Just saw the news...

Manchester United defender Gary Neville has retired from football with immediate effect, the player announced Wednesday.

Veteran full-back Neville, who turns 36 later this month, has not played since Premier League leaders United's victory away to West Bromwich Albion on New Year's Day.

Neville, a one club man, made 602 appearances for United and also won 85 England caps.

Thanks for all the great entertainment Gary!

Shall miss him. One of the real, hardworking, clean playing, professional in the best sense, gentleman players. Wish him all best of fortune in whatever may be his subsequent career.

Indeed. I wonder why... so suddenly?

Any sense watching Man City and Birmingham tonight? It would be the first game of the season for me as I try not to get into it until Yankee football is over (this Sunday). Can't spend too much time in front of the TV.

I don't know whats the matter with footballers of today, no stamina, Stanley Matthews, the king of dribble, carried on until he was 53.

Guest above, he wouldn't have played over 600 games for ManU if he was a bum.

(And no, I'm not a fan of ManU - I dislike big moneyed clubs - but I do believe they can pretty much get who they want and that managers like Ferguson are not fools).

Sorry that last guest was me, lost my cookie for some reason.

I think he is an unimaginative, boorish player with a serious attitude problem (England strike?). He's not in the same league as his contemporaries such as Beckham and Giggs and had he gone to another club he would have hung up his boots years ago.

He's good at throw-ins though.

I'm sure they will find this earth shattering news in Tahrir Square, Cairo.

Big Norman Voice, of course they bloody won't (though I think you'd suprised to know how popular English football is in Egypt).

I could come up will literally a million things in this world that they won't find earth shattering. Your point being?

I have no idea where you live, but in these parts you would be told that you are a complete tit.

Hi

As a Man U supporter for many years I have watched Gary Neville ever since he played his first game for the club.

He has been a model pro and played at the top of his form for many seasons.

Yes he is forthright and sometimes upsets certain people but it has always been for his club or country.

He played over 600 games for Man U and I think 85 for England - testament of his ability and durability. In the last two years he has been plagued by a serious injury and has not really ever recovered from it. He has tried to return but knew that he was not performing as he would have wished.

He will no doubt take a rest and think about what he wants to do for the rest of his career. There are rumours that he is being considered to replace the disgraced Andy Gray at Sky. My guess is he will be used for his knowledge, loyality and dedication at Manchester United.

Sorry to see you go Gary but you have made the correct decision.

Chees

I love tits, thanks Ed.
I still know that there are many more important things to worry about, than another boots-for-brains, coming to the end of his career.
Popularity is no guarantee of worthiness, after all Hitler was very popular once :)

Would never have believed that Godwin's Law, "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches" {Wikipedia}, could have impinged on a vanilla football thread like this [Big Norman Voice 3 posts back].

Blimey!

{Wiki goes on "It is precisely because such a comparison or reference may sometimes be appropriate, Godwin has argued that overuse of Nazi and Hitler comparisons should be avoided, because it robs the valid comparisons of their impact."}

Sugarfoot ~ I have always thought Beckham a grossly overrated player, & so do two of my cousins with whom the subject came up at a recent family occasion. I put the point that he could take an incomparable free kick, with which they agreed. Otherwise we concurred that his playing was just average-ish, if that; & that it was his undoubted physical beauty {my late wife used to gasp every time she happened to pass by while he was on the screen ~ ditto, for what it's worth & sorry for the drift, Jose Mourinho} + the social clout of his having married an equally beautiful & {at the time) distinguished wife, that accounted for his perceived pre-eminence.

Ruddy hell.....

Starts as a tribute to a genuine good footballer who has brought pleasure to millions, lifted the game and shown the type of club loyalty that is sadly lacking these days...

And we end up with references to Egypt and Hitler.

Wish there were more like Mr Neville. Young players have a role model to aspire to. Oh, and yes, his party piece is the throw in. Stanley Matthews was fit for his day and could stay on till 53. Players around him smoked, lived on fish & chips and would struggle to keep up in a Sunday league these days. His wizard reputation was well founded, looking at old footage but his longevity was a product of his day.

Neville retired when he couldn't compete for a place in the team he loved, rather than drop a league and show loyalty elsewhere. THAT is the difference between a football fan being good at the game and seeing the game rather than the club as your career.

Well, I have to say my admiration of Beckham as a player doesn't really extend to his personal life, which I don't follow too closely. I like Beckham for his commitment to his country and team mates - often he was the only player on the pitch who seems up for a game. Shame he went to America; even now I'd sign him for the Villa any day.

Hi

Well said Willie.

I see that Manchester United have advised Gary that a role in the coaching side of the club will be available to him. He already spends a lot of time with the many young hopefuls that come to Man U and he passes on advice and assistance to help them settle into becoming possible players for the club. As a boy entrant himself he is well qualified to take this lead and the young future footballers are lucky to have such an experienced mentor.

As well as all his attributes as a dedicated footballer Gary has tried to keep his private life, just that.

He and his brother Philip ( another very good footballer) do a tremendous amount of work for children's charities.

As for the David Beckham comments, I know that there are differing views about his ablities as a footballer. Mine is that for most of his early career at Manchester United he was an excellent player who fitted ideally into the team plan.

Interestingly David and Gary are very good friends - indeed Gary was David's best man. They could not have widely differing personal lives !! Cheers

The Wolves? Cool. Maybe if Gary had been on the pitch? Hehehehee.

Sorry. Rather trite I know.

In any case, I am all set and geared up for the ultimate game of "football" on the morrow... the Yankee football Superbowl. yes, I know it's not "football" but I watch (and played) them all... rugby too... but this Yankee football is just so amazingly complicated, strategic, explosive.

I love football, footy, rugby, hurling... and on, to lacrosse... but Yankee football is my fav. Ya just can't beat a game that involves the fans to the level that it does.

Sorry if that pisses anyone off. If it does, ya just never got into it like I did. (BTW, I am a Canuck and Canuck football sucks in comparison to ALL the others.)

hi gnu

I was at Wolves. I have to say that the better side won on the day. After we went in front we went walkabout. On this performance Wolves must stand a chance of avoiding the drop.

But having just watched the Chelsea v Liverpool game I don't think we got hurt too much. Especially after Arsenal gave a 4-0 lead away !!

Before yesterday who would have thought that both Chelsea and Man United would have lost and Arsenal only drew after leading by four goals????......that would have made a great treble !!

Cheers

MikeL2

Good luck to Gary Neville. He stayed at the top in a tough profession for a very long time. Few have shown so much staying power.

A good player, there's no doubt and arguably the best English right back of his generation. Good in the air as well for a guy of his stature.

"still know that there are many more important things to worry about, than another boots-for-brains,"

There are always important things going on in the world but that doesn't mean that folk can't discuss more ordinary mundane matters too. Life goes on and so it should. It seems strange that you should open up a thread which you have zero interest in when the title of the thread is clear to see.
