Subject: BS: BOBERT From: GUEST,999 Date: 02 Mar 12 - 09:35 PM There's some serious weather near Charlotte, and IF one or more of the tornadoes gets there, the folks who know about this stuff say midnight to 1:30 AM tonight is when it (they) could hit. The safest place is a basement in the southwest corner. If ya got gas, turn it off. Take a mattress and you and P-vine get under it. I'm sure you know this stuff, but if ya don't . . . Ya got time, so let your friends know. B |

Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: Bobert Date: 02 Mar 12 - 09:50 PM I'm on it, brucie... I've got cold beer... No, Boberdz... Bad answer... I have the TV on and watching... Unfortunately, the grand youngins is here with their dad and step mom so... ...I think that I'll stay up awhile and it things look real bad I'll get 'um all up and we'll go hide in the basement... Ahhhhh, another bad answer... No, here's my thinking... If things get bad than I'm gonna get everyone in cars, strap on the belts and we'll drive 'um back the back of the property and part next to my Spartanette trailer so that if any trees fall the trailer will take the hit... I've been thinkin' about this one all night... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: Ebbie Date: 02 Mar 12 - 10:45 PM Back when I was too youngndumb to worry I lived in tornado country for a couple of years but I don't remember even hearing about them. Nowadays I wonder why people don't have a 'safe' room all set up nice and comfy and go sleep in there automatically when the conditions are right for a storm? I wouldn't relish getting everybody up at 2 in the morning and hustling sleepy and scared people into a basement. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: Bobert Date: 02 Mar 12 - 10:52 PM Yup... I think riding anything out in cars next to the Spartan trailer is the best and safest place I can think of... I'm bn the sleep shift and step son and D-I-L are on the 2-3 am shift... We'll be okay... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: Bill D Date: 02 Mar 12 - 10:53 PM We in DC area are getting thunder & rain right now... we seldom get really dangerous stuff, for various reasons. Back when I lived in Wichita, there was some sort of mantra that "tornadoes never hit in the city limits"... as far as I know, they never have....but wow, I saw what they did right near us! Stay safe, Bobert.... |

Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: Bobert Date: 03 Mar 12 - 08:38 AM Well, well, well... Looks as if the worst damage was 20-25 miles from us... Houses blown up, cars turned over, trees down, no electricity, etc... So we dodged that... I really did have a plan and my step son and wife kinda kept an eye on things during the night in case we had to implement the plan... Okay, I'm not saying the plan we perfect but it was better than being in the house... We did, however, get a lot of rain and our pond is badly flooded and it we get any more rain we might lose our driveway... The water is up to the edge of it right now... The pond is about 2 foot above flood... But I think we're okay... Thanks all for your concern... Especially my good buddy, brucie, who never pisses me off too bad... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: catspaw49 Date: 03 Mar 12 - 08:55 AM We were on the direct line of the storm that hit southern Indiana and I was happy to see it blew itself out before it got here! Lots of wind and rain but the tornado risk had dropped off. I cannot imagine what the people in Maryville, Indiana are going through. The little village of about the same size as mine is completely destroyed. People lost everything including family members all over the large swath of the storms. The sheer size of the extreme and high risk area was unbelievable. On the plus side, with today's communications and technology, I'm sure many people owe their lives to the early and extensive warning. My heart goes out to all of those affected. Their lives are changed forever.................. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: catspaw49 Date: 03 Mar 12 - 09:57 AM I think most of the storm damage was between north Chattanooga up to Ooltewah where there was serious damage. Knoxville is about 75 north of there. I used to live in Chattanooga where bad storms can pop up even over the mountains which surround the place. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: Rapparee Date: 03 Mar 12 - 10:05 AM GO TO THE GODDAMN basement! Southwest corner, usually, backs to the wall. Or build yerself a storm cellar like folks usta have. If yer in the basement and a tree falls on the house you're gonna be shaken up but okay...unlike being out in the open. Otherwise...I concerned about my family and friends out that way. |

Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: GUEST,999 Date: 03 Mar 12 - 10:52 AM If a mod would like to close this thread, be my guest. Bobert and Spaw are doing OK and I just wanted to warn Bobert--and if I'd known where Spaw lived, him too--about the situation. The way things are going, I'll probably be starting a similar thread again. And something ain't right with the world: just had 15 Canadian Geese fly over and about 10 minutes later (as in just now) two flights of about 150 each. Glad everyone's well. Thanks for keeping us all informed. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: Bobert Date: 03 Mar 12 - 10:53 AM Well, my plan was to put everyone in cars and then drive 'um back to where my Spartan trailer is and park up as close to it as possible with everyone in their seat belts... I figured that if a tree were to fall then the trailer would take most of th blow and cars??? Well, yeah, they sometimes get rearranged a little but with seat belts on, hey, beat being in a house with no basement, right??? B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: GUEST,999 Date: 03 Mar 12 - 11:02 AM Tip for the future, Bobster: unless you have a Formula 3, you can't out-drive a tornado. Best course is 90 degrees to its direction of travel. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: Bobert Date: 03 Mar 12 - 11:10 AM I'd rather have a Cessna 310, brucie, at about 12,000-15,000 feet and flying toward the back side of the sumabich... B~ |

They are probably being blown north if you are getting the same winds from the south west as we are - gusts to 90kph. |

Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: Rapparee Date: 03 Mar 12 - 12:16 PM Bill, the reason DC doesn't get tornadoes and stuff is because hot air rises. Congress, etc. causes enough hot air to lift them storms right on over the town. |

Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: SINSULL Date: 03 Mar 12 - 12:28 PM Sad coincidence: Marysville, Victoria, Australia was destroyed by fire in 2009. I knew the name rang a bell. I have a screensaver of the devastation with a single grren shoot poking through the ashes. Stay safe, Bobert. |

Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: Bobert Date: 03 Mar 12 - 12:44 PM Not to worry, Amos... Dani is just fine... The bad stuff didn't go that far northeast of Charlotte... I've been out with my engineering hat on checking this and that and talkin' with the lady who has horses on the other side of the pond and I need to rent a level and rod and shoot some grades and figure out some stuff or the veggie garden I'm in the process of building up might get flooded.... Gonna need two 10 inch pipes under the portion of the driveway the runs over the dam... maybe a cattle crossing with a spill way... I donno... I do know that I'd hate for one of these to wipe out our fresh food... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: Janie Date: 03 Mar 12 - 04:21 PM Tornados, severe thunderstorms and high winds are common enough here in North Carolina to pay attention, but not so common as to warrant the expense of a storm cellar. Basements are uncommon, at least in my neck of the woods, and in this part of the state are never completely underground. Towns do not tend to have civil defence sirens, and I don't think one would wake me in the middle of the night anyway. We do have automatic telephone alerts in many counties and municipalities. It is foolish to not have a weather radio with a loud alert. I am acutely aware the house where I now live does not offer anything remotely adequate in terms of shelter in the event of a tornado. I don't know if I would be better off in the deep ditch along the front of the lot, in the long and narrow interior hallway that runs most of the length of the house, or in the one interior closet - in the bathroom, but the back wall is a 1/4" plywood panel to allow access to the shower/tub plumbing, and the opposite, exterior side of that wall is a thin, acrylic tub enclosure panel. I think I would head for the interior hall, and grap cushions from the couches to lie under. If time permitted and my son were here to help, I'd drag the futon off the guest bed to place over us to protect from falling trees and roof trusses. I don't spend time worrying about these things, but I do wish I could figure out the best plan in the event it was necessary. In the event of a hurricane warning (rare, but they do occasionally occur this far inland,) I would probably evacuate to either a shelter or a friend's house. There is lots of time to react with a hurricane warning. Not so tornados. Is an at-ground-level crawl space safer than a hallway or closet? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: BOBERT From: gnu Date: 03 Mar 12 - 04:40 PM I'd guess the crawl space would be safer. Even more safe would be a fairly solid box built in the crawl space and anchored to ground. Just a thought. |
