Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Ed T Date: 21 Jan 11 - 05:29 PM :) I like sardines. I also like smoked salmon, especially the heat smoked type. There are few fish that I don't like, or would not consider eating for breakfast. The canned sardines were "in spring water" not in "olive oil", not that there is anyhing wrong with olive oil. I just like the young herring taste better, versus the overpowering olive oil taste. Two days ago I fried up the meat from two lobsters, in butter. I made a sandwitch with mao. Frying the lobster created an entirely different flavour. A few weeks ago, I made a clam chowder for breakfast...it was very good. |

Because I kept forgetting to buy half-and-half. Eventually, because I also kept forgetting to buy coffee beans. Have a stash of stale Folger's ground coffee bought at the local convenience store sometime or other when I realized I was out of coffee at 11:00 pm. Had been making do with it for a couple of days. This morning, I poured water into the coffee maker, pulled out the basket to add the Folger's, opened the lid on the coffee grinder and scooped the ground coffee into there, slipped the empty coffee basket back over the pot, and made myself a full pot of hot water. Being as how I also kept forgetting to buy dish soap, once I finally succeeded in making a pot of stale coffee, I realized there was not a clean coffee cup in the house. Good thing I have heavy, thick-walled glasses. Rough morning. |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: JennyO Date: 22 Jan 11 - 10:04 AM Weetbix - the genuine stuff from Oz which I sent over here. The box is nearly empty, so soon I'll have to start having Weetabix, which is the UK's imitation one - not much different in taste, but not quite as good - naturally! Followed that with a cup of tea and a nice piece of raisin toast with lots of butter. Yum! The tea also comes from Oz, and we're fast running out of that. There is a chain of tea places there called T2. They have a huge range of interesting teas. We usually drink decaffeinated, and we discovered one there which is called Daintree tea. It is naturally low in caffeine - actually lower than your normal decaffeinated tea, and has a lovely flavour. We make a pot of that first thing every morning. There's no equivalent here that I've found, so I suppose I'll have to get my son or daughter or someone in Sydney to send us some more - or wait till we visit in 2112. |

But I also feel that food is very very important..especially when so many don't have enough or the right kind...and saying what we eat is very important...and will become more prevalent as we realize what is driving diabetes and obesity etc..the two issues are separate issues...people writing down here is not taking anything away from something else...and hopefully people will check them out but for now there is interest in this very primal topic. mg P.S. I went to McDonald's yesterday and had 2 sausage mcmuffins with half the buns tossed (should have been all buns tossed actually) and eggs and diet coke and it was exactly what my body needed, minus any preservatives, antibiotics, pesticides, etc. I do very well on saturated fat and can not do carbs at all and some of the breakfasts mentioned above would lay me out flat, and cause me to gain even more weight. mg |

From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 22 Jan 11 - 08:23 PM One quick favorite is to take a slice of bread, cut out the middle (a knife, or you can use those fried egg container shapes), insert an egg, and fry in a pan. This can also be done in the microwave if wanted - you just have to modify the cooking technique slightly to adjust to the microwave. I like to use those 2 plate sandwich toasters, so you can also toast the cutout. You can also drop this on top of the egg in the hole. A recent modification is to place a second slice of bread and place some cheese on it, then slide the egged bread piece when solid on top, to glue it together. You can also add things like thin tomato slices, or spreading some other flavoring, before sprinkling the shredded cheese, or adding sliced cheese. |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Charmion Date: 23 Jan 11 - 01:00 PM WRT Kendal's point: Some threads you read, follow the link and take in the message. The Hal An Tow thread is one of those: I followed the link to YouTube and watched several of the videos; I will think about what I heard, but have nothing to say because I did not know the musicians. Other threads you glance at and post to, then move on -- easy peasy. A whole different kind of interaction, much more casual and, it must be admitted, usually much less significant. Sunday breakfast is always good. Today we had a nice cheese omelette with green onions, croissants from the French bakery on Murray Street, and three espressos each. |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Beer Date: 23 Jan 11 - 09:21 PM Strangest meal of the day. You must eat your corn flakes, your porridge, your toast, your bran and so on. I eat what I want. Most of the time it is bacon and eggs or Newfoundland steak, give me a can of beans and throw in a few hot dogs. But my favorite is a good bowl of stew, or barley soup. Trout is always a favorite when one can buy it or catch one. If I was back home (the maritimes.) I would have a clam omelet. I know, I know a lot of what i eat is not good for me but I like breakfast the way I want it and not by who says what I should eat. Porridge is probably one of the best things for you. Personally I can't look at the stuff. I had it 7 days a week when there was nothing else and that is probably the reason. But if you like it, than why not eat it for lunch or supper. Have you ever heard of anyone doing so? If I like my stew in the morning than why not have it. When my wife rolls her eyes at my breakfast plate of goodies, I just shrug my shoulders with a smile. ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST, topsie Date: 24 Jan 11 - 05:12 AM Beer, it's not such a strange idea - the traditional breakfast at a large country house would include a choice of kedgeree, kippers, chops, devilled kidneys and many more substantial dishes. Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Backwoodsman Date: 24 Jan 11 - 10:49 AM Beer, I changed my Mudcat name to Backwoodsman because the term was used about me as an attempted insult by one of our, shall we say, psychologically- (or perhaps psychiatrically-) challenged members. Otherwise it says nothing about me at all. By the bye, what's a fiddle-head omelette? Omelette I understand, but 'fiddle-head omelette' sounds like something the guy might eat before climbing on to the roof to play his banjo. :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST, topsie Date: 24 Jan 11 - 06:22 PM The only thing I would change in Dave MacKenzie's post would be to swap over the milk and cream (milk only if cream is unavailable). Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Joe_F Date: 24 Jan 11 - 08:57 PM Jewish French Toast Break eggs into a small bowl. Stir in enough milk to make the mixture smooth. Brown in a little olive oil & butter a chopped small onion. Add a sliced mushroom or two. Add something savory (such as sliced salami or kipper). Break a matzoh in coarse pieces into the egg-milk mixture. Pour it over the ingredients in the frying pan. Cover with a plate. When the plate gets too hot to touch, remove it, discard the condensed water on it, cut the contents of the pan in quarters with a spatula, and turn them over. Season with salt & pepper; that takes enough time to finish the other side. Serve on the heated plate. |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: JennyO Date: 26 Jan 11 - 08:47 AM Today we had porridge with brown sugar and creamy milk. Yum! Rob said his mother always cooked it with milk, and I always just cooked it with water (and a pinch of salt) and added the milk when eating it. So we've reached a compromise - cooked it with half milk and half water. BTW I think the pinch of salt is very important for the flavour. When I was in Oz, I sometimes used to have it with soy milk, brown sugar and LSA (ground mixed linseed sunflower and almond) and it was really yummy. I'm not a great lover of soy milk, but it does go well with porridge. As for having breakfast food at other times of the day - I've often been known to have weetbix for a bedtime snack - very satisfying. And for the person who suggested kittens - raw or cooked - I quote my friend Rhymin' Simon here - "I like kittens, but I couldn't eat a whole one!" |

Why do you pour it from a great height? Doesn't that make it go cold too quickly? Or is it that you are preparing your breakfast on the floor or a low coffee table and you can't be bothered to bend down? |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 31 Jan 11 - 03:41 PM I like to get an extra stir, and froth, by pouring from a height into the (pre-stirred) instant coffee, sugar and soya mix; and then to re-stir as I sip down my cup of coffee (or tea). |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 01 Feb 11 - 10:01 AM My dad used to ask me if i wanted a high poured or a low poured cup of tea and I thought he was joking but it did taste better. Unfortunately not many people use teapots these days. Talking of rituals with toast I leave the top crusted half until last and it has to be buttered up to the edge and if I have jam or marmalade it can only be spread to just a bit below the buttered crust. Strange but true. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST, topsie Date: 01 Feb 11 - 10:14 AM Not strange at all, Patsy, I always eat the top crust last, with plenty of butter right up to the edge. And it's always real butter. And I always make tea in a teapot. I was once astonished to watch someone making tea for six people in the kitchen attached to a hall (while we were setting up for a dance). He lined up six mugs and, ignoring the large teapot on the shelf, put a teabag in every cup. |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: JennyO Date: 05 Feb 11 - 09:16 AM Today we had some rather nice kippers, with buttered wholemeal toast on the side, followed by more toast and marmalade - but not just any marmalade. We found a lovely one while we were living in Aberdeen and brought down a couple of jars with us. Unfortunately we haven't been able to find marmalade anywhere near as tasty down here in Somerset, although it probably does exist somewhere. This morning I scraped the last bit out of the jar :( Our tea is also special. It is one that we sent over from Oz, from a chain of tea places there called T2. They have a loose leaf tea called Daintree Tea, which has the interesting property of being naturally so low in caffeine, that it is lower than decaffeinated tea. It also has a particularly good flavour. Unfortunately we are coming to the end of that too :( So it will soon be back to Tetley decaffeinated teabags unless we can find something else. So far we haven't found any decaffeinated loose tea here, which is a shame because we do prefer loose tea made in a teapot. Seems like a lot of the stuff we brought over or sent is running out now. I'm down to the last 4 Weetbix too (2 more breakfasts), and then it will be back to Weetabix, which although similar, is not as good IMO. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST, topsie Date: 05 Feb 11 - 10:24 AM JennyO, now is the time to make marmalade. Put 3lb or 1 1/2 kilos of Seville oranges (about 15 fair-size ones) and a lemon or two in a large pan, cover with water and bring to the boil and then simmer for ages, until well softened. Allow to cool, and remove the fruit from the liquid. Cut the fruit in half, and put the pips in a separate small saucepan (there will be far more than in dessert oranges). Put the pulp back in the cooking liquid, then cut the soft peel into thin slices and add those as well. Meanwhile, cover the pips with water and simmer, then strain and add the pip-water to the rest. Add sugar to the liquid/pulp/peel mixture at the rate of a pound of sugar to a pint of liquid (roughly 400 grams to 1/2 litre?), dissolve well and then boil till it reaches setting point. Pour into clean warm jamjars. If anyone tries to tell you that you have to slice the oranges BEFORE boiling them, just smile sweetly and ignore them. |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: JennyO Date: 09 Feb 11 - 10:00 AM Well I do intend to make my own marmalade one day, but in the meantime, my quest for the perfect marmalade has come up trumps. This one is every bit as good as the lovely one we used to get at Kellys of Cults in Aberdeen - maybe even better. We found it in a rather unexpected place - Pynes Butchery at North Petherton has a range of jams and chutneys and other goodies from Homefarm Foods Banbury. This is already our favourite butcher, and now we have yet another reason to go there. When I opened the jar of their seville orange marmalade today and sniffed it, I knew I had a winner. The taste confirmed it! That's a relief. My cupboard was starting to get cluttered up with marmalades that had failed the test, although they will probably get used up somehow at some point. So what did I have for breakfast? Tea (without any grumbles), toast and lovely marmalade. Yay! |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: gnu Date: 10 Feb 11 - 02:10 PM Gee... I am glad I got up this morning... Cornus canadensis (Canadian Dwarf Cornel, Canadian Bunchberry, Crackerberry,... Each flower has highly elastic petals that flip backward, releasing springy filaments that are cocked underneath the petals. The filaments snap upward flinging pollen out of containers hinged to the filaments. This motion takes place in less than half a millisecond and the pollen experiences 800 times the acceleration that the space shuttle does during liftoff. The Bunchberry has one of the fastest plant actions found so far requiring a camera capable of shooting 10,000 frames per second to catch the action (Edwards et al. 2005). The fruits are edible with a mild flavour somewhat like apples. I'll have to be more careful when I'm out in the woods. |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: JennyO Date: 11 Feb 11 - 10:15 AM Places serving all-day breakfasts are very plentiful all over Sydney, where I came from. It's quite a common practice, particularly on a Sunday morning in the inner 'burbs, particularly the more yuppie ones like Glebe and Annandale, to go out for a large breakfast quite late in the morning and into the afternoon. Good idea if you ask me! Meanwhile, just coming out of winter in Somerset, it was scrambled eggs on toast today, with tea, followed by more toast with marmalade and vegemite (not together). The thing that made today's breakfast different was that we were able to have it in our usually chilly conservatory because the sun was shining and had warmed it up (we did get up rather late). We could sit out there and watch the birds. Roll on spring and summer! |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 11 Feb 11 - 12:20 PM Thanks, Max. Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Maryrrf Date: 11 Feb 11 - 01:04 PM "All Day Breakfast" is also popular in the US - there are chains that specialize in breakfast any time of the day, although they offer lunch and dinner items as well - International House of Pancakes, Waffle House, Cracker Barrel, Aunt Sarah's Pancake House.
