You can find LPs on eBay sometimes at a reasonable price. The CDs available at amazon.com look pretty much like what you already have, except for one of children's songs.

I have about 2 dozen Ed McCurdy albums and only 3 are available on CD. For some reason he has been overlooked for re-issues. A cheesy compliation of the Dalliance series was recently issued as "Naughty and Bawdy" - a term that Ed would hate.   He was adamant that his recordings were "erotic". He once told me "Oscar Brand sings bawdy ballads, my songs are erotic".

Unfortunately the rights to some of Ed's recordings were sold over the years and I'm not sure who has the legal rights to issue them today.   Ed recorded some classic LP's. In addition to the Dalliance series I highly recommend "Blood Booze and Bones" and "Ballad Singers Choice". He recorded a number of maritime albums in Canada that are harder to find but superb.   His last "official" LP was recorded around 1967 and titled "Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream". I believe that was the first time he actually recorded his song, although he wrote it many years earlier and it was already a "classic".   

In his later years he issued a marvelous cassette tape. The cassette featured what I consider his greatest performance of "Strangest Dream", recorded with a childrens chorus. Ed sold it by mail and I don't think that is available at this time.

I'm glad to see there is still interest in his work. I hope some record company will wake up and issue some of these recordings.   I had the pleasure of interviewing Ed and spending some time with him while he was still in NYC. He was one of the most unique individuals I ever met and his talents have been sadly underappreciated.   Let's keep our fingers crossed for new releases, and in the meantime - check out EBAY!

My pleasure Campo! I'm glad you enjoy them!   Ed recorded a number of wonderful albums in the late 50's and early 60's, and they sold in decent numbers. That is one reason you will find them on e-bay and in used record stores. E-bay is a great source for find recordings from artists like Ed.

Ed became ill during the mid-60's, and he also suffered from some alcohol problems.   While he overcame these, he was eclipsed and largely forgotten by the folk revival. It is a real tragedy in my view as I think Ed was brillant and deserves more credit then he received. He was incredibly supportive of new artists and was one of the early supporters of Fast Folk (originally the Coop) and Speakeasy. He continued to write and record, some on Folkways and some self-released, and eventually he moved to Novia Scotia.   I consider Ed, as a musician, to be in the same class as Pete Seeger and Dave Van Ronk.

I hope that someone will consider re-issuing his recordings.   To my knowledge, there are only 3 CD's available.   "Naughty and Bawdy" (Ed would have hated that title as he considered his songs erotic, not bawdy) is a cheap compilation of the Dalliance series, there is a re-issue of the Childrens Song on CD, and the best CD issue is the Cowboy Songs from Traditions which is now issued by Fantasy.   I think it is a crime that Blood, Booze and Bones - an album that influenced many artists including Tom Paxton, is not available. I really miss Ed and I hope more people will someday discover his music.

I wasn't around at the time, but I spoke to people who remember the early days of Ed McCurdy's arrival in Halifax.

He was a pillar of the folk community for many years until health issues reared its head. Clary Croft would be a perfect person to talk about Ed McCurdy's years in Halifax.

When forced to break up my father's record collection after his death, I let the more "popular" recordings go to my brother, figuring that I'd be able to replace those most easily. That included all of the McCurdy albums. I do have tapes of them and I photocopied all of the liner notes, but it isn't the same. I assumed the world would have lots of CD's of McCurdy's old recordings. Now I'll cross my fingers that someone figures out that this body of work needs an new life!

Ed had a program on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in the early 50s. His theme song was Cotton-eye Joe. He was living in Nova Scotia then. I love his versions of "Black is the color of my true love's hair," and sea songs Like "Lukie's boat is painted green" and
"The squid-jiggin' ground." I had his album "Lyrica Erotica" but lost it along the way. I've watched for any sign of him for years. I just looked up the lyrics for "Under the willow tree" and came aupon all this.

I well remember listening to his radio programme in the '50s.As a young lad I always loved hearing him sing. IMO he is one of the most overlooked of singer-songwriters. I used to like especially his version of "Tickle Cove Pond".

I performed on the same bill as Ed McCurdy at a small pro-peace event at Dalhousie University in the late '70s or early '80s, just after he had moved to Halifax. I had no idea who he was, although I was aware of the buzz concerning his move to Halifax. Anyway, we chatted, and he wanted to know all about who I was and what I was about, and was very encouraging ...

My other memory of him is from an after-party for the Atlantic Folk Festival, maybe that following summer. It was in one of those big old wooden Halifax houses, packed with exuberant revellers and musicians. Looking through a doorway into a room, I saw Ed McCurdy sitting straight-backed on a straight-backed wooden chair, both hands propped on top of a cane, singing Amazing Grace, in that deep, wonderful voice. The room was packed with a silent, spellbound crowd of young people, many sitting literally at his feet. Not exactly the big time, but it must have been a satisfying moment for him.

A couple of albums to add to the above lists with songs not listed at Folk Music index:
"Treasury of American Folk Song", Elektra EKL 205, accompanied by Erik Darling. 2 disc set. Features many songs not listed at Folk Music Index.
"Folk Songs of the Sea - WINDJAMMER", Spin-O-Rama #M 128. Artist listed a Chad Willis and the Beachstones, but it is unmistakeably Mr. McCurdy.
I also have an album of Cowboy Songs (can't find it at the moment) on a no-name label. One side, again is McCurdy under pseudonym.
Finally I have a McCurdy album on Spin-O-Rama #S 122,"Folk Songs and Hootenanny" which has a couple of songs not listed above. The strange thing about this album is that the photo is not Ed Murdy...or an extremely young EM (I doubt it), and the back of the album cover has line art of Hank Williams!

BTW, I believe Fok Music index is run by one Jane Keefer. About sixteen months ago I offered to add to her database from my quasi-extensive collection (about 500 LPs from about 1956), but she wanted copies of the recordings in addition to the information, and thought that was a bit much to ask.

She has done a great service with what she's provided, however.

Ed also was selling a cassette tape of his songs in his later years. It was called "Songs after 60" and it contained a version of Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream that was recorded with a choir of children - it may be the most beautiful recording of all.

Also, I shoud correct something I wrote several years ago in this th read. The LP "Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream" was recorded in 1976, not 1967 as my typo suggests. Tracy Schwarz and Hedy West helped produce the LP which was issued by Bear Family Records in Germany.

I'm not sure of the dates of the two Folkways LP's that ed recorded with his son Dana - one was a gospel album and the other childrens stories.

Also, there is another thread about "Miracle of the Wheat", a 45 that Ed recorded in the late 1950's.   Apparently this is a very rare recording and much sought after by folks in Cincinnati. I get requests each year for copies, which I'm afraid I cannot legally supply.

Mccurdy's version of Tickle Cove Pond is the definitive one.I had it but lost it. When I was ayoung boy in the fifties, I remember passing McCurdy on Preston Street in Halifax. I recognized him from TV. Within a 100 feet of that spot lived our neighbors, the McCurdys. Thirty years later, when he moved to Halifax, I used to serve him at a newsstand I worked at. He looked great. Bearded, flowing hair, tweed cape, big imposing man with a formal but friendly manner and well dressed and still pleased to be recognized.

'Stangest Dream' is one of my favorite songs ever. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform years ago, probably the late 60's at the Caffe Lena in Saratoga. It remains in my memory as one of the most remarkable performances ever. He was clearly in some physical discomfort, probably with his back, as he was on a tall stool, and had trouble being comfortable. He did sit/stand really upright. He also had some trouble playing his nylon stringed guitar. In spite of all this, he held the audience in the palm of his hand all night long, all three nights. His voice was a gift from God. What a performer and entertainer. He knew how to connect with and audience in a way I have seldom seen. We all sang strangest dream together. Yes, he was amazing, and I am glad to see this thread about him. I think of him, and his performances often when I am trying to understand what is important in performance, entertaining and life in general.

I first saw Ed at the Mariposa Folk Festival in Orillia, Ontario in 1961. He did a main stage performance and did a vocal workshop where he would criticise (positive and negative) the voices of volunteers from the audience.
My wife and I saw him at a later Mariposa (late '80s or early '90s)in Barrie. He and Jamie Snider were singing "Last Night I Had..." when Joan Baez came onto the stage and stuck her head between them and sang a harmony line.
During that same era, maybe a few years later, Ed came to Cobourg's Waterfront Festival and I was given the job of chauffeuring him around.
He told me what a thrill he had gotten from having Joan Baez comeout and sing with him. He had had a huge crush on her in the sixties. He flirted shamelessly with my wife and drew some lovely pictures for my kids.
He told the audience that he had changed the words of his famous song from "The room was filled with men" to "Filled with women and men." He even handed out lead sheets with the new words and had the audience sing along.
During dinner he recounted many tales of the people he had known and recounted anecdotes about his folk friends. An enjoyable weekend and a lovely man.

Ed McCurdy (January 11, 1919 – March 23, 2000) was an American folk singer ... His single "Miracle of the Wheat" released on Kapp Records in 1956 ...... Ed McCurdy recorded "The Miracle of the Wheat" in 1958.

The American folk singer delivers the lyrics in a robust baritone voice. Intoning every word, he sounds if he were Dickens' ghost of Christmas present.

The "Miracle" takes place on a farm "in Dakota" on a frigid Dec. 24. A farmer whose wheat crop has failed hears a knock at his door. Two travelers, "I am Joseph, with my good wife, and Mary is her name," need a place to stay. The farmer shows them to the barn. In the night, he hears an infant cry.

At dawn, he awakes to find a field of golden wheat. He runs to the barn to spread the news of the miracle. But the travelers are gone. They've left a Bible with a passage circled:

"Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."

I was lucky enough to be Ed's chauffer when he played at Cobourg's Waterfront Festival many years ago. He had many interesting stories to tell about Joan Baez (He had a monsterous crush on her*), Judy Collins and Stacey Keach and Merrick Jarrett. He said he completed Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream at Merrick's kitchen table and Merrick was not overly enthusiastic about the song when he showed it to him. He was also a shameless flirt and flirted with my wife whether or not I was present.

I performed on the same bill as Ed McCurdy at a small pro-peace event at Dalhousie University in the late '70s or early '80s, just after he had moved to Halifax. I had no idea who he was, although I was aware of the buzz concerning his move to Halifax. Anyway, we chatted, and he wanted to know all about who I was and what I was about, and was very encouraging ...

My other memory of him is from an after-party for the Atlantic Folk Festival, maybe that following summer. It was in one of those big old wooden Halifax houses, packed with exuberant revellers and musicians. Looking through a doorway into a room, I saw Ed McCurdy sitting straight-backed on a straight-backed wooden chair, both hands propped on top of a cane, singing Amazing Grace, in that deep, wonderful voice. The room was packed with a silent, spellbound crowd of young people, many sitting literally at his feet. Not exactly the big time, but it must have been a satisfying moment for him.

The Ballad of Alfred Packer refers to at least two songs, one by Phil Ochs and the other by Jack Guinn with help from Katie Lee and Ed McCurdy. Jack was a reporter for the Denver Post and Katie Lee and Ed McCurdy were appearing at the Exodus, a well known Denver folk club in the 60s when the song was written. The whole story is in Katie Lee's book "10,000 Goddam Cattle". The lyrics posted on the Mudcat site are the ones to the Guinn/Lee/McCurdy song.

"It was in his Canadian period that he developed an interest in folk music and released his first folk record in 1949. He had a folk show in New York’s Village Vanguard in 1950 and he moved his family to New York. He became the world’s best-known folk singer. His other professional work was televisions as the “L&M Cigarette man." He was also emcee for the George Gobel show on national TV. Gobel was a very popular comedian at that time. By 1954 Ed had a children’s show "Freddy the Fireman."

From Ottawa, Leonard W. Brockington sends greetings from the nine older provinces to the tenth province of the Dominion.

I am embarrassed to say that my LPs are not in the order I thought they were. And after disturbing and inordinate amount of dust, I resorted to an online search. https://www.amazon.com/MCCURDY-FRANKIE-JOHNNY-vinyl-record/dp/B00Q7BRYHS

Now that I see the cover art I know I don't have this one. That said, I do have some cassette tapes around here of Ed McCurdy that dad recorded for me from his albums and I think he must have borrowed some, because I have more tapes than I can find records they originally came from. In the context of those cassette tapes I'm pretty sure I remember hearing that Frankie and Johnny song, so I'll keep looking. My office ceiling fell in during the summer of 2018 and the entire contents had to be moved out before restoring the ceiling. The tapes were mixed up in the move but are all in one place. From my desk I can see the cabinet where they might be stashed. More later.
