Subject: AOL, email,porn
From: Roger in Sheffield

My bosses wife keeps on mentioning that at home they receive explicit emails, they use AOL. I truthfully say that I have never received any such material and I use several different ISPs
Any AOL users out there? What do you think? Is someone playing tricks on them - giving out there email address as a sick joke. And what can they do stop these emails? I explained that using outlook express you can block emails containing certain words, but I am guessing that AOL doesn't use Outlook Express?
From the conversation I had today what Claire describes sounds more like the headers of some of the more unsavoury newsgroups, I tried to explain newgroups to her but she seems to think that these are emails. Any suggestions would be welcome as she is concerned that her children may see these dirty messages

If Claire is worried about her kids seeing dirty messages, she should make sure the parental controls are set properly for her children's screen names. That should filter out most of the unpleasantness. I have AOL (as does half the globe and they are usually all logged in when I want to be but that's a different story) and only have encountered such unwanted e-mail after I ordered on-line (no, I didn't order porno stuff!). I'm assuming my mailing information was sold to some junk e-mail distributor. I really haven't spent the time looking under the controls but I would guess Claire could set certain mail types to automatically be sent to her recycle bin so they won't be in her new messages folder.

I have a theory about this.

I'm forever hearing people moaning that they have received porn over the net, totally unsolicited of course! I reckon it's just the cookie system at work - in other words, if people have porno related cookies on their hard drive, other porno sites will be connected to them through their cookies.

So what is probably happening is that the people who complain most about getting unsolicited porn are causing it themselves by having visited porn sites in the first place - ahaa, gotcha!!

Possible?

Cheers, Terry

Possible, but having a cookie on your hard drive doesn't connect to your email address, but to your 'puter. Or am I misunderstanding the nature of cookies?

I'm getting tons of porn email on my yahoo address, and I never get to look at juicy sites, because if they catch you with that stuff on your hard-drive at work, you're out the door.

So it may explain some cases, but not all.

I only have 'net access at work, and I get tons of x-rated spam e-mail at my hotmail account. My son has access at his father's house, and doesn't get any at his Yahoo account. Go figure.

Want less AOL Spam? Stay out of AOL Chat Rooms! There are thousands of bots (robots) out on the web that do nothing but scan AOL chat rooms for user names. Since user names on AOL are the same as email addresses its a no brainier. Second, turn cookies off in the web browser. Cookies are just plain evil, why would someone need to put a program on your machine to view a web site? Answer, They don't. You can write a cookie to do about anything. It may not be legal in the US, but you think a web dev or a script kiddies in North Korea cares about that? Not! Lastly, never give your real email address to a website that asks for it. If you must fill out a form use a phony email address or get a free one from yahoo or hotmail and use it as a Spam address. 99% of the reason you get junk mail is because you're a newbie and don't know any better yet. Don't sweat it, you will learn over the next couple of months as long as PAY ATTENTION!!!! Many people bag on AOL but remember, it runs on UNIX. Its way stable and very hard to hack from anything else but another UNIX machine.

Go here and download Ad-Aware (free download) and run it. You may be very surprised at what you find lurking on your computer. (Ad-aware is a spy-ware sniffer, and replaces the old trusty Opt-Out program.) Spyware are invisible cookies planted on your system (by certain companies including Qualcomm - makers of Eudora, as well as the manufacturers of Cute FTP, and many other shareware and freeware distributors as well) which act as transponders and send back to their originators aspects of your surfing habits and the types of web sites you visit, as well as the types of software you download.

I just discovered that Eudora adds a special folder to initiate spyware, and eventhough Ad-Aware removed it when it found it, everytime I re-launch Eudora it reinitializes the spyware (and I have a paid, registered copy). The unregistered copies show ads, but I mistakenly thought this was all eliminated by using the paid version. There is also a bill before Congress to ban all spyware, and Qualcomm and other companies have been singled out.

I would agree with Guest web dev above. The only time I have recieved any quantity of spam, salacious or otherwise, is after using the Mudcat ICQ chat room. Since I had a disk crash and lost ICQ I've not had any problems.

Yeah, but we got a whole load of Russian porn loaded when we first logged on, before we even got a return address!! It's scary when you open your mailbox for the first time to confirm ownership, to find it full of naked Russian shotputters..... It took months to convince them that I didn't want to see naked Russians of any/indeterminate sex.

Hotmail's a complete pain - but if you have to use it, make sure you activate the bulk mail folder. Any stuff sent out by automatic mailers should go straight to this folder - 99.99% of it will be total crap, and it can be set to "die" after a set period so you don't have to view it or deal with it.
Whatever you do don't reply to junk mail - most of the time the reply-to addresses are fake, and you're only putting your e-mail address out into the world for anyone to grab.
Don't use your e-mail address on Usenet, either. Tweak it instead - if you'r joe.soap@anywhere.com, adjust your posting prefs so that you become joe.soap@234564anywhere.com, and in your sig mention that anyone wanting genuinely to reply to you should remove the 234564. That will prevent automatic "harvester" programs from churning through the groups and swiping your e-mail address for sale to spammers.
And report persistent offenders to sites like spamcop.com. Spam is unsolicited and often very offensive -and it has damn-all to do with your browsing habits (but if you must trawl through a lot of porn sites, don't be surprised if your spam-count goes through the roof ).

I use ICQ......... admittedly for private chats with friends.. not the chat rooms.... and have stayed invisible for a long time... I'm usually there but you can't see me unless I allow you to.......

this + the usual privacy features spares you from most of the "do you wanna cyber" crap...........

occasionally you will get sent a porno URL... but its easy.. if you don't want to look.. then don't open the link..... just delete it

I would be very careful about letting kids have unsupervised access to either ICQ or Paltalk (or all the similar chat type things)... there are a lot of weirdos out there...........

Man goes to see a doctor. Doctor comes into examining room and says to the man "how can I help you?"

Man says "before I tell you my problem you have to promise me you won't laugh and I'm serious about this." Doctor assures him he is a highly trained, qualified professional and there is nothing the man could possibly show him that could trigger laughter.

Feeling assured, the man removes his pants and lowers his underwear. He has the smallest penis the doctor has ever seen, and try as he might, the Doctor loses it and doubles over into uncontrollable bursts of laughter.

After a few minutes the Doctor regains his composure and profusely apologizes to the man, and says "I'm really sorry. So, what seems to be the problem?"

Man says "it's swollen".

Also, when you sign up to the "free" email services, uncheck the box that puts you in the member directory.

I did that with my yahoo email, and have not had spam there yet.

Unfortunately, my hotmail address was previously used by someone else... and I had spam there within minutes of signing up.

I have received hotmail crap since day one. But nothing came through on AOL until my son used my computer. I have dropped cookies, cleaned temporary files, etc. but still get invitations to all sorts of parties. So now I delete them without opening them. They are pretty easy to spot.

I did wonder if my boss had been sneeking a peek at Porn sites, but to be honest he is always at work and would probably be looking more interested in looking at printing machines than porn. Someone mentioned Chat Rooms though and I do remember him mentioning a while back that he had tried a few of those, don't think he does anymore. So how do they 'clean' their computer, or do they just get another email address?

One simple solution is to set up a 'message rule' which spots anything with XXX in the body of the message, and moves it into the 'deleted' folder.

If you also set your preferences so that the 'deleted' folder is automatically emptied at the end of a session, and you'll get rid of a large percentage of the gunk.

It's not a complete solution, but it helps.

I always avoid 'replying to unsubscribe' for reasons already mentioned by others - if you ignore them, they eventually go away!

Many thankx to Justa Picker for the link to AdAware. I downloaded it and ran it and found no less than 27 invisible cookies all over the place including the registry. I have never visited the websites concerned, in my case Comet Cursor and web3000 so I can only assume they came from some discussion groups and newsgroups to which I am subscribed. Its a great no fuss free programme. Everybody should run this. Big Brother is alive and well and living in the circuitry of YOUR computer. Make sure you consign him to Room 101. Phil Seddon. It always amazes me why, when 'it is so easy to become a millionaire', that anybody works anymore...If anybody can get rich, why isn't everybody rich and retired? Bet yer booty if I ever get that rich I won't spend my days sitting at this keyboard trying to make the rest of the world rich also...

Or how about the e-mail that if you don't pass it on to ten people immediately you will have bad luck for eternity? Anybody ever get rich off one of those? Or the one that claims that some fool pays for every e-mail you send and that there are folks that received checks for umpteen thousand dollars a month by just sending e-mails?? How dumb do they think we are??

AOL has an option that lets you block all mail originating from outside of AOL. If you use this for a while and then go back to accepting all mail you can frustrate lots of Spam and other unwanted adverts. Additionally, you can block all mail from a specific URL, like, say, hotmail.

This can ease the spam and invites to see Russians of any ilk.

Bernard I explained that I can use 'message rules' in Outlook Express to block certain words, I am guessing though that AOL does not use OE and I wanted to know if it has a message rules option?
Is it possible to use other email accounts while using AOL, could they set up say a Hotmail account as well (to use instead) or set up another ISP and use their email?

Unfortunately, they aren't usually using anything so obvious as xxx in the headers for the ones I'm getting. It's usually "Hi" or "What have you been doing lately?" ...you know, just the sort of thing that your friends write to you about.

Except that my friends don't have addresses like h123gsh91@whatever.com...

I think that's also why I always try to write mail with interesting, descriptive headers. Not just "Hi..."

Bernard, the trouble with canning anything the XXX in the body text is that I'd lose all those wonderful mails from admirers signing off with smoochy kisses.
Come to think of it, I haven't had one of those for yonks anyway.
D'you think the latest version of OE for Mac already has that filter, and that in some folder there are dozens of warm salacious mails waiting for me?
Or perhaps not.

I must admit, when I saw the name of this thread I presumed it was another silly conversation aimed at getting under the skin of one or another ... but when I saw it persist for some time, I thought 'maybe it's not what I think it is ...' so I looked in.

I haven't been plagued by the porn solicting messages, but I've received some, over the years for no apparent reason. I am not particularly bothered by 'em, I simply delete 'em. I do received 20 to 30 junk mails every day - not surprising since I purposely signed up for many many web-based services about a year ago, because I was researching this very subject (junk adevrtizing; not porn ads). I've decided that when I'm tired of the jusk, I'll chane my ISP and/or Email addr, and never give it out again.

I was curious though, so I checked out the Ad-Aware free download (thanks Just-a-Picker) and ran it. I found 20 some spy programs hidden among my files. I cleanned 'em up , and set the app to run and auto delete everytime I boot up my PC.

I haven't disabled cookies, though. How do youlog in here without a cookie? And what about the other sites that use them, where I might want to use their service?
