Buses

Translink, the main (or rather, the only) transport company in N.I. runs Ulsterbus, the N.I. bus company.
Ulsterbus timetables
Belfast has 2 main bus stations: Europa (Glengall Street) and Laganside (Donegall Quay). To the best of my knowledge, Laganside is still the one that serves Portaferry.

There aren't any trains. N.I. has about 2 train tracks. Neither go anywhere near the Ards Peninsula.

The best bus route is probably the Belfast - Netwownards - Portaferry bus route, the one which goes via Kircubbin (NOT the one via Portavogie as that takes you right over to the other side of the peninsula).

As I posted in the other thread:

There's a good bus service from Belfast International to Belfast itself. Belfast City airport is only 10 minutes from the city centre.

The bus service to Portaferry is less good. Much less good. But there are buses, and that's the main thing. It takes about an hour or more to go the 30 miles from Belfast by the direct route. I think it's probably 1hr15 mins, and more than likely 1hr30mins given the state of the roads once past Kircubbin (local village where tarmac seems to stop).
The indirect route (serves the other side of the peninsula) takes a good bit longer.
As far as I know, these buses leave Belfast from Laganside bus station on Donegall Quay (NOT Europa bus station on Glengall Street).

From Dublin, it's probably easier to get to Belfast first, and then go to Portaferry, although it's theoretically possible to go Dublin --> Newry --> Newcastle (where the Mountains of Mourne Sweep Down to the Sea) --> Downpatrick --> Strangford --> ferry boat (takes 10 mins) to Portaferry. The hardest part there is probably the very poor Downpatrick to Strangford bus service.

Price is probably around 4 quid for a single ticket from Belfast - Portaferry.

Additional bus posting
Belfast has two main bus stations: Europa (Glengall Street) and Laganside (Donegall Quay).
You get the airport bus from just outside Arrivals at the airport. It takes maybe 30 - 45 minutes to get to Belfast. It will probably go to Europa but you need to catch the bus to Portaferry from Laganside. (NOTE - Fionn says that the airport bus does go to Laganside bus station.) There may be a linking bus between the two bus stations, but it's not that far - it can be walked. When getting the Portaferry bus at Laganside, try to get the more direct one - the one that goes via Kircubbin, rather than the long, windy, tedious one that goes via Portavogie or Ballywalter. Also, ask if you need to change at Newtownards (or in "Ards", as the town is also known). I think there should be direct buses via Kircubbin, but Newtownards is the biggest town along the way, and there's a bus station there that the bus might stop in for a while.

In Portaferry, the bus will drive into the town and will come to The Square - identifiable from the shape and the big Market House and a bus shelter. From there, walk behind the Market House and take the road that goes off to the right, downhill towards the sea and the castle (it will be signposted either "Castle Street" or "The Shambles"). Follow it down to the seafront and turn right. Barholm is on the right just past the lifeboat boathouse.

Driving

For those thinking of hiring a car and driving to Portaferry, here's some directions from the AA.
(Note - where it says "Kircubbin. 7.2 miles at roundabout take first exit" that refers to the roundabout as you reach Portaferry - it's a one way system in the town, and it starts at a roundabout which is actually a white dot in the road, just as you enter Portaferry. There's no roundabout near Kircubbin - it's just a road straight through. You'll know you're going the right way if you follow signs for the ferry from Newtownards onwards. If you're staying at Barholm hostel, it's just opposite the ferry slip. )

EVERYONE WHO IS FLYING!!!......I have just got off the phone to easyjet to enquire abou their policy on instruments been taken into the cabin and not put in the hold with the other luggage.....Some airlines have different policies. Good news...they have a new policy and instruments can be taken on board BUT the must fit into the over head luggage bins ...the measurements are......40cm x 127cm x 48cm. They prefer you to leave a 10cm gap all round. So measure up you cases guys!!! My large fiddle case will fit in easy with a lot of room to spare!!!

Food and drink

Okay, lunch on the Saturday - I'm going to cook soup or stew and bake a load of bread, and maybe some potatoes or salad, and bring them down to Barholm for us all to eat - I figure it'll be easier than everyone trying to squeeze into Chez Devlin's (my parent's place).

Foodwise, for those self--catering - there are several grocery shops in Portaferry, one of which is on The Square, and another near The Square at the bottom of High Street.
There's a cafe (called "The Square") in (surprise!) The Square, but my sister informs me it's only open Wednesday to Saturday. There's also one called, I believe, Deli-licious. It does the typical lard-loaded Ulster Fry.
There are two chip shops - Joe's Hot Spot and The Ferry Grill, in the same locations as the two shops I just mentioned. There are also two Chinese restaurants, one of which is nearby on High Street. There are some "posher" restaurants - The Cornstore (on the way from Barholm up to The Square) and the designer-organic Narrows along the seafront.

Pubwise, I imagine we'll spend most time in Fiddlers Green and Dumigans. Avoid The Quiet Man - if you're over 18 you're too old for it!

A meet for the early people in Fiddlers, perhaps? Then off to the hostel where it has been said we can play in the conservatory. Then we'll leave a message for the later arrivals as to where we're going that night.

Saturday
Lunch in Barholm (cooked by me - hard luck!) at 2pm, provided I can bring the food down there (but since most people are staying there it shouldn't be a problem).
The rest of Saturday is open to anything that goes. Possibly culminating in a session in Dumigan's, all being well. (Thought - if it's sunny and warm, there's also outdoors!)

Whatever we want!

So there you go - the weekend is what we make it. And very laid back and open to all sorts of suggestions (the weekend, not me... Well, maybe if there was drink involved...). ;)

Just been chatting with 'Mine Host Linda' and as she's going to be off-site from mid-evening Friday, it might be a good idea if anyone who wants cooked breakfasts for them to phone & book them with Linda before the weekend so they've an idea what to expect. I'm definitely going for it *g*

By the way - for lunch on Saturday I'm making a big pot of Irish stew, and a big pot of pea soup (vegan-friendly). There'll be homemade wheaten bread as well, hopefully.

I'm getting very excited. My ma has been on Mudcat too, following the thread. She's been spreading the word and there's musicianer types other than Catters who'll also be making their way to Portaferry, all being well.

Guru: Thanks for the offer of a lift but it looks as though the timing is a bit wrong and it would be very inconvenient on the return journey. In fact, according to the local bus timetable I should be able to get to Portaferry at about 17.00, even though I will have a 1 hr wait at the City Airport. So I think I'll go for that option - it'll also prepare me for the connections for the return journey. Looking forward to seeing you again after the Straw Bear Festival.

Mighty jealous I'm not going - thought I'd be in hospital too by now, but me ops been put for 18 March (I was very careful - and insisted I wasn't in hospital for the 17 March).

Sounds like you are going to have a good time there! I'd love to come, but I've also just bought a new house with me fella. So, money is tight, and there's rooms full of polystyrene ceilings, super fresco walls, and 60's fireplaces. Jack and Vera Duckworth (for the USA Chums - it's a UK Soap - Corronation Street) stone cladding on another fireplace, and a rather quaint Rayburn room heater (coal/wood burner) to contend with and is taking alot of my time!

It's all very exciting, but before I go in for me op I'm intending in getting at least the ceiling tiles down - as they are a fire hazard - coal fire and polystyrene tiles - NOOOOOO!

The coal burner is fast loosing it's staying power, especially when 'im indoors decided to rake it through with the doors open. You can now write your names in several pieces of furniture/doors/shelves.

So, I'll be up to me tonsils (what's left o them) in trying to make it a home, think of me when you are having your knees up. Regards to you all and if you do insist on having a drink for me... I'm rather partial to a Jack Daniels and Diet coke, either that or a pint of mad apples (cider).

After sturggling through a day that weighed heavily due to lack of sleep, the kids have finally left the building, so I'll begin...........

Once upon a time, some bright spark (Fibula-a brilliant budding mudcat gathering organiser, and wonderful person as well) had a good idea for a meeting up of like minds where she lived.She did neglect to state that the area was so wonderfully beautiful, tranquil and welcoming. She let us find that out for ourselves. (Which we did)

Lots of people made their way there.

So I guess this is "Portostock" the first!

Greg, myself and Noreen finally arrived at the airport after negotiating the traffic on the M62 in the fanny magnet substitute. After checking in, we went to the upsatirs departure lounge. "Not many people on this flight" stated Greg, "plenty of time", "there's only four of us". Us three and some bloke in another corner. Of course when the flight was called and we went downstairs there were about three hundred people waiting for the plane!!!!Enough of that.........

So we arrived at Belfast and picked up our car. Set off at high speed for Belfast. Because we were heavily armed with instruments, no one bothered us. Just as well because if we'd have run into trouble we'd have sung and played tunes until they surrendered!!!!!!! After trying all the way through Belfast city centre to find a bloody fish and chip shop (Skipjack being fatigue with hunger) we decided that dieting was the only answer and went on a roller coaster ride to Portoferry. Skipjack in the back like a nodding dog, Noreen, in touch with her masculine side, navigating splendidly. We arrived. Even in the dark we could tell what a wonderful place it was. We didn't hang about, but got into the "Fiddler's Green" where Skipjack and Noreen tried to rid the pub of it's supply of the black stuff that was served with such friendliness by the landlord. (Frank. It was great to see all the Mudcatters that were still standing/ After a couple of gallon, Skip and Noreen, were carried by me back to the hostel, where most had gathered and were singing away, (Merrily?- I think it was verse 87 of the loss of the RMS Lusitania or was it verse 69 of the loss of my maidenhead to Sir rodderick the rapist, well something like that. The boozy crowd of rowdies, led by Micca and others were falling off chairs and generally getting to know one another in various kinds of ways-some of them obviously knew one another in other kinds of ways, but that is not my business and yours either!!! (But for a sum of $5.00 each donated to Mudcat, I'll send you the details for blackmail!)

Skipkack finally got his chips which floated around in his distended drink filled stomach like a cork in the ocean. I enjoyed what was left of mine after such welcoming comments as " Oh bloody hell, he's here-look he's got chips, give us one (or many) mate".

So robbed of me chips I had to get me own back and sung a song!!!

At about 03.00 or so, we decided to call it quits and finally got into bed at about 03.30 having had a bloody good night, so far!!!!!!!

"Take me" said Skip!!!- I thought, what a stupid bastard! Saying that in front of Alanww who was pretending to be asleep, but peeking. Skipkack knew full well, rolling aound on his stomach and purring would be no good at all (He'd left his trousers on!!!) So He remained "boxer intacta" and went to bed crying his eyes out at another rejection. Alanww of course faired better, but I'm not telling, ask him why he was so bleary eyed the next morning?
Well so far, that's Friday night written about instead of doing my record keeping, so I'll do some more later.

Despite Alanww's protestations the morning came, the sun rose and the window finally stopped rattling from the snoring of Greg and Alan. The air was thick and slightly green from the noxious gases emmitted from various parts of the human body. I myself just thought it was a bit foggy.Breakfast was served to a (mostly) group of people with eyes like battling dogs bollocks!! Cllr managed to view his breakfast and saw the oil that should be poured on troubled waters,promptly saying "euch I'm gonna peu....." (We had it later for lunch when it had cooled down a bit) (Ulster fryup must be Gaelic for dripped in dripping and left to swim) and an assortement of weary looking heads munched up and down like yoyo's in a toyshop.People decided to do their own thing, but only after Skip had been presented with his birthday present by the lovelly Hil (can't spell;my guru always said!)

To his delight his birthday cake came ready packaged, but the only problem was that he had to open all the packages and make it himself.(Considering the state of him, he decided to rise to this-but I have it on good authority that he rises to many challenges, but I've never seen this myself you understand)He told me later, that he hadn't had as much fun opening something since he tore open his first condom. Said he'd rise to that as well.(He is a man of great experience and can even give you the address of a lap dancing club in Cannes)Amongst this rabble and hotspotch of lowly musicians, head and shoulders above the rest-well, he, is tall, stands Mooman and the lovelly Lady McMoo. Who as model citizens, responsible parents stayed sober, never touched a drop of the demon drink, behaved impecabily, showed superb musicianship and patience when dealing with the rest of the peasents.(Sorry, did I mean Richard and Pat? Oh sod it, stick them in with the rest of us)

So sober'ish at last, Noreen who, none the worse for wear of the night before, well that's what SHE said, though I have my doubts! Skipjack and I set off for a drive round. What the rest of them did, you'd have to ask them-but I wouldn't believe their lies!

Returning to Friday for a brief pause whilst we drive round the Ulster countryside.

The hostel, ideally placed facing the lough is an excellent place, no one to disturb us, we could make merry into the early hours of the morning. I was only awakened by the opening and closing of several doors from the landings below us, but I have no further knowledge of that.The really excellent Fib has done us proud and the Citern player with excellent taste in instruments (I am sorry to not remember your name)was just one of the local people who made us truly feel as though we'd lived there all our lives.

Some points of information for future tourists; there arn't many sheep around the area, except one flock that were being cunningly hidden in a field of very long sprout stalks. If I find out who told the farmer to do this, you're dead. By the time we had sped past them, it was too late and the moment had passed in the flicker of a bloodshot eye, despite Skip and Noreen telling me to turn the car round and they'd find "something to do" whilst I "observed" the sheep.

The ferry makes a great background noise for field recordings and it is a pity that the singers were so poor that they couldn't hum and sing in the same key as to set a resonant frequency response-Micca will put a ditty onto the cat. (Shouldn't say that really, as from what I've been told, he put more than his ditty into-sorry, onto the Cat on Sunday morning. No wonder she said "she was full of it"-Cold I mean!!!) Neither could us musicians? well that's what someone said we were trying to be, tune our instruments low enough to cover the throbbing of the engines, except Skipjack, but he uses his bass notes to cover his other wind driven noise making equipment.

Saturday afternoon lunch was served by the lovelly Fib and Co.Lunch was the tradditional Irish dish;Soup in a basket. Really, Irish stew. Absolutley delicious. Three varieties (all in one bowl-Only teasing) though I believe that's what some tried to do, as the serious musicians (including Skipjack-it was his birthday) recorded a ditty called the "Duck in the canal"? or something like that. By the way, if you do get to listen to it, I'm the one playing out of tune and the wrong notes, Richard is playing the right notes, and Skip is the one pretending to be the ferry hooter. There was enough stew left for us "professionals" (well, we had just made a recording) to grab several bowls full and delicious it truly was.

Then onto the music and Mrs Dunnigan's. Jude stole all the ashtrays (I think she put them in her handbag) and the guiness flowed as freely as water from a morning spring and lovelly it was. Considering there were so few of us I don't think the landlord need have shouted "better ring up Dublin for a new lorry full, there's a hoard of piss artists arrived". But undeterred by this (you couldn't be an artist and piss there because the toilet had no roof and graffiti was washed of as it was written. (Though I beleive some were trying to write their names as they wee'd like small boys do)A toilet with an astromonical observatory I've never seen before-might fit into a song!

We played and played all day and all evening, and half the night, some played with each other, some played with semselves. Skip, Moo, Noreen and myself found ourselves outside, then inside "Fiddler's green" at about 23.00hrs.(Try doing that in England!) Where we played and played again, much to the amusement of the crowd. They welcomed us like long lost brothers. When we played, they said they wished we has stayed lost.Actually we had the most brilliant evening, early morning. Playing until about 02.30. Frank the landlord, did his spot, great voice. Then we played some more. then we were lucky enough to meet a potential new member (he might sign up as Bun or something like that-talk about bloody excellent player and singer)The crowd went wild for him and then they let us play again until everyone was sick of us and went home. Skipjack managed to drink enough to water the desert the next day, he played so fast you couldn't see his fingers move. Often they didn't and he missed all the notes of several or more tunes leaving Richard, Noreen and me to fill in for him.One guy, who was quite merry told me I was playing chords he'd never even seen before, but that was because my fingers were hitting all the wrong frets and not the strings.We finally went home. As we arrived, the singers got up and walked out pretending they were going to bed or something. We played and sung some more.04.00 came and as the sun was starting to rise over Norway, we decided we'd go to bed. well some of us decided we try and go to someone elses bed-so I've been told, but I wouldn't believe everything I write, even if I've written it. Skipjack wispered lovingly in my ear he was going to shag me, but the lousy git was so pissed even his birthday cake couldn't rise and he lay face down on the bed-so that buggered that up! (Of course Alanww was peeking again. I think he's a pervert!!!)

More later-me wrist is aching from all the action of the weekend, and me fingers are on fire at the ends from all the playing-no that's not right, it's me cigar burning them.

On the recording of the more serious musicians Im the one playing Skips lovely fiddle badly....so why I was with the 'serious' bunch I will never know.....must be the side effects of the amount of the gorgeous smooth black stuff that was so easily consumed all day and the night before!!!

Yes I was and still am full of cold....going to keep my mouth shut about the 'other'!! I was told by Frank (the landlord) that the Irish air was doing me some good as I had a complextion similar to the Mona Lisa......It was earlier in the day and I had decided (along with the rest of the group) to carry on drinking early so not to lose any effect!!!......So to cut it short...I was hung over and pale!!!

Talking about foul emmitions......a lovely meal was cooked on the Sunday evening by Paul and Jude for the remaining people along with a grand selection of veggies.....includding cabbage and sprouts......THE Award for clearing the bar area the quickest goes to Alan ww!!!......having said that we all were 'tooting' away merrily with our bottom burps!!!

Really want to go back soon.....So Fibs......are you going to arrange another meeting??!!! Count us in again!!! Thank you

Anyway. When I see that Terry Silver again, he's dead, because I remeber he sung a terrible song, picked at infamously fast speed (How he got his name-he tells us!)Concerning my rubbish, plywood, Japanese guitar. I'll have your strings for that my son. Very funny it was too.

Where did I get too? Ah, I remember. The landlady of the fidler's bought us a drink on Saturday night if we'd shut up and stop playing, but we fooled her, by drinking it quickly between tunes and carried on playing-she didn't do that again!Frank (The landlord)tried on Sunday, but it didn't work either. We aren't so easily shut up, we can out perform anyone with terrible playing. In fact we got a gig there booked already as torture for American tourists!

Everyone we met was really great, both inside and out. The local musicians who let us crash their sessions, and put up with my playing, the people, who'd chat to you in the street. Fib's parents. The honour of meeting John and Philipa with their incredible knowledge.

There are many events and little annecdotes (That's what skip call me-his little antidote) and I forget many. Jude's son Robert-who scored and wasn't ever seen again! Jude's partner Paul, who owes me £10.00 for fixing the tele so he could watch the footie.Jude, who never platted my pony tail and so owes me a plat, at least-though I got a 3D hug.

Sunday-When the light finally shone through the window, about an hour (it seemed) after we'd got to bed. I awoke, which was luck or else I'd have been dead and not writing (Don't start!)There was this terrible sound like a steam train rushing through a tunnl backwards, like the thunder and crashing, snorting of a thousand horses, but it was only Alanww. He was also mumbling in his sleep. "Why do you reject me skip?" I think he was asleep or was he recalling some other earlier experince that I misssed as I slept the sleep of the just-I'll never find out as I promised I'd never tell anyone!

Breakfast!! A sort of hush fell over the assemblage and the eyes were the same as before, only worse and much redder. Cllr couldn't face his again and left 11/12th of it. Noreen couldn't eat much of hers, many people left theirs or bits of theirs. I eat all of mine, as did Micca, who claimed that he'd just worked up a grand appetite. Cat was full of it and couldn't chew in case she dribbled. (I always knew she was clever, because she can read dots on bits of paper and make music from them) and had a grin like a cheshire-cat that is not cheese! Skipjack lay in bed, despite me telling him he'd be late for school.To which he replied, "leave me alone mum, I feel sick". He then had the bloody nerve to turn over and aask me to write him a note.Eventually he fell downstairs and declared that he'd lost his memory (not mammary) and didn't know where he was.His cake, which he had prepared and worn the day before, was still sitting festering in the kitchen waiting to be cooked.After breakfast, many of us got free rides on the ferry to the other side-I'm told that they wanted us to pay over £100.00 to be taken back, as the locals had bribed the captain to get rid of us.But in the gloriously warm sunlight, with the blue sky and clear blue water we were having none of that, and upon the threat of singing,were taken back for free as well. (It might have had something to do with the people of Strangford standing there with shotguns threatening to, "kill the bloody bastard on the ferry if you leave that lot on our side".) So, some of us packed our bags. Some of us dissapeared for a while-well Skipjack did, when I finally found him, he said he'd been for a shower. he didn't look much better and I told him he was a bloody shower. To which he replied "Burp". So that had the desired effect.He put his bun in the oven and it came out with a cloacha! He said he'd put some icing on that-I told him not to be disgusting!

We went to the Fiddler's and started to play. The pub emptied in 2 minutes flat-a new record!!!!We took photo's, drew raffles, won prizes, played tunes, drunk coffee-The alcoholics amongst us, who were staying and not driving put more filthy liquor down their throttles.(Evil disgusting people-you know who you are.)Noreen finally met Gargoyle, but swoped him for some mysterious white powder to smuggle back through customs! I don't know where she put it, and I don't think it meant anything when she asked skip if he had any condoms! Skipjack held an "Icing on the cake workshop" He told me that he often out the icing on the cake, but I didn't know what he meant by that and let it slip, it slipped onto the floor, but Richard picked it up and put it back in his mouth.Everyone was foolish enough to eat a bit of his cake- I don't think it impressed the locals him standing there saying, "You eat of my body" and then with a pint of Guinnes saying "you drink of my blood". Nor did it go down well when he wanted to play the "Irish march set", but as his fingers wern't working again, he didn't, so it was alright.

It was time for us to go. So we went. After the photo's and causing a traffic jam and going all the way to Drumergadie (or somewhere, sounds ike that) to look at the sea. We finally arrived at the airport. Skip spent the last hour snoring in the back (sounded like a big bore exhaust) Noreen re-met her masculine side and navigated-"go down this road" she said. We got the car back in time, got on the plane and came home.

Litle things. Fib, I am so glad you have cess pools in the road-very handy! Frank- you owe Skip a couple of pints-very silly! We'll be back to collect them!!!

It was the most wonderful time.

Just arrived home...I think we were the last to leave and leaving Portaferry was hard. Many thanks again to the wonderful Fibula and her lovely family for organizing a great weekend.

I have very little to add to Eric the Viking's entirely accurate account of the proceedings. We were on the ground floor and know nothing of any alleged nocturnal "activities" but there were indeed several very loud bonks bumps overhead during the not so early hours of the mornings.

For an essentially non-drinker, I managed to consume a surprisingly large quantity of the evil black stuff though, from breakfast recollections, not as much as the assembled multitudes. EtV managed to leave a very important detail out of the cake-icing workshop account (the process was carried out in the Fiddler's). Greg managed, with great delicacy and finesse, to beautifully decorate the cake with bright fluorescent icing....not with his name but, for some unexplained reason, the word "ARSE!". I got a bit of the exclamation mark and did, indeed, eat it off the Guinness-sodden floor.

I can vouch for the noxiousness of alanww's rear emission as reported above (as I was the closest person to him at the time of the atrocity. I believe the inpectors should be recalled from Iraq immediately as alan's arse presents an infinitely greater threat to mankind and (thinking of my friend CarolC...the ozone layer). This potent chemical weapon needs to be decommissioned immediately not least because 'Spaw may be knocked off his perch as champion practicioner in this particular area.

Being a gentleman of the highest degree I did not peek at all while Cats was removing her bra during the bra-swapping session.

I hope Micca does post up the authentic field recording done in the conservatory to the acdcompaniment of the ferry revving up and I do hope Lily Ani is not traumatised for life by the lullaby recorded for her.

It's well past midnight here in The Surreal Kingdom of Belgium so I'll knock off for now for some shut-eye and will try to complement the further recollections of a memorable weekend that will surely be posted by others.

Frank says he's delighted you all enjoyed yourselves. Liam (the citern player, who should post for himself!) also had a blast. My parents thought you were all wonderful - a far cry from the evil axe-wielding maniacs they expected their daughter to hook up with online.
I'm off to see Jackie now - he's devastated that he missed the rest of the weekend. Then again, he probably got the most wasted of all of us, sky high on morphine on Saturday morning!

Fib: That was a fantastic weekend, thanks so much for getting it off the ground. Now, let's get next year sorted so that people have time to book cheap flights & commit themselves! Booking the whole hostel sounds best, surely we can get enough interest. Barholm is an excellent 'base' and 'Mine Host Linda' has said that although the accomodation is only for 50, there's a lot of leeway with spare 'put-you-up's' etc :-)

Thanks too to Fib's Family and the whole town for welcoming us with open arms! My best wishes to Jacky for his recovery - what a superb voice he has there. (Please tell him I had the same thing a while back - I know exactly what he suffered - thank goodness for morphine!) Hope he gets a chance to take a crack at 'Thaney' - when he hears the original version by 'Malinky' (on their 3 ravens CD) I think he'll be surprised - it's so much better when Karine Polwart sings it with all their instrumentation. Mine is a poor imitation.

Ferrying the 'lad' up to the top of the world on Sunday meant I missed the Cake icing session (so glad you rose to the challenge Skip), the raffle & group photo etc. Micca's going to be a bit technical later on & try to get me in the photo which would be wonderdful *g* Also missed goodbye hugs from Skip, Eric & Noreen so I'll claim those for the next time we meet!

Being a relatively recent Folkie and a novice at gathers and festivals I was delighted to be made so welcome (I think) by the Catters at the first 'Portstock', roll on next year & all the other good bits in between. Thanks all, may you always have music....

I do hope you get your back sorted PDQ. I had a back problem myself a few years ago and I found one particular exercise helped enormously. I therefore showed it to Fib's mum, ie Lily(?) if I recall her name right, in the middle of a session at Fiddler's.

I was hands and knees on the floor alternately stretching out my right arm along with my left leg and then left arm with my right leg! I looked a right prat but who cares if you find it helpful too! I did it for 10 minutes three times a day even for a few months after the pains that I had been getting had gone.

Anyway mend quickly, good singing and I hope to see you at Portastock next year!

An abiding memory, of which The Viking would surely have written had he arrived at that point, was the opening song of the proceedings in the Fiddlers Green.

One local, at least, had to be forcibly restrained as Micca burst forth into song with his parody "The Hash Me Father Scored" sung to the tune of a certain song with a similar-sounding title.

The regulars seemed to enjoyed it after the initial couple of bars and panic had subsided and the rest of us recovered too although the experience upped the initial blackstuff count!

I heard about that,and the plot to kidnap him afterwards and dump him in the lough. (Sorry Cat-but you said you wanted the insurance!) But, I was also there when someone tried to play the local session closing tune but I believe that only a gentle hint was given that is was the end tune. (Can't remember which tune it was-Richard will know)

Skipjack wrote "arse" on his cake because he told me in utter confidence that was what was on his mind.I promised not to tell anyone, so I wont.I have also the story about Skipjack wanting to play musical candles! But only Noreen knows the truth about that. This week has flown by, and I haven't done half as much work as I needed to do. The weekend and next week will be exremely busy.

I am quite suprised that there have been no obituraries this week after Skipjacks cooking of his cake.

Looking back, it was a splendid weekend and if meeting up in Holland goes even half as well, we'll be in for a really good time.

Micca, great photo's so far, and has cat stopped dribbling yet?

So next year looks like a rematch, get the dates, and we'll book early for the weekend.

Oh that was me Eric! How was I to know that "The Resting Chair" was the local session closing tune...it isn't even an Irish or a traditional one! But, as you say, the "piss off and stop playing that...it's the end tune!" message was delivered in the best possible humour and with great gentleness and decorum by the delightful local musicians. However...I shall know better for next year! This of course may be why we were banned from the lock-in at Dunigan's on the Saturday!

I am still wondering why the excellent Eamonn Bannon from the Saturday night in the Fiddlers isn't an international superstar. I have now added his superb slow arrangement of "I'll tell me ma" back into my repertoire.

I believe the reason I didn't die after eating Skip's cake with its fluorescent turquoise icing is that my bit was fully sterilised by the Guinness on the floor from which I ate it.

I am marking the dates for next year in already in my planner and really hope that Mickus Maximus and some other American/Canadian friends may be able to join us next time...that would be really great.

Can't believe it's a week since we viewed each other over breakfast looking for signs of life, only to find very few amongst the survivors.(Of course some of us wondered if you were dead or kidnapped Hil, and were collecting used bottle tops for the ransom, just in case)Skipjack, has written in his book of knowledge (very thin!) that you owe him a goodbye hug.

Great pictures Micca, unusual to see skipjack decked out in cake mix, he's usually just foaming at the mouth. You might be pleased to know that we all survived the week and Skip, Noreen and I had a reunion at his session on Friday.

Skipjack is very pleased that everyone is planning his birthday party next year and has vowed to buy everyone who attends at least 2 pints each!!!!

Actually he has a tight hold of "Frank's IOU a couple of pints", and is having his best forgers working on an exact match of paper, vintage Guiness stains and pen used to replicate an unlimited number of them which he will gladly distribute to the poor and needy of this parish.So life returns to it's dull normallity and we look forward to more pictures and music with throbbing ferry background.

Hil, believe it or not, I have enough bottle tops to make about 4 big jingle sticks-well Skip says he "wants a big one". I've just got to be totally bored enough to do it!

Sinsull. You've obviously got it wrong! And I hate to correct you in public (me and Skip do corrrection in private!! Ask Alanww) But next year you need; Green wellies and camo-flage (deliberate spelling)suit. I told you the sheep are there, but hiding in the sprout stalks! Don't bring Asprin-the parrots eat em all (Paracetamol-old joke!) You do need to bring a size Double D cup bra, an out of tune bodhran, and a "mountain" green suit.As for your arse- if you leave it at home it will be safe, because you can't have your cake and eat it!

As for the port and massage oil-My Guru should explain that combination, but I warn you-if you get massaged, and drink port, you will have disappeared by the Sunday morning!!!!(Others have! and only re-appear in the ether!)

So if you're silly-sorry, brave enough to do it. Me n Skip will welcome you with open arms next year!!!

No Eric, it was cllr's port and my chocolate scented massage oil that kept disappearing and a variety of people then reappeared with smiles on their faces. Copious amounts of the smooth black stuff also kept disappearing along with people's ability to focus the next day, but perhaps the less said about that the better.

The couple who joined us in Barholm on Saturday night were Pat & ?? & I've sent a piccie to Micca for onward sending to Pene. They sang some very funny songs & kindly brought a fine bottle of their homemade gin (?? Tree Gin) which went down very well indeed. This is probably why I can't remember much of Saturday evening *g*

If I can get my back sorted out (probably an op) I'll work on improving my massage skills throughout the next year - despite reciprocation we can't leave all the hard work to Cllr can we? So Jude, please lay in stocks of that chocolate scented massage oil ready for the next Loughstock!

I've just worked out that given that to block book the whole hostel for 2 days costs £750, at a normal cost of £12 per person per night we would need 32 people (staying 2 nights each) for us to break even, anything more than that and we have a surplus. The hostel can hold up to 50. At such relatively short notice there were 18 booked in, with more time to plan (& save pennies) do we think we could get 32 or more to make it worth booking the whole place?

It's a natural rock formation that looks for all the world as if it's a giant paved path leading into the sea. There's a folk tale about how it used to be part of a huge bridge linking ireland to scotland.
