Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: John in Brisbane Date: 22 Oct 00 - 07:46 PM MMario,
Sent you a couple of big emails with attachments of 1.3 and 0.7 Megs. Before I send anymore I'd better make sure I haven't clogged up your inbox. Regards, John |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: John in Brisbane Date: 22 Oct 00 - 07:20 PM Alice, you had my interest there for a while as I was looking at the score for Miss Fogerty's only last week. I'm glad MMario stepped in or I'd have gone back to find it.
I've been promising for ages to do a MIDI for The Agricultural Irish Girl, so would appreciate please if someone else could volunteer. There is a separate thread on the subject and a high quality image was refernced by Dale Rose.
I found the reference that 'Wheel of Fortune' had been posted.
Regards, John |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: MMario Date: 22 Oct 00 - 12:52 PM Miss Fogerty's has been "found". I can send a list of those still "missing" to anyone who would like to PM me an e-mail address. MMario |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 22 Oct 00 - 12:44 PM Alice - you can list them here or PM me. I didn't see them on MMario's list, but then my list is quite long and quite old. I can easily make a melody midi from sheet music. |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: Alice Date: 22 Oct 00 - 11:46 AM I should have worded my message more clearly. I have a recording of Agricutural Irish Girl, but I can't make a midi. I can make an MP3 - who can make a midi if I send them an MP3? I'm not good enough at writing abc to do a version. Also, in going through Christmas songs in the DT last night, I found that Mrs. Fogarty's Christmas Cake is missing the tune. The sheet music for Mrs. Fogarty's Christmas Cake is in the Lester Levy collection website. There are some other Christmas carols without tunes in the DT, also. Where should I list those tune requests? Here, or in separate threads? |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: John in Brisbane Date: 22 Oct 00 - 03:22 AM MM, I gather that someone has found tune to 'Wheel of Fortune'? I couldn't find a ref to it. Regards, John |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: MMario Date: 21 Oct 00 - 12:22 PM Alice - miditxt or abc can be posted here, or a link here and the tune posted to the agricultural irish girl thread. a midi can be sent to alan of oz. |

Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: MMario Date: 20 Oct 00 - 09:13 AM Bruce - no, I do not have an edit function. With your permission I will forward your posting to Dick G - (or you can do it yourself) I think the changes have to be done in the DT itself, not just the website. |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: Noreen Date: 20 Oct 00 - 07:20 AM Louie Roy, if you go back to the 'Lyrics, Forum & Chat' page and click on 'create a new thread', then put the title of your hymn in your thread title, you'll get more response than buried in this thread. Good luck Noreen |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: GUEST,Bruce O. Date: 20 Oct 00 - 02:37 AM MMario, can you switch text around in DT files? "The brisk young lad" in DT file BRISKLAD doesn't have a tune. The song without music or tune direction is in Herd's 'Scots Songs', II, 1776, and with music in 'The Scots Musical Museum', #219 (1790) and I have the tune there, and versions of it as early as 1740, and there's even an ABC of a version of c 1778 on the web. The tune in SMM may not be the original tune for the song, but it's the earliest known tune for the song. However, the song starts in the noted collections with "There came a young man to my daddy's door" and the chorus follows as "And wow, but he was a braw young lad". For some unknown reason the song is given chorus first in DT, so the tune won't fit right unless the DT text is rearranged to put chorus after the first verse. I won't do an ABC of the tune with the 2nd strain first. [I've got a recorded version of the song sung by Ewan MacColl that he said he learned from his mother and then he completed it from the text given by David Herd.]

Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: Sorcha Date: 18 Oct 00 - 07:53 PM I printed out the words to "Looking for That Bully of the Town" and gave them to our vocalist. We tried to sing and play it last nite (the tune I abc posted here). Some of it fits the words, but some of it doesn't, so I guess it needs to be tweaked rather heavily. We tried AABB and ABAB. Neither was exactly correct to fit the words. Sorry. But I still think it is the basic tune, because a lot of it does fit. |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: John in Brisbane Date: 18 Oct 00 - 07:29 PM Thanks MM, I don't quite know how I missed that one. Regards, John |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: IvanB Date: 18 Oct 00 - 04:30 PM John, Nottamun Town, as sung by Jean Ritchie, is listed in the DT as 'Fair Nottamun Town.' There is also a MIDI there, although it differs in a few instances from the one in Jean Ritchie's 'Celebrations' songbook. I'm not familiar with the Fairport Convention version, but the tune in the DT is also fairly close to your abc. |

Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: GUEST,John in Brisbane Date: 18 Oct 00 - 07:12 AM THE GLENBURGH WOOL was written by poet Jack Sorensen with music by John Joseph Jones. It's taken me ages to find this tune but tracked it down as part of the Folk Music Series of the 1964 Adelaide Festival of the Arts where a number of Jones original compositions were performed and recorded. The citation in the DT gives an incorrect spelling for Glenburgh (Western Australia) and as I recall also mispells Sorensen.
Sending a MIDI to MMario.

Subject: Lyrics wanted From: Louie Roy Date: 18 Oct 00 - 12:03 AM Can anyone help with the words to a Hymn The name could be "Take me back to Calvary". Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: John in Brisbane Date: 12 Oct 00 - 08:07 PM Thanks MM, I reviewed the Forum and remembered that Dale Rose had found an on-line GIF at Library of Congress (or similar). I had promised to notate the tune but have not prior to this. I found the song in print in 'Irish Music Hall' from MCA/MILLS - no publication date.
Of the 70 or so songs in this volume of 'American Irish' songs there are probably three others that would warrant attention: If You're Irish Come Into The Parlor (missing tune in DT) Irish Jaunting Car (popular in my parent's era) With My Shilelagh Under My Arm (music hall classic) It also includes a number of songs that are in the DT, where authors are nominated. While I can't guarantee their authenticity I'll mention them now. The Moonshiner - Delya Murphy MCMXXXIX - Walton's of Dublin Harrigan - George M Cohan MCMVII Isle of Innisfree - Dick Farrely MCML Peter Maurice Music London Courtin in the Kitchen - Delya Murphy MCMXKII - Walton's Dublin Wearin Of The Green - Lyrics by Dion Boucicault 1942 - Mills Music Killarney - MW Balfe 1942 - Mills Music I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen - Thomas P Westendorf 1942 - Mills Music Regards, John

Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing Tunes Wanted -IV From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 05 Oct 00 - 09:41 PM Three more midis and a note:
THE CROPPIE BOY filename[ CROPPIE1 Transcribed from a record? Colm O Lochlainn gives this version in Irish Street Ballads vol.2, and comments:
HENRY JOY MCCRACKEN filename[ HENRYJO2 No source named. Midi made from the version in Colm O Lochlainn's Irish Street Ballads vol.1 O Lochlainn comments:
RISE UP JOCK filename[ RISEJOCK Transcribed from a record by Roberts and Barrand, who seem to have made numerous alterations, mostly small but in a few cases very annoying, to the song written by Bob Pegg (who is not credited in the entry). I've put parallel texts in a separate thread, here: Rise Up Jock: original version midi made from Pegg's original recording, on He Came from the Mountains (Bob and Carole Pegg, Trailer LER 3016, 1971)
Note:
THE WOMEN ARE WORSE THAN THE MEN filename[ DEVLWIF5 This is the version from Colm O Lochlainn's Irish Street Ballads vol.1; presumably that is the version of which John of Brisbane has already sent in a midi. O Lochlainn had the song from D. Maguire of Belfast in 1912. The text in the DT completely fails to mention that there is an interlaced refrain, and also omits the first verse. Here it is, showing how the song was actually sung: Malcolm |
