What tuning is Joe henry using on Gentle On My Mind which he does with Billy Bragg? The key is E but he's capo-ing on the third.

It's a process. As is the case with many of our threads, the thread is a group effort. I can find the tracks, but I don't do chords. But we have lots of great guitarists here who can figure out the chords.

I would suspect that he is playing it using DADGAD tuning. In the first example Joe has given above, the capo is at the 2nd fret, while in the second example it is as the third fret. I am not particularly familiar with the chord shapes one uses for DADGAD, but the simple shapes he is using going up the neck would indicate that, or perhaps another open tuning.

I came to the same conclusion; neatly avoiding the more elaborate descending chord sequence in the original song.
