Subject: RE: Gentle on My Mind , Parody, Words? From: GaryD Date: 31 Oct 97 - 10:56 PM Sorry to do this, but I can't resist..Wasn't that a song about a Rabbi in love with somone not of his faith?...Oh, that must be GENTILE on my Mind! |
Subject: RE: Gentle on My Mind , Parody, Words? From: Ted from Australia Date: 02 Nov 97 - 01:33 AM Go for it Garry, Do the whole song! (not the one liner that a penguin could think of) and remember that in a parody you are allowed, aye, encouraged, to have a go a all minority or ethnic groups Regards Ted ;-)> |
Subject: RE: Gentle on My Mind , Parody, Words? From: GaryD Date: 02 Nov 97 - 03:42 PM You mean to say that I stumbled on reality?...I just thought of it as a joke!..I don't really know the parody you were talking about has to do with the above..I'd love to hear it.. I'll follow for a while..I love parodies..If you like others, search for Homer & Jethro, who were affectionatly called the "Stone Age Smothers Brothers"..made a big name for themselves by bending lyrics of popular songs. If I recall, there was a thread here too, a few weeks ago..you might look back a bit. |
Subject: RE: Gentle on My Mind , Parody, Words? From: John in Brisbane Date: 02 Nov 97 - 06:15 PM Ted, I suspect that few people outside of Australia would have heard of Greg Champion, but he is a very clever and prolific parody composer. He wrote a version entitled 'Burglars On My Mind' which I learned for a single performance about 10 years ago. The words go something like "... It's Knowing that your back door's always open and your front's got no dead-lock, that makes me want to steal the ??? you've got stashed beneath your couch, To me an open window is an open invitation to make your unmarked video equipment mine, And take it through the back yards and the car parks and the ???... If this is of interest I'll dig the lyrics out and re-send. Regards John

Subject: RE: Gentle on My Mind , Parody, Words? From: Ted from Australia Date: 04 Nov 97 - 03:53 AM Thanx John. Yes i would like the words from Greg Champion (of the Wannabes?) GaryD, jump on board and welcome. I remember Homer and Jethro OK ( big Grin ) and i would not be surprised to find that they had had a go at Gentle. The one that i am actually looking for though is more of a reply from the woman in questiion. She really tells him what to do with his sleeping bag Regards, Ted.:-)> |
Subject: RE: Gentle on My Mind , Parody, Words? From: Jon W. Date: 04 Nov 97 - 10:05 AM Last night, I suddenly remembered that I had started a parody of this song myself, many years ago:
Well, it's snowing and your door is always open and your carpet's getting wet To paraphrase a math book, the completion of this parody is left as an exercise for the reader. |
Subject: RE: Gentle on My Mind , Parody, Words? From: greta Date: 04 Nov 97 - 07:25 PM I have a dim memory of there being a Mad Magazine parody of this about Spock from Star Trek, that went something like, "It's having pointed ears and hearing crewmen telling Vulcan jokes on ship," but I was ten years old and don't remember the rest. I'll see if I can dig up the magazine. -Greta |
Subject: RE: Gentle on My Mind , Parody, Words? From: John in Brisbane Date: 04 Nov 97 - 09:51 PM BTW, was the original written by John Hartford? Is John still recording - I haven't seen any of his stuff for 20 years. |
Subject: RE: Gentle on My Mind , Parody, Words? From: Earl Date: 04 Nov 97 - 11:26 PM John Hartford is still recording and still performing but tends to do more straight bluegrass and less pop. Unlike most bluegrass performers, he's also entertaining. I saw him at a festival once go from the stage into the audience in the middle of a song. With just voice and unamplified banjo he held everyone's attention as he walked through the crowd. |

Subject: RE: Gentle on My Mind , Parody, Words? From: Art Thieme Date: 28 Aug 98 - 06:36 PM John Hartford is definitely still picking and singing better than ever. His fiddle is very much a part of his show now too. He's been quite ill lately but says he is doing well after appropriate medication. He travels with others in his bus and in his backup band (Ronnie McCoury for one)and that allows him to get rest on stage when he needs it. The dancing is something he's doing less of, if any, now. I got to hang out with John on the riverboats Julia Belle Swain and the Twilight a bunch over the last ten years. He'd come aboard and pilot the boats I was the working on (Mississippi River)quite often. Both boats were designed, built and owned by Capt. Dennis Trone---not John! (Everybody thinks John owned the boats, but that's completely wrong!) Every summer, for all those fondly remembered years, my main gig was acting as the folksinger/tall tale teller on those boats. That allowed me to stay closer to home as health issues erupted. Best "job" I ever had! Even the 16 hour days--every other day for 5 months a year. Art |

Subject: RE: Gentle on My Mind , Parody, Words? From: Barry Finn Date: 29 Aug 98 - 11:03 PM John Hardford must be doing very well, while at the last Mystic Sea Music Fest, you wouldn't know he'd been in ill health, ever, in great spirits & form. He was doing riverboat songs, never knew he was into anything outside bluegrass. Barry |
Subject: RE: Gentle on My Mind , Parody, Words? From: Ted from Australia Date: 30 Aug 98 - 08:37 AM Thanks Roger & Gene I enjoyed " Messin Up My Mind" Good old male chauvinist stuff! The one that I am specificaly searching for is from the womans point of view, in which she really tells him where to get off. Thanks again Ted

Subject: RE: Gentle on My Mind , Parody, Words? From: Art Thieme Date: 30 Aug 98 - 03:12 PM By sayin' John's more into "bluegrass" now, I was saying he's traveling with side musicians in the bus with him. In other times he was OFTEN a solo.Yep, as I said, he's better'n ever.Is doing well. He was on the Twilight last week. Art |
Subject: RE: Gentle on My Mind , Parody, Words? From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Aug 98 - 08:23 PM Art, did you say John Hartford pilots riverboats? Where'd he learn how to do that? Tell us more. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: Lyr Add: DON'T LEAVE YOUR RECORDS IN THE SUN From: Roger Himler Date: 30 Aug 98 - 09:25 PM John used to be a regular at the Frederick Craft Show here in Maryland. The last time I saw him, he had his son with him, I believe. John was hooked up to FM broadcast style microphones so he had no wires attached to his mike (ala Madonna) or to his fiddle. He came down off the stage and walked into the audience without missing a note. Quite a performer as well as a hell of a musician and songwriter. My old, dated John Hartford song is
"Don't leave your records in the sun, CHO:
They just won't play, just won't play,
I bought a record just the other day, Still makes me smile and remember a few records I warped. The last one was a copy of Van Morrison's album on Bang Records. Roger in Baltimore

Subject: Lyr Add: BURGLARS ON MY MIND (Greg Champion) From: John in Brisbane Date: 20 Oct 98 - 07:29 PM It's been a long time coming, but here is a parody penned by Greg Champion from Melbourne, Australia. Greg has a number of albums out, typically dealing with Melbourne pop culture stuff like Aussie Rules Football, cricket etc. I recall him stealing the show as a warm-up to a Christy Moore concert. But unlike Brisbainites, Melbournians are much more parochial. BURGLARS ON MY MIND
It's knowing that your back door's always open and your front's got no deadlock

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'Gentle on My Mind' parody From: GUEST,Pam L. Date: 05 Mar 19 - 01:57 PM All I remember from about the ‘70’s was on TV a comedian man singing, “It’s just knowing that your doors are always open and your furniture is gone.” I did a search on YouTube and Google. I didn’t want to listen to any of them since there were some I knew I didn’t want to hear and it’s too complicated for me to find the one I wanted. Please let me know if you find the one for which I’m looking. leepamelalea@gmail.com |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'Gentle on My Mind' parody From: GUEST,Hugh Date: 02 Sep 21 - 12:22 PM @Pam L .. I vaguely know the one you are referring to. It was just a little one-line drop-in, done by Glen Campbell himself. I think it was on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'Gentle on My Mind' parody From: GUEST,Pakko Date: 02 May 23 - 08:46 PM Wow, it took 24 years for the answer to finally appear. I have wondered the exact same question for years. I can't hear the song without thinking about "all your furniture is gone." - mpakko@yahoo.com |
