I know this is not folk music but I have played it on an acoustic guitar at a campfire during a canoe trip. So, here ya go!

Bob

SPANISH PIPE DREAM (John Prine)

She was a level-headed woman on the road to alcohol,
And I was just a soldier on my was to Montreal,
When she pressed her chest against me, about the time the juke box broke,
As she gave me a peck on the back of the neck, here's the words she spoke.

Chorus:
Blow up your T.V. Throw away your paper.
Go to the country. Build a little home.
Plant a little garden. Eat a lot of peaches.
Try and find Jesus, on your own.

Well, I sat down at the table and I acted real naive,
For I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve.
But she danced around the bar room and she did the hootchie-coo.
Yeah, she sang her song all night long, tellin' me what to do.

Chorus:
Blow up your T.V. Throw away your paper.
Go to the country. Build a little home.
Plant a little garden. Eat a lot of peaches.
Try and find Jesus, on your own.

Well, I was young and foolish and about to leave that place,
When just as I was leaving, well she looked me in the face.
I said, "You must know the answer." She said, "No, but I'll give it a try."
And 'til this very day, we've been living her way and here's the reason why.

Chorus:
Blow up her T.V. Threw away her paper.
Went to the country. Built a little home.
Had a lot of children. Fed 'em on peaches.
We all found Jesus on our own.

Let's say that John Prine writes in a traditional style both seriously and humorfully about everyday living and reasonably plain folks. It may lack age but I can buy it as "fetal folk"...so to speak.

Some minor qualms:

"she was a level-headed dancer"

"she stared me in the face"

"She said, 'You must know the answer.' I said, 'No,...."

Sure it's folk music just don't tell Peter or Bill.

Gene--thanks for the link. A great website (although I'll never understand why he put the chords in the middle of one-syllable words. Just being picky, --seed

Roger, I transcribed the lyrics many years ago from the first version I ever heard on John Allan Cameron's album, "Weddings, Wakes and Other Things!"

To paraphrase the report I attach to the front of financial projections, "The words may vary from the original, and the variations may be material." Feel free to provide any corrections.

Bob :-)
