It's on Youtube Leadfingers. Can you listen to it and then try to copy the chords?
By the way, (I've just listened to it) why does he pronounce it 'Eddipus'? Surely it's 'Eedipus'? As in oestrogen ('eestrogen') and oedema ('eedema')
Very funny song though. I like his Vatican Rag best of all.

Hi LF

There's a download of the sheet music available (at a price)
here.

It shows the first page as a sample.

There's a descending bass and it goes through C, Cmaj7, C7, C6 then the same sequence but with B flat chords, then A flat chords, then G chords (except instead of G6 it's Gm7flattened5. It returns to the C chords sequence, then B flat chords then the page runs out!

LFF

Eddipus is the normal American English pronumciation. EEdipus sounds hopelessly stuffy and Brrritish.

It is from Greek - how would it sound in the original?

Love Tom Lehrer, and it makes me sad that so many people now have never heard of him.

"I hold your hand in mine" and "The rose between your teeth" and "Life is like a sewer" and "When Mozart was my age..." once got guffaws and belly laughs. Now they gte puzzled looks and require explanation. Getting old is tough.

So keep singing his songs!

Actually, the Greeks themselves pronounce it "Eeez-EE-poosh" (!!) so the initial syllable is 'eeee'. Sorry if it's stuffy and British, but there you are.

More of a 'th' than a 'z' I would have thought. (BTW I read today that 'th' is disappearing from English English.)

I see that modern Greeks seem to call him 'Eethipothos' or something like that: Οιδίποδας But maybe I misunderstand that page - it's 50 years since I studied ancient Greek!

How the ancients pronounced it, who knows? How do we know that a Latin V is pronounced W?

The 'z' is pronounced more like the 'j' in the French 'je'.
But the first syllable is definitely 'eee' and not 'eh'.

Do Americans say 'Edd-eema' for oedema? And 'esstrogen' for 'oestrogen'? Very interesting to me; I love linguistic differences.

DaveRo How we know how the ancients pronounced Latin - to my intense irritation, since I love "church Latin" pronunciation (rejeena chaylie rather than regh-eyna koylie) - because a bunch of anal retentive academics scoured through ancient texts to find rhymes, and even found complaints about wrong pronunciations. So the British pronunciation is more accurate in relation to how the ancients spoke than the French or Italian pronunciation.

Thanks, LFFreddie. Hmm, not one of his more sparkling efforts.
