Thanks John-don't like the OPORDO "loop" though. There are plenty of avenues left to explore, but none will give me a price for 2006! If people want to make their own bookings fine with me, but a large group has a good chance of reducing the price.

I don't mind, I only started nosing about with the idea, because we (Bill, Sam and I) were nattering late one night. Leave it 'till 2005 for all I mind.I like to be organised! A setting in which people can rely on some services or provide them themselves would be ideal. Camp Ramblewood (an example only), where The Getaway is held, allows you to stay in a dorm, camp on the grounds or stay in a nearby hotel. As to actual location, would it be reasonable to do a survey of those PLANNING to come, cut it off at a certain date, and look for the spot based on the criteria you have mentioned? Those seem to be central location, near an airport, airline fares, and weather at that time of year?

Perhaps a permathread for a few months?

Personally, I like to make music outside when I can and prefer spring or fall, that is, 60 degrees daytime to 80 degrees daytime but a good facility can overcome cold weather.

My unscientific observation has it that 'most' people signing on the mudcat are from the UK or the USA and Canada with notable exceptions. Do you agree?

Like Noreen, I wonder if 2006 isn't too far off. What about planning two: 2004 and 2006. One in the USA or Canada and the other in the UK?

Yes, Fortunato, you are right-about a survey, this thread is a sort of loose survey, but doesn't get many takers with opinions about the options open to us, and I do agree it is a long way off, as I said earlier some us, statistically speaking, might no longer be around for various reasons.

What do the Europeans think?( I include the UK) 2004 for a world gathering in the UK? We have a eurogathering, now into it's third year. 2001 Munster, 2002 Brussels, 2003 Gronnigen. 2004, the UK and a world gathering in the UK?

We have local gatherings (for local people) Yorkshire, and Llangstock,( It would be number three this year), Stoney Stratford to be annual? More ideas, suggestions anyone?

It's obvious, we can't all afford it, can't all get off at the same time, can't all get to the same place,can't, even with the best will in the world, make it due to many other different circumstances and some won't want to.

I'm deffinitely up for a world gathering, as 2006 is the ten year aniversary it would be nice to do it then. I don't mind America or Canada ( I could go scare some relatives there! ) as I've only left the UK twice in my life and four years gives me enough time to actually organise my first passport!!!!

Essentially, I'm up for anything someone has gone to the bother to organise. Lazy, but honest!

Sorry, I just got curious and looked at the thread.

I hadn't been here before. No one mentioned the Nova Scotia connection.

Several points

1 - Halifax has quite a number of student residences which ARE available at low prices.
2 - Canada 3000 IS out of business, but there are others available, WestJet and Can-Jet, which I'd have to see if they are charter companies, and where they fly to/from.
3 - I'm sure we could have hosting from within the Folk Community. I belong to both the Harbour Folk Society in Halifax and the Helen Creighton Folklore Societies. Also, not far from Halifax, within few hours drive are places with Folk Venues, plus in August we have the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival.
4 - In October/Fall, we would NOT be able to access the Student housing. BUT we have the Celtic Colours Festival up in Cape Breton. 9 days of fantastic music.

Wish he did, but Tom Lewis lives on the opposite coast, in British Columbia.

Another possibility would be the Gaelic College. In September most of the facilities are not being used. It's mainly used in the June through August time frame with another 2 weeks in October for Celtic Colours.

It would be similar to what was described above, since it is away from it all, near to nature in one of the most picturesque regions of Nova Scotia. It has dorms, and a strong musical base in that Cape Breton is such a source of traditional music. Englishtown's Leon Dubinsky is just up the road a few miles. He wrote the song Rise Again which Raylene Rankin made world reknown. Allister MacGillivray and Kenzie MacNeil, and many other familiar Cape Breton Songwriters have songs in the DT.
