Subject: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: katlaughing Date: 04 Dec 10 - 10:59 PM Over here one often sees bumper stickers which say "Shit happens." Well, I saw one the other day which said, "Good happens." I'd like this to be a thread for a gathering of the good we all have in our lives. I know we post things in specific threads, but it doesn't have to be a book or anything. We could even have our own version of "good" tweets (or should that be 'licks?') on Mudcat. I will also include links to current threads which are upbeat. Yes, I know you can filter stuff out, but I'd like to do this one and see where it goes. I'll start with this: good music on the internet radio, right now, being hosted by Mudcat's own Max! Thanks, kat |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: Slag Date: 05 Dec 10 - 12:51 AM Great Idea Kat! Good DOES happen. We just finished Thanksgiving and the list of blessings was long. We are getting much needed rain more in the weather patterns I remember as a kid, lot's of rain. n It's beautiful here in N. CA and even though it's cold it makes the getting warm all the better. My daughter was out from TX with my new and only grandchild. Life doesn't get a whole lot better than it is right now. |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: michaelr Date: 05 Dec 10 - 01:59 AM Had a gig at a coffeehouse/pub tonight. I was really tired and almost fell asleep driving there, just low-energy and grumbling about having to set up the equipment etc. There was a good, appreciative crowd, and not halfway into the first set I felt energized! It turned out to be one of our best gigs this year - the band was grooving tight, the vocals sounded great, and the people loved it. So - the restorative healing power of music showed itself tonight. Good happens! Slag, where in NorCal are you? I'm in Santa Rosa. Cheers, Michael |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: MGM·Lion Date: 05 Dec 10 - 02:15 AM I would urge happily remarrying when one had thought one's life over after the death of a longtime much-loved first spouse as a good that can happen to those fortunate enough. ~Michael~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Dec 10 - 02:34 AM A friend came over for dinner tonight; he was the partner of my long-time hairdresser who died about 3 1/2 years ago, at the very young age of 45. Somehow that death brought us together as close friends, and though he's in love again (and it is good to see after grief for so long!) he's still one of the most supportive people in my life. Tonight we enjoyed a simple meal and told stories of events that normally might have been difficulties, but they were told in a way that found the underlying humor. Laughing until you might pee your pants is excellent for your health! SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: Ebbie Date: 05 Dec 10 - 03:17 AM Six years ago I and three other people started a wintertime monthly concert series. Once in awhile we have one set do 40 minutes but the typical routine is 5 sets, each of 20 minutes. We 'book' a wide variety of acts and it is always great fun I just got home from this month's. I especially appreciated it because last month I couldn't go- the little rescued dog I have has severe separation anxiety. Tonight a friend puppy-sat him, along with her two dogs and he was fine. See? Good things! Happen! |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: Slag Date: 05 Dec 10 - 05:42 AM ~Michael~! Just up the road a piece in Lakeport. Santa Rosa, all right! Where was your gig? |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: MGM·Lion Date: 05 Dec 10 - 06:49 AM Slag ~~ in interests of accuracy, must point out you were not replying to ~Michael~ [which is me], but to Michael [which isn't]. Small point, and a drift; but my watchword is ever "Accuracy Matters'! ~Michael~ "MtheGM your pedantry is legendary" as I have, just perhaps, previously mentioned, was the comment of a fellows-poster on another Forum/MessageBoard site I occasionally indulge in... |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: katlaughing Date: 05 Dec 10 - 10:49 AM See, folks, thanks for joining in! Good, Happens! MtheGM, have you??? Are congrats in order? My cats are singing lovely tunes to me this morning in hopes of breakfast. And, I am about to go listen to the Alternative Advent Calendar Song for Today at Propergander.com (sic) (scroll down) which Joe started a thread about in the music section. It's really neat! |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: katlaughing Date: 05 Dec 10 - 03:00 PM What a neat town it sounds. I loved this one: It's fun to pet a pet, but better yet, try to pet a luma. LOL! |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: Slag Date: 05 Dec 10 - 07:33 PM Hey! Congatulations, MtheGM, Emma! May your union be blessed! Sorry about the confusion in names. I scrolled back up to make sure I got the name right and in so doing...got it wrong! Ah, Petaluma, often referred to locally as "Chick-a-luma". My Mom actually graduated highschool there! At one time it was the egg producing capital of the Western US! There are some interesting stories and history about Petaluma. Check the net. I seem to remember Snoopy ( of Charles Schulz fame [who as longtime resident of Santa Rosa]) entering the wrist-wrestling championship there. Believe it or not, for a while my Gransmother lived in Santa Rosa and a certain Luther Burbank would walk by her house to admire HER garden! Grandma gardened all her life and was a marvel at making things grow. |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: Bill D Date: 05 Dec 10 - 07:45 PM Well...our (Rita's & my) craft season just ended, and I am happy to report an excellent response. We sold 90% of everything! (only downside is, now we have work to do for the Spring set!....rough! **grin**) And I got ALL the leaves cleaned up this year before rain & snow.. And a neighbor is buying an old car we have had sitting here for 2 years... And we just returned from a holiday Carol singing and cookie-eating party. And my son is 'almost' finished with his college degree! **crossed fingers** ................and, last week I finally got a downstairs toilet repaired that had stumped me for several years! Found obsolete part on the internet! What more could a feller want? |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 06 Dec 10 - 07:27 AM Watching footage in UK of a rookie policeman saving a man who had fallen backwards onto a train track at a station. Without any thought to himself he pulled the man out of the path of the oncoming train just seconds away from hurtling through. Phew! Although it was bad for the man who fell, it was good to see police in a positive light saving life. Hope he gets a medal for that. |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: Charmion Date: 06 Dec 10 - 01:38 PM I was standing in line at the beer store (which is where one returns wine and liquor bottles as well) with a box full of bottles to return. Ahead of me were the inevitable nice middle-aged guy who lives on beer and had six cases to return, and a restaurateur and his wife with what looked like a truckload. A woman with a small child came in behind me, assessed the wait as longer than her daughter could tolerate -- and gave me her bottles. That was three dollars and twenty cents I never expected to have. |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: katlaughing Date: 26 Dec 10 - 11:17 PM Please read THIS ARTICLE and see what good comes from remarkable young teens. This is a REALLY neat story! |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: Stilly River Sage Date: 26 Dec 10 - 11:40 PM That is very nice. With the difficult situation that family is in, it's wonderful that they found this help. And most nights, Sam will tremble with excitement as Rudy picks him up. I hope Rudy keeps in touch when he comes home during breaks from school. :) SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 27 Dec 10 - 05:48 PM That Kansas City Star set out to collect $25,000 for Harvesters (to provide food for children over weekends) and now has $140,000. |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: Bobert Date: 27 Dec 10 - 07:56 PM Ahhhhh, yes.... Good does counterbalance and on occasion wins hands down... Actually, if we looked at everything that happens on any given day there is way more good than bad... It's just that the bad seems more entertaining so we hear alot more about it... If I had the $$$ I start my own cable news station that only dealt with good news 'cause there's plenty of it out there... Plenty!!! B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Good Happens - A Counterbalance From: Allan C. Date: 28 Dec 10 - 06:18 AM In another thread Kendall said, "Steel is tempered in fire, and mankind by adversity." The stories I most enjoy are those in which someone finds a way to overcome whatever adversity has entered their life. Then it becomes a story of "when good things happen". However, I think that in many cases this is an inappropriate label. As I recall a number of "when good things happen" stories, including most of what have been posted here, it seems to me that most of the time the good things didn't just happen - the recipient of the "good" has somehow taken measures to make it happen. I'm not saying this is always the case; but it seems to be more the rule than the exception. Serendipity often works for good as well. |
