The north wind doth blow
And we shall have snow
And what will ... do then, poor thing?
(Each verse has a different insert)

Poor robin ... he'll sit in a barn,
And keep himself warm,
And hide his head under his wing, poor thing

The swallow ... oh, do you not know,
He's off long ago,
To a country where he will find spring...

The dormouse ... rolled up like a ball,
In his nest snug and small,
He'll sleep till warm weather comes in...

The honey-bee ... in his hive he will stay.
Till the cold is away,
And then he'll come out in the spring...

The children ... when lessons are done,
They must skip, jump and run,
Until they have made themselves warm...

The robin and the redbreast, the robin and the wren,
If you take them out of their nest, you'll never thrive again
The robin and the redbreast, the martin and the swallow,
If you touch one of their eggs, ill luck is sure to follow

There was a wee bit mousiekie,
That lived in Gilberaty-o,
It couldno' get a bite o' cheese,
For cheatie pussy cattie-o,
It said unto the cheeseky,
Oh fain would I be at ye-o,
If 'twere no' for the cruel claws
Of cheatie pussy cattie-o

John Cook had a little grey mare,
He haw hum
Her back stood up and her bones were bare,
He haw hum
(Lines 2 and 4 repeat in each verse)

John Cook was riding up Shuter's Bank...
And there his nag did kick and prank
John Cook was riding up Shuter's Hill...
His mare fell down and she made her will...
The bridle and saddle were laid on the shelf...
If you want any more you must make it yourself...

Will post more tomorrow.

Here's to Cheshire, here's to cheese -- my favorite of the Froggy went a-courting crowd. Also, I have an album of Ed McCurdy singing childrens' songs, which is just lovely. Fairly traditional renditions, including THe Little Black Bull Come Down the Meadow and others nobody else has heard of. Someday with a lot of time, I'll do a bunch of Lyrics Adds. Do a trad/forum search for Woodpecker, I added a great song but it doesn't pop up on the searches yet.

Murray on Saltspings' massive collection of Scottish ones is already in DT. Search DT for 'MS', also search on 'WBO' as some of his are mistakenly attributed to me. Another good source is J. O. Halliwell's 'The Nursery Rhymes of England', several editions, (one reprinted) and not all the same. Many are rare ones not in the Mother Goose type of collections.

My Mother said, I never should
Play with the gypsies in the wood.
If I did, she would say;
'Naughty girl to disobey!
Your hair shan't curl and your shoes shan't shine,
You gypsy girl, you shan't be mine!
And my father said that if I did,
He'd rap my head with the teapot lid.
My mother said that I never should
Play with the gypsies in the wood.
The wood was dark, the grass was green;
By came Sally with a tambourine.
I went to sea - no ship to get across;
I paid ten shillings for a blind white horse.
I upped on his back and was off in a crack,
Sally tell my mother I shall never come back

My mother said is a hand-clapping rhyme.

I had a little pony, his name was Dapple-grey.
I lent him to a lady to ride a mile away
She whipped him, she lashed him, she drove him through the mire.
I wouldn't lend my pony now, for all the lady's hire.

Don't care didn't care, don't care was wild.
Don't care stole plum and pear like any beggar's child.
Don't care was made to care, don't care was hung:
Don't care was put in the pot and boiled till he was done.

I was always told

Don't care was made to care
don't care was hung
don't care was put in prison and made to play the drum.

this appears to be a version no one else knows could it just be a family variation?

The little pony, his coat was dapple gray. It is a descriptor, not a name.

We also had the following poem which was a reply to bratty kids who said, "I don't care," to adults....

Don't care didn't care, don't care was wild
Don't care stole plum and pear like any beggars child.
Don't care was MADE to care
Don't care was hung
Don't care was put in a pot and boiled till he was done.

I remember seeing this in a book that also contained the infamous little girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead.   Never saw the prison version. Must be a family thing.
