Bill will appear at the Advent Lutheran Church in New York City (Broadway & West 93rd Street) on Thursday, May 10, 2001, at 8:00 PM. High Powered A Capella Duo at Polytechnic in Pinewoods ³Folk Off-Broadway² Series.

The NexTradition, traditional a capella singers Ken Schatz and Alison Kelley, will appear at Wunsch Hall, Polytechnic University in Brooklyn on Friday evening, April 6, 2001, as part of the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club¹s ³Folk Off-Broadway² concert series produced in cooperation with the school. The show starts at 8:00 PM sharp. General admission is $10. Pinewoods members pay only $9, and Polytechnic students will be admitted free.

The NexTradition -- called TNT for short -- can best be described as traditional music in motion. Two voices. Dangerous harmonies. Goose-bump images. Driving rhythms and roaring choruses. Born in June 1997 at the Mystic Sea Music Festival in Mystic, Connecticut, The NexTradition was christened by Heather Wood (of The Young Tradition) on the back of a beer menu a few months later.

TNT performs traditional music from North America, the British Isles, and around the world: sea songs and chanteys, Gospel and blues, work songs of the railroads, mines, prisons, factories, and fields.

Wunsch Hall, the Polytechnic University student center, is located in Metrotech Center in downtown Brooklyn, easily accessible by public transportation. The nearest subway stop is Lawrence Street on the M, N. and R lines. Ample parking is available after 7:00 PM.

Thanks for posting this correction. For this coming April only, the Open Mike will take place on the fourth Wednesday, i.e. April 25, 2001.

Beginning in May, the Open Mike will be held on the third Wednesday of each month, as it had been at the three previous locations.

Our six free to members concerts a year tend to be top drawing act s such as Bruce Moslky or Bill Staines. But we also book acts for the Folk Off Broadway concert series and other events. Evy can really give you some guidance.

As a matter of fact, Sorcha Dorcha did send a CD to Evy, one which recieved rather good responce from other mudcatters. After a long wait to recieve a note that the CD arived, which was not forthcoming, I sent an email to ask if it was lost in transit. Evy, who is a very nice polite person, by the by, told me she recieved it and to be patient. I have a sneeking suspicion that Pineswoods is a wee tad cliqish when it comes to booking, as responce from our concerts, including the Aimee Goodman show in exile tends to lead me to the conclution that we are a good band. I have seen Sorcha Dorcha live. Even paid to get in. A moving, wonderful experience. These are talented performers who shine under Larry's guidance. And AGAIN: Larry's tribute to Amadou Diallo is proof that folk music is alive and well and living (in this case, in NYC).

I'd join alison here. The Pinewoods Concerts sound great and I was kinda' wondering myself why they have not included Sorcha Dorcha. Like alison, I too have the CD and I know Sinsull and others have seen them live. I wish I lived in NYC from that standpoint.....lots of good stuff there. If I did, Larry's group would be the first I'd go hear.....not because he's a 'Catter, but because I've listened to the CD repeatedly and it's great! Sinsull loved the performance even more than the CD so to me, that says a lot. Both traditional and topical, the "Ballad of Amadou Diallo" is a killer BTW............Larry, whatever Pinewoods likes or doesn't, you have one helluva' group and some serious songwriting skills.

I'm a member of the NY Pinewoods board of directors, so I won't comment on Larry's concern regarding cliquishness. However, I did speak to Evy Mayer last night and not only had she received the Sorcha Dorcha CD, she reminded me that the program committee presented Sorcha Dorcha along with dozens of other performers to be considered by the board. Without revealing specifics, which would certainly be unethical, let me point out that what the board of directors does is PRIORITIZE the performers who are presented to us. We then leave it up to the program committee to book the acts with the highest priority for our series concerts, of which there are 6 per year free to members. These are decent paying and widely publicized gigs, and the competition is fierce. The same goes for the performers at our weekend retreats, i.e. lots of artists are considered for relatively few slots.

New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club also sponsors and cosponsors smaller events, for which the booking is entirely up to the program committee. These include our Folk Off Broadway concerts currently being held at Polytechnic Univerity in Brooklyn. Once again, Evy Mayer (Ukelady) is the person to contact.

Finally, we conduct many workshops which either pay relatively little or are strictly volunteer. For example, we will have quite a few workshops at our annual Ed Fest on November 17, 2001. Hi Steve, Cliquishness is not always either concious or a result of bad intentions. It is often that folks tend to hire the bands they are used to ... and some bands have to struggle like hell to get noticed - swim up streem. An example is the way the Irish Republican community hires Morning Star to play at every event. Fact is they are a wonderful band and Mary is a good a pal as I can name. However, it makes it immossible to get newer bands going. After thrity years of activism, after busking on the streets of every englsih speaking city - queit a few towns, and a few french speaking places as well, after supporting other bands, there just comes a time when one has to start standing up for one's propers. So... think of some of us in the margins, when booking is all I ask. - Larry

Sounds like quite a bureaucracy you've got going there, Steve! I've got that Sorcha Dorcha CD, and it's certainly impressive - great songs and a terrific sound.

OK, a CD can't tell you everything, but if that's how some of the decisions have to be made these days, Sorcha Dorcha must be in with a shout. On top of which, there's someone here who reckons they're even better live, and you've surely got to take that seriously. Maybe you could form an ad-hoc sub-committee to review their position in the priority list and submit a discussion paper?

Hi Larry!

There are hundreds of members at Pinewoods but, as you see from what Steve Suffet wrote above, the people who decide what music Pinewoods will present are the people who do the work at Pinewoods. They choose according to their own experience, their own taste and their own agendas. That is the reality of the situation.

Steve has more or less suggested to you that you perform at a "no pay" gig for the club. The benefit to you is that you would be heard "live" by some of those decision makers. You just make want to talk to the band about that.

Thanks Dan, I would be happy to play a no pay gig, and in fact, let lots of the Pinewoods folk know about our People's Voice Cafe gig, in hopes they'd give us a try. They did not come to my knowlege to that gig, so I'd be happy to do a no pay gig. One clarification, as my band members are union folks, there is no such thing as a no pay gig, no pay means I pay them, which is a real hardship when there are so few venues in New York that pay. Hey there all -- I am the current President of NY Pinewoods and would like to clarify a few things.

Prior to my presidency (now in the 5th month) I served for many years on the Program Committee and I can share with you that the goal of the committee was to recommend a variety of performers (here meaning single, duo, group, etc.) of varying levels, and those well-known as well as relatively unknown.

Often the committee recommends a performer one of us heard at a festival or concert somewhere - relatively unknown, but good. Other sources of suggestions for performers come from the members themselves through letters, through promotional material sent to us (through out Program Chair or President or other board or Club member.) New member packages include requests for suggestions for performers. We are constantly looking for performers that may be little known but who we believe our members would enjoy AND turn out to hear. It is though, a somewhat bureaucratic process - sometimes out of necessity. But that is to ensure we DO bring our members a varied program with opportunities to hear new people, as well as some of their favorites. We do have a budget to consider though and sometimes we cannot afford some performers.

There are many non Pinewoods members out there who say they would be members if...

I would suggest becoming a member and becoming a voice in the organization -- we DO listen to what our members say and want them to be involved. We also listen to non-members and take into consideration what they say.

The Pinewoods Board is an all-volunteer group, working very hard for its membership. The people who make up the Board have very diverse backgrounds and each has his/her own musical tastes, but each endeavors to help the club bring quality performers for club events, whether it be through the Music at Polytech series in Brooklyn, the Series Concerts, other small venue concerts (house concerts, etc.), or weekend getaways where you have an opportunity to be up close and personal with performers at workshops and other settings. (all of these are open to non-members as well at a higher fee.) We also endeavor to provide community singing/playing opportunities to members through the open sings in Brooklyn and now Queens, sacred harp sings, and others that right now I cannot bring to the front of my mind.

The main agenda of the club is to provide opportunities for our membership to listen to good/great performers, meet and hear new performers, learn some new musical skill, join in community sings, round robins, etc,; have a place to perform (the camper's concerts on our weekends, the traditional open mike, the Brooklyn sings, and other events), make new musical friends, and have some fun.

We do have some opportunities for no pay/little pay gigs such as our edfest (presented in conjunction with Country Dance New York) which is a mini-NOMAD type event held on one day, as well as some other benefit events during the year. And new ideas pop up all the time. We welcome yours. And we fervently welcome new members of all ages.

Hi Joy: Having read your message three times, and enjoying it each time, I would be happy to have the band concidered for one of your free concerts, though we don't do open mics, as the set up for a five piece band, which encludes as diverce instrumentation as ours, makes open mics not possible. We have four vocalists, including Eve Zanni, well known in Jazz and Irish folk circles, Gena Tlamsa, also known in Folk and Medievil music circles, Sarah Bell, on oboe and fiddle, Bill Bell on guitar, and of course yours truely on Uilleann Pipes and vocals as well as a smatering of other things, (most of our members play about three instruments. If you need a more recent CD than the last we sent, I'd be happy to send one. If you would like I can also send you reviews of our music from such respected mudcatters as Rick Fielding. The fact is we could get much more work if we did not do the kind of songs we do, about the killing of Amadou Diallo, and just did the happy face stuff. However, though we are obstinate in our belief that art has to be couragious about the issues of our day, we are also humble enough to beg.... PLEASE GIVE US A CHANCE!!! -

Well I've got the Sorcha Orcha CD, and if a listen to it doesn't get the band a booking at Pinewoods, there are onlt two possible explanations. One would be that the bands that get booked there must be out of this world. The other is that the people doing the prioritising have their priorities in some disarray.

I'd like to think that it's the first explanation. It'd mean that folk music in New York would be on a high. But...

Sorcha Dorcha is seriously good.

The artists that New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club books for our series concerts are exceptionally accomplished. Our three most recent series concerts featured Gerret and Jeff Warner, Bruce Molksy, and Bill Staines, respectively. That record speaks for itself!

I don't know about you all, but I caught Sorcha Dorcha, someplace, I think it may have been at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival or something like that... Well! That guy Larry was playing An Phis Fluich on the Uileann pipes, while singing a song about a guy from the "Decency in Gaelic Song Titles Brotherhood of Drunks" in the front row who was heckling them, making the song up on the spot, while kicking a sleeping band mate awake with his toe... at the same time, Sarah the Gammon Bell was shooting dried peas out of her oboe at the heckler, while not missing a note of the tune, her husband Bill, Dr. O'Fez Bell was playing the guitar and composing his a response to his doctoral thesis, on a laptop computer, typing with his bare feet, Gena Tlamsa was painting a picture of James Galway hugging Joe Stalin, while also playing the tune with her free hand, Eve Carrol Zanni was singing a harmony while drinking a Cranberry and Seltzer spritzer, and it all sounded GREAT!
Now you tell me you have a band more accomplished than that!!!! I should hope NOT!

The gig only vaguely rings a bell, though, the Bell it rings is a recolection of Bill's Thesis on wether a fez works better than tin foil to amplify the voices in your head. Tin foil, if I remember right, can repell voices only if it is worn shiny side out, - where if you wear it shiny side in, the voices get louder... or so our neighbors who live on the streets of New York's lower east side tell me. I have been known to kick bandmates while playing and to write satires on the spot, and An Phis Fluich has been objected to by the organisation you state, as the title does translate badly, or well depending on your opinion of things in general.
But Accomplishment is a funny thing. Is it more accomplished to keep producing work apreciated by those who hear you, when those who wield the reins of employment ignore you - going for the safe choices, or is it accomplished to have courted the Tzars of the folk industry well enough to count on work. I don't know, dear old Omar, but if you keep listening, we will keep playing, even if it is in the subway, as it often is, to busk up enough to pay my bandmates.
