HOLIO (than Thou)
Words: F
Tune: Sweet Betsy from Pike, or any other good tune

I am so holy and kindly and wise
Folks come from miles to gaze in my eyes
Sit at my feet and you quickly will see
No one is half as enlightened as me.
        Singin’                Holio, holio holio ho
Everyone loves me wherever I go

When my friends need me I always am there.
I always listen and I always care
I always phone them and email them too
I’m not a burnt-out old hippie like you.
                        Holio, holio holio ho
Everyone loves me wherever I go

That stuff you’re eating, I used to eat that.
It made me bloated and stupid and fat
Eat what I eat, and you surely will see
You can be brilliant and slender like me.
                        Holio, holio holio ho
Everyone loves me wherever I go

That stuff you’re smoking, I used to smoke too.
It got me high and then it made me blue
Quit your addiction, and have some mint tea
You can be clean and clear-headed like me.
                        Holio, holio holio ho
Everyone loves me wherever I go

I help the needy and I volunteer
Everyone tells me they’re glad I live here
Except the deluded and drug-addled few
Who like to hang out with a loser like you.
                        Holio, holio holio ho
Everyone loves me wherever I go

Songs of Praise

SONGS OF PRAISE
(Dave Taylor)

From neat suburban gardens to the sound of the church bells
They come from north, south, east and west as the congregation swells
Last night there were only fifteen souls now they're pouring through the doors
It's not because they're serving Theakston's, no they're here because they're going to be appearing on...

Songs of praise, oh songs of praise
To the cameras we will sing
In soprano, tenor or baritone voice
Those loud hosannas ring
All in all we can all agree
That Jesus Christ was a Conservative MP,
I'll open my mouth wide 'till it fills the TV screen
'Cos I'm on songs of praise
Yes, I'm on songs of praise.

The church is decorated with the Dahlia and the Rose
To cover any nasty smells that might get up one's nose
I looked in the mirror and a vision I beheld
In velvet jacket and dicky bow tie
I hope my boss is watching me
That star of screen as I'm here singing on...

Songs of praise, oh songs of praise

On weekdays I count silver and gold and fight the material fight
They say I'd probably sell my own grandmother
If the price was right
But now I sing to raise the roof I miss my mobile phone
To see if my shares in "Granny's 'r' Us" have multiplied and grown while I've been singing..

Songs of praise, oh songs of praise..

I'll put on more vibrato to be better heard and seen
The Royal Opera or even Sir Cliff might even notice me
God moves in mysterious ways to fulfil the financial dreams
Of one poor lonely rentacreep just trying to shove that camel Through the eye of that needle singing...

Songs of praise, oh songs of praise..

I'm oozing extreme unction out of every single pore
As I carry on singing in this silly voice
So smiling and cocksure
I'm such a pillar of righteousness a modern miracle to behold
Well, who would believe that underneath it all
I'm such a complete arsehole as I'm here singing..

Songs of Praise, oh songs of praise...

And you won't see my arse for dust next week
When there's no more Songs of Praise
..Amen...

Everybody Talkin’ ‘bout Heaven
Rick Pollay (2020)

Chorus based on a riff by Acappella on an old black gospel concept
Verses: Trad. Melody, cf. John Henry, Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OIbf6XWsRI

Everybody talkin’ ‘bout heaven ain’t goin’ there
Everybody talkin’ ‘bout heaven ain’t goin’
Everybody talkin’ ‘bout heaven ain’t goin’ there
        No, No, No (all x2)

1. Not even all of the preachers
‘Tho they talk up heaven so well
Some can’t wait for the cash in their plate
So they can raise some hell, Lord, Lord
So they can raise some hell.

2. and some preach that the bible
        tells us science to deny.
But we get our birth here from Mother Earth,
not some father off in the sky, No, No
Not some father off in the sky.
                CHORUS

3. Not all those eager merchants
with their prices set sky high
They’ll help you get it with their easy credit
and fine print to bleed you dry, Lord, Lord
Fine print to bleed you dry.

4. Not all those corporate CEOs
‘tho they may go to church
They took gobs and gobs when they sold our jobs
and left us in the lurch, Lord, Lord
They left us in the lurch.
                CHORUS

5. Not all those high priced lawyers
with their clever scams and schemes
helping business crooks to cook their books
while they rob us of our dreams, Lord, Lord
They rob us of our dreams

6. Not all those in Congress
‘So smooth – sweet talkin’ lies
Some boast and gloat just to get our vote
but never hear our cries, No, No
        They never hear our cries.

        CHORUS

7. Not all those courtly judges
‘Tho dressed in robes so fine
Some set big bail or send you straight to jail
‘Less you toe their color line, Lord, Lord
You must toe their color line.

8. and not all of the po-lice
        Well-armed and pumped to attack
Some shoot to kill just for the thrill
Of gunnin’ down a black, Lord, Lord
        Gunnin’ down a black.

Everybody talkin’ ‘bout heaven ain’t goin’ there!
        No … No … No!

The Vicar is a Beatnik by Sydney Carter, where it's not the vicar who is the hypocrite. I'm not keen on Carter's tune but the lyrics also fit to several well known hymns so singers can take their pick.
