Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie - her early recordings From: keberoxu Date: 07 Mar 16 - 02:04 PM My parents had that Westminster album. Jean Ritchie was photographed on the front, in a concert gown, sitting down with the gown pooled out before her, and her Appalachian dulcimer on her begowned lap. Black and white photo of course. Made an impression. |

Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie - her early recordings From: keberoxu Date: 24 Feb 18 - 02:17 PM From my parent's record collection, I recognize two albums that featured Jean Ritchie and Oscar Brand as a vocal duo: the Elektra Courting Songs, and the other one, I recognize by the song tracks. Your title here is "Riddle Me This" but my parents' copy was called "Courting and Riddle Songs." I can't recall the label though. And THANK YOU for freeing me of a Mondegreen! For some reason, lo! those many years ago, I never got that Jean Ritchie sang "Poppy Buy Me a Big Glass Doll, Do, Poppy, Do." There must have been a different title for that track. Never mind what I thought it was, I NEVER thought it was a Glass Doll. Message (now) Understood. |
Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie - her early recordings From: Thomas Stern Date: 24 Feb 18 - 05:03 PM Hi keberoxu, Thanks for comments. Please note the listing for the RIDDLE ME THIS album shows it was issued by RIVERSIDE in 1957. The following line shows the WASHINGTON re-issue in 1961 as COURTING AND RIDDLE SONGS. Many of the Riverside folklore series albums were reprinted on the WASHINGTON label, some with different titles and new cover art, though they might have a subtitle which is the original Riverside title. The liner notes are the same. As far as I know, all the WASHINGTON reissues were exatly the same as the original, if you look at the wax some still carried the Riverside catalog number crossed off and the Washington number added. The only instance I am aware of where a Riverside album was NOT reproduced exactly is the JOHN RUNGE album which selected tracks from the two Riverside releases onto one Washington album. Cheers, Thomas. |
