Subject: UK: Barrow on Humber Eurogather April 30
From: Skipjack K8
Date: 21 Apr 04 - 08:56 AM

There, for those with serious concerns about Jacques Delors and his Europe, the Eurogathering is right here in little England, as we hold the Presidency this year.

To recap on the meanderings of the previous threads, yes it clashes with the Moron Cursed, Upton on Severn and doing things in the nuddy with Maypoles, always has and probably always will, but that is the date it happens.

The location is Barrow Upon Humber, in North Lincolnshire, which is very close to the Humber Bridge (it's the biggest bridge in Hull) and occasionally downwind of the curry ship in Hull9.

The TBC running order is:-

Friday 30th April - Mixed song and tune session in the Haven Inn, Barrow Haven, starting around 7pm and finishing pretty late.

Saturday 1st May - Possibly Cultural Tour of Hull in the morning and lunchtime (although this may happen on Sunday, as we are still trying to talk Les into coming out of retirement for one last job). If not, lunchtime and afternoon session in the Six Bells, Barrow upon Humber.

Saturday 8pm - 11.30pm Eurogathering concert in Barrow upon Humber Village Hall, featuring Cara, Punch the Horse, Colin & Karen Thompson, Hissyfits, Letty and house band of whoever the Viking can squeeze into the PA. Bill Sables is kindly compering the event, and hopefully a saleable CD will be produced to boost Mudcat funds. The customary raffle will be drawn then, so please bring as much valuable stuff as you can to increase the prize lots.

Sunday 2nd May - Lunchtime session in the Six Bells in Barrow, or the Cultural Tour. This will probably blend into the late afternoon, but there should be a break before the survivor's session on Sunday evening, again at the Six Bells.

Monday 3rd May - Public holiday in the UK. Disperse, or make prior arrangement for corpse collection.

Camping and caravanning is being marshalled by Doug Chadwick (Thanks Doug) in nearby Goxhill.

Accommodation is now fully booked locally. Floorspace at Skipjack Towers is fully booked (confirmed floor dwellers please bring sleeping bags and pyjamas).

Grub. There is an above average Chinese Takeaway in Barrow which may suit some, and next door is Colin's Bistro. Despite the comic name, it is excellent grub, but is a touch dear at what Oaklet would call 'All you can eat for £57'. Booking is advisable for Friday and Saturday nights there (PM me for number). Barton upon Humber, four miles hence, offers all the facilities of a market town, and has two fair to middling curry houses. There is also an 8 til 8 village shop, Costcutter, which may be of some use. There is one other pub in the village centre, the Royal Oak, for those seeking to avoid noisy singers and musicians. There is also a bus shelter, which is a big attraction for younger people, it seems.

A prayer chain might be a good idea for climate management, but then again, it is said that timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a raindance.

I should be available for the cultural tour on Saturday as Maggie has to work that day, which means we're not going to Whitby.

We will tour the Old Town of Hull, starting from the tourist office at the City Hall and following the route of the fish pavement (you'll see what I mean on the day). This route passes most places of interest in the Old Town, including Ferens Art Gallery and our excellent museums (which are free) and some nice pubs (which are not).

I think the best thing to do would be to allow people to choose between pubs and museums by waiting in particular pubs for the people who want to see museums (if any! )to catch up. So, for instance, you can visit Ferens Art Gallery and/or Hull Maritime Museum and catch up with the rest of us at the Minerva Pub.

If anybody has any special needs or requests please post them here.

Les
Pretender to the Throne of Hull

Please accept my apologies, but have booked a weeks holiday at Whitby with family. Can't see my children letting me get out of that.
Mind you we could all wave as we cross the humber bridge on our way to Whitby.
I hope it goes very well.

Re the skippie's meanderings on Barton, be advised allcomers that the two curry houses are stupendous - both are regularly booked out, and you WILL eat very well; also there are two respectable Chinese take-aways, one very good chippie and two pretty good ones, plus a kebab house whose large chicken kebabs with extra chilli and garlic sauce are enough to get Pavlov jealous. Course, I've only heard this from others, my diet is strictly vegan....
As one of the locals, I am very much looking forward to playing music with loads of new folk. As anyone who has visited this part of the world will know, the welcome is always warm here, I'm sure you will find much musical pleasure - not to mention other types - in this funny part of the world ( once affectionately - and erroneously- referred to by Greg as a 'pissant swamp'. Shame on you skippie, you know you can't bear to leave the place.
Can't wait for the bank holiday weekend!

Thank you for that Les. I tend to agree that if you tried to divert the little people short of the bridge, then you would probably end up being enjoyed with extra chilli and garlic sauce. Hope you have a braw time in Whitby, and we both enjoy a benign weather system.

Will anybody travelling between Hull and Barrow on the Saturday and/or Sunday care for any additional ballast, in the form of The Fragrant One and me and a ridiculous collection of so-called musical instruments?

I notice Kermie has been quiet of late, are you still coming?Tee shirts are proving to be problematical. We have no T shirt printer near us. I have been very busy, getting home well after shops close. I will try to get done this Saturday.

Cheers

Eric - I'm sure that we have T-shirt printers in Hull, there's one in Princes Quay though I've never used them. The tour gets here at 10.30am, perhaps somebody could drop them in and pick them up after the tour? I'll have a word with them if you want.

I have to find my tickets. I know they are somewhere in that heap of paper on my desk...

This is the very last call for T shirts. If I am able to get them done I need to know by today at latest please. Those who have given me their size will be OK except the XXXL and above, as they would be a special order from the manufacturer. SO the largest I can get is XXL.

It is bloody late.....I've been asking for weeks!!!!!! But as it's you and only you Bassic and I know you are a goodly and kind heated chap, then you might be lucky, but you'll be the last. So it's 14 exclusivly designed from the hand of yours truly. Sorry that's all folks. Everyone else can stare with envy.I haven't mixed up sizes, you should get the requested size, though the odd person might have to compromise as Mrs V is making her third visit to the shop to purchase.

see you all next week.

Cheers

Each new T shirt ordered costs many multiples of £57.00.They cannot be exchanged for whelks, or even the finest foolish virgin olive oil.So Oaklet my lovely even if you scratch my back with that bristle brush you have for personal hygiene, ye won't get anymore.

Skipjack is the only person who does not get the size he ordered, he ordered a lard sized one. The shop doesn't sell them. Each garment is going to be fitted personally by Skipjack (perks of being boss, but I am allowed to watch)

Please do not wash these after the event as the ink from Freja's markers is not waterproof! It's a good job she got that "John Bull printing set" for Christmas. Together with her "Art attack" CD, we've made a fine job.

Sorry Bassic is not heated except by those mysterious canisters Linda is talking about, of which I know nothing. I did mean hearted. Based on the experience that he once said "Hello, I know you, now F off" to me in the music room after shoving me out of the way and into a rack of Bodhrans in the race to get to the counter.

Hil, shame you won't be with us, except in spirits(I know you get plenty of those)however, upton on the moor and coast by Hastings will take place next year, but the gathering will not-well in UK anyway.

Whereas we wait with baited breath for the pronouncement by the new pope where next years Eurogathering will be. But it will be on the same date.(Friday April 29th-Monday 2nd May) and will not be moved.

Roll on Friday!!!!!!!

Doug Chadwick has PMed me to say that Linda & myself in the caravan plus Susanne in the tent that we're lending her will be the only ones on the camping field - and also that there won't be any water supply.
I have checked and although the nearest Caravan CL Site (Barrow Haven) is fully booked, there is room on the Goxhill Road site, which now has electrical hookups as well as two loos - it's quite cheap too.
We are therefore considering going there instead.

The only problem would then be Susanne. Has anyone in Barrow got somewhere that she could pitch the tent ? - it's only a small Eurohike one about 2m x 2m. Skippy - could she use the bit of land that you said we could put the caravan on ? It might be more convenient for her as well as she wouldn't be dependent on us for lifts to and fro.

The tour, after its transfer from the South Bank (that's another bank for you jOhn) will be on foot, although with special permission you may be allowed to use both feet.

You will see:
how Hull started the English Civil War (possibly one of the civilest wars in history - after you, mate, no after you!);
the largest church in England (depending on how you measure them);
the daftest street name in the world; and
the smallest window in the known universe (also possibly smaller than some in the unknown universe).

You will also visit sume pubs and drink sume bear9hoi. Actually you can choose between pubs and museums/art gallery. The trick is that the drinkers go to pubs and wait for the culture vultures to catch up.

Hull's Art Gallery and Museums are first class and free - with the exception of the big deep sea fish tank, which you haven't got time for anyway, unless you went there instead. You possibly haven't got enough time for the Arctic Corsair (preserved trawler, unless you head there straight away).

Any road up, for anybody who's arriving independently, meet outside Hull Tourism Office (at the City Hall) at 10.30am. Here's some stuff to be reading in the meantime.

T shirt news. Mrs V, having made the trip today was told that we need the image in a vector file format, made on Corel draw. I managed to get hold of Corel draw 12, but the T shirt bloke said he uses Corel 8

So my question to clever clogs out there;

How do I quickly transfer a JPG into a vector format? Or can I put an MS publisher file into a vector format? Or do I have to re design it all again in Corel Draw. You have 1 hour to come up with the answers if you can. If not i'll try myself.

I have Corel Draw 8 here and I just tested: it does not open jpg files so I can't simply convert it to a vector format by loading it into Corel and saving as a vector format...

Looks like you have to go the hard way - re-design in Corel...

More testing revealed the following:

Start Corel, File - New
Rightclick in the "Page", choose "Import".
Select JPEG in the list of file types, then select your jpg file.
Some sort of tool appears at the mouse cursor, position it where you want to place the top left corner of image, click.
Now scroll so you can see the bottom right corner of imported image.
Grab the small square with mouse pointer and drag till the image has the wanted size (relative to "page").
Save the image as .cdr

CorelDraw used to have a "Trace" option to transfer bitmapped files to a vector format - it's one of those processes (like trying to get a MIDI file from a WAV) which is much easier the other way round.

Bitmaps are great for storing photographs ect, but suffer from the fact that as you enlarge them, you loose the fine detail and they get "blocky". Vector graphics consist of the instructions for actually drawing the artwork and describe things like the angles, width, colour, and curves of lines, the fill of enclosed areas (even allowing for graduations of colour etc. They are great for drawn graphic artwork, because they contain all the neccessary details and therefore should remain sharp at most magnifications.

I do have an .EMF file (enhanced windows metafile) of the mudcat logo, but because it's not very well optimised, it's just over 2 meg. I could E-mail it if you want. I'ts large enough for Tee-Shirts.

Incidently, it shouldn't matter if you do have a later version of CorelDraw than the Tee-Shirt guy - just save it in one of the standard vector graphics formats that CorelDraw will export/import.

Well, the T shirts are a go'er. The design has been re-designed using wire frames, nodes and all the correct things for them to be done and on time. I've worked with a print design artist to turn my design into reality, the guy who owns the firm has been really great. I sat down with him this evening for a couple of hours at the factory. The cost £57.00 each plus a bucket of oil cooled whelks for Mrs V. (Real price not known yet!!) So everyone bring lots of dosh, well those who ordered one.I hope you like them and think they are worth the money you are going to pay!!!!!!!!!

Andy, you better care whether whelks work on Bank holidays or else you'll not get on your flying machine. Whelks are often sub-contracted as baggage handlers!

Are they "made with real Girl Scouts"... or is Whelk Scouts the secret ingrediment what makes 'em taste so scrumpshuous? Well, you'll just have to be the highest bidder if you wants to know for sure....

What do we do when we get there - ie is there somewhere to go, before the Haven Inn shindig at 7pm ?   Is there anyone we could contact to say we've arrived.

Linda and I expect to get there sometime Friday afternoon with both Susanne and Wolfgang. I believe that Wolfgang has already arranged his lodgings, and Sussane is supposed to be piching her tent at Skipjack's (unless someone is going to offer her a floor to crash down on - she will have sleeping bag and airbed) - so where will be the best place to drop our passengers, before we drive onwards to the caravan site in the Goxhill direction ?

If I end up with some time on my hands before 7pm, I could make up some (standard Mudcat) badges if anyone needs one - PM me quickly if you do - I'm unlikely to log into the net after mid-day tomorrow (Thursday).

Only joking.

Leeds Bradford is small, there is little chance that we will miss each other unless you go somewhere you should'nt. When you come out of the arrivals (no customs on internal flights) go to the main exit. If I'm early, I'll find you there, If I'm late I'll find you there.I should be there for 22.00 without a problem. Hope your flight is on time.

Cheers, CU in 22.5 hrs.

What a fantastic weekend. Made new friends, met old friends and played good music. I just wish that I could remember the words to all the songs that were rattling round in my head when I went to sleep last night.

One or two surreal moments:
– driving round Hull - in what was supposed to be a convoy, having lost the people in front and the people behind - in search of jOh9n's curry shop that we didn't know the name of, only to find it closed.
The other was, having read so much about whelks in the thread, Oaklet arrived with a tray full which he handed round to one and all. First time I had tasted whelks – not bad, but I prefer cockles.

Many thanks to Skipjack for organising the event and Eric the Viking for assisting him, and to Les from Hull for a superb cultural tour.

I won't steal Skipjack's thunder by revealing where next year's Eurogathering is going to be, but I told the wife and she said I can go. Yippee!

It was a phantastic weekend, full of music, talking, drinking, eating. Only that Susanne and I missed the music when we had to spend the night at Stanstad Airport (Fucking British Railway system).

Thanks to the local organising committee and especially to Greg.

Two very moving moments on the evenings for me: The song for Julie B. on Friday and the only time we ever had prerecorded music on that weekend, when on Saturday night, Rick's voice filled the hall singing 'all I can leave you is a handful of songs'. I was glad nobody could see my eyes from close then.

But let's not end without a critical note: Many hours we walked through Hull (thank you, Les), we saw lots of different fish and lots of different pubs (with fine beers), but we didn't see the bears and we didn't see John. My pet theory that the Mudcat character 'John' is an invention of the Hull Mudcatters still stands, though usually trustworthy persons like Joe O. and Susanne(skw) claim to have seen him in person. And you must admit that to show us a closed Take Away boasting 'International Food' as 'John's' curry sh-p only could fool the easily misled. On the other hand, a pub named Durty Nellie's made me think whether a part of the legend has a factual base....

Wolfgang, my friend, I am so sorry that you both had to endure a night in Stansted. I know of what you speak, and my stay there with Bill and Eric (on our way to Mooman's Brussels Eurgather) was scheduled, and still unutterably awful. Your beration of the railway system here is rather mild. I like your theory on jOhn. We met someone answering his description, but perhaps he doesn't exist in his own head?

Thank you for all the kind comments, everyone. I was just glad to have kept the standard up, as set by Wolfgang, Mooman and Letty, and enviably high at that. I would like to make a few ramblings, firstly about what I can't remember. Apparently sometime in the dark hours on Saturday morning, I led an expeditionary tour down into the cellar here to find the long lost tunnel to Thornton Priory, four miles hence. Did we find it? Apparently, Eric came armed and composed a blues called 'Get Me Out of Here', which was performed to the delight of the adjoining three streets.

Of that that I can remember, the quality of the performances (apart from my own!!) at the Saturday night concert was absolutely stonking. Cara topped and tailed the evening with superb execution and were rightly lauded with great praise from all present, even the curious who wandered in off the street. Concert organisers take note, as that idea of starting and finishing with the star act (which came in a fleeting cohesive moment when writing the set list two minutes before the start) set the tone for the entire evening, and there was magic there. The few names my addled mind can remember are Linda and Hazel, whose harmonies enthralled everyone present (and Mooman, who is good at counting, said we topped out at 46, although it felt like 57) and Colin and Karen, who closed the first half to rapturous applause. Bill Sables did his customarily excellent job of compering the evening (Bill calls for our ceilidh band, and he really a consumate showman)and other massive thanks go to dear Susanne (skw) for anchoring all things raffle, and Wilfried, who savaged all entrants for the door cost, although he did stop short of adopting my idea of charging perfomers extra! And everyone else who set the hall out and put it away again. I crawled back into the hall before 9am to collect the PA, to find it completely as it was found, apart from a wonderfully pungent aroma of recently enjoyed beer!

On the subject of raffle, and door costs, the good news is that we raised the sum of £115.55 for 'Friends of Mudcat', and when I can get my arse in gear, a cheque favouring that name and amount will be winged to Bill Sables.

Yorkshire Yankee Vikki was a stalwart performer, and closed Friday's wonderful session at the Haven with 'Rolling Home', and did such a great job that we made her close the weekend with it too. Noreen, also, must be mentioned for her superb vocal contributions.

The Mexican Village Hall had such wonderful acoustics and a rapt audience, that the PA we lugged down there was only needed to lift the odd voice, but the downside is that because so little data was going through the desk, a CD is unlikely to be possible (and special thanks go to the Viking for doing such an uncharacteristically sensitive job of mixing all night). However, the divine Kate has much of it captured on professional BBC video recording kit that all is not lost, and she promises to splice a tape together, which will hopefully further boost the £115.55, so good on you, Kate.

Other thanks go to Jo, our landlady at the Six Bells, who not only laid on two massive spreads for the eleven hour survivors' session on the Sunday, but actively encouraged our guests to consume the Chinese Takeaway carryouts on her premises. Everyone really appreciated that, Jo, so thanks again!

Whoever I have missed in errata, I apologise, but my sincerest possible thanks go to everyone for coming and creating the group dynamic that I enjoyed more than anyone, and I will single out Ken and Elizabeth for coming all the way from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Ken individually for being a musical bedrock under every session tune and song with some of the best mandolin I've heard. Also our mate Les, who did a marvellous job of instructing an uncontrollable crocodile of 20 culture vultures on the tour of Hull9. Sorry you couldn't make it over for the Sunday session, Les, but I know there were transport difficulties.

The highest point of a pretty high weekend for me was, however, hearing my favourite song of all time, Exile's Son, performed by its author.

Hello survivors - just back in Bristol after a lovely comfortable (really!) train journey home. Thanks a MILLION Greg - you did brilliant, even if we didn't find the tunnel in the cellar.

There must be something in the water up there - I've heard some of the finest musicians that England (and surrounding global environs) has to offer.

Oaklette - I was delighted to meet you in 3D, but be careful next time round, as me and Letty will lock you in a cupboard and make you teach us stuff. I liked your whelks. That's not a euphemism.

mooman - thank you for scundering me, as they say in Norn Iron. You just wait til you go through the education system one more time!

I went to bed last night with all these tunes floating round my head (actually, I went to bed last night with mooman, but Skip made me do it). Anyway, I woke up this morning and the only tune remaining was the wonderful "pegleg" song!

See you all again soon, I hope. And we're now taking applications for the Mudcat Freakshow (currently consisting of Greg's human thermometer, Sarah's waggling middle finger and my double-jointed hips).

The six bells landlady was so friendly, at our pre-'concert' drinks I can only imagine she loved your company on Sunday. (I had to ride pillion to Huddersfield!) I'd much rather have been singing and listening to those voices I didn't get to hear on Saturday. Maybe next time.
Well done Skipjack, Erik, Bill and co. By the way 'Where is it all happening next year?'
Hope Kate does a good job splicing the tape! It appeared to be an evening/weekend she thoroughly enjoyed!
Cara, Wonderful, Karen and Colin, Likewise, the 'Song from Rick', so moving and the 'unbroken circle' was the culmination of a grand evening. Thank you. Hope to see you again soon. Hazel.

So,"uncharacteristically sensitive" eh, that's not what you said on Friday night when you were pretending to be pillow biting and muttering Richard, Richard!!(Did you write that to make sure I read your every word?) You know how sensitive I am to your cruelty.

Well, what great fun.Great to see everyone. Thankyou for making the weekend a huge success. Yes, to echo Skips words. Cara, such beautiful tunes and songs, such enviable talent.

There are many things to say about the weekend. So great to meet friends old and new. Such a pleasure to have some stay with my family, even if for such a short while.Letty, my mail order bride (backup) Aragon flicks licks and drools to you.

I should like to welcome "Shrek", a developing talent,a real artist of quality, great fun, wonderfully funny and the only one to make my nipples go hard all weekend! We'll see you soon for a session. Kermie, hope the vid works out well.Dr Devil, what can I say? If you've ever seen a London bus (Red) that is the colour Fibs went as she was presented with her diploma from Mooman. As kermie, Letty and I were so engrossed in conversation on the way home, I missed two different turnings. We had to go through Armley prison to drop Kermie off.

It was just such huge fun. It is often repeated, but Wolfgang, you started it all off, again thankyou and a pleasure to see you. I haven't time to say all the things I need to say at the moment, so I'll post later-back to domestic life. Mrs V and Freja had me drive them to the seaside today, and only just got back. No rest for the wicked!

And last, but definitely not least:

Thanks to Richard for volunteering to organize next year's EuroGathering.

*) thanks to Mudcrash by now I have listened to Linda's CD as well, after listening to Cara.
Both CDs are wonderful!
As the song has been mentioned by KJ here in this thread, here are the words:

Cycling is fun

Chorus:
So [[[Not on first and last time]]]
Cycling is fun, Cycling is fun!

There is the rain a-dropping
It pours with no hope that it is stopping
All my clothes are soaked wet
May it be from the rain or from the sweat

Chorus

There is the road ascending
With a gradient that's outstanding
To the valleys it does not stick
It has to run over every peak

Chorus

There is the wind a-blowing
That always keeps my bike a-slowing
It's coming from the front at me
But that's where it is expected to be

Chorus

There is the car a-passing
Between me and it there fits nothing
Why are they passing me So near
Do they think a cyclist's life is not dear

Chorus

There is the thirst a-drying
It feels as if I were a-frying
With all the sweat I leave behind
I need to drink water pint after pint

Chorus

There is the muscle aching
It hurts like there were bones a-breaking
Kicking the pedals gives me pain
While I am pedal ling almost in vain

Chorus

There is the sun a-blazing
Creating heat that is amazing
Every sunblocker must fail
I'm turning re-ed like the royal mail

Chorus

So because of all
the rain adropping
the road ascending
the wind ablowing
the car apassing
the thirst adrying
the muscle aching
the sun ablazing

Chorus

(words by a German cyclist with the name Andreas Waechter, tune: none/several/whatever...)

Got home 30 hours ago, at 4.30pm after saying (a reluctant) goodbye to you all, boarding a train to Stansted, changing at Doncaster, waiting 2 hours to get into the next station, Retford, because of a faulty overhead wire, being taken to Grantham by bus, boarding another train to Stansted, changing into a taxi at Stevenage (courtesy of British Rail's highly efficient successors), reaching Stansted at 9.30 only to be told that the security check closed five minutes ago and we could either travel without our luggage (to be left in left luggage at 4 pounds a day till collected) or fly to Duesseldorf in the morning, spending the night at Stansted, catching a few hours' sleep stretched out on my luggage and a couple of chairs, reaching the intercity from Duesseldorf to Muenster with minutes to spare, saying goodbye to Wolfgang at last, boarding the bus out to the airport, collecting my car and getting home a good twelve hours late. Have since caught up on sleep and survived a hiding from my boss because the email I sent from Stansted went astray so she didn't know where I'd got to. However, I enjoyed every minute of that weekend, and I'd like to second any thanks that have been said above, and add mine to Greg's family, Jane in particular, for not only giving up their home and beds to a bunch of mad Mudhatters, but also supplying them with lovely breakfasts every morning (thanks also to masterchef Eric at this point) and endless mugs of tea and coffee. Hull 2004 was definitely a highlight of the Mudcat year! Someone ought to keep track of the new Mudcatters we meet at each new gathering. (Andy???)

Sorry to be so late posting, but what with Mudcat being down most of yesterday and the fact that Linda and I had to pick up Sorcha in the evening, this is the first chance I've had.

A big thank you to Greg (and Jane - I hope your marriage survives this) and all the other people who made the weekend so much fun. It was great to be able to put faces to many new mudcatters, as well as meeting many old friends. I'm sure Linda will also make a posting, but we both had a wonderful time.

Thank you, everyone!
Greg and Eric: well-done, you can do it again some time.
Les: thanks for the tour, I was told that Hull was a dreadful place, how unfair!
Assorted weather gods: more of this weather please, to be delivered in Cork.
Everyone else: for being great company and wonderful musicians.
This was just what I needed to cheer me up after a rather difficult period!

skundered/scundered, a word which I never would have understood but for Mudcat.

It reminds me of one of the most hilarious Mudcat moments when way back in '97 a young female poster meant to say she was 'newbie' and actually did post she was 'nubile'. When the other posters laughed she said she was skundered and had to explain the word to us.

The Eurogathering lost and found office....

Found - One violin practice mute. Chromed three-pronged affair with barrel top left in the Six Bells on Sunday. Apply Oaklet.

Lost - D whistle with red end and brown tube left on the top of the mantlepiece in the Six Bells after the Sunday session. Contact Stuart who apparently will shortly join as "Thumper".

A great weekend. Thanks everyone.

Some afterthoughts and experiences:

There is so much said and thanked that I can't add anything new - or?
A praise to the Viking who started to prepare the breakfast until he could commandeer female help which ended sometimes in his mere supervising the Kates (in his own words: Kate who is Kate and Kate who is Fibs). So thanks to them, too.

Isn't it marvellous that there were so many young and gifted people? So we can be sure folk won't fade away in the next future.

Some seemingly typical English inconsistencies:
- In BuH the place near the Six bells is called Crosshill. It is the lowest place of the village and displaying no cross. The Red House is painted entirely white with not the smallest speck of red at all.
- On the road the pub signs often do not match the names: The George shows a beautiful lady, and the Eagle guess what? A red lion.
- And now something baffling: In Hull there is a Church Side South which is not repeat NOT to the north of St. Mary's but where you'ld never expect it: it is really to the south!
- Labour Day is not a public holiday: On monday morning (Labour Day) Greg brought us to the bus station in Barton. Richard and I were more than disturbed: the timetable showed working days, sundays and public holidays, when the bus Greg was told by the enterprise shouldn't go according to the time table. But it arrived punctually at the time shown for sundays. Is there a shifting of holy days going on?

In Hull I wanted to visit some museums I missed to visit on Saturday. At the station there are no luggage lockers, and in the tourist information they couldn't help me either. But in the Maritime Museum I met a friendly warden who let me put my backpack into a private room during my stay in the town. After my stay we talked a little about my whereabouts, and he revealed himself as a parttime musician. He asked me whether I knew Wiesbaden and Mainz, where he had stayed some years ago doing a lot of gigs. So I told him that Wiesbaden is our state capital, and that I studied in Mainz for three years. Lots of funny memories.

In Utrecht I strolled through the Old Town full of churches, museums, restaurants, modern pubs, and curio shops - all for milking tourists. For the evening train I wanted to buy some bread, cheese, and canned beer but nearly despaired looking for a food shop. When I passed the public library I entered, revealed myself as fellow librarian from abroad, and asked the ladies to help me. They were able to show me the way to a shop, and I commented: "As usual; professors don't know everything, but librarians do - or find it out soon." Lots of laughter and giggling. It was nice experience for me.

And now some advice for the next gathering: If it's too difficult to learn french try to get accustomed to Franglais or Frenglish. Unfortunately the late Punch with its jolly column doest exist any more, but maybe you can lay hands on an old copy of Parlez Vous Franglais? (Let's Parlez Franglais) by Miles Kington (out of print). And work up your pronunciation. When the title of the famous book Rimbaud en Afrique stops to sound like Rambo in a frig and pas de surprise like the queerly contorted name Paddy Sir Breeze you are on the right way. And remember: the fine Burgundy wine Hautes Côtes de Beaune should never sound like Hot Coats of Bone.

Á la bonneheure
Wilfried

Wilfried,
Next time you're in Utrecht, once you enter the horrible place that is Hoog Catharijnen (the indoor shopping centre which also houses the station), follow the signs for Albert Heijn! Or get ready-made sandwiches in VenD.

I love Utrecht city centre with its canals, the old Dom (cathedral), and the area around the convent. It's Amsterdam without the tourists (don't get me wrong, I don't mind tourists, but hate crowds).

Anyway, would I be right to assume that for the next EuroGathering, I'd have to fly to Paris?

Letty - terrible to read about your towering mountains of tissues. What wonders me is that I lost the cold I had fetched some days before in Germany in BuH and 'ull.
I've hastened through Hoog Catharijnen (same feelings about that like your's); coming back with a heavy bag and having learned what the sign "ah" means I saw that I could have bought my stuff there, too.
In Utrecht I looked through the museums after an old altar of my home church which is said to be now in Utrecht - found none. Maybe it is the Middle Rhineish one in the Catharijneconvent (permanent exhibition closed until 2006, but some good pictures in the web). I have to look it up now from the other end.
Thanks for your good advice; I should have asked you in BuH for a good chain of stores and I should have spared me a lot of searching. But I won't ever forget the funny scene in the library.
Can you give me the tune of the adjective song?
I assume you have to fly to Paris next time, if you don't prefer to swim to La Rochelle. I have proposed to some train travellers to meet at a certain time in Paris, take the same train (and do a little busking during the ride?)

Essex Girl - since you sang so nice we'll abstain to knot up the tunnel. Give my regards to the other fisherman, if it isn't too late - Six Bells!

Cheers
Wilfried

Wilfried - South Church Side runs along the south side of Holy Trinity Church, just as North Church Side runs along the north side. We can be logical sometimes.

Monday was a public holiday (what we call a Bank Holiday) and public transport tends to follow the Sunday times on such days.

Public transport has no lockers or left luggage as the IRA blew a few up many years ago. They've used this excuse since to avoid putting them back. I'm glad you found our museum staff helpful and our museums interesting.

Meant to post long before this, but better late that never (and better never than early! as a friend of mine says)...

First order of business: I echo the thanks that have already (most deservedly) been showered upon Skipjack K8 (and Jane, his cheerfully long-suffering spouse) and EtV; they were the most graciously accommodating and conscientious hosts one could wish for. Also Les from Hull for the interesting & informative tour -- I was so impressed with Hull I went back & told my other half how nice it is; I think we'll be coming back for a(nother) visit one of these days... And the amazingly generous hospitality of Jo, landlady of the Six Bells, was surpassed only by that of Skipjack & EtV.

As a fairly new Mudcatter (since October-ish) I especially enjoyed getting to meet -- and hear -- the people that go with the names I've been reading. And to pick up some Mudcat-lore, such as "Make mine a bear!", "curry ship", and learning to pronounce "Oaklet" correctly (i.e "OakLEE").

Like Wolfgang, a high point for me was during the Sat eve concert, when Bill Sables played Rick Fielding singing Jerry Rasmussens' "Handful of Songs" (a particularly moving and appropriate choice of song as well). What a warm, rich voice -- and then there's his guitar playing! Even tho I haven't been on Mudcat all that long, I had heardread SO much about Rick; hearing him helped me appreciate -- at least in part -- why he was so special to everyone. Thank you, Bill.

Letty, you have my sympathies about the "tissue mountain" (Saturday was like that for me). What amazed me was that even with a sore throat, your voice was *gorgeous*! No-one would have guessed you had one (a sore throat, I mean... not a voice!). Also really enjoyed hearing KJ & CT... *brilliant* singing and playing! Noreen also was in *very* fine form indeed.

Fibs (great to get to talk with you for a bit on the train to Sheffield), as "scundered" had me totally curiosified, I Googled to see if I could find out what it means; the closest I could find was in the "Hiberno-English Archive":
scunner, // n. v. a feeling of disgust or loathing; to disgust
< origin obscure, but cf. ME scunneren, to loathe, avoid. 'She took a scunner to me as soon as ever she set eyes on me'.

(The most intriguing Google results included the following entry:
pamela stephenson nude - pamela stephenson naked - pamela ... Pamela Stephenson - pamela stephenson nude, Pamela Stephenson naked, Pamela Stephenson nude, Pamela Stephenson pic, Pamela Stephenson images, or Pamela ... and similar entries for "anna friel pics", "nude girl pics - hot nude girls - college girl nudes", "melinda armstrong pictures", and "sharon taggart nude"...   Go figure!)

But none of those really seemed to be*quite* the way *you* were using it...
I was about to give up & ask what the heck scundered means when (thanks to Wolfgang's post on the subject) I decided to do a Mudcat search for the thread he mentioned, and found (just in case anyone else was wondering) this: "I'M SKUNDERED. (Belfast for taking a reddener)"

Finally... I promised Oaklet I'd post the song I sang at the Six Bells session Sun afternoon, since it mentions his name (and he was fortunate/clever enough not to have been there to hear it):

To the tune of "On Ilkla Moor Bah T'at...

Where hast tha been sin I saw thee? (Sin I saw thee)
With Oaklet and Mudcat
Where hast tha been sin I saw thee? (Sin I saw thee)
Where hast tha been sin I saw thee? (Sin I saw thee)
With Oaklet and Mudcat
With Oaklet and Mudcat
With Oaklet and Mudcat

Barrow on Humber really swings (It really swings!)
With Oaklet and Mudcat...

Visit Hull's famous "curry ship" ("curry ship"!)
With Oaklet and Mudcat...

Tha'll die of eating curried whelks (curried whelks!)
With Oaklet and Mudcat...

Then whelks will come & et thee up (they'll et thee up!)
With Oaklet and Mudcat...

All only 57 quid!
With Oaklet and Mudcat...

Three cheers for Greg and Eric too! (& Eric too!)
With Oaklet and Mudcat...

====================================

Well, that's more than enough from me for now...

Cheers,

YY

The unknowns are known to me. The truly gorgeous and gifted box player Kit is indeed Bloke's daughter, and she promises to make a return to our circuit when she's bottomed her degree.

The bespectacled youth is Stuart, or Thumper as he is known in these parts (apparently it's his bare knuckle soubriquet), and next to him is his fair of face father, Don, occasionally seen here as Ploughboy.

The bloke playing the banjo lives in Barrow, but I don't know his name. Perhaps Oaklet does?

Still no new pictures...
What happened to them? There were quite a few trigger-happy people there...

And no BBC-video...

Has Sara registered?

Go to jail, don't go over start, don't receive any whelks worth $ 57!!!

Just to keep the thread running until the next desired post comes up about new pictures.

Re: Whelks in literature

They can be found in Adams, Douglas: Life, the Universe, and Everything. - Chapter 16.

Here we find a sharp discussion of what a chance a whelk has in a supernova? (none), why just a whelk? (why not), and a paragraph about the obsession with whelks.

Very funny, indeed.

Enjoy!
Wilfried

Wilfried, I fell on your link as you would expect a whelk obsessive would, but the link didnae work. It's a case of whelkus interuptus!

If Douglas Adams is involved, I request a change of price for a whelk from £57 to £42 ;-)

Dave - what a pity! But photographers seem to share the same fate as the daylight in Greenland: seldom seen.
You should send in a small collection of your pictures, where MudGuard can be seen, considering the fine pictures he took from you. You owe him this, I think.
Linda - nag him till he does it!

Cheerio
Wilfried

I've got a few pictures which we've downloaded,(including one of Mudguard) but I'll have to ask Dave to post then as I haven't quite got the hang of it yet. (NO RUDE REMARKS !!!!!)

Hi folks,

finally I found it again, on a crumpled sheet, in a corner of my satchel:

A Rather Silly Lullaby

Flow gently, sweet Humber
deprived of any elks,
sing me into slumber
with the help of your whelks.

I don't care for their number,
fifty seven or nine;
sing me into slumber,
with me it is fine.

Be proud, mighty Humber,
to be not so narrow
and lick all the outskirts
of the village of Barrow.

So flow on, sweet Humber,
and flap to the shore,
sing me into slumber
with a Mudcat folklore.

(the snoring contest MudGuard vs. Wilfried ended even; Saturday Wilfried 1 point, Sunday MudGuard 1 point)

Well, Oaklet... I'm feeling quite neglected now! You complimented Wilfried on his song, but you didn't mention *my* song -- even though it mentions *you* all over the place! Humph! I'm pouting now... ;-p

Oaklet, my dear driver of veteran treasures - thanks a lot for your appraisal.
YorkshireYankee - I'd be the first to utter my praise of your song in writing (I did it verbally after hearing it, I'm sure), but I didn't find it in this thread. Please publish it here or give me a link.

Cheerio
Wilfried

Good though it was, Wilfried's poem cannot even hope to gain permission within this current millennium to qualify to sniff the bottom of YY's seminal opus with me in it.

There.

Right - this is from memory and should be sung (as I do) to the tune of "On Ilkla Moor Bah T'at...

I hope I have remembered it ok...

Grand stuff

What I didn't say was YY's song will shortly be offered to Buena Vista studios as a spec feature-film potentially starring Daniel Day Lewis, Sting and Linda Lusardi. All the artist's respective agents have demanded a (returnable) fee for the option. They wouldn't do this if the artists thought the idea was pants. Me old mate Linda is up for my part. This is a bit ironic, as I am usually up when I think of most of hers.

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears! I've come not to bury but to praise. A really lovely song, YY, and it merits to be produced as a spec film. May I ask for a small part in it?

Vicky, sorry to be so quiet on the subject, but I thought the song great even when you first sang it. It added (if possible at all) greatly to the hilarity of the Hull Eurogathering, and deservedly featured Oaklet as among the foremost Hull Mudcat whelks. However - as us Scots would say - Wilfried's poem was no bad at a either! (And one of these days I'll get round to posting those two songs I dared to sing at the gathering to be added, for anyone who's interested, to the Low German section of the DT.)

Goodness, I wasn't expecting a response from so many quarters! (I'm blushing now!) Oaklet, all is forgiven... I was *most* impressed and gratified by your total and flawless recall of all the words ;-), and your comment about Buena Vista Sudios made me laugh out loud! (my husband always has to come find out what I'm reading when that happens.)

Now, down to brass tacks: the offer from Buena Vista *sounds* good, but I'm a bit wary -- have they said who they have in mind to play the whelks? After all, that's really the *most* important part(s)...

Wilfried, how would you feel about playing a whelk? (Remember, there are no "small parts", only small actors.)

Susanne, thanks for your kind words as well, and you're right about Wilfried's poem/lullabye -- a sterling effort! (If I could produce something *half* as good in German, I would be absolutely delighted!)

Cheers,

YY
