Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumper Stickers - Part FOUR From: GUEST,Songster Bob Date: 04 Jun 02 - 03:18 PM Don't know if this one is in one of the earlier threads, but I recently saw two stickers on the back of a truck. On the left, it said, "Grateful." On the right, it said, "Dead." Songbob |
Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumper Stickers - Part FOUR From: Genie Date: 04 Jun 02 - 04:04 PM Thanks, Joe-- but it isn't very funny (to me) if the word "pi" is written out. [The T-shirt also had "pi carried out to umpteen hundred decimal places on the back.) So I'll just say the sticker said:
Got Milk? Let's try holding down the "option" key on the Mac and hitting "p" [which yields the Greek symbol on my screen] and see what happens when I post it:

And an interesting thing...I was just using a new browser I am testing (Mozilla, a cousin to Netscape) and in IT the 'pi' showed up as a red "p"...whereas, in the OTHER browser I use a lot, Opera, it still shows as a red "pi"....which gives you some idea of how inexact it all is... |

Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumper Stickers - Part FOUR From: CapriUni Date: 28 Jul 02 - 08:13 PM General bumper sticker comment here... Re: "Witches Do it in Circles"... My Dad is philosophically opposed to bumper stickers, believing that they do a lot toward getting a rise out of the drivers around you without allowing the space or time to discuss the issue... and with road rage on the rise, he'd rather not drive a car with any messages, thank-you-very-much. However... Where I live, there is a Pagan organization that hosts family potluck picnics every each sabbat at a public park, and the way we find the exact meeting place is to read the bumper stickers in the adjoining parking lot. If we see a lot of "The Goddess is Alive. Magic is afoot" and "Pagan Clergy" we know we're in the right place! ;-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumper Stickers - Part FOUR From: Ian Darby Date: 29 Jul 02 - 08:52 PM The Fortean Times did a great range of UFO related bumper stickers, one read something like 'Stay back 25 feet, Alien bodies in back of vehicle'. In the U.K. we've got drivers showing stickers that say, 'Caution, Show Dogs/Cats/Gerbils/Guinea Pigs/Hamsters/Headlice in transit, Baby on board' etc. Whats that all about? Forgive me for being naive, but I don't think this appeals one bit to the finer humanitarian instincts of the testosterone driven, horn sprouting, cloven hoofed, red meat eating nazi herberts (and thats only the Women truckers) that drive 40 ton wagons at 60 mph, six inches off your back bumper on the M6 every Friday afternoon. I think a message like 'Show Tarantulas in transit', or 'Cockroach Roadshaw 2002' would be much more thought-provoking. At least you'd stand less chance of your car being 'done' when you park up in Moss Side or Salford., (or anywhere else in Manchester for that matter). And if any of you would like to advertise that you have a 'Learner Bhodran Player in Transit' ....... (Over-refreshed as usual, apologies in advance). Ian |

Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumper Stickers - Part FOUR From: Bill D Date: 06 Oct 05 - 12:38 PM you want a funny bumper sticker? I'll show you a funny bumpersticker! Well, maybe not so funny these days..... In the early 1970s, during the gas crisis, EPA decided to promote the national speed limit with clever bumperstickers They were put out on display at EPA headquarters in Wash DC, where I was working on a temporary assignment, and I manage to get 3 of them (and one other that said "The Faster You Go, the Richer They Get!") Someone with sense took one look and within 2 days, they were all withdrawn and, I suppose destroyed.....gee...maybe it's time I put one on my big van! |

Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumper Stickers - Part FOUR From: moongoddess Date: 10 Oct 05 - 06:40 PM This is a story about a bumper sticker that is right up there with all the other weird stories. In the early 70's, when Nixon was President and in that Watergate mess, I had a bumper sticker on my blue VW that said "Honk if you think he is guilty." My husband at the time worked for the EPA and he came home one night and told me his boss wanted me to remove that bumper sticker from my car. Good ol' oppositional me said no of course. A few days later my car was towed from our driveway. The reason given was that I was behind in my car payments - not true. When we went to get the car it was missing just one thing - that bumper sticker. |

Others I've seen: On the back of a Jeep: "Poor Man's Hummer" BU**SH** I heard the bumper sticker round on NPR once, years ago: Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty (repeat) If you cannot change your mind, are you sure you still have one? (repeat) If ignorance is bliss, why aren't more people happy? (repeat) Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty (repeat) This inspired the name of a now disbanded a capella group I was in during the early 90's: Senseless Acts of Harmony (we practiced random music). I had a passle of bumper stickers on my last van, but I got tired of the tailgators who just wanted to read them. My current truck has no stickers, and as a deterrent, I have a black spiked dogtoy on my trailer hitch ball. Ingrid |

Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumper Stickers - Part FOUR From: saulgoldie Date: 28 Apr 07 - 12:47 PM Not a bumper sticker, but...I saw this vanity plate back in the 80s in DC when I was a bicycle courier. It read: TIH2WA I puzzled on it for a few moments. When I rode, I always had a rearview mirror on my helmet. When the car passed, the joke became instantly clear. A local newspaper columnist wrote about it sometime later, raising a BIG ole hue and cry about the travelling obscenity that kids must be protected from (as opposed to the obscenity of WAR). People protested, and the message reached the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles), and they revoked the plate. Some people just have NO sense of humor! But wherever people laugh and share bumper stickers and vanity plates, it lives on. |

This was custom made for my wife's VW Rabbit in the 70s. We called it Bun. The bumpersticker said "I Carry the Hose." I said you had to know Pogo! But everyone who really matters does know Pogo upside down and backward, chapter and verse. When my daughter was 9 or so, she was reading one of the older books, and laughed. I asked, what was funny? She said, a frog jumped out of M'amzell Hebzibah's cake and the Rackety Coon chile shot it with a water pistol. I said, oh yeah, "Leetle Rocket Coon Chile, you have save ze Hepzibah's life!" One of the few times I really impressed my daughter. Small victories are important. Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumper Stickers - Part FOUR From: frogprince Date: 28 Aug 12 - 11:43 AM A sticker at the bottom edge of the side window of the car parked next to us at Tim Horton's: "Did you vote for Obama? Thanks a lot, Asshole". I'm still disappointed because I didn't have a piece of stiff paper; I printed "You're welcome" on a paper napkin, and tried to put it in the window slot by the sticker, but it just flopped over so he probably wouldn't have seen what it said. I so wanted to be able to move off a ways and watch for the guy to find it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumper Stickers - Part FOUR From: JohnInKansas Date: 29 Aug 12 - 01:39 AM Not exactly a bumper sticker, but painted on the back of a septic tank truck ... Like the ones that we call the "shit suckers" that clean out the port-a-pots at festival ...
(The XXXXX was a "painted over" spot, in just contrasting enough color for you to assume "something" had been "deleted.") John |
Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumper Stickers - Part FOUR From: JohnInKansas Date: 29 Aug 12 - 02:15 AM A question appeared early in this thread about how to post the letter PI. The "Capital Greek PI" has Unicode character value 03A0, so you would type Π to get Π The "Greek Small Letter Pi" has Unicode Character Value 03C0 so you would type <O; to get π In Word, in both Windows and Apple versions, autocorrect or autoreplace can be used to change a "code" that you type to something else, or you can use the "Insert|Symbol" utility; and either of these can be used to insert "symbols." Unfortunately the "symbols" inserted come from a "font page" that simply puts different "pictures" in the spots that correspond to "real characters" so what might print ok directly from Word will print as something different if the "symbol" is pasted into a different program/format like html, or may just print the code you typed. Professional layout/typography workers DO NOT EVER USE THE WORD SYMBOL INSERTION utility because in any case involving a change in format IT DOESN'T WORK RIGHT, as was demonstrated 'way back at the beginnings of this thread. Now - - - back to the much more interesting John |

Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumper Stickers - Part FOUR From: Senoufou Date: 19 Aug 16 - 03:38 AM In Ghana, particularly in Accra, where the cars zoom around dangerously, not to mention the little minibuses totally overloaded and the usual laden mopeds etc, one is in constant fear of being involved in an accident. It's the custom there to write huge signs on the back of vehicles expressing religious fervour. One sees for example JESUS IS LORD! and JESUS LOVES US! On a particularly bad day, on my way in a taxi to the British Embassy, lurching and swerving to avoid certain death, I was briefly amused to see a minibus go by with OH GOD HELP US! writ large on the back window. I could only mutter "Amen!" |
