Subject: Spanish Civil War 75th Anniversary From: mikesamwild Date: 07 Feb 11 - 11:49 AM The Spanish Civil war began in July 1936 and this year marks the 75th Anniversary. Volunteers from many countries joined the International Brigades and many gave their lives for the cause and it would be nice if people could sing songs at appropriate meetings or performances and mention the fact. Geoff Lawes has done a great job of collating songs about the SCW on a perma thread on Mudcat. In UK there is a mobile Exhibition produced by the IB Memorial Trust that will be mounted around the country and it might be possible to book itand collaborate with performances in the same area. New songs and poems are also being written all the time in commemoration. Some areas have Folk Against Fascism groups that might link up PM me or Geoff Lawes if interested or Google IBMT or go on Facebook |
Subject: RE: Spanish Civil War 75th Anniversary From: GUEST Date: 07 Feb 11 - 12:27 PM Far distant, far distant, lies Foyers the brave... No tombstone memorial to hallow his grave His bones they lie scattered on the dark soil of Spain Where young Jamie Foyers for the workers was slain... As Tom Lehr said, "They might have won all the battles, but we had all the good songs." No PASSARAN! I am museing on Jock, an old Link, (Lincoln Brigade (( not really a Brigade of course))) - Scottish one legged sailor and great man (one hell of a sentence, eh?) ! Well, Jock used to sing to me... a song sung in the Lincoln Brigade ( in answer to me singing Jamie Foyers to him......) The Workers flag is growing pink It's no so red as ye may think... Subject: RE: Spanish Civil War 75th Anniversary From: GUEST,euan mor Date: 26 Apr 11 - 03:36 AM I'm part of Gallo Rojo, a group of anti fascist musicians, scottish and spanish in edinburgh, we play mostly spanish songs from the republic, civil war and the repression - we can be heard on youtube, search for Gallo Rojo Edimburgo. We are available for expenses to anyone interested in commemorating the struggle in the 30s and/or the struggle now. If anyone wants to get in touch with songs or gigs or anything else contact macpolvomusic@yahoo.co.uk Its very important not just to commemorate but to take action now. here in Scotland the situation is one in which "no platform" is still very viable, the scottish version of the EDL for example has been forced virtually off the streets by militant anti fascism, but the fight must go on - music can play a part in the struggle too, as another poster said, sing a song, play a benefit gig, do what you can! I'd also like to PM mikesamwild but no idea how unfortunately, if you read this can you get in touch! euan |

Subject: RE: Spanish Civil War 75th Anniversary From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 27 Apr 11 - 04:36 PM Some sites with songs of the Spanish Civil War: Himnos y canciones de la guerra civil, with songs of all participants on the republican front, with tunes. La guerra civil Espanola (canciones) Rojo y azul All above with texts and tunes. Canciones de la Guerra Civil y la Resistencia - tunes only; link to Woody Guthrie's Jarama Valley unfortunately not found, but "The young man from Alcalá" is in American English with a slight Texan touch. Subject: Spanish Civil War From: Reinhard Date: 20 Jul 11 - 04:17 PM Mike Harding quite insensitive today: "I've also got music to mark the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War which gave us so many great folksongs." Well, that is probably worth the half million of casualties in that war, or is it? |
Subject: RE: Spanish Civil War From: mikesamwild Date: 21 Jul 11 - 11:33 AM Is that all he said about the conflict? |
Subject: RE: Spanish Civil War From: GeoffLawes Date: 21 Jul 11 - 01:41 PM No. As Reinhard accurately quotes he said "I've also got music to mark the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War which gave us so many great folksongs." in the introduction to the programme when he briefly outlined the programme's contents but he said more about the International Brigades and the personal experience of the father of a friend who fought against Franco before the playing of Christy Moore's Viva La Quince Brigada (9minutes and 40 seconds into the programme ) And he talked about Guernica at the end of the programme before introducing a song which I had not encountered before called Market Day at Guernica sung by Katie Melua and written by Mike Batt.I have added this song to the Songs in English About the Spanish Civil War Mudcat thread and have included a link and access details to the BBC i player listing where you can hear the whole Programme for the next week. thread.cfm?threadid=128093#market Any suggestion that Mike Harding was insensitive to the suffering caused by the SCW is inappropriate. |
Subject: RE: Spanish Civil War From: GUEST,Ebor_Fiddler Date: 22 Jul 11 - 12:56 PM The Spanish Civil War is history. Am I therefore being insensitive if I recite "On 'Is 'Orse with 'Is 'Awk in 'Is 'And?" William The Bastard caused us more suffering than all the Spanish war did. We still remember his "Harrying of The North" round here. |
