Subject: I need some tune names!! From: GUEST,Sam Pirt Date: 23 Apr 01 - 09:55 AM Hi I am currently in a tune writing phase and have written 4 tunes in the last two days and many more are about to be composed. The only trouble is that I needs some names!! If possible I would like: 1 - The tune name 2 - The story behind the name you have suggested This is for real and any suggestions I like I WILL use. My dog was called Butch, but we used to call him the black pig cos, that's what he looked like. He never got passed puppyhood, even though he was about 14 when he died. He used to spring about like lamb, chewed everything in sight and when he barked it sounded as if he was saying woof. If you used this for a tune it would have to be kind of light and puppyish

The proven Stephen Foster method is to glace through an atlas for places you have never been. Alternatively, my Irish ancestors seemed to have worked off of two lists. A was a list of all known (or unknown) historical figures from the Green Isle. The other was a list of every type of musical composition known to man, plus about a dozen great words like "Farewell," "Resurrection," "Return," "Revenge," etc. The beauty is that with only 200 people and 20 musical or generic terms, you would have 4000 song titles, all on the model of "Bonaparte's Revenge," "Tarleton's Resurrection," etc. On the other side of my brain, I don't think one person should name another person's song, especially without hearing it. Gotta go. Need to head down to the music store & put an an order for "Sam Pirt's Blues." CC |

The name was "Little Dorrie". Second I named for myself, sort of: "Pop's Progress." Third, in honor of my son-in-law, who is known far and wide as "Dancin' Bob". When my daughter was a baby she was the kickingest baby you've ever seen--not just bicycle-pedaling, but kick-kick-kick! I had just read a novel which referred to a historical Indian chief, Kicking Bird, so she became known around our house as "Kickin' Bird,", and so the next tune was "Kickin' Bird". I have another tune in the works, and it may have a family reference name or maybe a reference to our street name, which is Crow's Nest Drive. In any case, there are lots of them right there in your own experience and environs, and they are less likely than many to be something that's been used. Dave Oesterreich |

I try to get a feeling for what the tune makes me imagine. This is very hard to do with no idea of what a tune sounds like, not to mention whether it's a jig, reel, etc. "Flying Without Wings" was serious, but I'm not entirely sure someone already hasn't come up with a tune by that name. "Up For Air" isn't that wacky. Hey, if I can name a tune "Farewell to Reason," what do you expect? |

Many of you say that I should name the tune after how I am feeling at the time or what ot says to me and I have alreay used that method I just though that by putting it to the catters I may just get that bit more 'individual' or 'extrovert' (probabaly spelt wrong) suggestions that would be very entertaining and very memorable. Keep them coming and when I decided on some names I'll let you know. I will also try to get them on the mudcat resources, along with Broken Plate (sorry Jeri I'm in my finals and a bit busy) and a special day. Cheers, Sam |

From: Grab Date: 24 Apr 01 - 12:14 PM I'm partway through writing a tune for guitar which is quite twisted - some bits are nice and symmetrical, and others are seriously asymmetric. So it's called Air Symmetric. But the better answer is "because it is" - the name came to mind, and to me it was so clearly the name of the tune that trying to explain it seemed banal. I've got a fiddle tune which is as yet unnamed - I'm just waiting for a similar stroke of lightning to name that one. Graham. |

Sam try all the suggested methodologies (once), some may seem naff but what they can produce occasionally is quite another matter. If so, be aware of the powerful All-Ireland Board for the Perpetuation of Enigmatic Tune Names. They are behind such names as "Upstairs in the Tent," "Take Her Out and Air Her," and "The Caravat and Shanavest." These are actual tunes from the Roche Collection. Scotland has the Tune-Names Board. They like several kinds of names. One favored kind is the name almost as long as the tune, such as "Lieutenant Colonel Angus MacGillicuddy's Farewell to Loch Dubh." Another kind makes reference to booze, but in a cute way. A third uses funny spelling, as in "The Twa Plagies." Come to think of it, adding "ies" to an ordinary word will likely win their approval. Don't run afoul of these people if you seek fame and fortune!

I've known traditional musicians who knew many nameless tunes. You want to put something at the top of the page when you write'em out? Then it might be a description of the tune that means something to you, i.e. "The tune I wrote while waiting to hear from the bank." You want people to smile, or nod meaningfully, or groan, when you announce the name before playing it? Then you're a writer, and can follow much of the advice already given, which boils down to: "Be clever." You write so many tunes, and don't read music, and have a real problem remembering the great tune you composed last thursday but think that a good name will help you? Good Luck. As someone else suggested, a phrase that echoes a main phrase is probably your best bet: " MacIntyre was Almost Bald". Otherwise, let your biographers/collectors/fans of the future work it out. Most of the tunes called "So-and-so's Polka", etc., were probably named by "So-and-so's" copiers and admirers. What's the big danger? That a beautiful tune is composed, lives a glorious brief life like a pitch pocket that flares in a campfire, and no-one hears it again because it's forgotten, un-named? This ferry was the main transport over the River Stour until the late 1800s when a bridge was erected. I have an old photo of a bewhiskered, ragged fellow standing upright in a rowboat and holding a punting oar. On the stern is emblazoned the grand name Maid of the Stour. So my suggestions would be "Wick Ferry" or "Maid of the Stour" as a kind of commemoration. |
