There's A Whole in daddy's arm where all the money goes
I think this song was a John Prine song. Last time
I heard it was in 1971. Anybody got the song in any format or lyrics.

[1993:] There's no one person who was the basis for Sam Stone, more like three or four people, like a couple of my buddies who came back from Vietnam and some of the guys I served with in the Army. At the time, all the other Vietnam songs were basic protest songs, made up to slap each other on the back like "yeah, this is the right cause". I don't remember any other songs that talked about the soldiers at all. I came up with the chorus first and decided I really liked the part about the "hole in Daddy's arm". I had this picture in my mind of this little girl, like little Orphan Annie, shaking her head back and forth while a rainbow of money goes into her dad's arm. I think I invented the character of Sam Stone as a story line just to get around to that chorus. (Notes John Prine, 'Anthology - Great Days')

as an adjunct to the quote Susanne posted above, when John Prine was at the Strawberry Music Festival in Spring of 1986, he did a songwriting workshop where he told the backgrounds of his songs.

He came up with the chorus to Sam Stone while he was a postman. He would deliver monthly veterans checks to homes and wonder what happened to the money.

I saw Prine the other night on a replay of "Sessions at West 54th" on PBS. He told the interviewer, John Hiatt, about going down the the Olde Town School in Chicago while he was still a postman and taking various folk and songwriting things. He mentioned then about going to a club across the street for his first public performance on open mic night and singing three songs he had written. After hearing him, they hired him as a regular of sorts.

The three songs were "Paradise," "Sam Stone," & "Hello In There." No wonder they hired him.

Gee Greg, been huffing the Pam again?

Doubt you would have ever made it through boot camp much less returning from Nam in one piece, mentally or physically.

Ah Yes, BOOT CAMP, the high point of so many loser's lives.

A time of comraderie with the boys and the first time in all their lives that there was a sense of belonging, acceptance and a direction (dictated and commanded by another, who was dictated and commanded by another, who was dictated and commanded by another none thinking clone.

Look at the "Wall" stats and see how many did not survive even their first four months....canon fodder for a third world nation....and all the time chanting the mantra of The Ball Turret Gunner "I did not want to go, they drafted me."

Heros bahh!!!!...I spit in your eye mr. roverranger.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

In my not very humble opinion no-one who didnt serve his time should make any kind of adverse comment about those who DID serve there time, wether as coscripts or volounteers.I was lucky 'cos the nearest I got to real nasty was the last 18 months of the Aden fiasco, and managed to not get shot at at all except by our side, but thats another story.

Thanks for one helluva shock, Harpgirl! I looked at that list you linked and saw a guy I hung out with in high school and haven't seen since. Instantly transported back 31 years. I can't take that too often. Too weird.

I know better - I really do - Gargoyle - how about going and fucking yourself. You are the kind of sorry assed dirt bag that makes any type of committment a joke. It's not about right or wrong - it's about what happened to alot fo people and your lack of empathy is staggering. Hope your old lady, if one will put up with you, gives you the clap.

Welcome home and here Ray -

Ignore Gargoyle - he's the guy that spit on us when we came home. Nice of him to admit it though. Fucking puke -

Steve

Paul Kimsey, from Bethesda, MD. I knew him from band, where he played clarinet and I played trombone. We played a lot of cards, skipped a lot of classes, and narrowly avoided getting in lots of trouble several time, about which the less said, the better. (Not sure about statutes of limitations, ha ha!)

(I understand
your feelings, Steve but I think your post should be edited as per Joe's informal rules) ( And hey, Joe, I never said you were wrong about your last choice. I just don't like censorship in general)

Harpgirl - you are probably correct - my apologies to the forum for my language. My intent, however, remains the same. I am firmly in the camp that Gargoyle is the mysterious GUEST that has posted so nastily in the past under many guises. Always virulent and always - - - well nuff of that.

Thanks for the bump HG - Joe - if it needs editing - please do so - or is that something I can do?

Steve
