker as destructive as alcoholism. Someone close to me is ending her life in near-penury, as the result of a habit developed fairly late in life by her late husband which lost him the entire proceeds, which should have come to her, of a reasonably successful practice built up over 40+ years. The whole lot rode away on the backs of racehorses.

hi

I am not a gambler. Just never been interested since as an 18 year old I worked in a village where a bookie called regularly to collect bets left with the landlord of the village pub.

He was a very heavy drinker and when in his cups he used to brag about how much money he made at the various horse race meetings.

I never really believed him until one night when I laughed at him he took me out to his car ( a daimler !!) and in the boot there was literally thousands a pounds. This was about forty years ago so work it out for yourselves how much by today's values that would be.

So I never bet. There is only one winner!!

My wife does on very odd occasions - but sensible amounts. Yesterday she had her usual Grand National Flutter and selected about six horses. One was the winnner !! So today we called in at the bookies to collect £43.62p for a stake of £20.

She is usually quite lucky when she bets - she knows nothing about horses !!

Cheers

MikeL2

Unlike complete games of chance, there is always a reason that a horse wins a race, and the fascination with the Sport of Kings is trying to find that reason.

One thing that used to puzzle me was that whenever you go into a bookies there's always someone called Cyril in there.

Well I've trained racing greyhounds to run at tracks all over Scotland and I can tell you Alan is right, the gambling game is bent double.
Dogs and horses are "stopped" more often than not.

I've won thousands on one race, lost too, but never too much.
and I've seen people wrecked by the "bug"

I would never go into a bookies shop, the vultures prey on the poor sods who dont have a life and most of the cheating has a bookie behind it

Totaliser betting is much "cleaner", not so open to abuse...so I would ban private bookmakers.

It would amaze you what some people will do to proud, beautiful animals just to make a few pounds...   :0(

Acorn 4 You will be interested to know that in our lane is a Greyhound Racing trainer and on Sunday Mornings the so called owners turn up to take their dogs for a walk. Normally up the lane and back.
Greyhounds are lovely dogs (apart from cat owners) and many sadly turn up on Greyhound Rescue. They make lovely pets ,but the majority of the Sunday lot are not interested once they stop racing. The ones that are walked by the trainers I enjoy looking at their construction and gait and it is interesting to ask how certain ones I pick out are doing.
The current large trainers I understand have contracts with stadiums to race their dogs which I was not aware of.
When I was a T Lad the 77A Bus used to go from Battersea to Merton Road Wandsworth where my school was situated and went on route past the Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium and it was always interesting from the top deck to see the dogs over the fence.
It was a constant rumour that the girls who used to load the dogs into the starting stalls gave the ones they didn't want to win a sharp squeeze on a couple of spheres near to hand.
It would certainly slow me down.
Al
