I am not sure what this song is, but I have a friend that would like to have the words to a song called, "There's a Hole in Daddy's Arm Where All the Money Goes". I told him I'd see if anyone online knew it. This site is so good, it's almost too easy! Thanks for the help. KickyC

(I don't mean to sound grumpy,we like to help... but it is often TOO easy here...people come here instead of doing a quick search)...the trick is not to use caps in the search, since only titles are usually capitalized on pages, and the phrase "there's a hole..".etc., is just part of the lyrics.If you use lower case, Alta Vista will find ANY instance...

I know that the grumpy guy already answered, but it is an opportunity to say that this is a song by John Prine, a terrificaly under-recognized singer/songwriter. If social commentary works for you, they don't get any better than prine.

I saw John Prine live many years ago...he is one who I think may become 'folk' one of these times.(yes, I know,I am slow to admit stuff , even when I like & sing it)."Paradise" (in the database) is already being learned thru oral tradition...(a friend & I drove thru the area of Muhlenberg County mentioned over 20 years ago, and photographed the song...all the elements in it we could find--coal trains, signs, broken bottles, the cooling towers of the power plant, and the leaning outhouse that was all that was left at the town site.)

I'd like to do the same with Jean Ritchie's "Black Waters" some day....helping IT on its way to becoming folk/trad.

Hi, Ted - I think the "Paradise" you're talking about was one is one recorded by the Everly Brothers - I vaguely a song they did that might have had that title. The one that Bill D can't quite bring himself to call "folk" is this one, which is by John Prine. It sounds like it could have been written a hundred years ago. It's one heck a good song. The line I like best is "Where the air smelled like snakes, and we'd shoot with our pistols / but empty pop bottles was all we could kill." We sang Prine's Angel from Montgomery (which is not in the database) this evening. That one ends with the classic line "How the hell can a person go to work in the morning / And come home in the evening and have nothing to say." John sure has a way with words.

Thanks for the help. I'll pass on the information. I have passed on a lot of information myself in the past, and I think this is only the second time I have asked for help. You really shouldn't assume that people are being lazy, sometimes they just don't know as much as you about how to find other sites. Next time I will do a quick search, now that I know there are other places to search.

hmmm...it's a fine line one walks between trying to be helpful and suggesting ways to do it oneself...it would be SO easy in person to show and explain and smile and not sound grumpy...etc. That is why I took the time to suggest search techniques...(I try NOT to assume that the searcher is lazy...and I apologize if I gave that impression..I guess I need to work on gentler ways to make my point...)

"Hole in Daddy's Arm" was the first John Prine song I ever heard and I was amazed that a songwriter could sound so fresh and so old-fashioned at the same time. I've seen John Prine open for many big name acts. They come and go but he's always there and always a joy to listen to.

Tim,

John is still actively singing, recording, and touring. If you go back up the thread to the "click here" you will find more information than you need about recording and touring. You can also access www.ohboy.com. John formed Oh Boy Records, his own company, when he became frustrated with the music business shaping his music.

John still hits the mark frequently for me. Like most singer/songwriters his early albums were the most impressive. I have always figured that the first two or three albums call upon a long history of writing and singing. The songs have developed over a period of maybe 10 or 12 years. During that time, many less powerful songs have fallen by the wayside. The later albums rely on the year or two since the last recording and so have more songs that over time might not have qualified.

In today's market where vanity recordings are more easily produced, this process is less likely to occur because recordings are produced earlier in a performer's career.
