Yes. It is a real song, called "Maiden Wine"
Leonard Nimoy put it on one of his albums.
Here is the YouTube link for it.

Recitative in opera wouldn't be really considered singing, would it? (/?r?s?t?'ti?v/, also known by its Italian name "recitativo" ([ret?ita'ti?vo])) is a style of delivery (much used in operas, oratorios, and cantatas) in which a singer is allowed to adopt the rhythms and delivery of ordinary speech. (follow the link to see the proununciation)

Isn't anything that is sung a real song by definition?

It's actually a pretty good song. Certainly better than most of the crap produced by the sixties.

According to Inside Star Trek, there was a clause in Courage's contract allowing for Roddenberry to write lyrics to the theme. Courage later accused Roddenberry of being unethical. That claim was absolute nonsense.

And, by the way, a song without words is still a song, as a poem without a melody is still a song.

The theme from Star Trek was never intended to be a song. Roddenberry wrote the lyrics after the fact.

As for poetry...

JJ, there is nothing wrong with a poet making money by selling his poetry.

I found "Maiden Wine" on YouTube, it's a great song. I'm going to have to learn it.

"Here is a song from Star Trek" should turn a few heads at the next singers' night...

Gene Roddenberry, who was often not a very nice man, wrote the lyrics to the Star Trek theme for one reason -- so that whenever Alexander Courage's music was played, Roddenberry might take half the royalties...

The Roddenberry lyric is exellent. It is the "criticism" which stinks.

Yeah, and it's called "Maiden Wine". The song was composed by Leonard Nimoy (featured on "Star Trek: TOS" episode "Plato's Stepchildren". It's a 2nd track of Leonard Nimoy's 4th album "The Touch of Leonard Nimoy" (1969). Here's the full lyrics, dude:

Take care, young ladies, and value your wine.
Be watchful of young men in their velvet prime.
Deeply they'll swallow from your finest kegs,
Then swiftly be gone, leaving bitter dregs.
Ahh-ah-ah-ah, bitter dregs.

Your time hold precious for youth is your gold
Your beauty like silver will tarnish when old
Memories and dreams shall comfort you not
When the flow of your sweetness is gone and forgot.
Ahh-ah-ah-ah, gone and forgot.

With smiling words and tender touch,
Man offers little and asks for so much.
He loves in the breathless excitement of night,
Then leaves with your treasure in cold morning light.
Ahh-ah-ah-ah, in cold morning light.

Thanks!

On their way, clanmate.

Okay, one more oughta nail up the coffin on the Trekkie songs:

Theme from Star Trek
Lyrics by Gene Roddenberry

Beyond
The rim of the star-light
My love
Is wand'ring in star-flight
I know
He'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love,
Strange love a star-woman teaches.    (I remember that episode)

I know
His journey ends never
His star-trek
Will go on forever.
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me.

Yeah, so he may have been a great producer, but he sure stunk up the page as a lyricist. I liked it better when I thought the words to the theme were:

Oooooo Oooooooo
Loo Loo Loo Loo Loooooo
Oo Loo Loooooo
Loo Loo Loo Loo Looooooooooo....

Uhuru:

Beyond Antares
Lyrics: Gene Coon

The skies are green and glowing
Where my heart is,
Where my heart is,
Where the scented lunar flower is grwoing,
Somewhere beyond the stars,
Beyond Antares.

I'll be back
Though it takes forever.
Forever is just a day.
Forever is just another journey.
Tomorrow I'll stop along the way.

And let the years go fading
Where my heart is,
Where my heart is,
Where my love eternally is waiting,
Somewhere beyond the stars,
Beyond Antares.

Enough, already?

A song can be a good song or a bad song - but either way it's a real song. If it got sung, it's a real song.

Nimoy actually put it out on one of his albums. I think that's all there was to it. (thankfully)

I'm with GuestQ. Yeah, brother.
Too bad Uhuru never recorded "Beyond Antares"

Ever hear Nimoy's "Ballad of Bilbo Baggins?"

Or Shatner's take on "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Lucy in the Sky"? Must bbeheard to be believed.

While you're at it, check out Sebastian Cabot doing "Like a Rolling Stone". You'll shit!

Great key, but great song????
How about that gem from Adam?

Heading out to Eden, yeah, brother.
Heading out to Eden, yeah, brother
No more trouble in my body or my mind,
Going to live like a king on whatever I find.
Eat all the fruit and throw away the rind.
Yeah, brother, yeah.

You know... as sung by Mr Spock in "Plato's Children"

Bb minor... Great key!

Take care young ladies and value your wine
Be watchful of young men in their velvet prime
Deeply they'll swallow from your finest kegs
Then swiftly be gone leaving bitter dregs
Oh, oh oh oh...
Bitter dregs

With smiling words and tender touch
Man offers little and asks for so much
He loves in the breathless excitement of night
Then leaves with your treasure
In cold morning light
Oh, oh oh oh...
In Cold Mornign Light

Is it a real ballad from somewhere? and if it is, does it have more lyrics?
