Subject: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Mar 03 - 12:31 PM I realize these are trying times, and he was "just a dog", but he was a remarkable character and he deserves mention. Besides, there are a handful of people on Mudcat who've met him at one time or another, and been barked at ("Thief! Trespasser! Murderer! Republican!"). I posted about him various times as "my mother's dog", usually for humorous purposes, implying that he was a threat to public order, World peace, etc... Well, he's gone now, after 3 days of having trouble breathing, because his heart was slowing down. He was very old. I paste below his epitaph: Here rests the body of Arnot, the little brown dachshund. Also known as "Arnie", his full name was Peter Arnot. He was an animal with a small body, but a very large personality. In a family consisting of 3 human beings and 2 dachshunds He viewed himself as the absolute ruler, as "the Boss", as Leader of the Pack. At his worst he could be bad-tempered and unreasonable. At his best he could be affectionate and tremendously amusing. He was very smart...smart enough to realize things that most dogs would not even notice. He had a lot of energy, right up till the final few months of his lengthy life. He lived to an age of 15 years, the equivalent of a human age of 105. He died very peacefully, with dignity, at home in the presence of those who loved him. His passing leaves a great silence in this house. We will not foget Arnot. We are glad to have known him. He will live forever...In our minds, in our hearts, and in our souls. Good traveling, Arnot! Blessed be. - LH |

Subject: RE: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: Ebbie Date: 30 Mar 03 - 01:18 PM I like your style, Little Hawk- Peter Arnot indeed! It's good to know that most of us have wonderful, loving and loyal friends waiting on the other side. Keep in mind that he is not grieving your separation- for him your reunion is but a moment away. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Mar 03 - 10:11 PM Thanks for the thoughts, ladies. My mother gave him the "Peter Arnot" name 15 years ago, and I don't think she knew about the human Peter Arnot at all at the time...just one of those weird coincidences. Yes, Ebbie, I expect to see the little guy in Spirit when it comes my time, along with many other dear friends who've moved on. I have no doubt. We'll be burying him as soon as the ground thaws in the backyard. It's bitterly cold out there tonight, and the sky is bright with stars. - LH |

Subject: RE: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: katlaughing Date: 30 Mar 03 - 10:41 PM Sorry that Arnot has moved on, LH. Thanks for sharing him with us. I remember your little stories of him. He sounded like quite a character. I had to have one of our cats, Kazell, put down last Friday. He had a big tumour at the back of his throat and there was nothing to be done. If you look for the thread with his name in it, you can read of how loving and peaceful he was to the end, purring and all. They do live on in our hearts and we will meet with them, again. My condolences to you and your mom and the rest of the critters. {{{{{{{{LH}}}}}}}}}} luvyakat |

Subject: RE: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: rich-joy Date: 31 Mar 03 - 04:48 AM My Grandpa had a dachshund ... Now just by coincidence, this joke arrived in my emails yesterday, which I kinda like!! Cheers! R-J A Wealthy man decided to go on a safari in Africa and takes his faithful pet dachshund along for company. One day, the dachshund starts chasing butterflies and before long the dachshund discovers that he is lost. So, wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the obvious intention of having lunch. The dachshund thinks, "OK, I'm in deep trouble now!" Then he noticed some bones on the ground close by, and immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap, the dachshund exclaims loudly, "Boy, that was one delicious leopard. I wonder if there are any more around here?" Hearing this, the leopard halts his attack in mid-stride, as a look of terror comes over him, and slinks away into the trees. "Whew," says the leopard. "That was close. That dachshund nearly had me." Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So, off he goes. But the dachshund saw him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figured that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard. The leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here monkey, hopon my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine." Now the dachshund sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back, and thinks, "What am I going to do now?" But instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet... and just when they get close enough to hear, the dachshund says, "Where's that monkey? I sent him off half an hour ago to bring me another leopard." SOMETIMES IF YOU CAN'T DAZZLE THEM WITH BRILLIANCE, THEN BAFFLE THEM WITH BULLSHIT!! |

Subject: RE: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: Little Hawk Date: 31 Mar 03 - 11:35 AM LOL! They are clever little rascals, and survival is always on their minds. There's a Far Side cartoon of a typical dachshund in a house late at night. He's standing in the darkened living room, observing as a huge, hideous, tentacled, one-eyed, fanged monster enters the house through a half-open window. He thinks to himself, "Whoa!...Maybe I'll just pass on my usual barking frenzy." Great cartoon! Our guys, Arnot & Valdy, had this technique mastered. When they were in the house alone and someone (possibly a stranger) arrived outside, they would not make a peep till they knew for sure who it was (could be someone dangerous, right?). But...if they had human backup in the house with them, they would raise the roof when anyone showed up, and act very, very brave, of course. :-) If you're vacationing in Florida and have a dachshund, watch out for the alligators! Nothing they like better than a plump, juicy dachshund for a snack, and them gators can move fast. - LH |

Subject: RE: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: Little Hawk Date: 01 Apr 03 - 09:51 AM That is so true, Dave! And they're horny little rascals too...the males, that is...until they get very old, at least. I am beginning to adjust to Arnot's passing, and the humour helps, but he is still sorely missed around here. - LH |

Subject: RE: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: kendall Date: 25 Jul 03 - 04:08 PM I found that piece titled Rainbow Bridge. Hope it gives you some comfort. If I can figure it out, I'll post it. It's in my documents |

Subject: RE: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: kendall Date: 25 Jul 03 - 04:11 PM RAINBOW BRIDGE There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth. It is called Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills, and valleys with lush green grass. Whe a beloved pet dies, it goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and the frail are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other. There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes When one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches, the ears are up! The eyes are staring, and one suddenly runs from the group You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, You take him/her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and you look once more Into the eyes of your trusting pet. Then, you cross the Rainbow Bridge together Never again to be separated. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: Little Hawk Date: 25 Jul 03 - 04:57 PM Very comforting, Kendall. Thanks for that. The new miniature dachshund, Rennie, is doing his best to fill the gap left by Arnot. He's a bit weird, but likeable...which is pretty standard for dachshunds. He is lower to the ground than anything else I've seen, other than a snake. Pet psychologists could have a field day with these little guys. The comic strip Liberty Meadows is running an extensive gag right now on its official wiener dog, Oscar, who is training for an upcoming wiener dog race. He is the typical brown dachshund in every way. - LH |

Subject: RE: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: CarolC Date: 26 Jul 03 - 08:56 AM Hey, LH, if you want to see something really funny and interesting, get a pet ferrett and watch it and the miniature dachshund play together. Back when I was doing wildlife rehabilitation work, the occasional ferrett would come my way and for a while when I had one, our neighbors had a miniature dachshund puppy. Man, that was fun to watch. Even better is a miniature dachshund puppy and a baby raccoon playing together. I think I like miniature dachshunds better than the regular size ones. |

It's always amusing to see a whole bunch of the little rascals together, although it can be pretty noisy too. I saw thousands and thousands of dogs in Trinidad, but never saw one single dachshund down there. - LH |

Subject: RE: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: katlaughing Date: 27 Jul 03 - 01:36 AM Oh, gawd, LH, I heard a story on NPR a few weeks ago about a nasty rural breeder of chihuahuas in Calif. They'd let them go feral and there were over 350 chihuahuas in roving packs killing one another. It was awful. They'd finally caught them all, though by the time they did the numbers were down to about 280. Just born pups were adopted out as they were still able to be raised tame, but they weren't sure what to do with the rest of them; they were all wild and mean. It was hard for the reporters not to kid around a little, though. One of the experts said it was partly because the word "chihuahua" itself conjures up the giggles, plus everyone loves the Taco Bell one, AND, as he pointed out, no one's ever encountered roving bands of killer chihuahuas before, not even on the Great Plains. Still, there was real concern in the comunity and on NPR. They were trying to figure a way to keep them all and rehab them or something. Kendall, I'll see ya on that and raise ya an Ark of critters!:-) |

Subject: RE: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: Amergin Date: 27 Jul 03 - 02:10 AM Kat, that always pisses me off that people do that to animals...I think they (the owners and breeders) should be shot.... |

Subject: RE: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: Kim C Date: 27 Jul 03 - 09:56 AM I hate to hear that. It sucks to lose an animal friend. They really do beoome family members and non-animal people never seem to get that. I still miss my fuzzy dog-bear Zenith who died last November. But..... some of you know about Sampson the Giant Puppy, who found us back in April. He is now five months old and about 40 or so pounds, with huge feet and gawky legs. The poor thing has absolutely no finesse at all. But he's learning. :-) |

Subject: RE: Obit: Arnot the dachshund (my mother's dog) From: Little Hawk Date: 28 Jul 03 - 04:19 PM Yes, and alligators! He is, like most small dachshunds, quite paranoid about the possibility of an unwarranted attack upon his little sausage-like body by some dastardly predator, but no dachshund expects an attack to come out of the water! For this they need human assistance or just plain good luck in order to remain uneaten when perambulating along the shoreline. The older dog, Valdy, is always looking around nervously at the sky as though he expects to be siezed at any moment by an eagle. It would have to be a strong eagle, because he is very heavy. An eagle of intermediate size would be likely to suffer a hernia trying to make off with Valdy. - LH |
